Godlike.Host offers hosted Team Fortress 2 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Change a Team Fortress 2 server’s tags by editing tf/cfg/server.cfg, adding a quoted sv_tags value with comma-separated descriptors, saving the file, and restarting the dedicated server. Then run status in the server console and check the sv_tags field. For example:
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"Tags help players filter and find community servers; they are not required for a server to appear in the community list.

sv_tags is the Team Fortress 2 dedicated-server setting that publishes descriptive “gametags.” Steamworks describes gametags as an optional string that lets users filter servers in matchmaking and server-browser interfaces. In practical terms, a player can use a browser filter or search associated with a tag such as a region, map, or play style, and your server may be easier to discover when the description is accurate.
Tags do not replace the server name, map, MOTD, or other configuration. They are metadata attached to the server listing. A server can remain visible in the community list without custom tags, so adding them is a discoverability aid rather than a listing requirement.

Before you edit the file
- Have access to the dedicated server’s files, either directly on the machine or through your hosting panel’s file editor.
- Have console access or another way to restart the server after saving the configuration.
- Decide on a short set of descriptors that truthfully describes the server. The official material does not provide a current, exhaustive vocabulary, so examples such as
EU,Europe, andHightowershould be treated as descriptive examples, not mandatory or canonical values.
Make a copy of the existing server.cfg before editing if you need an easy rollback. The exact filesystem root depends on how the server was installed. A managed container layout may expose the file at /home/container/tf/cfg/server.cfg, while a self-hosted installation will have its own Team Fortress 2 server directory. The part that matters is the server’s tf/cfg/server.cfg path.
Change the tags step by step

Open
tf/cfg/server.cfgOn a self-hosted server, browse to the Team Fortress 2 dedicated-server directory and open
tf/cfg/server.cfgin a text editor. In a hosting panel, open the file manager or configuration editor and locate the same relative path. If the panel uses a different root directory, follow its displayed startup layout rather than assuming a universal absolute path.Special offer. Find or add the
sv_tagslineIf the file already contains
sv_tags, replace that setting rather than leaving two competing lines. If it is absent, add a new line. Put the entire value in one pair of double quotes and separate descriptors with commas:sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"Steamworks describes gametags as usually comma- or semicolon-separated. Commas are the clearest choice for a normal
server.cfgentry. Keep the value simple: one quoted string, with no extra configuration syntax on the same line. -
Use accurate, concise descriptors
Choose labels players can understand and that actually apply to the server. A regional label can describe where the server is hosted; a map label can identify a map-focused server; a mode or community label can explain the server’s purpose. Do not stuff the value with unrelated words. The available sources do not establish a current official list of every accepted tag, so do not assume that an unverified term has special status.

Save the file
Use the editor’s save command and confirm that the file was written to the server’s active
tf/cfgdirectory. A panel may have separate “save” and “apply” controls; complete both if the panel presents them.The Tool Desk

Restart the dedicated server
Restart the server after saving. The startup configuration is loaded during the restart, so changing the file without restarting can leave the running process with its previous value. Use the hosting panel’s restart control or restart the dedicated-server process on a self-hosted machine.

Verify from the console
After the server is back online, open its console and run:
statusValve’s June 11, 2015 Team Fortress 2 update notes state that dedicated-server
statusoutput includessv_tags. Inspect the output and confirm that the value matches the line you saved. This check distinguishes a file-editing problem from a browser-display delay or filtering issue.
Correct syntax and examples
Basic regional and map description
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"This is a single quoted value containing three comma-separated descriptors. The capitalization shown is readable to humans; the important points are the quoted string and separators.

Replacing an existing value
If the file contains:
sv_tags="oldtag,anotheroldtag"replace that line with the complete new value:
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"Do not leave the old line elsewhere in the file. Keeping multiple assignments makes it harder to tell which value the server loaded and can lead to confusing verification results.
Semicolon-separated values
Steamworks documentation says gametags are usually comma- or semicolon-separated. If an existing deployment standard uses semicolons, that form is supported by the documented convention, for example:
sv_tags="EU;Europe;Hightower"For a new entry, commas are generally easier for administrators and players to read. Whichever separator you choose, keep the value inside one pair of quotes.
Do not leave the value empty
An empty assignment such as sv_tags="" is not a valid way to clear tags for this purpose. Steamworks states that SetGameTags rejects a null or empty string. If you want no custom descriptors, remove the custom line and allow the server’s normal behavior instead of submitting an empty value.
Why your tags may not appear immediately
The server was not restarted
The most common configuration mistake is saving the file and continuing to run the old process. Restart the dedicated server, then run status. If the console still shows the old value, confirm that you edited the active server’s file rather than a similarly named installation or backup.

You edited the wrong path
Managed hosts can expose a panel-specific root, and a container may show a path such as /home/container/tf/cfg/server.cfg. The absolute path is not universal. Use the panel’s file tree and startup layout to identify the directory that the running instance uses. A correctly formatted line in an inactive copy will have no effect.
The line is malformed
Check for a missing quote, an extra quote inside the value, or a second sv_tags assignment. The intended form is one line with one quoted, non-empty string. Keep separators inside the quotes and avoid putting comments or unrelated settings on that line.

Valve has changed automatic tag behavior over time. Team Fortress 2 update notes dated February 3, 2010 say that bots is added to sv_tags when a server is running bots. Therefore, the value shown by status can include an automatically added descriptor even when it is not present in your file. Treat the console output as the authoritative check of what the running server is publishing.
An old expectation about sv_alltalk
Valve’s March 6, 2008 update notes say sv_alltalk was removed from the convars that affect custom server tags. Do not expect changing sv_alltalk to create or remove a current custom tag. Configure the explicit sv_tags value instead.
The browser cache or filter hides the server
Tags are used for filtering, not guaranteed placement. A browser may need to refresh its server list, and a filter that does not match the exact published value can hide an otherwise online server. First verify the value with status; then clear or broaden the browser’s filters and refresh the list. A missing tag does not by itself mean the server has been removed from the community list.

Self-hosted server versus managed hosting
The configuration itself is the same: both arrangements use the Team Fortress 2 server’s tf/cfg/server.cfg. The practical difference is how you reach the file and restart the process.

Choose the arrangement that gives you reliable access to the active file and a dependable restart path. A managed panel does not change the sv_tags syntax; it only changes how you perform the file and process operations.
Keeping tags useful for players
Describe stable characteristics
Use tags for qualities a player can reasonably rely on when choosing a server, such as its broad region or a map focus. If a descriptor is temporary, remove it when the server no longer matches. Stale metadata can cause players to join with incorrect expectations.
Keep the list short
A concise list is easier to scan and filter than a long string of marginal keywords. The Steamworks description treats the value as an optional filtering string, not as a full advertisement. Put the clearest descriptors first and avoid repeating the same idea with several near-duplicates.
Check the live value after operational changes
Because automatic behavior can modify the published value, run status after enabling bots or making other server changes that could affect tags. Record the output if you need to diagnose a mismatch between the file and the server browser.
