Conan Exiles server-wide settings are stored in ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. The dependable process is to let the server create that file, stop the server, make a backup, edit the setting in its existing section, save it, and restart the server. On Linux, Conan Exiles uses the Windows server build through a compatibility layer, so the configuration directory normally still uses the WindowsServer name.

Setting names and available options can change with game updates. Use the keys already present in your own generated file instead of copying a list from an older guide. If an option is missing, add it only under the section that matches the format used by the rest of the file.

Decide which kind of server you are editing

The exact clicks and file browser depend on how the server is hosted, but the configuration data is the same. Identify your setup first:

Server type Normal way to change settings What you control
Self-hosted Windows server Open the generated ServerSettings.ini in the server installation directory. Files, process, permissions, backups, and restart timing.
Self-hosted Linux machine Use the Windows build through Wine or another compatibility layer, then edit the file in that installation’s saved configuration directory. The compatibility layer, service definition, files, and restart process.
Managed game-server host Use the provider’s configuration editor or file manager, if available. Only the controls exposed by the provider; the panel may apply or regenerate files during a restart.

Do not edit a client installation on your gaming PC when you intend to change a dedicated server. The server’s saved configuration belongs to the machine or hosting account that runs the dedicated process.

Find ServerSettings.ini

Windows path

On a Windows installation, the usual relative path is:

ConanSandboxinash?

Use the actual server root followed by:

ConanSandboxin

The configuration file itself is located at:

ConanSandboxin

Search directly for ServerSettings.ini if your installation layout differs. The commonly documented full example is C: extbackslash ConanServer extbackslash ConanSandbox extbackslash Saved extbackslash Config extbackslash WindowsServer extbackslash ServerSettings.ini; the drive, parent directory, and installation name vary by setup.

In normal Windows notation, the important portion is:

ConanSandbox	extbackslash Saved	extbackslash Config	extbackslash WindowsServer	extbackslash ServerSettings.ini

Linux running the Windows server build

Conan Exiles does not provide a native Linux dedicated-server build. Linux installations described by the official setup documentation run the Windows build through Wine, commonly under a service manager and an xvfb-run display wrapper. Because the executable is still the Windows build, the saved configuration directory normally remains ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/.

An example installation may live below /home/server, but that is not a universal location. Follow the service user’s home directory, the installation path in the service definition, or the path shown by your host’s file manager. One hosting guide has reported a separate LinuxServer directory, but that layout is not confirmed by the official setup documentation. Check which directory your server actually creates before editing; do not rename folders to force one layout.

Managed hosting panel

A managed host may hide the filesystem and provide an INI editor, a text editor, or individual switches for common PvP, PvE, performance, and clan rules. Use that interface when it exists. Panels can place files in provider-specific locations and can perform a controlled stop and start, so manually editing a guessed path may have no effect.

Generate the configuration before editing

The configuration files are normally created on the first successful server run. If you cannot find ServerSettings.ini:

  1. Start the dedicated server using your normal launcher, service, or hosting-panel control.
  2. Wait long enough for the process to finish initialization rather than stopping it immediately after launch.
  3. Stop it cleanly from the same control you normally use.
  4. Search the server installation for ServerSettings.ini and inspect the Saved/Config directories that were created.

If the file is still absent, verify that you started the dedicated server rather than the game client, that the process can write to its installation directory, and that you are looking as the same operating-system user that runs the service.

Change a setting safely: the exact workflow

1. Stop the server completely

Use the server’s shutdown command, service manager, or hosting-panel stop button and wait until the process has exited. Conan Exiles keeps settings in memory while it runs and may write them back to disk during shutdown. Editing while the process is active can therefore be overwritten by the values that were loaded earlier.

2. Make a dated backup

Copy ServerSettings.ini to a separate location before changing anything. A useful filename includes the date and purpose, such as ServerSettings-before-pvp-change-2026-10-14.ini. Keep at least one untouched copy outside the live configuration directory so a cleanup job, reinstall, or panel synchronization cannot remove every fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Open the file as plain text

Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Keep the file’s existing section headers, key spelling, equals signs, and line structure. Do not paste settings copied from a different game version without checking that the key exists or belongs in the same section in your generated file.

4. Locate the correct section and key

INI files group keys beneath section headers in square brackets. Find the setting’s existing key in your file and edit the value on that line. If the key is not present, consult the current documentation for your game build and place the new entry beneath the section whose other keys use the same category and syntax. Never put a key beneath an unrelated section simply because it is near the bottom of the file.

5. Change only the value you intend to change

Make one logical change at a time when troubleshooting. Preserve capitalization and punctuation in the key name, and use the value format shown by neighboring entries. Avoid adding quotation marks, spaces, comments, or alternate spellings unless the existing file demonstrates that format. Exact option names and defaults are not fixed across every update, so the generated file on your server is the authority for what is currently available.

6. Save and confirm the file location

Save over the live file only after checking the full path in the editor’s title bar or save dialog. A frequent mistake is editing a backup, a downloaded copy, or a similarly named file in a client folder. Reopen the file briefly and confirm that the intended line is still present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Start the server again

Restart through the same launcher, service, or panel used to stop it. Treat a restart as required for every change. A hot-reload command has been mentioned by some guides, but it is not consistently verified; do not depend on it unless you have tested that command on your exact server build.

8. Verify in-game and on disk

Join the server with an administrator account or a test character and check the behavior that the setting should affect. If the result is wrong, stop the server before making another edit, compare the file with your backup, and change only one variable. Some settings affect newly created characters, newly loaded areas, or future events rather than existing state, so verify according to what the option is intended to control.

Organize changes by the setting’s purpose

Guides commonly group ServerSettings.ini options into three broad areas. The names and availability of individual keys can change, so use these categories to find the relevant part of your own file rather than treating them as a fixed option list.

PvP and PvE rules

Rules governing player combat, damage, interaction, and related world behavior are generally kept with the server’s gameplay settings. Before changing one, write down the intended rule in plain language and identify how you will test it with two accounts or a willing player. A setting that appears to affect combat may have separate consequences for structures, thralls, or events; test the specific behavior your community cares about.

Performance and progression

Performance-related values can alter the amount of work the server performs and may trade simulation detail for responsiveness. Change one performance variable at a time, record the previous value, and watch server logs, frame-time symptoms reported by players, and restart behavior. Do not assume that a value recommended for one hardware configuration is safe on another.

Clan and social configuration

Clan limits and social rules can affect membership, ownership, and administration. Make a roster and backup before lowering a limit or changing ownership-related behavior. Confirm how the game handles existing clans before applying a restrictive value; changing a cap does not necessarily reorganize existing data automatically.

Self-hosted Windows, Linux/Wine, and managed hosting compared

Consideration Windows self-hosting Linux with Wine Managed host
File access Direct access to the installation and saved configuration folders. Direct access, but the path belongs to the Wine installation and service user. Panel editor or provider file manager; direct access may not be available.
Initial effort Install and maintain the Windows server process. Set up Wine, the service, and the virtual display arrangement used by the installation. Provider prepares the runtime and exposes supported controls.
Restart control Stop and start the process yourself. Use the configured service manager and allow the process to exit fully. Use the panel’s stop, save, and restart workflow.
Main risk Editing while running can be overwritten at shutdown. Editing the wrong Wine prefix or service user’s copy can leave the live server unchanged. The panel may regenerate, normalize, or overwrite files during deployment.

For managed servers, follow the provider’s documented save and restart order even if it differs from a local workflow. If the panel offers both individual switches and raw-file editing, do not use both for the same change until you know which one is authoritative.

Troubleshoot settings that do not apply

The file keeps reverting

The most common cause is an edit made while the server was still running. Stop it, wait for the process to exit, restore your backup if necessary, make the change, and restart. On a managed service, also check whether an automatic configuration template is applied at startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nothing changes in game

Confirm that you edited the live server’s file, not a local client copy or an old installation. Check the spelling and section placement against keys already generated by your build. Restart fully, then test the exact behavior the key is supposed to control. Some changes are not retroactive, so test a newly affected object, character, area, or event where appropriate.

The server fails to start after an edit

Stop trying additional changes. Restore the last known-good backup, start the server, and confirm recovery. Then reapply one change at a time while preserving the original syntax. A malformed section, misspelled key, unexpected character, or value format copied from another version can prevent correct loading.

You cannot write the file

Check that the editor has permission to write as the server’s operating-system user and that the file is not read-only. On Linux, inspect ownership and permissions in the Wine installation and make sure you are editing the prefix used by the service. On a managed host, use the panel’s editor or ask the provider to enable file access rather than changing an inaccessible path.

The expected folder is missing

Run the dedicated server once, stop it cleanly, and search for the generated file. If multiple installations exist, inspect the service or launch configuration to identify which executable is actually running. On Linux, do not infer the path from a Windows tutorial’s drive letter; follow the service user’s installation root.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update changes or removes an option

Keep your backup, compare the newly generated file with the previous version, and reintroduce only keys supported by the updated build. Treat old guides as hints for categories, not as authoritative lists of names or defaults. If a key is no longer generated, verify current game documentation before adding it manually.

Backups and repeatable administration

For a private test server, a dated copy before each change is usually sufficient. For an active community server, keep a small change log containing the date, the key changed, the old value, the new value, and who approved it. Store configuration backups separately from the live directory and restrict write access to trusted administrators.

When several settings must change together, stop the server once, make one backup, apply the related edits, and restart once. If the result is unexpected, the change log lets you restore the complete prior state instead of guessing which line caused the problem. Keep world and database backups separately; copying ServerSettings.ini protects configuration but does not replace a backup of player or world data.

Pre-restart checklist

  • The dedicated server, not a client, is the target.
  • The process is stopped and no shutdown write is still in progress.
  • A dated backup exists outside the live configuration folder.
  • The file is under the installation’s ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer tree, or you are using the managed host’s supported editor.
  • The key is in the correct section and follows the syntax already present in the file.
  • Only the intended value changed.
  • You know how you will test the result after restarting.

Following that sequence avoids the two failures that account for most apparent configuration problems: editing the wrong copy and allowing a running server to overwrite a correct edit.
