To change a physical SIM in most Samsung Galaxy phones, power the phone off, eject the SIM tray through its own opening, seat the card in the tray’s shaped cutout, slide the tray back without forcing it, then power on. Tray position and SIM orientation vary by model, so use your exact Galaxy’s instructions rather than assuming a universal layout.
Before you start: check your Galaxy model
Samsung’s general procedure is similar across many Galaxy phones, but tray location, card orientation and even how the phone should be positioned can differ. Find the instructions for your exact model on Samsung’s SIM card support page and follow its device-specific diagram. The ejector opening is the hole in the SIM tray outline—not a microphone or speaker opening along the phone’s edge.
Samsung’s Fold and Flip directions illustrate why model-specific guidance matters: Fold7 instructions say to place the phone on a flat surface with the screen face up and camera side down, while Fold6 instructions specify screen face down and camera side up. Flip7 and Flip6 instructions say to keep the phone closed; Flip5 instructions say to open it to the main screen. The XCover6 Pro procedure is a separate exception: Samsung’s directions begin with removing the back cover and battery. Do not apply that procedure to other models.
How to remove and replace a physical SIM
- Power off the phone. Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions begin with the device switched off.
- Find the SIM tray and its eject hole. Identify the tray by its outline, then check your model’s instructions to locate the correct opening. Do not insert the pin into a microphone or speaker hole.
- Eject the tray. Insert the supplied SIM ejector tool straight into the tray hole and press until the tray pops out. Pull the tray out carefully.
- Remove the old SIM, if applicable. Lift it from the tray. If you are only removing a SIM, return the empty tray to the phone.
- Place the replacement SIM in the shaped cutout. Match the card’s shape to the tray and use your model’s diagram for the correct contact orientation. Check that the SIM lies level and flush.
- Return the tray to its slot. Slide it in carefully and stop if it does not go in smoothly. A backward SIM or a tray that is forced while misaligned can bend or break the tray.
- Power on and wait for recognition. Give the phone time to recognize the SIM. Samsung’s A57 setup guidance also recommends waiting after reinsertion.
Do not force a resistant tray or bend the card to make it fit. If it remains difficult to remove or insert, Samsung says service may be needed.

Do you need a SIM ejector tool?
Samsung intends the supplied ejector tool for this job. If you still have it, there is no need to buy another. Samsung says replacement ejectors may be available from carriers or electronics retailers; the tool is optional only in the sense that you may already have the right one. Whatever tool you use, insert it straight into the tray opening rather than an edge microphone or speaker hole.
If the phone does not detect the SIM
Start with the physical fit, then consider whether the issue could involve the card, device or carrier account. Samsung’s SIM-not-detected troubleshooting guidance recommends inserting the eject pin straight into the tray hole and pulling the tray completely out without bending or forcing it.

- Check that the SIM matches the tray cutout, sits flush and is fully seated.
- Remove and reinsert it carefully; do not force a misaligned tray.
- After reinsertion, wait for the phone to recognize the card.
- If a correctly seated SIM still is not detected, continue with Samsung’s troubleshooting steps. The cause cannot be determined from the symptom alone.
For the Galaxy S9+, Samsung’s user manual specifically cautions that a wet tray can damage the device and advises making sure the tray is dry and fully inserted to help prevent liquid from entering. This is a model-specific precaution in that manual, not a universal moisture instruction for every Galaxy phone.

When to contact your carrier
Changing a physical SIM does not guarantee that service will activate automatically. Samsung says the carrier may require additional activation steps, so check that your account is ready. If the phone requests an unlock code after you install a new SIM, Samsung directs you to the original carrier; a phone may need to be SIM-unlocked to work with a different carrier.

eSIM availability also depends in part on carrier support. If you are deciding between a physical SIM and eSIM, check whether your particular Galaxy model and carrier support the option you want. Contact the carrier about activation, unlocking or eSIM availability.
