On your PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving to change how long the console waits before entering Rest Mode and which functions remain available while it rests. These are separate settings: adjust the timer to control when Rest Mode starts, then choose features such as USB power or internet connectivity to balance convenience with standby power use.

For example, you can let the console enter Rest Mode automatically but keep it connected to the internet for downloads, or disable features you do not need to reduce standby consumption. You do not need to buy anything to change these settings. If you want to charge a controller while the PS5 rests, use a compatible controller and USB cable.

Change when your PS5 enters Rest Mode

From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. The console provides separate inactivity timing behavior for media playback and other modes, so choose the period that fits how you use it. Sony’s power-saving guidance notes that selecting “Don’t Put in Rest Mode” leaves the console on and uses more power.

The timer controls automatic entry into Rest Mode; it does not determine which functions remain available once the console is resting. After setting the timer, use Features Available in Rest Mode to decide whether the PS5 can supply power to USB ports or stay connected to the internet. You can configure the two areas independently: a short inactivity timer can coexist with internet connectivity, for instance, or you can allow automatic Rest Mode entry while turning off USB power.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Sony’s environmental guidance lists defaults of four hours for media playback and, for other modes, 20 minutes in Europe or one hour in the rest of the world. These are Sony-published regional defaults, not a guarantee that every console currently uses those values: the page does not state a publication year, and settings or system software may change. Check the options shown on your own console.

Choose a timer or keep the console on

Choice What it does Trade-off
Automatic inactivity timing Enters Rest Mode after the selected period without activity; the timer behavior is set for media playback and other modes. Lets the console move into a lower-powered state without requiring you to remember to do it.
“Don’t Put in Rest Mode” Prevents automatic Rest Mode entry for the selected activity. Sony says the console stays on and consumes more power.

Consider the two timer categories separately. If you often leave a video or other media playing, the media-playback setting governs that situation; the other-modes setting covers other inactivity. Pick a period that gives you enough time to pause or step away without unintentionally leaving the console on for longer than you want. The exact choices and defaults can vary, so use the values displayed on your PS5 rather than assuming another console’s setup applies to yours.

“Don’t Put in Rest Mode” is an inactivity choice, not a way to configure a different low-power state. If you select it, Sony says the PS5 remains turned on and consumes more power. If your goal is to reduce use while you are away, choose an automatic period instead, or manually enter Rest Mode or turn the console off when finished.

Choose which features stay available in Rest Mode

Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on only the functions you need. The available switches may vary with console model and software, so use the labels displayed on your PS5. These switches affect what the console can do while resting; they do not replace the inactivity timer.

The practical choice is between convenience and lower standby consumption. USB power can keep a compatible accessory charging, while an internet connection can support downloads and updates and is part of the Remote Play wake setup. If you do not need a function, leave its switch off. Sony says the more Rest Mode features you enable, the more power the PS5 consumes in Rest Mode.

Supply Power to USB Ports

Enable Supply Power to USB Ports if you want a compatible connected accessory, such as a DualSense controller, to charge while the console rests. Connect the controller using its USB cable. Sony’s controller and accessory charging instructions list Always and 3 Hours options; the charging guide says Adaptive is available on CFI-2000 model group consoles. Sony’s general power-saving page describes Adaptive as available for CFI-2000/7000 model groups, so model coverage is not expressed identically across the pages. Do not assume Adaptive will appear on every PS5—select from the options actually shown on your console.

The choice is about how long USB ports receive power in Rest Mode. Choose Always if you want USB power to remain available throughout Rest Mode, or 3 Hours if that duration fits your charging needs. If your console offers Adaptive, it is another option for supported models. Sony’s pages do not describe identical model coverage for Adaptive, so the setting visible on your console is the practical guide; do not assume that a feature listed for one model group is available on every PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use the setting, enable USB power, connect the compatible controller with its USB cable, and then put the PS5 into Rest Mode. Sony says to use the included cable in its charging instructions. If a controller is not connected by USB, this particular USB power setting does not provide the wired charging setup described in Sony’s guide. A new controller or cable is not required just to change power settings; only consider replacing a cable if your existing one is missing or damaged.

Stay Connected to the Internet

Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet if you want the console to be able to download games and updates while resting. Sony says downloads of games bought through the PlayStation App and pre-ordered games are available while the console is connected to the internet in Rest Mode. Automatic updates can also be configured; see Sony’s instructions for automatic downloads and updates for those separate settings.

This Rest Mode switch allows the network connection to remain available; it is not itself a complete configuration for every download or update behavior. Sony describes automatic downloads and updates as settings that can also be configured. If you want this convenience, turn on the Rest Mode internet option and review the automatic-download and update settings separately. If background access is not useful to you, you can leave the internet option off.

There is a trade-off: keeping internet access available can support downloads and updates during downtime, but it is one more feature enabled in Rest Mode. Sony’s general power-saving advice is that enabling more features raises Rest Mode power use. Choose it based on whether unattended downloading or connectivity is worth that additional standby function for you.

Use Remote Play while the console rests

Internet connectivity alone is not enough to wake the PS5 for Remote Play. In addition to Stay Connected to the Internet, enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the Rest Mode options and enable Remote Play in the console’s Remote Play settings. Sony’s Remote Play setup guidance identifies these requirements.

Check all three parts when setting up this use: the PS5 must stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode, network wake must be enabled, and Remote Play must be enabled in its own settings. These are distinct controls. Turning on only the internet option does not provide the network-wake permission described by Sony, and enabling network wake does not take the place of enabling Remote Play. If you do not intend to use Remote Play, you do not need to turn on these extra options for that purpose.

Balance convenience with standby power use

Sony describes three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode, and off. Rest Mode is a lower-powered state, but keeping functions available affects how much power the console uses in that state. Sony says that when any Rest Mode feature is enabled, the console does not automatically lower consumption below 0.5 W on entering Rest Mode; this is a threshold statement, not a claim that the console consumes exactly 0.5 W in every configuration. Sony also says that enabling more features increases Rest Mode power consumption. These statements are from its power-saving guidance, which does not provide a measured consumption figure for each feature combination.

The 0.5 W figure should not be treated as the measured draw of a particular PS5 setup, nor as a forecast of a household electricity bill. Sony’s statement concerns automatic lowering on entry to Rest Mode when features are enabled. The amount used can depend on the active configuration, and the guidance does not give a figure for each combination of USB power, internet access, or other functions. There is no supported calculation here for a specific monthly cost or savings amount.

If minimizing standby use matters more than charging or background connectivity, disable unneeded Rest Mode features, or turn the console off when you are finished. There is no basis here for estimating a particular household’s bill or promising a specific amount of savings. You can make a practical adjustment without trying to optimize every switch: decide whether you need USB charging, downloads or updates, and Remote Play wake, then turn on only the corresponding functions.

Priority Settings to consider What to keep in mind
Automatic low-power transition Set an inactivity period rather than “Don’t Put in Rest Mode.” Sony says the console stays on and consumes more power when automatic Rest Mode entry is disabled.
Controller charging Enable USB power and choose an available duration. USB power is a Rest Mode feature and contributes to the convenience-versus-power trade-off.
Background downloads or updates Enable internet connectivity and configure automatic behavior as needed. Internet connectivity is needed for the downloads Sony describes while resting.
Remote Play wake Enable internet connectivity, network wake, and Remote Play. All three settings have distinct roles in the setup.
Lowest standby use among these options Disable features you do not need; turn the PS5 off when appropriate. Sony does not provide a specific household saving or universal wattage for every setup.

Enter Rest Mode or turn the PS5 off safely

  • Enter Rest Mode: Press the PS button to open Control Center, select Power > Enter Rest Mode, or press the console’s power button once.
  • Turn off fully: Open Control Center, select Power > Turn Off PS5.

Rest Mode and a full shutdown are different choices. Rest Mode leaves enabled functions available, such as USB power or internet connectivity, while turning off the console ends that resting state. If you do not need charging, downloads, or Remote Play wake during downtime, full shutdown is an alternative to keeping the PS5 in Rest Mode.

Before disconnecting the AC power cord, wait until the console’s power indicator is completely off. Sony warns that removing power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, data corruption, or damage. This is important whether you are changing your routine to use Rest Mode more often or choosing to turn the console off. Do not pull the AC cord merely because the screen is off; wait for the indicator to go dark. See Sony’s power-state and shutdown guidance if you need more detail.

Which settings should you use?

  • For overnight controller charging: Enable USB power, connect the controller with its USB cable, and choose an available duration that suits you.
  • For downloads or updates during downtime: Enable internet connectivity in Rest Mode and configure automatic downloads or updates as needed.
  • For Remote Play access: Enable internet connectivity, network wake, and Remote Play; all three settings are needed for this use.
  • For lower standby consumption: Disable features you do not need, and choose full shutdown instead of Rest Mode when keeping the console reachable or charging accessories is unnecessary.

A good starting point is to configure the timer first, then turn on only the functions that serve a clear purpose. If your PS5 is often left unattended, automatic Rest Mode entry avoids relying on memory. Add USB power for wired controller charging, internet connectivity for background downloads or updates, and the network-wake and Remote Play settings only if you use Remote Play. Revisit the menu if your needs change or if your console presents different options after a software update.

How do I keep my PS5 from going into Rest Mode automatically?

Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode and select “Don’t Put in Rest Mode” for the relevant activity. Sony says the console stays on and consumes more power with this choice.

Can my PS5 download games in Rest Mode?

Yes, if the console stays connected to the internet in Rest Mode. Sony says downloads of games bought through PlayStation App and pre-ordered games are available while connected. Automatic downloads and updates can also be configured separately.

How do I charge my controller in Rest Mode?

Enable Supply Power to USB Ports, connect a compatible controller with its USB cable, and select an available option. Sony lists Always and 3 Hours; Adaptive is available on supported model groups, so check the options shown on your console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Remote Play when my PS5 is in Rest Mode?

Yes, but internet connectivity alone is not enough. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet, Enable Turning on PS5 from Network, and Remote Play in the console’s Remote Play settings.

Does Rest Mode use more power if I enable more features?

Sony says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases power use. It also states that with any Rest Mode feature enabled, the console does not automatically lower consumption below 0.5 W on entry; that is not a claim of an exact draw for every setup.

Is “Don’t Put in Rest Mode” the same as turning off the PS5?

No. That timer choice prevents automatic entry into Rest Mode and leaves the console on, which Sony says consumes more power. To shut down, open Control Center, choose Power, then Turn Off PS5.

When is it safe to unplug the PS5?

After turning it off, wait until the console’s power indicator is completely off before disconnecting the AC power cord. Sony warns that removing power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, corruption, or damage.
