“Greeting sound” can mean two different things on an iPhone. To change what callers hear when you do not answer, open the Phone app and edit the voicemail greeting. In the Unified Phone layout, go to Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting; in the Classic layout, go to Voicemail > Greeting. Choose Custom to record a new message or Default to return to the standard greeting when that option is available.
If you mean the sound your iPhone plays when a new voicemail arrives, use Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail. That alert is separate from the greeting callers hear. Apple says voicemail and custom-greeting features depend on carrier, country and region support, so missing controls may require carrier assistance.
First, identify which “greeting sound” you want to change
People commonly use “voicemail sound” for two unrelated settings. The caller-facing greeting is a recording stored with your voicemail service. It plays to callers before they leave a message. The New Voicemail sound is an alert generated by the iPhone after a message arrives. Changing one does not change the other.
| What you hear or change | Where to change it | What the setting affects |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting played to callers | Phone app: Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting (Unified layout), or Voicemail > Greeting (Classic layout) | The spoken message callers hear when your line sends them to voicemail |
| Alert for a newly received voicemail | Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail | The notification tone on your iPhone; it does not alter the caller-facing recording |
| Voicemail service itself | Usually managed by your wireless carrier | Whether callers are sent to voicemail and whether a greeting is played at all |
Apple states that “Voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are available from select carriers in select countries or regions.” Custom greeting recording is likewise “not supported by all carriers or in all countries and regions.” Those qualifications explain why two iPhones with similar software can show different voicemail controls. See Apple’s Change your voicemail greeting and settings on iPhone and Set up Voicemail on iPhone.

The quickest way to choose the right setting is to ask who the sound is for: if a caller hears it before leaving a message, edit the greeting in Phone; if you hear it when a message arrives, change the alert in Settings. If you want callers not to reach voicemail at all, the question is about carrier service, not either sound control.
Change the greeting callers hear
Use the path that matches the layout shown in your Phone app. Apple currently documents both layouts; menu names can also vary with iOS version, carrier provisioning and region.
Unified Phone layout
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Calls.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose Edit Voicemail Greeting.
- Tap Custom.
- Tap Record, then speak your greeting after the recording prompt.
- Use the on-screen controls to stop, review and save the recording if those controls are shown.
After saving, call your own number from another phone, or have someone call you, and let the call reach voicemail. Confirm that the new message—not an older recording—is played.

- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Voicemail.
- Tap Greeting.
- Select Custom.
- Tap Record and speak your message.
- Stop, review and save it using the controls on the greeting screen.
If you do not see Greeting, look for the Unified path instead. The absence of one label does not necessarily mean the feature has been removed; Apple’s two documented layouts use different navigation.
Both routes lead to the greeting controls, but the labels are not interchangeable: Calls and Edit Voicemail Greeting belong to the Unified route, while Voicemail and Greeting are the Classic route. Follow the one that matches the tabs and controls visible in your app rather than trying to find a single universal menu path.
Once you select Custom, the key action is to record and complete the save flow shown on screen. If the screen offers review controls, listen before saving so you can check the recording. A completed change should be verified from a separate phone, because the test confirms what callers actually hear rather than just what the iPhone’s editor displays.
Record a clear, useful voicemail message
The recording screen supplies the controls, but the message itself determines what callers can do. Before tapping Record, decide whether the greeting should be personal, business-like or temporary.

- State your name or the purpose of the number so callers know they reached the right mailbox.
- Tell callers what action to take, such as leaving their name, number and reason for calling.
- If you will return calls only during certain hours, state that limitation rather than promising an immediate response.
- Move to a quiet room and keep the iPhone a consistent distance from your mouth. Avoid speakerphone or loud background audio.
- Speak at a normal pace, then review the recording before saving it. Re-record if words are clipped or hard to understand.
- Do not include sensitive information such as account numbers, passwords or access codes in a greeting that unknown callers can hear.
These are recording-quality practices, not additional iPhone settings. The important save step is the control shown on your greeting screen; if no save control appears, follow the screen’s completion prompt and verify by calling the line.
Return to the default greeting
To stop using your recording, open the same greeting screen and choose Default, if it is offered. Apple’s setup instructions describe choosing between Default and Custom. Default restores the standard greeting supplied by the voicemail system; it does not promise a silent mailbox and it does not cancel voicemail service.
After selecting Default, test from another phone. If callers still hear your custom message, the carrier’s voicemail platform may not have accepted the change, or the line may be using a carrier-specific greeting system. In that case, the carrier must check the mailbox and its provisioning.
“Default” is the choice for replacing your personal recording with the standard greeting option; it is not an off switch. If the reason for changing the greeting is that you do not want a personal recording played, select Default and verify the result with a test call. If the reason is that you do not want voicemail to answer calls, ask the carrier about disabling that service instead.
Can you turn off the greeting—or voicemail entirely?
There is no universal iPhone switch that makes a carrier voicemail mailbox answer without a greeting. Choosing Default only selects the standard greeting. It is different from disabling voicemail service, removing call forwarding to voicemail or closing the mailbox.
If your goal is that callers never reach voicemail, ask your wireless carrier whether it can disable voicemail or change the unanswered-call routing on your line. Carrier procedures and account rules differ. Apple’s iPhone controls cannot override a voicemail service that is hosted and controlled by the carrier. For a carrier-specific example, see Verizon’s instructions for Apple iPhone – Change Voicemail Greeting; other carriers may use different menus, short codes or account support channels.
Be precise when contacting support: explain whether you want the custom recording replaced, the standard greeting restored, or the voicemail service itself disabled. Those are different requests. Apple documents the iPhone controls for selecting a greeting, but service-level changes belong with the carrier that provides voicemail on your line. No single iPhone menu or carrier procedure applies to every account or region.

Change the alert sound for new voicemail
If by “greeting sound” you mean the tone that your own iPhone plays when a voicemail arrives, do not open the Phone app’s greeting editor. Instead:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap New Voicemail.
- Choose an alert sound.
This changes only the on-device notification. It does not change the spoken greeting, the caller’s ability to leave a message or the carrier’s voicemail settings. If you select a new tone and callers still hear an old greeting, you changed the notification setting rather than the greeting recording.
The two controls serve different audiences and happen at different times. The greeting is played to a caller before a message is left; the New Voicemail alert is heard by you when a message arrives. Changing the alert is useful when you want to change the sound your handset makes, but it cannot update what the voicemail service plays to callers.
Understand Live Voicemail before changing anything
Live Voicemail is a separate feature from the greeting editor. Apple describes it as showing a real-time transcription while a caller leaves a message and allowing you to answer during the message. Its availability varies by country, region and language.
Turning Live Voicemail on or off does not automatically replace the greeting stored by your carrier. Treat these as separate controls: edit the greeting in the Phone app, adjust the New Voicemail alert in Settings, and manage Live Voicemail through its own setting when it is available on your iPhone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Live Voicemail is relevant if you want to see what a caller is saying while a message is being left or answer during that message. It is not the setting to use to record a custom greeting, restore Default, or pick a notification tone. Apple also limits its availability by carrier, country or region and language, so it may not appear for every user.
What to do when the greeting controls are missing
Check the Phone layout first
Look for both documented paths: Phone > Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting and Phone > Voicemail > Greeting. One may be present while the other is not. If neither appears, continue with the service checks below.

Confirm that voicemail is supported on the line
Apple limits voicemail, Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail to select carriers and regions. Custom greeting recording is also carrier- and region-dependent. A missing Custom or Record button can therefore indicate that the carrier does not expose that capability, rather than a problem with your recording technique.
Check carrier provisioning
Contact the wireless carrier and ask it to verify that voicemail is active, correctly provisioned and associated with your current SIM or eSIM and number. Ask specifically whether custom greetings are supported for your plan and location. Carrier support is also the right route when you want voicemail disabled entirely.

Test after every change
Call the iPhone from a different number and allow the call to go unanswered. Listen to the entire greeting and leave a short test message. This distinguishes a saved greeting from a change that was made only on the handset but not accepted by the voicemail server.
When you contact the carrier, describe what you can see: for example, whether the Phone app has no greeting controls, whether Custom is present but Record is not, or whether a saved edit is not heard on a test call. Ask whether voicemail and custom greeting recording are supported for your carrier and location. The carrier is the practical contact for line-level availability and voicemail service changes.
When callers still hear the old greeting
- The wrong setting was changed: A new-voicemail alert selection affects only your iPhone. Reopen the Phone app’s greeting editor to change the caller-facing recording.
- The recording was not saved: Return to the greeting screen, select Custom and complete the Record and save flow shown there. Then test from another phone.
- The carrier controls the mailbox: Some carrier voicemail systems use their own greeting management. Ask the carrier to refresh or reset the greeting on the line.
- The line or region lacks support: If Custom or Record is absent, ask whether the feature is available for your country, region and account.
- A different number is being called: Verify that the test call reaches the same mobile number whose greeting you edited, especially if you recently moved a number, changed SIMs or use call forwarding.
Apple’s documented steps do not guarantee identical labels on every iPhone because carrier and regional availability varies. If the carrier confirms that the service is active but the greeting remains unchanged after a successful edit, provide the carrier with the test-call time and ask it to inspect the voicemail mailbox rather than repeatedly changing the alert tone.
It also helps to keep the troubleshooting question narrow. If the alert on your iPhone changed but the caller-facing message did not, go back to the greeting controls. If the greeting editor reports a completed change but a caller still hears the old version, the wireless carrier can check the mailbox. If you cannot find the greeting controls at all, first check the alternate Phone layout and then ask about carrier and regional support.
Choosing the right fix
| Your goal | Use this action | Do not use this action |
|---|---|---|
| Record a personal message for callers | Phone app greeting screen > Custom > Record | Changing New Voicemail in Settings |
| Stop using a personal recording | Greeting screen > Default, when available | Assuming Default disables voicemail service |
| Silence or remove voicemail service | Ask the wireless carrier about disabling voicemail or changing unanswered-call routing | Deleting the iPhone’s notification sound |
| Change the tone you hear for a new message | Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail | Editing the spoken greeting |
| See a transcription or answer during a message | Use Live Voicemail if it is offered for your language and region | Expecting Live Voicemail to replace the carrier greeting |
In short, use the Phone app when you want to change the words callers hear, Settings when you want to change the alert your iPhone plays, and your carrier when you want voicemail service or unanswered-call routing changed. The distinction matters because a successful change in one place does not update the other controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change my voicemail greeting on iPhone?
Open Phone and use the path shown by your layout: Unified is Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting; Classic is Voicemail > Greeting. Select Custom, record the message, complete the on-screen save flow, and test by calling from another phone.
How do I turn off my iPhone voicemail greeting?
To stop using a custom recording, choose Default on the greeting screen if that option is available. This restores the standard greeting; it does not turn off voicemail. To stop callers reaching voicemail, ask your wireless carrier whether it can disable the voicemail service or change unanswered-call routing.
How do I get back to the default voicemail greeting?
Open the same greeting controls used to record a custom message and choose Default, if offered. Apple describes Default and Custom as greeting choices. Test from another phone afterward; if your custom recording still plays, contact the carrier that manages the voicemail mailbox.

For the notification tone played by your iPhone when a message arrives, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail and choose an alert sound. This changes the handset alert only, not the greeting callers hear.
Why can’t I find the greeting or Custom option?
Check both Phone app paths because Unified and Classic layouts use different menus. If neither path or the Custom/Record option is available, voicemail and custom greetings may not be supported by your carrier or in your country or region. Ask your wireless carrier to check availability and service on your line.
Does Live Voicemail change the greeting callers hear?
No. Live Voicemail is a separate feature that can show a real-time transcription while a caller leaves a message and lets you answer during it. Its availability varies by country, region and language; it does not automatically replace the greeting stored by your carrier.
The Bottom Line
Use Phone to record a custom caller-facing greeting or select Default; use Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail to change the alert your iPhone plays. Default does not disable voicemail. For missing controls, an old greeting that persists, or voicemail service changes, contact your wireless carrier.
