Change the DayDurationInSeconds value inside the GameTimeModifiers section of the settings file your server actually loads. Stop the server before editing, save a valid JSON file, then restart it. The file name and location differ between hosts, so verify the path in your hosting panel or server documentation rather than assuming one universal location.
What the day-length setting changes
DayDurationInSeconds controls the real-world time required for one complete V Rising day-and-night cycle. The number is measured in seconds. For example, a value of 1,440 represents 24 minutes of real time because 1,440 seconds ÷ 60 equals 24 minutes.

Treat the duration and the clock boundaries as two different controls.
Most published instructions for this edit come from hosting providers and community discussions rather than an official Stunlock Studios configuration reference. The current default and exact file path therefore need to be treated as host- and version-dependent. Make the first change on a private test server if possible.

Before you edit the server
Stop the server completely
Use your host’s Stop or Shut Down control and wait until the status shows that the process has exited. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when the process saves its settings or shuts down.
Make a backup
Download or copy the original settings file before changing it. Give the copy a recognizable name such as ServerGameSettings-before-day-length.json. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if the server will not start or another setting is unintentionally changed.

V Rising hosting setups do not expose a single universally confirmed path. A control panel may provide a JSON editor, a file manager, or a generated game-settings form. If the panel writes a file automatically, edit the file it identifies rather than creating a second file in a nearby directory.
Where to find the setting
Hosting guides identify several possible locations. They conflict, so use the following as search targets, not as a guarantee that every installation uses one of them.

If you can access a startup command, look for an argument or preset name that identifies the settings file. Otherwise, ask the host which file is read at launch. Having two files with similar content does not help if the server reads only one of them.

How to change DayDurationInSeconds
- Stop the server. Confirm that it is offline before opening the file.
- Open the active settings file. Use the path supplied by your host, or check the locations listed above. Download a copy if the panel does not provide version history.
- Find
GameTimeModifiers. Use the editor’s search function. The property is normally an object containing several time-related settings. - Locate
DayDurationInSeconds. Change only the number after the colon. Keep the property name, quotation marks, braces, commas, and capitalization intact. - Enter the desired number of seconds. Use a whole number within the range documented by your host. Convert minutes to seconds by multiplying minutes by 60.
- Save the file as JSON. Do not let a text editor append an extra extension such as
.txt. If your host has a Save or Apply button, use it and wait for the confirmation. - Restart the server. Start it only after the file has been saved. Allow the process to finish loading before connecting.
- Observe one cycle on a test server. Compare the elapsed real time with your calculation before applying the setting to a live community.
Example of the nested setting
Your file may contain additional properties, so do not replace the whole object with this example. The important relationship is that DayDurationInSeconds is inside GameTimeModifiers.

}If GameTimeModifiers already contains other entries, retain them. A typical edit changes only the existing duration value, for example from 1080 to 1800. Keep a comma between properties when another entry follows the duration, but do not leave a trailing comma before a closing brace if your editor or parser rejects trailing commas.
Choosing a duration
Use the real-time length that matches how often your group plays. A shorter cycle produces more frequent transitions; a longer cycle leaves each lighting period in place for longer. The setting does not make the in-game clock run on a different scale independently of the cycle; it changes the total cycle duration.

The range in the table is not an official Stunlock specification. If your host documents a narrower range or rejects a value, follow the host’s validation rules. A value outside the accepted range can be ignored, clamped, or prevent the server from loading, depending on the configuration system.
Day duration versus day and night clock hours
Changing DayDurationInSeconds does not set the clock time at which the sun rises or sets. The start and end boundaries are controlled separately:

DayStartHourandDayStartMinuteidentify when daytime begins.DayEndHourandDayEndMinuteidentify when daytime ends.
For example, changing the duration to 1,800 seconds makes the entire cycle 30 real-time minutes; it does not, by itself, make daytime begin at 08:00 or end at 20:00. Edit the hour and minute values only when you want different in-game boundaries, and keep those changes separate from your duration test so you can identify which setting caused an observed result.
Can you disable daytime?
A Steam Community post describes an anecdotal setup with DayDurationInSeconds set to 3600 and both DayStartHour and DayEndHour set to 0, reportedly producing permanent night. This is a user report, not an official guarantee, and it may behave differently across versions or server configurations. Do not apply it directly to a live world without testing a backup or private instance.
There is no established official instruction in the available documentation confirming a supported “permanent night” mode. If the zero-to-zero arrangement does not work on your server, restore the backup and use ordinary start and end values instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Using a hosting control panel
Some hosts expose server settings through a form rather than requiring direct file editing, but whether a particular panel includes DayDurationInSeconds has not been established. If your panel has a Game Settings, Advanced Settings, or JSON editor area, search for “day duration” and the exact key name.

- Open the settings or configuration editor that the panel says it will load at startup.
- Search for
DayDurationInSecondsor expand theGameTimeModifierssection. - Enter the number of seconds and save or apply the change.
- Restart the server and check the console or status page for a configuration error.
If a form shows a friendly label but not the underlying key, inspect the generated JSON after saving, if the host permits it. This confirms that the panel changed the file the server uses instead of a separate template or preset that is not active.

How to verify that the change worked
Check the saved file
Reopen the file after saving and confirm that the value is still present under GameTimeModifiers. If it reverted immediately, the panel may be regenerating the file from another preset, or the edit may have been made in a read-only copy.
Check startup output
After restarting, read the server console or log for JSON parsing errors, unknown-setting warnings, or a message that identifies the loaded preset. A clean startup does not prove the value was applied, but a parsing error means the file must be corrected before players connect.
Measure a transition
Record the real-world time when one cycle begins and when the next equivalent transition occurs. Use a stopwatch or clock and compare the result with the configured seconds. A single observation can be affected by startup timing, so use a private test world when precision matters.
Confirm the clock boundaries separately
If the cycle length appears correct but daylight starts or ends at an unexpected hour, inspect the four start/end hour and minute properties. Do not change the duration again to solve a clock-boundary problem.

The server will not start after saving
- Restore the backup file to determine whether the edit introduced the problem.
- Check for a missing comma, an extra comma, mismatched braces, or quotation marks around a numeric value.
- Make sure the value is a number such as
1440, not a word or an unquoted expression. - Confirm that the file still has a
.jsonextension and was not saved as a text document. - Start with a known-good file, then change only one property.
The server starts, but the duration is unchanged
- Verify that the edited file is the one loaded by the server, not a similarly named template or unused preset.
- Search for duplicate
DayDurationInSecondsentries. The server may be reading a different object or the last value may be overwritten by a generated configuration. - Stop the server again, save the file through the host’s own editor, and restart rather than using a live reload assumption.
- Check whether the host panel has a separate Apply, Save, or Regenerate action that must run after editing.
The host rejects the number
Use a whole number and stay within the range your host accepts. One ServerBlend guide lists 60 through 86,400 seconds, but that range is not confirmed as a universal rule. If the panel reports a narrower limit, use that limit or ask the host for the supported range for your server version.

Daylight timing is wrong after changing duration
Inspect DayStartHour, DayStartMinute, DayEndHour, and DayEndMinute. Those properties define the 24-hour clock boundaries; changing DayDurationInSeconds alone should not be used to correct them.
The setting keeps reverting
A host may rebuild a generated file from a preset whenever the server starts or when you change a panel option. Identify the active preset, edit the source that generates it, or use the panel field intended for persistent overrides. Keep the original and modified copies so you can compare them after each restart.
Recommended test procedure
Because the available guidance is not an official, version-specific Stunlock reference, isolate the change before rolling it out to an established community.
- Create or select a private test server using the same game build and host configuration as the live server.
- Stop it and back up its active settings file.
- Set only
GameTimeModifiers.DayDurationInSecondsto your proposed value. - Restart and watch for startup errors.
- Measure at least one complete cycle and note the observed real-time duration.
- If you also need different daylight hours, change the four start/end fields in a separate test restart.
- Copy the validated change to the live server during a maintenance window and retain the previous file for rollback.
This procedure distinguishes a bad JSON edit, an inactive file, and an unsuitable value. It also prevents an experimental permanent-night configuration from altering a world that players already rely on.
