Stop the V Rising server, edit the CastleDecayRateModifier value in its JSON settings, save the file, and restart the server. The normal multiplier is 1.0; setting it to 0 disables castle decay. Because secondary guides disagree about the file and JSON nesting, search your own configuration for the key before changing anything.
What CastleDecayRateModifier does
V Rising uses castle decay to determine how quickly a castle deteriorates after its Blood Essence has run out. The setting is a multiplier: values below the normal setting slow the process, while values above it accelerate the clearing of abandoned castles. It affects the server’s gameplay rules, not its network identity or player limit.

The setting is named CastleDecayRateModifier. A value of 1.0 is the default baseline. A value of 0 turns decay off, so a castle will not crumble because its Blood Essence is empty. Decimal values can be used for a slower or faster rate, provided the server accepts the value as valid JSON.
Before you edit the server
- Have access to the machine or hosting control panel that stores the server files.
- Know whether the server is self-hosted or managed by a provider; the editing method is different.
- Stop the server completely before opening or saving its settings file.
- Make a backup copy of the current JSON file. Keep the original until the new setting has been verified in game.
- Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. The file must remain valid JSON.
Do not edit while the process is running. A running server can rewrite its configuration during shutdown or startup, replacing a manual change or leaving a partially written file.

Find the correct configuration file
Guides disagree about where this key belongs. A low.ms configuration guide places CastleDecayRateModifier inside the CastleStatModifiers_Global object in ServerGameSettings.json, alongside values such as CastleLimit and CastleBloodEssenceDrainModifier. A Steam community post shows the same key at the top level, next to BuildCostModifier and CraftRateModifier. Other guides identify ServerHostSettings.json, while newer guides generally point to ServerGameSettings.json.
Gameplay options such as loot, castles, player-versus-player rules and resource rates are normally associated with the game-settings file. Host settings generally cover infrastructure, including the maximum player count, port, administrator list, save name and security mode. That makes ServerGameSettings.json the more likely starting point for a decay rule, but the key layout is not confirmed for every current build.
Search instead of assuming
- Open the server’s configuration directory while the server is stopped.
- Open
ServerGameSettings.jsonand search forCastleDecay. - If the key is not present, search
ServerHostSettings.jsonand any server-settings JSON file supplied by your provider. - Use the surrounding keys to identify the existing structure. If your file has a
CastleStatModifiers_Globalobject, the key may belong inside it. If the file uses gameplay modifiers at the top level, follow that established pattern. - Do not create two copies of the key in different files. Keep one deliberate entry and record which file you changed.
If the key is absent from both files, do not guess a path or invent a new configuration hierarchy. Check the provider’s current instructions or the server’s generated settings after starting it once, then stop it again before editing.
Step-by-step: change the decay multiplier
1. Stop the server
Use the server console, service manager or hosting panel to perform a full stop. Wait until the process is no longer running. A restart command that leaves the old process alive is not sufficient for safe editing.

2. Back up the settings file
Copy the file you intend to change and give the copy a recognizable name, such as a date-stamped backup. If the server fails to start after the edit, restore this copy rather than trying to repair several changes at once.
3. Locate the existing key
Search for CastleDecayRateModifier. Do not rely on a line number: generated files can be ordered differently between installations. Confirm whether the key is nested under CastleStatModifiers_Global or appears at the top level.

Replace the number after the colon and leave the key spelling intact. Examples of the two layouts reported by community guides are:

}These examples illustrate placement, not a guarantee that both layouts are interchangeable. Preserve the layout already used by your installation. JSON requires double quotes around property names, commas between sibling properties and no trailing comma after the final property.

5. Save and validate the JSON
Save the file as plain text. Check that the editor did not change the extension, insert smart quotes or add comments. If your editor has a JSON validation command, run it before starting the server. A missing brace, an extra comma or a quoted number can prevent the server from loading the file correctly.
6. Check the difficulty preset
One hosting guide advises selecting a custom difficulty preset and saving it before relying on a manual edit, because a preset might overwrite individual settings. That behavior is reported by one source and is not corroborated by a second source, so treat it as a possibility rather than a universal rule. If your panel offers a preset selector, review whether saving it regenerates ServerGameSettings.json; make the decay edit after the preset is saved, then inspect the file again.
7. Restart the server
Start the server normally and wait for it to finish loading. If it refuses to start, stop it, restore the backup and compare the edited line and its surrounding braces. Do not continue changing unrelated settings while diagnosing the failure.
8. Verify in game
Join the server and check the affected castle after the change has loaded. The setting governs decay after Blood Essence is exhausted, so verification may require allowing the relevant castle state to occur and observing whether the rate behaves as intended. If the result is unchanged, stop the server and confirm which file contains the active key, whether a duplicate key exists, and whether a preset or control panel rewrote the value during startup.

The following ranges are community suggestions, not measured performance data or official balance recommendations. They describe how guide authors commonly use the multiplier.

Choose one value for the server’s ruleset and document it for players. A low multiplier reduces pressure on inactive owners but can leave unused castles occupying space longer. A high multiplier frees territory sooner but gives absent players less time to return. The setting changes speed; it does not refill Blood Essence or protect a castle whose upkeep has already lapsed.

Many providers publish a dedicated “change castle decay” procedure with a control-panel route. Labels differ, so use the panel’s current documentation rather than assuming that a field named “decay” writes the same key. If the panel has both a preset editor and a raw JSON editor, save the preset first and make the manual change afterward.

The server will not start after saving
- Restore the backup file and start the server to confirm that the edit caused the failure.
- Check for a missing or extra brace, comma or quotation mark.
- Ensure the value is a JSON number such as
0.5, not a word or a value surrounded by accidental formatting characters. - Confirm that the file was saved with its original name and extension.
The server starts, but decay is unchanged
- Stop the server and search every relevant settings file for
CastleDecayRateModifier. - Remove duplicate entries so that only the intended active location contains the key.
- Check whether a difficulty preset or hosting panel regenerated the file.
- Verify that you edited the configuration belonging to this server instance, not a second save or test installation.
- Restart again after correcting the value and verify in game.
The key keeps disappearing
A generated settings file may omit an option until it is explicitly changed, or a panel may rebuild the file from its own form. Stop the server, apply the value through the panel if one exists, save the preset, and then inspect the resulting JSON. If the key is still absent, follow the provider’s current route instead of repeatedly adding the property to an inactive file.

The setting works briefly, then reverts
Look for an automated startup script, scheduled deployment or panel preset that copies a template over the live settings. Keep a backup of the working file, identify which component performs the overwrite, and apply the value at that source. Restart only after the final configuration has been saved.
Important limits of the available documentation
The key name, its default and the zero-value behavior are consistently described by secondary guides, but the exact file and nesting are not consistent across those guides. No official Stunlock Studios documentation confirming the current build’s location was available in the material reviewed for this article. Treat a configuration that differs from the examples above as a reason to inspect your generated files, not as proof that the server is broken.
