Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To change settings in an existing Space Engineers world, return to the main screen, choose Load Game, select the save, and choose Edit Settings. Change the available options, save, and reload the world. This is the safest method because the game writes the save configuration for you.
Two creation-time choices are exceptions: Scenario template and Asteroid amount cannot be changed after the world is created. Settings hidden from the normal editor may be available under Advanced > Experimental Settings on PC, while Xbox and PlayStation do not expose every experimental option.
Quick answer: use Load Game, not New Game
Existing worlds are edited from the load workflow. On the main screen, select Load Game, choose the world in the list, and click Edit Settings. The official World Settings instructions state: “On the Main screen, click Load Game, select an existing game from the list, and then click Edit Settings.”
After changing the options, save the settings and load the world again. The labels and available controls can differ between game versions and between PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If an option is not visible, check the advanced and experimental sections before assuming it is unavailable.

Which settings can be changed in an existing save?
The editor exposes most saved-game rules. The exact list depends on your version and platform, but the following categories are commonly available from Load Game > Edit Settings.
| Setting area | What you can typically adjust | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game mode | Switch between Creative and Survival | Availability and related controls can vary by version; verify the resulting world after reloading. |
| Online mode | Change how the world is made available for multiplayer | Network and platform permissions can affect what other players can do. |
| Player limits | Change the maximum number of players or similar capacity rules | Actual multiplayer capacity can also be constrained by the platform or server host. |
| Auto-save | Enable or adjust automatic saving behavior | Changing save frequency affects recovery points and storage activity. |
| Backup count | Set how many automatic backups the game keeps | Backups are part of the save system; keep an independent copy before major changes. |
| Progression | Enable or disable progression rules when the option is offered | Changing progression can alter how technologies and blocks become available. |
| Other world rules | Additional survival, environment, or session options shown by your build | Controls differ by release and may be hidden until advanced options are enabled. |
Editing a setting does not recreate the world. It changes the rules applied to the existing save. A setting that controls how a new world is generated may therefore be unavailable even when related gameplay rules remain editable.
Step-by-step: edit a local world through the game menu
- Leave the world. Save and return to the main screen. Do not edit files while the world is still open.
- Open the save list. Select Load Game on the main screen.
- Select the existing world. Confirm that the name, thumbnail, and date identify the save you intend to change.
- Open the editor. Choose Edit Settings. If your build shows an Edit button instead, use that control for the selected save.
- Change the required options. Review the normal settings first, then open Advanced and, where present, Experimental Settings for additional controls.
- Save the changes. Confirm the settings and return to the save list if the interface requests it.
- Reload the world. Open the edited save and test the rule you changed. For a multiplayer world, verify the result with the same connection mode and permissions used by your players.
If the game presents a warning about experimental features, read it before accepting. Experimental controls can be version-dependent, and a setting visible on PC may not exist on a console build.
Finding hidden options under Advanced and Experimental Settings
Some session rules are deliberately separated from the standard editor. In the save editor, open Advanced and look for Experimental Settings. On PC, this area can expose options that are not shown in the basic view.
Xbox and PlayStation do not expose every PC experimental feature. A missing control on a console is therefore not necessarily a damaged save or an incorrect menu path. Check the documentation for your game version and platform, and do not substitute a PC-only file-editing procedure on a console where you cannot access the save files.

When a control is present but disabled, first check whether another rule depends on it. Some settings become meaningful only in a particular game mode or online configuration. Change one related option at a time, save, reload, and verify the result before making additional changes.
Settings that cannot be changed after world creation
Scenario template
The scenario template is a creation-time choice. The official World Settings documentation identifies it as a setting that cannot be changed after the world has been created. Editing an existing save will not convert it into another scenario template.
Asteroid amount
Asteroid amount is also fixed at creation. The existing save cannot be edited to regenerate its original world with a different asteroid quantity. If you need a different asteroid setup, create a new world with the desired amount and transfer only the content that your chosen game mechanics and tools support.
These limits matter because they describe world generation, not ordinary session rules. Changing Creative/Survival, autosave, progression, or multiplayer options operates on the current save; changing the scenario template or asteroid amount would require a different generated world.
Editing a scenario or Workshop world
Preconfigured scenarios and Workshop saves use the same basic editor, but the order is important:

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
- Create or download the scenario or Workshop world.
- Open it once so the game creates a local save.
- Save and close the world completely.
- Return to Load Game and open the save’s folder or save details.
- Select the save and choose Edit or Edit Settings, depending on the interface.
- Make only the changes you understand, save, and reload.
The official guidance warns that editing a preconfigured scenario can break its intended gameplay. A scenario may depend on a particular progression path, starting condition, or rule combination. Keep an untouched copy of the original before experimenting, and test the edited version separately from a campaign or multiplayer world that matters to you.
When the setting is not in the menu: manual save-file editing
Many session values are stored in the save files. The official SessionSettings reference prioritizes sandbox_config.sbc for manual setting edits. Some of the same values can also be changed from World Settings, the in-game Admin menu, or a Dedicated Server GUI.
Manual editing is a fallback, not the first choice. It requires a complete backup, a stopped game or server, and valid XML syntax. A malformed file or an incorrect value can prevent the world from loading or cause the game to ignore the change.
Local Windows save location
On Windows PC, local save folders are under:
%appdata%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamId>
Each world has its own folder below the account directory. The official modding guidance identifies Sandbox.sbc as containing world settings as well as player and faction data. Because that file carries more than one type of data, avoid broad find-and-replace operations and preserve every element you do not intend to change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Safe XML-editing procedure
- Exit the world. Return to the main screen and close the game if you are editing a local save. A running game can overwrite your manual changes when it saves.
- Stop the server. For a dedicated server, use the provider’s stop or shutdown control and wait until the process is fully stopped.
- Back up outside the world folder. Copy the entire save folder to another location. Do not keep the only backup inside the folder you are about to edit.
- Identify the configuration file. Use sandbox_config.sbc for prioritized session-setting edits. Do not confuse it with a new-world configuration file.
- Preserve XML structure. Change only the intended value, keep opening and closing tags balanced, and retain the file’s encoding and surrounding elements.
- Save one change at a time. A single, documented change makes it possible to identify the cause if the world fails to load.
- Test a copy first. Load the edited copy and verify the setting before replacing the live save.
- Restore if necessary. If the world behaves unexpectedly, stop the game or server and replace the edited folder with the untouched backup.
Do not assume that a value found in an online example belongs in every release. Session-setting names, accepted values, and defaults can change. Use the SessionSettings reference for the game version you run, and avoid adding undocumented tags.

Menu editing versus manual XML editing
| Consideration | Load Game > Edit Settings | Manual XML edit |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | Safest for supported options because the game validates and writes the save. | Higher risk of syntax errors, unsupported values, or an unbootable save. |
| Settings coverage | Covers most ordinary world rules exposed by your version. | Can reach stored values that the interface does not expose, if the version supports them. |
| Game or server state | Performed through the normal load workflow. | Requires the local game or dedicated server to be stopped before editing. |
| Platform availability | Available wherever the platform exposes the relevant setting. | Practical mainly on PC or on hosted servers that provide file access; console users generally cannot use this route. |
| Reversibility | Use the game’s saved settings and built-in backups, with an independent copy recommended. | Reversible only if you made a complete backup outside the world folder. |
Choose the menu for a supported control. Use XML only when the setting is absent from the interface and you can safely stop, copy, edit, and test the save.
Changing settings on a dedicated server
A hosted world has two configuration layers that are easy to confuse. A provider dashboard may expose controls for the existing world; if it does, use those controls and follow the provider’s restart procedure. Otherwise, the existing world’s configuration is stored with the save, commonly at:
/config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc
The exact host path can differ, so confirm the directory shown by your provider before editing. Stop the server, copy the complete world folder outside the live save directory, edit the prioritized configuration file, restart the server, and verify the result in game.
Do not edit the wrong server file
SessionSettings in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg is used when creating a new world. It should not be treated as the configuration for an already-created world. Editing that block may affect future world creation without changing the save your players currently use.
Server-specific checklist
- Confirm that the dashboard is operating on the correct world, not a template or a newly generated instance.
- Stop the server and wait for the host to report that it is offline before copying or editing files.
- Back up the complete save outside the live world directory.
- Use the host’s documented restart method after saving the edit.
- Reconnect and test with an account that has the same permissions as ordinary players.
- Keep the backup until the setting has survived a restart and a normal save cycle.
How to verify a change without risking the main world
Verification should test the actual behavior, not just the value shown in a menu. For a local save, make a duplicate of the world folder and use the copy for testing. For a server, use a separate test world or a maintenance window agreed with players.

- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Record the original setting and the intended new value.
- Make the change through the menu or a backed-up configuration file.
- Load the world and perform an action that demonstrates the rule, such as checking whether the selected game mode or progression behavior is active.
- Exit normally so the game writes the save.
- Reload or restart the server and perform the same check again.
- Only after both checks succeed should you apply the change to the live world.
This process distinguishes a setting that was merely displayed from one that was actually persisted and enforced.

“Edit Settings” is missing
Make sure you selected a save under Load Game, not a new-game template or a currently running session. Some interface versions label the control Edit. If the option remains absent, the save may be a platform-managed or protected scenario, or the selected item may not have been opened and saved locally yet.
The setting is not listed
Open Advanced > Experimental Settings and check the platform limitation. PC can expose experimental controls that Xbox and PlayStation do not. If the setting still does not appear, consult the version-specific SessionSettings reference before attempting a file edit.
The change disappears after restarting
Confirm that you edited the correct save folder and that the game or server was stopped before the change. On a server, verify that the dashboard is not restoring a template during restart and that you edited the existing world’s sandbox_config.sbc, not SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg‘s new-world SessionSettings block.
The world fails to load after an XML edit
Stop the game or server, restore the complete backup, and confirm that the restored folder is outside the live directory before copying it back. Do not keep making edits to a damaged file; first return to a known-good save, then test one documented change in a duplicate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA scenario no longer behaves as intended
Restore the untouched scenario save. Preconfigured scenarios can rely on their original rules and starting conditions, so an apparently harmless change may invalidate the designed sequence. Keep custom experiments in a separate copy.
Players report different behavior
Check whether everyone connected to the same world and whether the server restarted after the edit. Online mode, player limits, permissions, and platform differences can affect what each player sees. Test with a normal player account as well as an administrator account.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Changing a visible rule such as game mode, autosave, progression, or player limits: use Load Game > Edit Settings.
- Looking for a PC-only option: inspect Advanced > Experimental Settings first.
- Trying to change Scenario template or Asteroid amount: stop; those are creation-time settings and require a different world.
- Editing a Workshop or preconfigured scenario: make a clean copy, open and save it once, then edit the copy and expect that its intended gameplay could break.
- Managing a dedicated server: use the dashboard for the existing world when available; otherwise stop the server and edit its saved world’s configuration after making an external backup.
- Using manual XML: reserve it for settings unavailable in the UI, preserve syntax, and test the backup copy before touching the live save.
Key points to remember
- Existing saves are edited from Load Game > Edit Settings.
- Scenario template and Asteroid amount cannot be changed after creation.
- Advanced > Experimental Settings may reveal additional PC controls, but consoles do not expose every experimental feature.
- For manual edits, sandbox_config.sbc is the prioritized save configuration file; Sandbox.sbc also contains world, player, and faction data.
- Back up the entire save outside the world folder before editing.
- On dedicated servers, the existing world configuration is separate from the new-world SessionSettings block in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg.
