Change the country/region on your Nintendo Account website profile—not in the Switch or Switch 2 System Settings. The eShop associated with that account updates to the selected country the next time the console connects. Before saving, clear any balance, automatic renewal, or pending downloadable preorder that is blocking the change, then add a payment method issued for the destination market.

What changing the Nintendo Account country actually does

Nintendo ties the Nintendo eShop country on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 to the Country/region of residence value on your Nintendo Account. The console does not have a separate eShop-region switch in System Settings. Once the account change is accepted, the corresponding eShop appears when the console next connects to the internet.

This is an account-profile change. It does not create a new Nintendo Account, and the official guidance reviewed does not say that changing country deletes the account. Account-level information such as purchase history, saved payment information, Nintendo Switch Online membership information, and balance is associated with that Nintendo Account. Country-specific purchasing rules can still affect whether a particular payment method, prepaid code, game, or downloadable add-on works after the move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the profile country also does not merge accounts or move ownership between users on the same console. If two people use separate Nintendo Accounts, each account keeps its own balance, purchases, and membership information. Decide which account actually owns the funds and software before you begin.

Check these blockers before changing country

Nintendo may refuse the change until the account is in a state the destination country can support. Check each item while the account is still set to its current country.

Spend or otherwise address the eShop balance

An unspent eShop balance is one of Nintendo’s listed reasons for a failed country change. Treat remaining funds as at risk: Nintendo’s official wording says, “Your Nintendo eShop account balance does not carry over when you change the country that your Nintendo Account is set to.” The exact rule depends on the Nintendo support region. Nintendo of America says the balance must be reduced to zero before changing country. Nintendo of Europe says a change may be offered after you accept that the remaining balance will be lost. Read the warning shown for your account rather than assuming that one region’s procedure applies globally.

Record the balance before you start, especially if the account is used on more than one console. A balance belongs to the Nintendo Account, not to an individual Switch user profile, and it is not shared with other Nintendo Accounts. If Nintendo requires a zero balance, use the funds under the current country before submitting the request; do not buy a replacement code expecting it to preserve the old balance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cancel automatic renewals

Cancel applicable automatic renewals before retrying. Nintendo specifically identifies Nintendo Switch Online, Pokémon HOME Premium, and in-game subscription renewals as possible blockers. Cancellation stops the next renewal; it does not necessarily end access immediately, so check the confirmation screen for the service’s stated end date.

Check every recurring service attached to the Nintendo Account, not only the subscription you remember purchasing. After cancellation, allow the account page to update, keep the confirmation details, and then submit the country change again.

Cancel an unavailable digital preorder

A pending preorder for downloadable content that is not yet available can prevent a country change. Nintendo’s instruction is to cancel that preorder, then return to the country setting and try again. Do not cancel unrelated completed purchases; use the account message to identify the unavailable preorder.

Check family and supervised-account status

In Nintendo of America’s instructions, supervised accounts for users under 18 cannot change their country individually. If a family-group administrator changes country, relevant supervised accounts are updated automatically. A move to the United States or to Quebec can also trigger a child-account confirmation process for the family administrator in circumstances described by Nintendo. Read every prompt before confirming because the administrator’s action can affect other accounts in the family group.

Step-by-step: change the eShop country on the Nintendo Account website

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account website. Use the account that owns the eShop balance and purchases you are evaluating. Changing another family member’s profile will not change this account’s eShop.
  2. Open User Information. This is the account-management area rather than the console’s System Settings.
  3. Edit the Profile section. Choose the edit control beside the profile information.
  4. Choose a value for Country/region of residence. Select the destination country from Nintendo’s current list. If you choose Canada, Nintendo’s instructions require a second selection in the Region field: Quebec or Not Quebec.
  5. Save the profile change. Nintendo displays country-change information and asks you to confirm agreement. Read the balance, family, and account notices on that screen before accepting.
  6. Resolve any displayed blocker. If Nintendo rejects the request, follow the specific message. Typical causes are a nonzero balance, an active automatic renewal, or an unavailable downloadable preorder. The exact labels and order of prompts can change, so use the current wording on the account page.
  7. Reconnect the console. On the next internet connection, the Switch or Switch 2 should load the eShop corresponding to the account’s new country. If the old storefront remains visible, close and reopen the eShop after confirming that the account profile saved.

The country setting is not changed by selecting a different console region, changing the system language, or moving the console to another country. Those actions do not replace the Nintendo Account profile value that controls the eShop.

Set up payment methods for the destination eShop

Why your current card may stop working

Nintendo states that a credit card issued in one region will not work in a different region’s eShop. Nintendo’s example is a U.S.-issued card failing outside the North American eShop. A card that worked before the move can therefore be rejected even when its account details are unchanged. Check the destination country’s Nintendo support page for accepted payment methods and issuing-country requirements.

Do not assume that a wallet, card network, billing address, or digital-payment service accepted in one market is accepted in every market. The country attached to the Nintendo Account and the market that issued the payment instrument both matter.

Japan-specific payment options

Nintendo’s Japan Switch eShop guidance lists credit card, PayPal, and Nintendo prepaid card as ways to add funds. Japan-market download and prepaid-card codes may require the Nintendo Account’s country to be set to Japan. Nintendo Japan states in its purchase instructions that download-card and prepaid-card numbers sold for Japan may not be redeemed unless the Nintendo Account’s country/region is Japan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are Japan-market rules, not a universal list for every country. Nintendo Japan’s eShop account-information screen provides access to balance and payment settings, including registering or changing card information and linking or unlinking PayPal. On the Japanese account website, the described web-based balance-addition route uses prepaid-card codes rather than credit card or PayPal. Use the destination market’s own current instructions for the exact menu and available methods.

Adding a prepaid card safely

  • Confirm which country sold the code.
  • Confirm that the Nintendo Account country matches the market required for redemption.
  • Only purchase a code after checking those two conditions; a prepaid card does not perform the region change itself.
  • Keep the receipt or code details until redemption succeeds.

A destination-market code can add funds only after the account is configured for the market that accepts it. Buying a code first and changing the account later can leave you with a code that cannot be redeemed under the current setting, so verify the order of operations in the destination country’s Nintendo instructions.

What happens to purchases, memberships, and balance

Balance and payment information

The account retains its account identity, but the balance does not transfer as spendable funds to the new country. The regional difference described above—zeroing the balance in Nintendo of America’s process versus possible forfeiture acceptance in Nintendo of Europe’s process—means you should follow the warning attached to your account before confirming. Saved payment information may also need to be replaced because a card issued for the former market may not be accepted by the new one.

Purchase history and Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo’s account support associates purchase history and Nintendo Switch Online membership information with the Nintendo Account. Changing the country is therefore different from deleting the account. However, an active membership or other recurring service can block the change until automatic renewal is canceled, so check the subscription status before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a record of important order information before changing country if you may need to contact support. The account remains the account that made the purchases, but payment eligibility and storefront availability can differ after the profile update.

Redownloading software and downloadable content

Nintendo Japan says that, from April 30, 2025, redownloading purchased software and additional content is handled through Virtual Game Cards in the HOME menu rather than through the eShop. The exact behavior can vary with system software and market. Nintendo’s published region-change material does not establish that every game and downloadable-content combination works across every country. If a title’s cross-region compatibility is the reason for your move, check Nintendo’s current help for that specific title and console before changing the account.

This Virtual Game Card guidance is a platform-specific instruction, not proof that a title bought in one country has identical DLC access in another. Verify the game’s own country and add-on requirements before relying on a redownload after the change.

Account ownership on a console

Nintendo Japan’s account-information guidance says a balance belongs to the Nintendo Account and is not shared between different users on the same Switch. Make sure you identify which account owns the balance and purchases before changing country or considering another account. Moving between user profiles on the console does not merge their funds or purchase histories.

Choose the approach that fits your account

There are three practical approaches: keep the current country, change the existing account, or use another account for a different market. The official material establishes the checks below; it does not provide a universal recommendation to maintain multiple accounts.

Question Keep the current country Change the existing account Use another account
Does the account have funds? No region-change action is needed. Resolve the balance warning first; funds do not carry to the new country. Funds and purchases remain associated with the account that owns them.
Are renewals or a pending preorder active? They remain under the current account settings. Cancel applicable renewals and an unavailable downloadable preorder before retrying. Check each account separately for blockers.
Is the payment instrument issued for the destination market? Continue using a method accepted by the current eShop. Verify that the new market accepts the card or other method; a card from the former region may fail. Verify the payment method for the account and market you intend to use.
Is this a supervised or family-group account? Existing family settings remain in place. The family administrator may need to act, and a United States or Quebec change can prompt child-account confirmation. Family-account permissions still apply to the account being used.
Which account owns purchases and balance? The current Nintendo Account remains the owner. The same Nintendo Account remains the owner after the profile change. Do not expect balances or purchase histories to merge between accounts.

Use the existing account when keeping its purchase history and membership information together is important and you can satisfy the balance, renewal, preorder, and payment requirements. Keeping the current setting avoids those transition steps. A separate account does not move the original account’s balance or purchases; it simply leaves ownership divided between accounts.

Troubleshooting a failed region change

“Unable to change” with a balance warning

Open the eShop balance information for the account and follow the rule shown for its region. Nintendo of America’s process requires a zero balance; Nintendo of Europe may allow the change after you accept forfeiture. If the warning does not clear after the balance is addressed, sign out and back in to the Nintendo Account website and retry from User Information.

The page says an automatic renewal is active

Review Nintendo Switch Online, Pokémon HOME Premium, and in-game subscriptions for the account. Cancel the applicable automatic renewal, wait for the account page to reflect the change, and submit the country update again. Keep the cancellation confirmation in case the warning persists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A preorder blocks the request

Find the downloadable-content preorder that is not yet available and cancel it as Nintendo instructs. A preorder for content that has already become available is a different state, so follow the message shown in the account rather than canceling unrelated purchases.

A supervised account cannot edit Country/region of residence

Have the family-group administrator review the country change. Nintendo’s Americas guidance does not allow an under-18 supervised account to change this setting independently. If the administrator proceeds, read the notice about automatic updates to supervised accounts and any child confirmation requested for a United States or Quebec destination.

The old eShop appears after saving

Verify that the website profile shows the new country, then connect the console to the internet, close the eShop, and open it again. The storefront change is tied to the account’s country and is expected on the next console connection; changing the console’s language or system region does not substitute for the account update.

The new card or code is rejected

Check the issuing market of the card or prepaid code and compare it with the Nintendo Account country. Nintendo documents region restrictions for credit cards and Japan-market prepaid codes. If the markets do not match, use a payment method the destination country’s Nintendo support page lists as accepted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The country list or labels look different

Nintendo can change the wording and order of profile prompts. Stay in User Information and follow the current labels for Country/region of residence, Region, confirmation, and any displayed blocker. Do not infer that a missing label means the console’s System Settings control the eShop; the account website remains the controlling location.

Questions to answer before you confirm

  • Have you recorded the current balance and understood whether your region requires spending it or accepting its loss?
  • Have you canceled every applicable automatic renewal?
  • Have you checked for an unavailable downloadable preorder?
  • Is the account supervised, or are you the family-group administrator?
  • Is your replacement card or prepaid code issued for the destination market?
  • Does a particular game or add-on depend on cross-country compatibility?
  • Do you know which Nintendo Account owns the purchases and funds you need?

Once those answers are clear, change the profile country on the Nintendo Account website, accept the account-specific notices, and reconnect the console. Payment settings can then be reviewed in the destination eShop using that market’s own instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the eShop region from my Switch’s System Settings?

No. Change Country/region of residence in the Nintendo Account website profile. The Switch or Switch 2 loads the matching eShop after it next connects.

Will my Nintendo eShop balance move to the new country?

No. Nintendo says the balance does not carry over. Nintendo of America requires a zero balance, while Nintendo of Europe may allow a change after you accept losing the remaining funds.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Nintendo blocking my country change?

Check for an unspent balance, an active automatic renewal such as Nintendo Switch Online or Pokémon HOME Premium, or an unavailable downloadable preorder. Supervised accounts may also require the family administrator to act.

Can I use my old credit card after changing country?

Not necessarily. Nintendo says a card issued in one region will not work in a different region’s eShop. Check the destination country’s accepted payment methods and issuing-market rules.

Do Japan Nintendo eShop cards work with every account?

Japan-market download and prepaid-card codes may require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. Confirm the code’s market and the account setting before buying or redeeming it.

Does changing country delete my games or Nintendo Account?

The cited Nintendo guidance does not say that changing country deletes the account. Purchase history and membership information remain associated with the Nintendo Account, but individual game and DLC compatibility can vary by market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a child or supervised account change its own country?

Nintendo of America says supervised accounts for users under 18 cannot change the country individually. The family-group administrator may need to change the country, which can update relevant supervised accounts automatically.

How do I get the new storefront to appear?

Confirm the country saved on the Nintendo Account website, connect the console to the internet, then close and reopen the eShop. The storefront follows the account country on the next connection.

The Bottom Line

Change the country in Nintendo Account User Information, not on the console. First resolve balance, renewal, preorder, and family-account blockers. Expect the old balance to be lost or require a zero balance, and use payment cards or codes issued for the destination market. Reconnect the Switch or Switch 2, then verify payment and title compatibility in the destination eShop.
