The correct way to change a player’s permissions depends on the Minecraft edition and how the game is hosted. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, an administrator can use /op <playername>, /deop <playername>, /permission list, and /permission reload from the console or another administrator command interface. In a Bedrock world or Realm, the owner or an authorized operator changes a player’s role in the player controls. Java servers do not have one universal rank-management screen, so their exact procedure depends on the server software and installed permissions plugins.
Choose the workflow that matches your server
Before entering a command, identify both the edition and the hosting mode. A Bedrock world, a Bedrock Realm, a Bedrock Dedicated Server, and a Java server expose different controls. Using a command from the wrong environment can produce an unknown-command error or change nothing.

In multiplayer, command use is permission-gated. Minecraft’s official guide states: “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.” If you are a player on somebody else’s server, ask the owner or administrator; you cannot grant yourself a higher role from ordinary chat.
Check these prerequisites before changing anyone
- Confirm the edition. Bedrock and Java are separate server ecosystems. A Bedrock command reference does not establish a Java workflow.
- Confirm the hosting mode. A Realm or shared world uses player controls, while a Dedicated Server gives administrators a console and a server-side permissions file.
- Use an authorized account. The account running a multiplayer command needs a sufficiently high permission level. Owners of a server or Realm have permissions by default, according to Minecraft’s official guide.
- Record the exact player name. Enter the name exactly as the server displays it. A typo changes nobody’s permissions and can make a valid command look broken.
- Decide how much access is needed. Operator status is broad. If the server’s permission system supports narrower entries, prefer the smallest access that solves the problem.
- Know where the command will run. A command typed into in-game chat, the Dedicated Server console, and a host’s web console may use different prompts or slash conventions. Follow the interface’s command format while retaining the command names shown below.
Bedrock Dedicated Server: grant or remove operator status
Use this procedure when the world runs on a Bedrock Dedicated Server and you have console or administrator command access. The commands affect the server, not just the session of the person issuing them.

Grant operator status with /op
- Open the Bedrock Dedicated Server console or an administrator command interface.
- Enter
/op <playername>, replacing<playername>with the target player’s exact name. - Submit the command and have the player reconnect or try a command that their new role should allow.
Microsoft’s command reference describes /op as granting operator status and lists Admin as the required permission level. Operator status is a high-level role, so give it only to people who should be trusted with administrative commands.
Remove operator status with /deop
- Open the same server console or administrator interface.
- Enter
/deop <playername>. - Confirm the player can no longer use operator-only commands.
/deop revokes operator status; it does not delete the player or remove them from the world. If the player still appears to have access, check whether another permission entry or server-side system is granting it.

View the current permission entries
Run /permission list on the Bedrock Dedicated Server. This lists the permissions currently known to the server and is useful when you need to verify whether an account appears in the server’s permission data before or after an edit.
Reload a permissions-file edit
A Dedicated Server administrator may need to edit the permissions file outside the game. The safe sequence is:

- Open the server’s documented permissions file in the server installation or management panel.
- Make the intended change using the file format required by that server build and management setup. Do not guess a format from another edition or a different server product.
- Save the file, preserving the player name and every required field.
- Return to the Dedicated Server console or administrator command interface.
- Run
/permission reload. - Run
/permission listand test with an account whose intended access is known.
Microsoft documents /permission as a Dedicated Server command with list, set, and reload actions, and describes reload as: “Reloads and applies permissions. This command is for use on a dedicated server only.” The reload action is the step that tells the running server to read and apply the saved file; changing the file alone does not guarantee that the current process has noticed it.
When to use the set action
The /permission set action is available in the Dedicated Server permission command family, but the exact argument syntax depends on the command reference for the server version and configuration. Use the syntax documented for your installation rather than copying a format from an unrelated guide. If you only need standard operator status, /op and /deop are the clearer commands.
Bedrock worlds and Realms: change a player’s role in the controls
For a Bedrock multiplayer world or Realm, the owner or an authorized operator changes roles from the player controls instead of editing a Dedicated Server file. The exact visual arrangement can vary by platform and release, but the workflow is consistent: open the multiplayer player list, select the player, and choose the available permission or role control.
Understand the three common Bedrock roles
- Visitor: A restricted role intended for players who should observe rather than freely change the world. Interaction and building are limited.
- Member: The normal play role for someone who should participate in the world without administrative command access.
- Operator: The elevated role for a trusted player who needs command access and other administrative abilities allowed by the world.
The role determines available actions; it is not merely a label. Give a visitor-to-member promotion when someone needs to build or interact, and reserve operator for people who genuinely need administrative control.

Promote or demote a player
- Join the Bedrock world or Realm with the owner or another account that has authority to manage players.
- Open the in-game pause or multiplayer screen and display the player list.
- Select the player whose role must change.
- Choose the role or permission control offered for that player, then select visitor, member, or operator as appropriate.
- Have the player rejoin if the new abilities are not immediately visible.
- Test one intended action rather than handing out broader access than necessary.
If the role control is missing, the account you are using is probably not the owner or does not have a sufficiently high permission level. Minecraft’s official guide says that owners of a server or Realm should have permissions by default; another participant must be granted enough authority before they can manage somebody else.
Bedrock single-player worlds and the Allow Cheats setting
Single-player Bedrock worlds use a world setting rather than a server administrator. Open the world’s settings and enable Allow Cheats (the official guide also refers to this as allowing commands). The guide states that if commands were not enabled when the world was created, they can be turned on later from the World Options screen.

Decide whether command access is worth that trade-off before changing the setting. In a multiplayer world, use the owner or administrator role controls instead of enabling cheats merely to promote another player.
Java Edition: why the exact steps vary
The available official material establishes that Java multiplayer command use is permission-gated, but it does not define one universal Java rank-management interface. Java servers can expose different controls through their server software, hosting panel, or installed permissions plugins. A procedure that is correct for one implementation may be unavailable or unsafe on another.

Use the server’s documented control surface
- Identify whether the server is a vanilla Java server, a modded server, or a server using a permissions plugin.
- Open the console or administrator panel documented by that implementation.
- Read the permission or operator-management syntax for the installed server version and plugin set.
- Change only the target player’s rank or node, then verify the result with a test account or a narrowly scoped command.
- Document the change so another administrator knows which system owns the permission.
Do not assume that a Bedrock Dedicated Server command such as /permission reload exists on Java, or that a Java plugin’s rank names have any meaning on Bedrock. If a Java command is rejected, consult the documentation for the exact server software and permissions plugin rather than repeatedly trying commands from a different edition.
Operator status versus narrower permissions
Operator status is convenient because it grants a broad set of command abilities, but broad access increases the impact of mistakes and account compromise. A member role is usually the right choice for ordinary players. Promote to operator only when the person must administer the world, moderate players, or run commands unavailable to members.
On a Dedicated Server with a granular permission system, use a narrower entry when the task calls for one capability rather than full operator access. For example, a moderator may need a limited moderation action but not the ability to alter every world setting. The exact granular names and syntax are implementation-specific, so use the permission reference for that server and confirm the result with an account designed for testing.

“You do not have permission” appears
The account issuing the command does not have a high enough permission level, or the server’s permission data has not granted the required role. Ask the owner or a sufficiently privileged administrator to perform the change. On a Realm or shared world, return to the player controls while signed in as the owner or authorized operator.

The command is unknown
Check the hosting mode first. /permission is documented for a Bedrock Dedicated Server only; it is not a general command for every Bedrock world, Realm, or Java server. A player-management screen is the appropriate control surface for a Bedrock world or Realm.

The player cannot be found
Re-enter the player’s exact in-game name as shown by the server. Check for spelling, punctuation, and accidental spaces. If the player is offline, confirm that the server’s implementation supports changing an offline account and follow its documented name or identity rules.
A file edit had no effect
Confirm that the file was saved in the location used by this server, then run /permission reload from the Bedrock Dedicated Server console. Use /permission list to see whether the running server now reflects the intended entry. If it does not, restore the last known-good copy, inspect the server’s documented file format, and correct the entry before reloading again.
The player still has access after /deop
Check whether the account has been granted access through another permission entry, a plugin, or a separate administrative system. A single role change may not override a second system that is still assigning elevated abilities.
Achievements stopped unlocking
This is the expected consequence of enabling Allow Cheats in a Bedrock world. Turning the setting off later does not restore achievement eligibility for that world. If achievements matter, do not enable cheats simply to manage permissions.

- Use least privilege. Give member status for normal play and operator status only to trusted administrators.
- Prefer the console for server-wide changes. It gives administrators a clear record of what was entered and avoids asking a player to run an elevated command in public chat.
- Keep a reversible copy before editing a permissions file. This is a practical safeguard, not a substitute for the server’s documented format or reload command.
- Test with an account whose intended access is known. Verify the one action the player needs before granting broader privileges.
- Record who changed what and why. A short administrator log makes later troubleshooting much faster.
- Recheck after server changes. Updates to server software, hosting panels, or permissions plugins can alter the available control surface, especially on Java.

What to remember
Start by identifying the edition and hosting mode. For a Bedrock Dedicated Server, use /op and /deop for operator status, /permission list to inspect entries, and /permission reload after editing the permissions file. For a Bedrock world or Realm, use the owner’s player controls to assign visitor, member, or operator. For Java, follow the exact server and plugin documentation because no single permissions interface covers every installation. Only an owner or sufficiently privileged administrator can make multiplayer changes, and enabling Allow Cheats in a Bedrock world permanently removes that world’s achievement eligibility.
