Change the public BungeeCord server-list message in the proxy’s root config.yml, under the active listener’s motd field. Do not edit servers.lobby.motd for this purpose: that value belongs to a configured backend server. Save the YAML with its indentation intact, then restart the proxy (or use the reload method supported by your build or hosting panel) and ping the proxy from Minecraft’s multiplayer screen.
Which BungeeCord MOTD are you trying to change?
BungeeCord configurations can contain more than one MOTD-like value. The one shown to players in Minecraft’s multiplayer menu is the listener-level MOTD in the proxy configuration. SpigotMC describes this value as “The message to be displayed in the multiplayer menu when players ping the server.”

The BungeeCord example configuration includes both a listener-level motd and a separate servers.lobby.motd. They are different settings. Editing the second one will not normally change the message shown when someone pings the proxy address in the multiplayer menu.
Before you edit the file
- Identify the machine, container, or hosting panel that runs the BungeeCord proxy. The proxy’s files are separate from the files for Spigot, Paper, or another backend server.
- Record the address and port players use to connect. If the proxy has several listeners, the listener bound to that address and port must contain the text you want displayed.
- Make a backup copy of the current proxy
config.yml. A backup gives you a quick recovery path if a YAML indentation or quoting mistake prevents the proxy from starting. - Plan to stop the proxy before editing unless your host documents a safe live-edit procedure. A running process or management panel may rewrite the file when it shuts down.
- Use an editor that preserves plain text and spaces. YAML indentation is structural; do not use tab characters for indentation.
Step-by-step: change the public proxy MOTD
- Stop BungeeCord safely. Use the normal stop control in the console or hosting panel, or follow the procedure documented by your host. Do not kill the process while it is writing configuration or logs.
- Open the proxy’s root
config.yml. This is the configuration file in the BungeeCord proxy directory, not a backend server’sserver.propertiesor a backend plugin configuration file. - Locate the
listenersblock. Find the listener used by the address players enter in Minecraft. A typical listener contains amotd, a query port, tab-list behavior, and query settings. - Replace that listener’s
motdvalue. Keepmotdnested under the correct list item. You can use ordinary text and the ampersand color-code style shown in SpigotMC examples. - Preserve YAML syntax. Keep spaces consistent, retain the colon after
motd, and quote the value when punctuation or formatting could be interpreted by YAML. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor did not add a second extension such as
.txtand that the file remains named exactlyconfig.yml. - Start or restart the proxy. If your build or panel supports a documented reload, you may use it. A complete proxy restart is the dependable fallback when the old message remains.
- Verify from Minecraft. Open the multiplayer screen, add or refresh the proxy address, and check the displayed message. Test the same hostname and port that ordinary players use.
Correct YAML placement
The exact surrounding settings can differ between configurations, but the MOTD must remain inside the intended listener item. This example changes the public listener message:

Moving motd outside that list, indenting it with a tab, or attaching it to the wrong listener can make the setting ineffective or cause a configuration error.
If your file has additional listener properties, leave them unchanged unless you also intend to modify them. Replace only the text after motd:, for example:

Using colors and readable formatting
SpigotMC’s configuration guidance demonstrates ampersand color codes in MOTD values, including codes such as &1 and &4. A code is written in the configuration as an ampersand followed by its code character, for example &6 for a gold-toned prefix in the example above.
- Keep the complete value inside the YAML string if it contains spaces or punctuation.
- Use a short first line or opening phrase that still makes sense if a client truncates the display.
- Check the result in the Minecraft client you actually support; different clients can display long or highly formatted messages differently.
- If a color code appears as literal characters, confirm that you edited the listener MOTD and that the proxy restarted with the updated file.
Do not paste formatting characters from a rich-text editor into YAML. Enter the ampersand codes as plain text and keep the file encoded as ordinary text.
Why changing servers.lobby.motd did not work

motd: '&fLobby server'That setting describes the configured lobby backend. It is not the public proxy response that appears when a player pings the network in the multiplayer menu. To change the public response, edit the motd under the listener used by the proxy:

Multiple listeners: choose the one players actually ping
Some deployments define more than one listener, for example separate addresses or ports for different entry points. Each listener can have its own MOTD. Changing one listener will not change the response from another.

- Note the hostname and port used in the multiplayer server entry you are testing.
- In
config.yml, inspect every item underlistenersand compare its bind address and port with that connection details. - Edit the
motdbelonging to the matching listener. - Restart the proxy and test that exact hostname and port again.
If a hostname resolves through a separate proxy, load balancer, or forwarding service, verify that the endpoint ultimately reaches the BungeeCord instance whose file you edited. Otherwise you may be changing a valid configuration that no player is contacting.
Reload versus full restart
Reload behavior depends on the BungeeCord build and on the hosting panel or management tooling around it. Some environments provide a reload operation; others require a stop and start. A reload that completes without an error does not guarantee that every connected client or status cache has refreshed.
- Use the reload procedure explicitly supported by your build or host.
- If the old MOTD persists, perform a full proxy restart rather than repeatedly editing the file.
- After restarting, refresh the multiplayer entry or remove and re-add it so the client requests a new status response.
- Do not assume restarting only the lobby backend will update a proxy-level MOTD; the proxy process owns the listener response.
Troubleshooting an unchanged or broken MOTD
The old message is still displayed
- Confirm that you edited the proxy’s root
config.yml, not a backend Spigot or Paper configuration. - Check that the edited
motdis underlisteners, not underservers.lobbyor another backend name. - Check for multiple listeners and make sure the hostname and port in Minecraft match the listener you changed.
- Restart the proxy fully. A panel reload may leave the old process or a cached status response active.
- Look for a plugin or hosting panel that regenerates
config.ymlduring startup. If it does, change the managed setting or template instead of repeatedly editing the generated file.
The proxy will not start after the edit
- Restore the backup and start the proxy. If it starts, the problem is in the edited YAML rather than the MOTD concept.
- Check for a missing quote, an extra quote, a deleted colon, or a tab character.
- Compare the indentation of
motdwith the neighboring listener properties. It should be at the same nesting level as those properties. - Re-enter the message as a simple quoted string, start the proxy, and add formatting codes one at a time.
- Read the proxy console output for the line and configuration section reported as invalid. Correct that location before attempting another restart.
Colors or punctuation look wrong
- Verify that the value is quoted and that ampersand codes were entered as plain text.
- Make sure the code is inside the listener MOTD and not accidentally copied into a YAML key.
- Test a minimal value such as
'Welcome'. If that displays correctly, add the longer text and color codes gradually. - Check the message in the actual Minecraft client and server-list entry used by players, since a different endpoint may be returning a different configuration.
The file keeps reverting
A hosting panel, deployment script, container template, or plugin may write the proxy configuration on startup. Compare the file before and after a restart. If your change disappears, locate the panel field or template that supplies the listener MOTD and update that source. Editing a generated file is temporary when an automated system owns it.

Safe editing and recovery checklist
- Stop the proxy or follow the host’s documented safe-edit process.
- Back up
config.ymlwith a dated copy. - Edit only the intended listener-level
motd. - Use spaces, not tabs, and preserve the existing indentation.
- Keep the value quoted when punctuation or ampersand formatting is present.
- Save as plain text with the original filename.
- Start the proxy and watch the console for configuration errors.
- Ping the exact public hostname and port from Minecraft.
- If startup fails, restore the backup, start successfully, and reapply a smaller change.

query_enabled: falseIn a configuration with multiple listeners, the player’s connection port determines which message is returned. Edit each listener separately if every entry point should show the same text.
How to verify the change conclusively
- Check the saved file on the proxy host and confirm the new text is present under the correct listener.
- Confirm the proxy process restarted after the save, rather than only a backend server.
- Use the same DNS name, address, and port that players use; testing an internal address can reach a different listener.
- Refresh the server entry in Minecraft’s multiplayer screen and compare the displayed message with the exact text in the file.
- If the result differs, inspect listener selection and any plugin or panel that can overwrite the configuration.
Key distinction to remember
For the message players see while pinging your BungeeCord network, edit listeners[].motd in the proxy’s root config.yml. A value such as servers.lobby.motd belongs to an individual backend server. Preserve YAML structure, use quoted ampersand-formatted text when appropriate, and use a full proxy restart when a supported reload does not apply the change.
