To change difficulty for a RimWorld Together server, either edit the server’s difficulty JSON while the server is stopped, or use the server console command toggledifficulty. The file-based method lets you set individual values such as ThreatScale; the console method temporarily turns custom difficulty off so you can adjust Storyteller settings in game and send them back to the server.
File names differ between RimWorld Together builds. The official wiki identifies DifficultyValues.json in the server’s Core folder, while several hosting-panel guides show DifficultyConfig.json. Use the file that actually exists in your installation, back it up, and confirm that the server and every client run compatible versions.
What you need before changing difficulty
Difficulty is not always a single server-wide switch. A RimWorld Together server can allow each player to choose Storyteller settings locally, or it can enforce a custom configuration and push those settings to connected clients. Decide which behavior you want before editing anything.
- Administrative access: You need access to the server console or the host’s file manager/FTP service.
- A stopped server: Stop the server cleanly before opening or saving the JSON file. Editing a live file can be overwritten at shutdown or leave a partially written configuration.
- A backup: Download a copy of the original file and note the current server version. Keep the backup outside the server directory.
- Matching versions: The server build, RimWorld Together version, and clients should be compatible. Difficulty synchronization problems are often caused by a version mismatch rather than a bad value.
- Valid JSON: Preserve quotation marks, commas, braces, and the existing key names. A single syntax error can prevent the server from reading the file.

Method 1: edit the server difficulty file
1. Stop the server
Use the host panel’s Stop control or shut the dedicated process down normally. Wait until the panel reports that the process has exited before downloading or editing configuration files.

2. Locate the Core folder
The official RimWorld Together documentation places the settings in the server’s Core subfolder. An FTP-style path is shown as ../rimworld-together/Core. In a hosting panel, open the server’s Files tab and look for a similarly named directory.
Do not assume that every installation uses the same filename. The official wiki identifies DifficultyValues.json; other current hosting instructions identify DifficultyConfig.json. Search the server files for either name and open the file that is present in your build. Do not create a second file with the other name unless the documentation for your exact version explicitly requires it.
3. Make a backup
Download the JSON file before changing it. Give the copy a descriptive name such as DifficultyValues-before-change.json and keep it off the server. If the next restart fails or the values are ignored, restoring this copy gives you a known-good starting point.
4. Set custom difficulty on or off
The key documented by the official wiki is UseCustomDifficulty. Set it to a JSON Boolean, not a quoted word:
trueenables the custom values stored in the file.falsedisables custom values so the game uses its default difficulty behavior.
A minimal example of the relevant shape is:
{"UseCustomDifficulty": true, "ThreatScale": 1.0}This is only an illustration. Keep every other key already present in your file and follow the capitalization used by your build. Replacing the whole document with a two-line example can discard required settings.
5. Adjust the values you actually need
ThreatScale controls the intensity of threats. Change it only after checking the numeric convention used by your file. Other parameters may control resource production, disease, mood, raids, or storyteller behavior, but the exact key list is version-sensitive. If a key is absent, do not invent a name from a different guide; copy the spelling and data type used in your own file or the documentation for your build.

Every parameter should have an explicit value. One hosting guide warns that unassigned parameters can fall back to 0 percent, which can make a colony appear broken rather than merely easier or harder. Review the entire object for blank values, accidental deletions, and numbers outside the range expected by the game.
6. Save valid JSON
Preserve the outer braces and place commas between properties, but not after the final property. Do not add comments inside the file. If your editor has a JSON validator, run it before uploading. A valid-looking value with the wrong type, such as "true" instead of true, can still be ignored.
7. Upload, restart, and verify
- Upload the edited file to the same directory and overwrite the original only after confirming the backup exists.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join with a client that matches the server version.
- Check the server log or console for configuration errors.
- Confirm the selected storyteller and a changed value in a controlled test, such as creating a disposable save before changing a long-running colony.
If the server starts but behaves exactly as before, check whether custom difficulty is enabled and whether enforcement is overriding the file, then follow the troubleshooting section below.
Method 2: use toggledifficulty and the Storyteller menu
The server console command is written in lowercase:
toggledifficultyAccording to the RimWorld Together workflow, this command turns custom difficulty off. That allows you to edit the settings through the game’s Storyteller interface instead of hand-editing JSON.
1. Open the server console
Use the console exposed by your host panel or the dedicated-server window. Make sure you are connected to the intended server; running the command on a test instance will not change the production server.

2. Run the command once
Enter toggledifficulty and submit it. Treat the command as a toggle: confirm the resulting state in the console or server status rather than assuming that a second invocation has the same effect. The purpose of the first invocation is to disable enforced custom difficulty while you make the changes.
3. Open Storyteller Settings in the client
- Launch RimWorld and connect to the server.
- Open Options.
- Select Gameplay.
- Open Storyteller Settings.
- Choose Modify.
- Select a preset or configure a custom setup.
The exact controls available depend on the game and mod versions. Change only the settings you intend to share; do not assume a local menu change has reached the server yet.

4. Send the finished settings
Use the Send Difficulty control identified in the server workflow. This transmits the menu configuration to the server rather than leaving it as a client-only preference.
5. Re-enable custom difficulty
Run toggledifficulty again when the settings are ready, or use the server’s documented control for re-enabling custom difficulty. Because the command toggles state, verify that the final state is enabled before disconnecting. Restarting the server after the change is a sensible way to ensure the configuration is loaded consistently for everyone.
When players can change difficulty themselves
Some installations manage difficulty per player instead of enforcing one server configuration. In that arrangement, a player can open Options → Gameplay → Storyteller Settings → Modify and select a preset or custom setup without changing another player’s colony.

Ask the administrator whether enforcement is enabled before troubleshooting a player’s menu.

Understanding enforcement and the “changes do not bind” problem
A known RimWorld Together issue, tracked as GitHub issue #248, describes difficulty configuration changes that did not bind. In the reported pattern, the server enforced custom difficulty, edits appeared to be ignored, and clients were pushed back to default storyteller settings.
Use these checks when a saved file has no visible effect:
- Confirm the active file: Make sure you edited the file in the running server’s directory, not a local client copy or an unused backup folder.
- Check the filename: Look for both
DifficultyValues.jsonandDifficultyConfig.json, but change only the file your build actually reads. - Check
UseCustomDifficulty: A value offalsedeliberately disables the custom object. - Check enforcement: An enforced configuration can overwrite local Storyteller selections. If your build has an enforcement key, use its exact spelling from the file.
- Check versions: Verify that the server and clients use compatible RimWorld Together and game versions.
- Restart after editing: Many hosts load configuration only at startup.
One third-party guide labels an enforcement setting EnforeDifficulty. That spelling appears to be a typo, so do not add it blindly. Use the exact key present in your own configuration or in documentation for your installed version.

The difficulty file is missing
Search the entire server directory for both documented filenames. Check the Core folder rather than the game’s local user-data directory. If neither file exists, start the server once, stop it cleanly, and inspect the generated configuration directories. Do not download a similarly named file from another version and assume it is compatible.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup immediately, then start the server to confirm that the problem is in the edit. Compare the changed file for missing commas, unmatched braces, smart quotation marks, duplicate keys, or values written as text instead of numbers and Booleans. Reapply one change at a time with a JSON-aware editor.
The server starts but reverts to defaults
Check that UseCustomDifficulty is set to true when you expect custom values. Then inspect the console for a parse warning and verify that every parameter has a value. A missing value can be interpreted as 0 percent according to hosting guidance, while a disabled custom mode intentionally falls back to default behavior.

Players are forced back to their old settings
This usually indicates enforcement or a synchronization mismatch. Confirm the server’s enforcement state, run the documented disable-edit-send-enable workflow, and make sure all clients match the server build. Have every player reconnect after the final restart.

Confirm that the command was entered in the server console, not the in-game chat box or a client log window. Enter it once, inspect the reported state, make the Storyteller change, use Send Difficulty, and verify the state again. If the console does not recognize the command, consult the command list shipped with your exact RimWorld Together version; command availability can change between builds.
Only one player sees the new difficulty
The change may still be local. Use Send Difficulty in the Storyteller menu or apply the file-based method with custom difficulty enabled, then restart and reconnect. A server that intentionally permits per-player settings will not make one player’s selection universal.
Safe operating practices for future changes
- Record the server version, mod list, filename, and date beside each backup.
- Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify which edit caused a problem.
- Keep a known-good configuration ready for quick rollback.
- Test major changes on a disposable save before applying them to a long-running colony.
- After every restart, verify the active storyteller, custom-mode state, and at least one changed parameter.
- Tell players whether difficulty is server-enforced or individually selectable; otherwise they may repeatedly change a menu that the server will overwrite.
Which method should you use?
Use the JSON method when you need a repeatable configuration, want to audit exact values, or operate a server that is restarted regularly. Use the console and Storyteller menu when you want the game’s own interface to assemble the settings and your build supports the full disable, edit, send, and re-enable workflow. If you are unsure which file a host panel uses, identify the file in your installation first rather than copying a path from a different guide.
The reliable sequence is: stop before file edits, back up, use the correct version-specific filename, set UseCustomDifficulty deliberately, give every parameter a value, restart, and verify synchronization with a matching client. That sequence prevents the most common causes of a RimWorld Together difficulty change being ignored.
