To change stations while you are in a vehicle, tap the radio control to cycle through stations. Hold the same control to open the radio wheel and choose a station directly. The commonly documented defaults are Q on PC and left on the D-pad on a controller. On PC, select with the mouse or scroll wheel; on consoles, use the right stick.
These are default bindings rather than guarantees for every control scheme. Remapped controls, a different input method, GTA Online menu changes, or a temporary game bug can alter what happens. If the expected input does not work, check Pause Menu > Settings > Controls.

Tap to cycle, hold to choose
GTA 5 uses one radio input for two actions. A short press advances through stations one at a time. Holding that input opens the radial radio wheel, which lets you move straight to a particular station instead of passing through every option.
| Action | PC default | PlayStation/Xbox controller default | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycle stations | Tap Q | Tap left on the D-pad | The next station is selected immediately. |
| Open the radio wheel | Hold Q | Hold left on the D-pad | Move the mouse or scroll wheel on PC, or the right stick on a controller, to highlight a station. |
The station control is intended for vehicle use. If you are walking, inside an interior, or using a property where the radio interaction is malfunctioning, the input may not behave as it does in a car.

Which method should you use?
Use tapping when the desired station is only one or two positions away. Every tap moves to the next available station, so it is quick and requires no second input. Use the wheel when you already know the station you want but do not want to move through the entire list. The wheel is also useful when you want to confirm the station visually before releasing the control.
The distinction is based on press duration: a brief press is a command to advance, while a sustained press is a command to display the wheel. If the wheel does not appear, hold the input continuously rather than repeatedly tapping it.
Change stations on PC with a keyboard and mouse
Cycle through stations
- Enter a vehicle in Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Tap Q once. The game switches to the next available station.
- Continue tapping Q until the station you want is selected.
Use short taps when you already know roughly where the station is in the list. Each press advances the selection, so this is the fastest method when only one or two stations away from your target. Do not hold the key if your intention is simply to move one station; holding changes the input into the wheel command.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the radio wheel
- While driving, press and hold Q.
- Keep the key held while the radio wheel appears.
- Move the mouse or use the scroll wheel to highlight the station you want.
- Release the radio input after the desired station is highlighted.
The wheel is more efficient when stations are far apart in the list. If holding Q only changes stations instead of showing the wheel, treat that as a control-binding issue and verify the active keyboard scheme in the Controls settings.
When keyboard prompts do not match
PC players can connect a controller while still running the PC version. In that situation, the prompts and active input may reflect the device the game is currently using. If the screen shows controller prompts, test the controller mapping; if it shows keyboard prompts, test Q or the key displayed in Settings. Selecting the device you are actually holding avoids diagnosing the wrong binding.
Change stations with a PlayStation or Xbox controller
Cycle with the D-pad
- Get into a vehicle.
- Tap left on the D-pad.
- Tap it again to move to the next station until the desired one is active.
Keep each press brief. A long press is reserved for opening the wheel, so pressing and releasing quickly is the clearest way to advance one station at a time.
Pick directly from the wheel
- Press and hold left on the D-pad.
- When the wheel appears, move the right stick toward the station you want.
- Release the radio input once the station is highlighted.
This default description covers the commonly documented controller behavior. Rockstar does not separately confirm every console generation’s radio-wheel behavior in the material available for this guide, and your prompt can differ if the controller layout has been customized. If the right stick appears to move the player or camera instead of the selection, make sure the radio wheel is still open and that the left-D-pad input remains held.
Story Mode and GTA Online use the same basic action
The tap-and-hold behavior is the normal vehicle-radio interaction in both Story Mode and GTA Online. The important difference is the optional customization available in Online: Radio Station Favorites can reduce the stations shown on the wheel. You do not need that option to change stations; it is useful when you regularly listen to only a few stations.

- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.

In either mode, test the control after entering a vehicle. A property, interior, or other context can behave differently from ordinary driving, especially when a temporary issue affects radio controls.
Check or restore the control binding
GTA 5 lets you inspect controls from the Pause Menu. Rockstar’s support guidance places control options under the Settings tab in both Story Mode and Online.
- Pause the game.
- Open Settings.
- Open Controls.
- Confirm the selected input method and control scheme.
- Look for the radio or radio-wheel action and note its current binding.
- If the action has been remapped, use that displayed input instead of Q or left on the D-pad.
Input can also appear wrong when the game is listening to a different device. For example, a connected controller can take priority over the keyboard, while a keyboard-and-mouse layout may not match the prompts shown for a controller. Select the device you are actually using, then test the radio again in a vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat a control check can tell you
- If the displayed binding is not Q, Q is no longer the correct PC shortcut for that setup.
- If the displayed binding is not left on the D-pad, use the button shown for the active controller scheme.
- If the radio action is present but the wheel does not open, test the press duration in a standard vehicle.
- If the control page itself shows a different input device, switch to the device you intend to use before testing.
Default instructions are a starting point, not a replacement for the Controls page. This is especially important after changing layouts or using a nonstandard input method.
Limit the GTA Online radio wheel to favorite stations
GTA Online added Radio Station Favorites in update 1.54, released with the Los Santos Tuners update on July 20, 2021. The option lets you mark stations as favorites so that only that chosen subset appears on the radio wheel. It changes the wheel’s contents; it does not replace the normal tap-to-cycle and hold-to-open controls.
Open the Interaction Menu
Use the platform’s default Interaction Menu input:
- PC: hold M.
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: hold the Touchpad.
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: hold the View button.
These are the default menu-opening inputs. If you remapped the Interaction Menu, use the binding shown by your controls instead.

Set the station favorites
- Open the Interaction Menu with the appropriate input for your platform.
- Find the option named Radio Station Favorites.
- Mark the stations you want available on the wheel and remove any you do not want.
- Close the menu, enter a vehicle, and hold the radio input to confirm that the wheel now shows the selected subset.
Online menu sections can be reorganized by later updates, so use the option’s name rather than relying on a fixed submenu position. Rockstar’s later update notes still refer to Station Favorites; a 2024 fix addressed a radio-wheel display problem that could occur when passengers used the feature.

Favorites versus ordinary station switching
Favorites do not create new stations, change the music in a station, or alter the control binding. They filter the stations presented by the Online radio wheel. If you remove a station from the favorite list, it should no longer be part of that selected subset, while the ordinary control remains tap to cycle and hold to open.
If the wheel still contains an unexpected station, close the Interaction Menu, reopen it, verify the marked list, and then open the wheel again from a vehicle. Menu labels and locations can move as Online is updated, so search for the exact Radio Station Favorites name.
Play your own music with Self Radio on PC
If “change the radio station” really means “play my own songs,” GTA 5 has a separate PC-only feature called Self Radio. It is not the same as switching among the game’s built-in stations, and the documented local-file workflow does not apply to PlayStation or Xbox.
Add supported files
- Prepare music files that are not protected by digital rights management.
- Use supported MP3, WMA, or M4A files.
- Place the files in
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. - Instead of copying files, you may place shortcuts in that folder that point to folders containing your music.
Only files that the game can access through that folder arrangement can be scanned. A shortcut pointing somewhere that is unavailable to the game will not provide playable tracks. The folder path is for the PC installation’s user files; it is not a console setting and is not entered into an in-game text box.
Scan and choose a Self Radio mode
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings > Audio.
- Use the Self Radio scan controls so the game detects the files in User Music.
- Select a Self Radio mode.
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Sequential | Plays tracks in sequence. |
| Shuffle | Randomizes the order of tracks. |
| Radio | Presents the music in a radio-style format, including the mode’s skipping behavior, advertisements, and DJ banter. |
After the scan, enter a vehicle and use the normal radio control to select Self Radio. The folder and Audio settings described here are for PC; consoles do not use this documented local-file setup.
Self Radio requirements and limits
- Files must be in a supported format: MP3, WMA, or M4A.
- DRM-protected tracks are not suitable for the documented workflow.
- Files must be placed in the User Music folder, or reached through valid shortcuts stored there.
- A scan is required before the game can use newly added files.
- Self Radio is a PC feature in this documented setup; do not look for the same local-folder process on PlayStation or Xbox.
Self Radio does not replace the game’s station controls. Once the files are scanned, you still select Self Radio by tapping or holding the normal radio input while in a vehicle.
Why the radio control may not work
Q or left on the D-pad does something else
The default may have been changed, or the game may be using another input method. Open Pause Menu > Settings > Controls, check the current scheme and binding, and test with the device shown by the prompts.
The Tool Desk

Make sure you are holding the input rather than tapping it. A tap is deliberately interpreted as “next station.” If a sustained press still only cycles stations, inspect the binding and try again in a normal vehicle rather than inside a property.

The station changes but the wheel selection is inaccurate
On PC, use the mouse or scroll wheel while the radio input remains held. On a controller, use the right stick, not the left stick or D-pad. Release the radio input only after the intended station is highlighted.
The game changes station before the wheel opens
This usually means the press was released too quickly or the active binding is not the one you expected. Hold the displayed radio input continuously, wait for the wheel, then move the selection control. If the behavior remains unchanged, verify the control scheme rather than repeatedly pressing the default key.
Controls fail inside a property
Rockstar’s February 2026 update notes document a fix for players who could not switch stations or turn off the radio inside properties. If you encounter that symptom, update the game, leave the property, and test the control in a vehicle. A property-specific failure does not necessarily mean the key or button is permanently broken.

Favorites do not match the wheel
Radio Station Favorites is an Online feature. Reopen the Interaction Menu and check the favorite list, then close and reopen the wheel from a vehicle. Because Online menus can change, look for the option by its exact name rather than assuming it remains in the same location. A passenger-related display issue was also addressed in a 2024 update, so updating the game is sensible when the wheel display is inconsistent.
Self Radio tracks are missing
- Confirm that the files are MP3, WMA, or M4A and are not DRM-protected.
- Check that the files or valid shortcuts are inside
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. - Run the Self Radio scan from Pause Menu > Settings > Audio.
- Remember that this feature is documented for PC, not console editions.
Nothing changes after an update
Updates can revise menu wording, alter which device is active, or fix context-specific radio problems. Recheck the Controls page, confirm the Interaction Menu input if you use Favorites, and test in a vehicle outside a property. Do not assume that a remembered key is still the active binding after remapping.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to remember for each platform
| Platform or mode | Fastest station change | Direct selection | Special option |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC keyboard and mouse | Tap Q | Hold Q, then use the mouse or scroll wheel | Self Radio with local files |
| PlayStation controller | Tap left on the D-pad | Hold left on the D-pad, then use the right stick | Online Station Favorites through the Interaction Menu |
| Xbox controller | Tap left on the D-pad | Hold left on the D-pad, then use the right stick | Online Station Favorites through the Interaction Menu |
These entries describe the commonly documented defaults. Your active control scheme takes precedence, so the in-game Controls page is the authoritative place to verify a remapped input.
A simple decision guide
- Want the next station? Tap the radio input once.
- Want a specific station? Hold the input, move the selection control, and release when it is highlighted.
- Using a PC and your own music? Configure Self Radio in the User Music folder and scan it under Settings > Audio.
- Playing GTA Online with a long station list? Use Radio Station Favorites in the Interaction Menu.
- Is the default input failing? Check Pause Menu > Settings > Controls, then test in a normal vehicle.
No accessory, subscription, or separate music product is required for the ordinary station-change command. It is a built-in vehicle control; Self Radio only adds the separate PC file setup described above.
