Microsoft Edge does not include a built-in option that replaces its New Tab page with Google.com. Its standard New Tab page remains Microsoft’s page, even if you change the default search engine to Google.
You have three practical choices:
- Make address-bar searches use Google.
- Make searches entered in Edge’s New Tab search box use Google while keeping the standard New Tab layout.
- Replace the entire New Tab page with Google by installing a New Tab extension.
Option 1: Set Google as Edge’s default search engine
This changes searches typed into the address bar. It does not replace the page displayed when you open a new tab with Ctrl+T.
- Open Edge’s menu by selecting Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open Search and connected experiences. In some Edge versions, this is called Search and connected services.
- Under Services, select Address bar and search.
- Open Search engine used in the address bar and select Google.
You can open the relevant settings page directly by entering this address in Edge:
edge://settings/searchAfter this change, a search such as weather tomorrow typed into the address bar will use Google. The built-in Edge New Tab page, however, will still appear when you open a tab.

Option 2: Use Google for searches from the New Tab search box
Edge can display its usual New Tab page but redirect searches entered in the large search field to the address bar. Because the address bar is now configured to use Google, those searches will use Google as well.
- Go to Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open Search and connected experiences or Search and connected services.
- Select Address bar and search.
- Find Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar.
- Choose Address bar.
Make sure Search engine used in the address bar is also set to Google. Otherwise, redirecting the New Tab search box to the address bar will simply use whichever search engine is currently selected there.
The search field may continue to look like Edge’s Bing-branded field. That is a visual limitation of the built-in New Tab page. The important difference is where the query is sent: selecting Address bar sends it through the address-bar search engine, which in this setup is Google.

Option 3: Replace the entire New Tab page with Google
If you want every new tab to show Google’s actual webpage rather than Edge’s layout, install a New Tab extension from Microsoft Edge Add-ons. Edge does not provide this replacement as a normal built-in setting.

Install a New Google Tab extension
- Open the Microsoft Edge Add-ons website and find the New Google Tab extension.
- Select Get.
- Confirm by selecting Add Extension.
- Open a new tab to test the result.
If Edge installs the extension but leaves it disabled, enter this address in the address bar:
edge://extensionsFind New Google Tab and turn on its toggle.
Edge may ask whether you want to restore your previous New Tab settings. Select Keep Changes. If you reject that prompt, Edge can restore its default New Tab page and the extension will appear not to work.
Extension considerations
- Only install an extension you trust, because a New Tab extension can control what appears whenever you open a tab.
- Check the publisher, permissions, reviews, and update history on the Add-ons listing.
- Browser updates or extension changes can disable or reset a custom New Tab page.
- Work or school administrators may block extensions or enforce Edge policies.
Changing the startup page or Home button is different
Edge has separate settings for startup pages, the Home button, and New Tabs. Setting Google in either of the first two locations will not replace the page opened by Ctrl+T.

- Select Add a new page.
- Enter
https://www.google.com. - Select Add.
This controls what Edge opens when the browser starts. It does not control new tabs opened after Edge is already running.

Make the Home button open Google
- On the Start, home, and new tab page settings page, turn on Show home button on the toolbar.
- Select Set custom site.
- Enter or confirm
https://www.google.com. - Select Save.
You can open these startup, Home, and related settings directly with:

On managed Windows or macOS installations, administrators can control whether the New Tab search box uses Bing or redirects to the address bar. The policy is named NewTabPageSearchBox and supports Edge 85 and later on Windows and macOS. It is not supported on Android or iOS.

redirectThe policy alone does not select Google. The administrator must also configure a non-Bing default search provider, including the DefaultSearchProviderEnabled and DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL policies. After changing policies, restart Edge and check the relevant settings page.

FAQ
Can I change Edge’s built-in New Tab page to Google without an extension?
No. Edge does not provide a built-in setting that replaces the complete New Tab page with Google.com. You can redirect New Tab searches to the address bar, but the page itself remains Edge’s standard page unless you install an extension.

Why does Edge still show Bing after I select Google?
Changing the address-bar search engine affects address-bar searches. The New Tab page’s own search box can remain Bing-powered. Go to Address bar and search and set Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to Address bar.
Does setting Google as the startup page change Ctrl+T?
No. Startup settings control what opens when Edge launches. The Home button and New Tab page are separate settings.
Can Bing be removed from Edge’s search-engine list?
No. Changing the default search engine to Google does not remove Bing from Edge’s integrated provider list.
What should I do if the New Tab extension stops working?
Open edge://extensions, confirm that the extension is enabled, and accept Edge’s prompt with Keep Changes if it asks whether to restore the previous New Tab settings.
The Bottom Line
For Google searches, set Google as Edge’s address-bar search engine and change Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to Address bar. For the actual Google webpage on every new tab, install a trusted New Tab extension; Edge’s built-in settings cannot make that replacement.
