In Java Edition 1.20.5 and later, you can resize a player with the vanilla /attribute command. There is no Player Size option in the Minecraft settings menu. The command works only when cheats or server permissions allow command use.

Bedrock Edition does not include Java’s vanilla /attribute player-scaling command. Bedrock players need an add-on, behavior pack, Marketplace world, or another server-side modification.

Change your player size in Minecraft Java Edition

Use this command in chat:

/attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 2

The number is a size multiplier:

Value Result
0.5 Half normal size
1 Normal size
2 Twice normal size
3 Three times normal size

@s means the player running the command. For example, to become half-size:

/attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 0.5

Reset your size

Set the scale back to its default value:

/attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 1

If a large or tiny player is stuck in a wall, under a low ceiling, or in another awkward location, teleport them somewhere safe before resetting:

Replace PlayerName and the coordinates with the target player and a safe location in your world.

Resize another player

Use the player’s exact in-game name instead of @s:

/attribute PlayerName minecraft:scale base set 3

This makes that player three times normal size. You can also use a selector. To reset every online player:

/attribute @a minecraft:scale base set 1

Useful selectors include:

  • @s — the command executor
  • @p — the nearest player
  • @a — all players

Requirements and permission errors

The command requires permission to use commands.

  1. In a single-player world, open the pause menu and choose Open to LAN.
  2. Set Allow Cheats to On.
  3. Choose Start LAN World.
  4. Run the /attribute command in chat.

On a multiplayer server, you need the appropriate operator or command permission. A server administrator may also restrict command use even when you can join the server.

The server version matters. A newer Java client cannot add commands or attributes to an older server. The server itself must support the scale attribute, so check the server’s Minecraft version rather than only the version shown in your launcher.

Which scale attribute name should you use?

Java Edition 1.20.5 introduced the scale attribute under the name generic.scale. Current Java command references use:

/attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 2

If the command is rejected, check the identifiers available on that installation with command autocomplete. Type:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/attribute @s minecraft:

Then inspect the suggestions shown by the game. Some older guides still show:

/attribute @s minecraft:generic.scale base set 2

That form is version-dependent and may not be accepted by current Java releases. Do not assume that a command copied from an older tutorial matches the command set exposed by your server.

Use a command block for a size button or map mechanic

A command block can apply a size change when activated by a button, pressure plate, redstone circuit, or another command-block system.

  2. Attach a button or other redstone trigger.

@p targets the nearest player to the command block. If the command block is on a dedicated Java server, the server’s server.properties file must contain:

enable-command-block=true

Restart or reload the server after changing the property as required by the server setup. Command blocks do not bypass permissions: command execution must be allowed, and the server must have command blocks enabled.

Can you change player size in Bedrock Edition?

Not with a built-in vanilla player-scale command. This Java command is invalid in an unmodified Bedrock world:

/attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 2

Bedrock’s standard command set includes commands such as /effect, /execute, /function, and /help, but it does not provide Java’s /attribute command for resizing players.

To resize a Bedrock player, install content that specifically provides the feature, such as an add-on or behavior pack. The commands are then defined by that add-on and are not universal Minecraft commands. For example, the third-party Player Resizer add-on documents:

Those commands require that add-on’s installation and configuration. Its listed requirements include enabling Beta APIs and Creator Cameras. They will not work in a normal Bedrock world without the add-on.

Do not confuse UI scaling with player scaling

Bedrock’s UI Scaling setting changes the size of menus and HUD elements. It does not make the in-world player model larger or smaller. Recent Bedrock UI-scaling changes affect interface behavior and scaling limits, not player-size control.

Common problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
Unknown or incomplete command You are on Bedrock, or the server is too old Confirm the edition and the server version.
minecraft:generic.scale fails The guide uses an older or version-specific identifier Use autocomplete after /attribute @s minecraft:.
You cannot run the command Cheats are disabled or you lack server permission Enable cheats in single-player or ask an administrator for permission.
The player clips into blocks The new scale does not fit the current space Teleport to a safe, open location and reset to 1.
A command block does nothing Command blocks are disabled or the block is not receiving its required trigger Set enable-command-block=true on a dedicated Java server and check the redstone settings.

Limits and side effects

The scale attribute is not merely a skin or texture effect. Mojang added it to rescale living entities, so changing it can affect how a player fits through spaces and interacts with the world. Very large or very small values can produce collision, camera, movement, or enclosure problems.

There is no need to treat every entity as having the same limits. Mojang documents entity-specific restrictions, including a maximum three-times scale for Shulkers and no scaling for the Ender Dragon. Those restrictions do not establish a universal player limit.

Version history

Before Java Edition 1.20.5, vanilla Java did not have this scale attribute, so older advice that resizing required a mod was accurate for Java 1.20.4 and earlier. Java 1.20.5 introduced the attribute. For current releases, begin with minecraft:scale and use in-game autocomplete if the installed server exposes a different identifier.

FAQ

Is there a Player Size setting in Minecraft?

No. Vanilla Minecraft does not provide a settings-menu slider for player size. In Java Edition 1.20.5 and later, use the /attribute command instead.

What command makes a Java player twice as big?

Use /attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 2 with cheats enabled or the required server permission.

What is the normal player scale?

The default scale is 1. Reset a player with /attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Java size command work in Bedrock?

No. Bedrock does not include Java’s vanilla /attribute player-scaling command. You need an add-on, behavior pack, Marketplace content, or another supported modification.

Why does minecraft:generic.scale not work?

The identifier is version-dependent. It was used in documentation when the attribute was introduced, while current Java command references use minecraft:scale. Type /attribute @s minecraft: and choose the identifier suggested by your game or server.

Can I resize every player at once?

Yes. With the required permission, run /attribute @a minecraft:scale base set 1 to reset all online players. Replace 1 with another value to apply that scale to everyone.

The Bottom Line

For Java Edition 1.20.5 or newer, run /attribute @s minecraft:scale base set 2 to become twice normal size and use base set 1 to return to normal. Cheats, operator permission, or equivalent command access is required. Bedrock has no equivalent vanilla command; use an appropriately configured add-on or behavior pack instead.
