Start by checking your Fire tablet’s generation and Fire OS version: Amazon uses different labels and menu routes across models. Swipe down from the top, tap the gear to open Settings, and use Settings search when a named option is missing. Fire tablets do not have one master switch for all data collection or advertising. Device controls, third-party apps, Amazon services, and each user profile can have separate privacy settings.
Check the tablet model and software before changing anything
Amazon’s support pages are not written for one universal Fire interface. A route shown on a newer tablet may be named differently, or may be absent, on an older model. Open Settings from the gear in Quick Settings, then look for Device Options, About Fire Tablet, or a software-update page to identify the generation and Fire OS version. If a route below is not visible, use the Settings search field, consult Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help index, and search for the exact setting name.
The instructions and limitations in this guide come from Amazon’s US support documentation. Labels, availability, and account options can differ by country, model, Fire OS release, and whether the tablet is using an adult or Child Profile.

| Control | Where Amazon documents it | Scope and effect | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device Usage Data | Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Usage Data | Opts out of processing device-usage data for marketing and product-improvement purposes. | It may not stop processing needed for syncing, backups, device features, or Special Offers. It does not govern every interest-based advertising signal or data used by Amazon services such as Prime Video. |
| Collect App Usage Data | Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data | Controls reporting about third-party apps being opened, closed, and used for a period of time. | It is not an app-permission switch and does not control data collected inside an app or by an Amazon service. |
| Interest-based Ads | Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID or Settings > Security & Privacy > Advertising ID | Asks apps that use the tablet’s Advertising ID not to use it to build profiles or deliver interest-based ads. You can also reset the ID. | It does not remove every advertisement, account-based targeting, or lock-screen Special Offers. |
| Location-Based Services | Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services | Can turn estimated location and related information off for the whole tablet or for individual apps. | An app or service can have additional location settings and privacy terms. |
| Alexa Hands-Free | Tablet settings on compatible models | Stops the tablet from waiting for the hands-free Alexa wake word. | It does not replace Alexa account privacy controls or the settings of other voice-enabled apps. |
| Parental controls and profiles | Adult-profile settings or a separate Child Profile | Restricts selected content, purchases, communications, connectivity, camera, and location features. | Amazon warns that parental controls do not remove all mature or adult-rated material from apps, books, music, or Store search. |
Amazon says these privacy preferences are configurable for each profile and each device. A change made on one tablet or profile should therefore be checked anywhere else the account is used.
Turn off device and third-party app usage reporting
Device Usage Data
- Open Settings.
- Choose Security & Privacy.
- Tap Device Usage Data and switch it off.
Amazon describes this opt-out as covering processing for marketing and product-improvement purposes. It is not a promise that the tablet stops all operational processing: Amazon specifically distinguishes required functions such as syncing and backups, and it says the setting does not necessarily reduce marketing offers. It also does not control data collected for interest-based ads or information handled inside individual Amazon services. See Amazon’s Privacy Settings FAQs for Fire TV Products, Fire Tablets and Kindle E-readers for the documented scope.
Collect App Usage Data
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & Games.
- Choose Collect App Usage Data and turn it off.
This setting concerns third-party app activity such as when an app opens, closes, or remains in use. It does not revoke the app’s access to contacts, files, camera, microphone, or location, and it cannot override an app’s own privacy policy. Review those controls inside the app as well.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Limit interest-based advertising and Advertising ID use
Amazon documents two menu locations for the same control, which is a useful sign that Fire OS versions differ:
- Try Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads.
- If that route is absent, try Settings > Security & Privacy > Advertising ID.
- Turn Interest-based Ads off. On the Advertising ID page, tap Reset if you want the tablet to generate a new Advertising ID.
Amazon’s Limit Interest-Based Ads in Apps page explains that the opt-out is directed at apps using the device Advertising ID. It does not block every ad, stop targeting based on an account or activity held by a service, or remove lock-screen Special Offers.
Remove lock-screen Special Offers
Special Offers are a separate, paid account option. Amazon’s documented flow is:
- Open Manage Your Devices in your Amazon account.
- Choose Devices and select the Fire tablet.
- Open Special Offers and choose Remove offers.
- Review the one-time payment shown in your account flow and confirm if you want to proceed.
Amazon does not state a universal price on the support page, so the amount shown to you is the authoritative one for your account and region. See Remove Ads from Your Kindle E-Reader or Fire Tablet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn off location for the whole tablet or one app
- Open Settings.
- Choose Wireless.
- Tap Location-Based Services.
- Use the device-wide switch, or select an individual app if your Fire OS version lists app-level controls.
Amazon describes this information as an estimated location and related data used by maps, other apps, and Amazon. Turning off the device service can make navigation, local results, weather, delivery estimates, or other location features less useful. An app may also maintain its own location permission or account setting, so open the app’s privacy screen and read its provider’s privacy notice. Amazon’s documented scope is in the Privacy Settings FAQs.

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
When an app still appears to know your location
- Check that the tablet-wide Location-Based Services switch is off or that the specific app is disabled.
- Look for a second location choice inside the app or its account page.
- Remember that an IP address, saved address, Wi-Fi information, or account history can provide approximate location without the tablet’s location sensor.
- Recheck every profile that uses the tablet; profile preferences are not a single account-wide switch.
Clear an app’s cache or stored data
Amazon’s cache and data procedure applies to Fire tablets 8th generation and newer. Clearing a cache removes temporary files. Clearing data or storage is more disruptive: it can remove locally stored app state, downloads, sign-in information, and unsynchronized settings. Amazon lists the controls but does not define the data-loss behavior for every app, so verify the app’s sync or backup status before using Clear Data or Clear Storage.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & Notifications.
- Choose Manage All Applications or See all apps, depending on the software label.
- Select the app.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear Cache for temporary files, or Clear Data/Clear Storage to reset the app’s local data.
After clearing a cache, reopen the app and test the problem that prompted the cleanup. If you clear storage, expect to configure the app again unless its data is restored from the app provider’s account. The complete Amazon procedure is in Clear App Cache and Data on Your Fire Tablet (8th Generation and Newer).
Cache versus data versus uninstall
| Action | Best use | Likely consequence | Version or app limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Cache | Remove temporary files when an app is slow, displays stale content, or reports a minor loading error. | Usually keeps the account and app settings; temporary files are rebuilt as needed. | Amazon’s documented route is for 8th-generation-and-newer tablets. |
| Clear Data/Clear Storage | Reset an app that remains broken after less disruptive steps. | May erase local downloads, sessions, preferences, and unsynced progress. Confirm backups first. | Exact data loss depends on the individual app. |
| Delete from Device | Remove a downloaded app you no longer need. | The app is removed from the tablet; account purchases can generally be downloaded again according to the app provider’s rules. | Amazon documents this route for Fire OS 7 and higher. Preinstalled apps cannot be removed this way. |
Uninstall a downloaded app
For tablets running Fire OS 7 or higher, Amazon’s documented removal route is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Games or Apps.
- Tap the menu and choose Library, then Downloaded.
- Find the app and open its three-dot menu.
- Tap Delete from Device and confirm.
This removes downloaded apps, not preinstalled system apps. If a built-in app cannot be deleted, organize it elsewhere on the Home screen or use the supported disable, notification, or content controls available on that model instead of expecting full removal. See Amazon’s Uninstall an App from Your Fire Tablet (FireOS 7 and higher).
Control recommendations and lock-screen content
Dismiss one Discover recommendation
Long-press the recommendation in the Discover row and choose Not Interested. This handles that item; it is not the same as turning off the entire recommendations area.
Remove the Recommendations section
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps and Notifications.
- Choose Amazon App Settings.
- Open Home Screens.
- Turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.
Filter mature lock-screen advertisements
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps and Notifications.
- Choose Amazon App Settings, then Special Offers.
- Open Content Filtering and select the filtering option you want.
This filters lock-screen advertising content. It is not a system-wide mature-content blocker. Amazon’s Remove Inappropriate Content from Your Fire Tablet page explains both recommendation controls and the limits of filtering.
Use profiles and parental controls safely
Privacy choices belong to the profile and device where they are set. If several people share a tablet, switch into each profile and review its settings. Amazon also provides account-side controls through Manage Your Content and Devices > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy for certain tablets, but availability varies.

Amazon’s explicit warning is: Turning on Parental Controls doesn’t remove Mature or Adult-rated content from the device.
The controls limit selected access; they do not scrub mature material from every app, book, music catalog, or Store search result. The full explanation appears in What are Parental Controls on Fire Tablet?
Children under 13
For a child under 13, Amazon directs caregivers to create a separate Child Profile rather than relying on the adult-profile controls. Amazon’s support guidance says: For children under 13, visit our page Create a Child Profile to learn how to make your Fire Tablet kid-friendly.
A Child Profile has its own content and usage settings, so configure it directly after switching into that profile.
Disable Alexa hands-free and review voice privacy
On compatible Fire tablets, open the tablet’s settings and turn off the Alexa Hands-Free Mode switch. Amazon’s Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet page is the authority for compatibility and current labels; the exact surrounding menu can vary by model.
When hands-free Alexa is enabled, Amazon says the tablet begins recording and sending a request after it detects the wake word. A blue light bar indicates when Alexa is recording and sending. You can say Delete what I just said
or Delete everything I said today
to remove recordings by voice. For a complete history review or additional deletion choices, use the Alexa app or the current Alexa Privacy controls rather than assuming the tablet switch changes account history. Alexa settings are separate from third-party voice-app settings.
Per-app permissions: what is known and what is not universal
App usage reporting, app data storage, and permissions are different controls. A tablet may let an app request camera, microphone, contacts, or location access, but the exact consumer menu for reviewing every permission is not identical across Fire OS releases. Amazon’s developer documentation says Fire OS 6 ran on the Fire HD 8 (2018) and supports runtime permission checks on API level 23 and higher, including revoking individual permissions: Fire OS 6 for Fire Tablets. That developer information should not be treated as a single current Settings path for every consumer tablet.
When an app offers a permission page, use the app’s own settings or privacy notice and grant only the access its feature needs. If the app does not expose a control, check the tablet’s Settings search for the permission name and consult the model-specific Fire Tablet Help page. Do not confuse turning off Collect App Usage Data with revoking a permission: the former concerns usage events, while the latter concerns access to a device capability or personal data.
Troubleshooting when a setting is missing or ineffective
The menu path does not exist
- Confirm the Fire OS version and generation; the cache instructions require 8th generation or newer, while the uninstall route requires Fire OS 7 or higher.
- Use Settings search for a distinctive term such as Advertising ID, Location-Based Services, or Device Usage Data.
- Check whether you are in the intended profile. A Child Profile and an adult profile do not expose identical controls.
- Use Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help index for the model-specific article.
Ads continue after interest-based ads are off
The Advertising ID switch only instructs participating apps not to use that identifier for interest-based ads. Account-based advertising, an app’s own data, and Special Offers are separate. Review the app’s privacy controls and, if you want to remove lock-screen Special Offers, use the paid account flow described earlier.
Recommended Free Tools
An app keeps its old behavior after a privacy change
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the tablet if the interface has not refreshed.
- Check the app’s own account and privacy settings; Amazon’s device switches cannot govern every service.
- For a malfunction rather than a privacy choice, clear the cache first. Reserve Clear Data/Clear Storage for cases where you have confirmed synchronization or backups.
- Recheck the setting after switching profiles or moving to another Fire tablet, because preferences do not automatically propagate to every device.
A mature item is still visible
Content Filtering affects lock-screen ads, and parental controls restrict selected categories; neither guarantees removal of all mature or adult-rated content from apps, books, music, or Store search. Use a Child Profile for children under 13 and configure each service’s own content restrictions.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy checkup order
- Identify the tablet generation, Fire OS version, and active profile.
- Turn off Device Usage Data if you do not want the documented marketing and product-improvement processing.
- Turn off Collect App Usage Data for third-party app open, close, and duration reporting.
- Review Advertising ID and Interest-based Ads, then reset the ID if desired.
- Set Location-Based Services for the device and individual apps, followed by each app’s own privacy review.
- Inspect installed apps, clear only the cache when possible, and uninstall downloaded apps you no longer need.
- Configure recommendations, Special Offers content filtering, and account-level Special Offers separately.
- Review every profile, create a Child Profile for a child under 13, and set adult-profile parental controls where appropriate.
- Disable Alexa Hands-Free Mode on compatible tablets and review Alexa’s account privacy controls.
