Use Conan Exiles’ in-game admin menu to change a server’s difficulty. Join as an administrator, open Esc → Settings → Server Settings, choose Civilized, Decadent, or Barbaric, and confirm. The most important side effect is that changing the preset resets the server’s admin password. Afterward, restore the AdminPassword entry in ServerSettings.ini, log in again, and grant yourself administrator access.
The menu location depends on your client build: Enhanced places the option in the Server tab, while Legacy places it in the General menu. The in-game menu is the dependable method because the exact INI key and accepted values for the difficulty preset are not consistently documented.

What the three Conan Exiles difficulty presets mean
Conan Exiles provides three named server presets. They are broad starting profiles rather than three independent sliders.

The preset changes baseline values in selected server-setting categories. It does not act as a universal reset for every setting in the control panel.

What changing difficulty affects
The official Conan Exiles Wiki describes the Difficulty setting as adjusting base values in several categories, typically the Combat, Survival, Harvesting, and Purge tabs. The Progression, Crafting, and Day/Night categories are left alone by the difficulty preset.

“Typically” matters here: the preset establishes base settings for the affected categories, while individual settings or other server configuration choices may still determine the final behavior. Do not assume that changing difficulty modifies every value visible in the server settings screen.

Make sure you can authenticate as an administrator
You need the server’s current admin password before opening the administrative server-settings controls. If you do not know it, recover or set it in the server configuration first; selecting a difficulty preset will reset that password.
Tell players what will change
A difficulty change affects the server profile for everyone who plays there. Explain whether you are moving toward the easier Civilized profile, the normal Decadent profile, or the harder Barbaric profile so players understand why combat, survival, harvesting, or Purge behavior may differ.

Back up the configuration before touching files
If you need to restore the admin password through the configuration file, keep a copy of the original file before editing it. A backup gives you a recovery point if a panel or file editor saves an unexpected change.
Know which client build you are using
The same control is exposed in different menu locations. Enhanced uses the Server tab; Legacy uses the General menu. If you follow the wrong path, the option may appear to be missing even though your account and server are configured correctly.
Change the difficulty through the in-game admin menu
This is the supported, least ambiguous procedure.
- Join the server. Connect to the Conan Exiles server whose difficulty you want to change.
- Authenticate with the admin password. Use the current server admin password so the administrative controls are available.
- Open the pause menu. Press Esc.
- Open Settings. Select Settings from the pause-menu options.
- Open Server Settings. Choose Server Settings.
- Find the difficulty control. On Enhanced, look in the Server tab. On Legacy, look in the General menu.
- Select a preset. Choose Civilized, Decadent, or Barbaric.
- Confirm the change. Accept the prompt or confirmation control shown by your build.
- Restore administrator access. Treat the admin password as reset immediately after the change. Follow the password-recovery procedure below before you need another administrative action.
Use the preset selector rather than trying to infer an undocumented numeric or text value in an INI file. The menu presents the supported choices and applies the associated base settings for you.
The admin-password reset is part of the procedure
Changing the difficulty resets the admin password. This is the most common reason an otherwise successful difficulty change appears to have caused a problem: the server profile changes, but the old password no longer grants administrative access.

Restore the password in ServerSettings.ini
- Stop the server before a manual file edit. This is a precaution to prevent the running server from rewriting the configuration while you are changing it.
- Locate the file. The official Conan Exiles Wiki identifies the file as
ServerSettings.iniin theSaved/Config/WindowsServerfolder of the dedicated-server installation. - Back up the file. Copy the original
ServerSettings.inibefore editing. - Set the admin-password entry. Edit the line named
AdminPasswordand assign the password you intend to use. Preserve the existing INI formatting and do not alter unrelated entries. - Save the file. Close the editor only after confirming that the file was saved in the same
Saved/Config/WindowsServerlocation. - Start the server again. Allow the server to load the edited configuration.
- Join and authenticate. Connect with the password you just set.
- Grant yourself administrator access again. Logging in with the password and being marked as an administrator are separate steps; perform the server’s normal admin-login action after reconnecting.
The password restoration is separate from choosing Civilized, Decadent, or Barbaric. Do not expect re-editing the password to select the difficulty, and do not assume that the difficulty preset will remain available as a safely guessed INI value.
Why direct difficulty editing is not the safe default
Documentation does not consistently establish the exact INI key name or accepted values for the difficulty preset. Sources also differ on whether the preset is stored directly in ServerSettings.ini in the same way on every server setup. A hosted control panel may apply the setting through its own workflow, while a self-hosted dedicated server can have a different configuration process.

Use the in-game selector first. If you are investigating a running server’s file, make a backup and compare the file before and after a controlled menu change rather than guessing at syntax.
Safe handling if you must inspect the file
- Stop the server before making a manual edit.
- Keep an untouched backup of
ServerSettings.ini. - Change only the documented
AdminPasswordline when your goal is password recovery. - Do not delete unrelated settings to “reset” the difficulty.
- Start the server and verify administrator login before making additional changes.
Stopping the server first is a precaution because a server may rewrite its configuration during shutdown or startup. An edit made while the process is writing the file can be lost or partially superseded.

Enhanced and Legacy menu paths
Enhanced build
After you open Esc → Settings → Server Settings, check the Server tab for the difficulty preset. The label may not appear in the same place as instructions written for the older client.
Legacy build
After opening the same settings area, check the General menu. On Legacy, the difficulty selector is documented there rather than under the Enhanced Server tab.
If neither location shows the selector
- Confirm that you joined the intended server rather than changing local or single-player settings.
- Confirm that you authenticated with the current admin password.
- Check whether your client is Enhanced or Legacy and use that build’s menu location.
- Leave and reconnect after restoring the password if the password reset removed your administrative privileges.
- Use the menu’s exact labels; do not substitute an unrelated combat, harvesting, or Purge slider for the difficulty preset.
Verification checklist after the change
Use this checklist to separate a successful difficulty change from an authentication problem:
- The selected preset is visible as Civilized, Decadent, or Barbaric in the server-settings interface.
- You can reconnect using the restored admin password.
- You can grant yourself administrator access again.
- Players understand that Combat, Survival, Harvesting, and Purge baselines may have changed.
- You did not expect Progression, Crafting, or Day/Night settings to change automatically.
- Your backup of
ServerSettings.iniis stored separately from the live configuration.
Troubleshooting common failures

Choosing the right preset for a shared server
Choose Civilized for a forgiving environment
Civilized is the easy preset. It is a sensible starting point when a new community is learning the game, when players have limited time, or when the server’s priority is reducing pressure in the categories controlled by the preset.

Choose Decadent for the normal profile
Decadent is the normal preset. It is the neutral choice when you want the standard difficulty profile rather than deliberately easing or intensifying the server.
Choose Barbaric for a harder challenge
Barbaric is the hard preset. Select it when the community explicitly wants more demanding baseline behavior in the affected combat, survival, harvesting, and Purge categories.

Because the preset can change several categories at once, record the previous choice before switching. That makes it easier to reverse the decision through the same menu if the community prefers the earlier profile.
Changing difficulty without losing control of the server
- Record the current preset and any custom settings you care about.
- Confirm that you know the current admin password.
- Change the preset through the appropriate Enhanced or Legacy menu.
- Immediately restore the password in
ServerSettings.ini. - Reconnect and re-admin yourself.
- Check the four categories the preset can affect: Combat, Survival, Harvesting, and Purge.
- Leave Progression, Crafting, and Day/Night settings alone unless you intentionally want to change them separately.
- Tell players which preset is now active and explain that the admin password had to be reset.
This sequence keeps the supported menu action as the source of truth while treating the configuration file only as the recovery mechanism for administrator access.
