To change an Unturned server’s difficulty, stop the server cleanly, change its difficulty selector to Easy, Normal, or Hard, edit the configuration file that belongs to that difficulty, then restart the server. Use Save followed by Shutdown in the server console whenever possible; most settings cannot be changed safely while the server is running.
The file you edit depends on the server’s age. Current installations normally use Config.txt. Servers created before version 3.25.8.0 may still have a legacy Config.json, which stores separate Easy, Normal, and Hard sections and may be converted into difficulty-specific text files during startup.

What actually changes when you switch difficulty
Unturned exposes three documented server presets: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Normal is the default. The selected preset determines which gameplay configuration the server loads; it is not enough to edit a file for a different preset and leave the active selector unchanged.
Difficulty is a server-side setting. Players do not change it from their client, and changing a value in a configuration file while the process is still running usually has no effect because most server options are read during startup. A restart is therefore part of the change, not an optional final step.

Identify your server’s configuration format first
Look in the server-specific folder before changing anything. A simple installation normally starts at U3DS/Servers/Default/; replace Default with your own server ID if you created a different instance.

Smartly Dressed Games’ current setup documentation identifies Config.txt as the normal location for server options, for example Servers/Default/Config.txt. Older tutorials often describe only the JSON layout, so do not assume a tutorial’s file names match a new installation.

- Record the server ID and the full path to its folder.
- Make a backup copy of
Commands.datand every configuration file you are about to touch. Give the copy a date and keep it outside the live server folder. - Confirm that you can restart the process or use the hosting panel’s restart control.
- Tell players about the maintenance window. The server has no built-in autosave feature, so do not terminate the process abruptly while people are playing.
- If you use a control panel, check whether it regenerates configuration files when the server starts. A panel template can overwrite manual edits.
Step-by-step: change difficulty manually
- Save and stop the server. From the server console, run
Save, wait for it to complete, and then runShutdown. The documentedShutdowncommand safely saves and closes the server. If you manage the process through a panel, use its graceful stop option after saving rather than killing the process. - Open the correct server folder. Browse to
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/. For the basic setup this isU3DS/Servers/Default/. Do not edit a similarly named test, backup, or second server directory. - Determine which format is active. If the folder contains
Config.txt, start with that file. If it contains onlyConfig.json, treat it as a legacy installation. When both old and new files exist, use the startup log and file names to determine which one the server loads; changing an unused file will not change gameplay. - Set the difficulty selector. Open
Commands.datand locate the existingDifficultyentry, if present. Set its value toEasy,Normal, orHardusing the exact syntax documented for your server build. Preserve the file’s separators, capitalization, and one-command-per-line format. Older wiki-based setups commonly put the selector in this file, while current documentation should take precedence for newer builds. - Edit the matching gameplay configuration. In the current layout, change the active
Config.txtor the generated difficulty-specific text file associated with the selector. In a legacyConfig.json, change the section with the same difficulty name. Do not change only the Easy or Hard section while the server is still set to Normal. - Validate the file before saving. Keep the existing key names and value types. In legacy JSON, every property except the last one in an object needs a comma, and an extra comma can also prevent loading. In text configuration, avoid deleting delimiters or adding comments in places the parser does not support.
- Save both files and start the server. Close your editor so the files are fully written, then launch the server normally. If the server is managed by a panel, use its start or restart action rather than starting a second copy manually.
- Verify the startup output. Check which difficulty and configuration file the process reports. If you need to see gameplay-configuration overrides, launch with
-LogGameplayConfigand inspect the resulting output. This confirms what the server read instead of relying on the timestamp of a file you edited.
How the selector and configuration file work together
Think of the change as two linked values: a selector chooses the preset, and a configuration file supplies that preset’s gameplay values. Both must point to the same difficulty.

If your build does not show a clear selector line, do not invent a new command format. Check the documentation for that build and then confirm the result in the startup log. The command syntax has changed across tutorials and configuration formats, while the three preset names have remained the documented choices.

Current installations: working with Config.txt
On current servers, most options are in Config.txt. Open it with a plain-text editor, locate the gameplay entries you intend to change, and save the file without changing its encoding or line structure.
Some installations also contain files named for a difficulty, such as Config_NormalDifficulty.txt. These files are commonly produced when an older JSON configuration is converted during startup, but a server may retain them after an upgrade. Use the file that the startup output identifies as active. If the log and the directory appear inconsistent, stop the server, make backups, and compare modification times before editing again.
A value explicitly assigned in the active configuration takes priority over a blank value that a level can supply. This matters when a setting appears unchanged after a difficulty switch: the selected level may be overriding an empty entry. The global launch option -NoLevelConfigOverrides disables level overrides, but apply it only when you understand the effect on every level and server setting.
Legacy installations: working with Config.json
Servers created before version 3.25.8.0 may keep all three presets in one Config.json. The file has separate Easy, Normal, and Hard sections. Editing a non-active section is a valid file edit, but it cannot affect a server that is currently using another preset.

During startup, the server can convert that legacy file into a per-difficulty text file. An example name is Config_NormalDifficulty.txt. After conversion, treat the generated text file as the active source identified by the startup output. Repeatedly editing the old JSON while the server loads the converted text file will appear to do nothing.
JSON is less forgiving than the text format. A missing comma, a mismatched brace, a quoted value where a number is expected, or an accidental smart quote can stop the configuration from loading. If the server fails to start after an edit, restore the backup first, confirm that the process launches, and then reapply one change at a time.

Changing difficulty through a managed hosting panel
A managed Unturned host usually exposes the same operation through a file manager, configuration editor, or startup-parameter form. The labels vary, so map each panel control to the underlying files rather than assuming a button changes every setting automatically.
- Stop the server with the panel’s graceful stop control.
- Open the file manager or configuration editor for the correct server instance.
- Find the difficulty selector or the panel field that writes it to
Commands.dat. - Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard, then open the matching gameplay configuration section or file.
- Save the panel form, restart the server, and read the console output to confirm the loaded file.
- Create a panel backup or snapshot before testing additional gameplay changes.

Before paying for a managed service, verify its current geography, backup policy, restart behavior, file access, and support terms. The existence of a panel workflow does not establish any provider’s current pricing or affiliate conditions.

Troubleshooting: why the new difficulty did not apply
The server is still using the old gameplay
Check that the process was stopped before editing and that it was restarted afterward. Then inspect the startup output for the selected difficulty and loaded configuration file. A file timestamp alone cannot prove that the server read that file.

You changed the wrong JSON section
In legacy Config.json, all three sections are stored together. Match the edited section to the selector in Commands.dat. If the server converted the JSON, edit the generated text file named in the startup output instead.
A current server has no Config.json
That is expected on a current installation. Use Config.txt and follow the current documentation for your build. Tutorials written before the 3.25.8.0 format boundary may show files that your server no longer creates.
The difficulty line is ignored
Confirm that the entry is in the Commands.dat belonging to the server ID you actually launch. Remove duplicate or contradictory entries, preserve the syntax expected by your build, and verify capitalization. If the command is not recognized, consult the documentation for that exact server version instead of copying a line from an older wiki.

A setting changes back after every restart
A hosting panel may regenerate the file from a template, or a startup script may copy a default configuration over your edit. Compare the file immediately before launch and immediately after launch. If it changes, update the panel template or startup script, then restart once more.

Level configuration can supply values when the server configuration leaves them empty. Assign the desired value explicitly in the active configuration. Use -NoLevelConfigOverrides only if you want to disable level-provided overrides globally and have checked the consequences for all maps.
The server will not start after editing JSON
Restore the last working backup, then inspect commas, braces, quotation marks, and value types in the original file. The official documentation specifically warns that missing commas can break legacy JSON loading. Reapply the difficulty change after the server starts cleanly.
You cannot find the active server folder
Search the launch configuration or panel for the server ID, then inspect U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/. Multiple server instances can each have their own Commands.dat and configuration files. Editing the Default folder will not affect an instance launched with another ID.
Verify the result before inviting players back
- The server starts without configuration or JSON parse errors.
- The startup output identifies the intended Easy, Normal, or Hard preset.
- The loaded file is the one you edited, not an inactive legacy section or stale generated file.
- Any gameplay value you changed appears in the output when
-LogGameplayConfigis enabled. - The server remains on the intended settings after a second graceful restart.
- Your backup is still available for rollback.
If a test change produces an unexpected result, stop the server, restore the matching backup of Commands.dat and the active configuration, and restart. Once the original state is confirmed, make a single controlled change and verify it in the log before changing anything else.
Changing back later
Reversing the change uses the same sequence: save and shut down, set the selector to the desired preset, edit the corresponding section or text file, save, restart, and verify the startup output. Do not restore only the gameplay file while leaving the selector on a different difficulty; that recreates the mismatch that caused the original problem.
