On Windows, change a running server temporarily in Task Manager, or launch it persistently with start /HIGH (or the gentler /ABOVENORMAL). On Linux, use sudo renice -5 -p PID for an existing process or prefix the launch command with nice -n -5. These settings are scheduling hints, not guaranteed performance fixes.
What changing CPU priority actually does
CPU priority tells the operating system how aggressively to schedule one process when several processes want processor time at the same moment. It does not give a Rust server a dedicated core, raise its clock speed, remove a CPU bottleneck, or increase the server’s configured player limit.
RustDedicated runs as a normal operating-system process. Rust itself does not provide a documented in-game setting for its CPU scheduling class, so priority must be changed through Windows or Linux. A higher class can help when the server is competing with other busy processes, but the scheduler still decides when threads run.
The distinction matters because an aggressive setting can make the machine less responsive. Windows describes the High class as time-critical and warns that a High-class application can consume nearly all available processor time. Realtime is more extreme and should not be used as a routine Rust-server optimization.

Start with Above normal or a modest negative niceness value if the host also runs database, monitoring, voice, backup, or desktop workloads. Move to High only after checking that the rest of the machine remains responsive.
Windows: change RustDedicated.exe priority once
This is the quickest way to test whether scheduling contention is affecting your server. It lasts only until that RustDedicated.exe process exits.
- Start the Rust server normally and wait until
RustDedicated.exeappears. - Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, choose More details first.
- Find
RustDedicated.exe, right-click it, choose Set priority, and select High or Above normal. - Accept the confirmation prompt if Windows displays one, then return to the server and observe it under the same workload you normally experience.
Do not choose Realtime for a routine test. If High makes the desktop, remote console, storage process, or monitoring tools sluggish, return to Set priority and select Normal, or stop and relaunch the server.
What this Task Manager change does not do
- It does not edit the Rust server’s configuration files.
- It does not carry over to a newly launched process after a crash, update, or restart.
- It does not reserve a physical or logical CPU for Rust.
- It does not prove that priority was the cause of a lag spike; you need to compare equivalent loads.
Windows: make the priority persistent with a launcher
For a setting that returns after every restart, put the priority switch in the command that starts the server. Microsoft’s start command supports /LOW, /BELOWNORMAL, /NORMAL, /ABOVENORMAL, /HIGH, and /REALTIME. The switch is a Windows process-priority class, not a Rust argument.
Use High priority
A minimal batch file can look like this:

start "" /WAIT /HIGH "D:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"Replace the executable path with the path already used by your server launcher, and keep your existing Rust arguments after the executable path. The empty pair of quotes after start is intentional: when the first argument is quoted, Windows treats it as the window title. The executable path must then be the next quoted argument.
/WAIT keeps the batch file attached until the server process exits. That is useful when another part of the script handles shutdown or restart. If your current launcher already contains a restart loop, add /HIGH to that existing start line rather than creating a second launcher.

Use Above normal as the safer first choice
Some server administrators prefer /ABOVENORMAL so the server receives preference without being as dominant as High. A community example uses this form:
start "" /ABOVENORMAL /WAIT "D:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"That syntax comes from an older community discussion, so verify it with start /? on the Windows build hosting your server. The switch names are supplied by Windows; Rust does not interpret them.
Keep a restart loop, if you already use one
If your operational script relaunches the server after an exit, the priority switch must be on every launch. This example shows the placement without adding Rust-specific arguments:

goto restartThe delay prevents an immediate crash from producing a tight launch loop. Keep your existing logging, update, shutdown, and backup handling around this command; changing priority should not replace those controls.

The same start command supports /AFFINITY followed by a hexadecimal mask. The mask selects which logical processors the new process may use. For example:
start "" /WAIT /HIGH /AFFINITY FE "D:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"On the usual Windows bit numbering, hexadecimal FE sets bits 1 through 7 and leaves bit 0 clear. In other words, it selects logical processors 1–7 on a system where those processors exist. Affinity is independent of priority: the first controls where the process may run, while the second influences how urgently Windows schedules it.

Use an affinity mask only when you have a deliberate CPU-layout reason and have checked the host’s logical-processor numbering. An unsuitable mask can remove useful CPU capacity and make performance worse. If you are testing priority, leave affinity unchanged so that you are changing one variable at a time.
Windows priority classes and their risks

Setting Realtime also requires the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege privilege. Without that privilege, the highest class a caller can set is High. Having the ability to select Realtime is not a reason to use it.

Linux uses niceness values for this purpose. Lower niceness means a higher scheduling preference. The following example changes an already-running process to niceness negative five:
sudo renice -5 -p PIDReplace PID with the numeric process ID of the Rust server. Increasing priority requires root, which is why the command uses sudo. The command affects only that process; a later restart starts with whatever niceness the launcher specifies.
Find the process ID
From the server’s shell, you can inspect matching processes with:
pgrep -af RustDedicatedRead the process ID in the output, confirm that it is the server you intend to change, and then run renice against that number. If several RustDedicated processes are listed, do not apply the change blindly; identify the instance associated with the correct server directory or service.

Undo the change
To return a running process to niceness zero, use:
sudo renice 0 -p PIDStopping the process also removes the temporary setting. A newly started process will not inherit the manual change unless its launch command sets the niceness.

The nice command sets niceness when a new process is launched. From the directory containing the server executable, a direct launch can be written as:
sudo nice -n -5 ./RustDedicatedKeep the Rust arguments used by your existing launcher after ./RustDedicated. The important part is that nice -n -5 appears before the executable. Because a negative niceness raises priority, the command must be run with the required privileges.
If a shell script starts the server, put the same prefix in that script. If a service manager starts it, edit the service’s launch command so that nice -n -5 precedes the executable, then reload the service definition according to that manager’s normal procedure. Do not run both a manual renice and a launch-time niceness change unless you understand which process each command targets.
Check the resulting niceness
Use ps to display the process ID, niceness, and command:
ps -o pid,ni,comm -p PIDThe NI column shows the value currently associated with that process. A negative value indicates a higher scheduling preference than zero; it does not report CPU utilization or guarantee a particular share of processor time.

Will higher priority improve Rust server performance?
There is no published statistic establishing a typical percentage improvement from changing Rust server priority. Reports of better behavior are anecdotal rather than controlled benchmarks, so treat the change as a reversible experiment.
Priority can matter when another process is consuming CPU at the same time, because the scheduler has to choose which runnable work receives attention. It cannot create processing capacity. If the server’s main loop is limited by the speed of one busy core, a priority switch does not make that core run at a higher clock speed. Secondary 2026 hosting guidance likewise emphasizes single-core clock speed over simply adding more cores for Rust workloads.

Observe the server’s own performance indicators and the host’s CPU, memory, and responsiveness before and after the change. Do not treat a single quiet period as proof, and do not quote a universal gain when none has been established.
Failure modes and fixes
Windows says the priority cannot be changed
Close the menu, ensure you selected the actual RustDedicated.exe process, and reopen Task Manager with the administrative access permitted by your Windows account. High is the practical upper limit for a caller that lacks SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege; Realtime is not required for this task.
The priority returns to Normal after a reboot or crash
Task Manager changes apply to the current process only. Put /HIGH or /ABOVENORMAL in the batch file that launches every new instance. For Linux, use launch-time nice -n -5 rather than relying on a one-time renice.
The batch file opens the wrong program or ignores the path
Check the quoted-title rule for start: use an empty title, then the switches, then the quoted executable path, as in start "" /WAIT /HIGH "D:RustServerRustDedicated.exe". Run start /? on the target Windows build to confirm the available switches.
The machine becomes sluggish
Lower the Windows class from High to Above normal or Normal, or restore Linux niceness to zero. Realtime should not be used to solve this symptom. A server that requires the rest of the host to remain responsive should not monopolize processor time.
Nothing appears to change
That result is possible. Priority is only a scheduling hint, and no benchmark establishes a standard Rust-specific benefit. Keep the default setting if the server is not competing with other CPU-heavy work, then investigate the actual bottleneck rather than escalating to Realtime.
