Netflix has separate controls for subtitle appearance and subtitle language. Change font size, style, shadow, or background from your profile settings on the web or Android, or from playback settings on supported TVs. Choose the language track separately from Audio & Subtitles while a title is playing. The exact controls depend on your device, the subtitle language, your country, and the title’s available tracks.
Know which Netflix control you need
Use Subtitle appearance when subtitles are hard to read or you want a different font, size, shadow, or background. This changes how text is rendered, not the language being spoken or displayed.
Use Audio & Subtitles during playback when you want Spanish instead of English, captions instead of subtitles, or another available track. You can also set preferred audio and subtitle languages in your profile, but a title can offer only the languages Netflix has licensed and supplied for that title.

- Accessibility: your phone, tablet, TV, or streaming device may enlarge text independently of Netflix.
These controls can overlap. For example, a small Netflix subtitle setting may still look very large if your television’s caption-size or display-zoom setting is enabled. Conversely, a profile appearance change may work on a browser but not render on an older television. Identify which layer is responsible before changing settings repeatedly.

Change Netflix subtitle size and style in a web browser
The browser account page exposes the most complete set of appearance controls. Netflix says you can change the font, size, shadow, and background color of subtitles and closed captions.
- Open the Netflix Account page in a browser and sign in.
- Open Profiles, then select the profile whose subtitles you want to change.
- Choose Subtitle appearance.
- Set the font, size, shadow, and background color. Use the preview to check contrast and legibility.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on the device where you will watch. On a TV or streaming player, reload Netflix if the new appearance is not visible.
These are profile-level Netflix settings, so they are intended to follow that profile. Actual rendering can still vary by device and subtitle language. Older devices may not display every appearance choice, even after you save it.
How to choose readable browser settings
Increase size only as much as necessary: an oversized line can cover action or wrap into more lines. A contrasting background or shadow can make white text readable over bright scenes, while a very opaque background may obscure details. If your household shares an account, remember that changing one profile does not change the others; edit the profile that is active on the viewing device.
If a TV does not show the browser change
On the Netflix home screen, open Settings, choose Get Help, and select Reload Netflix. Then start the title again. A TV app may support fewer style choices than the browser account page.
Change subtitle appearance on Android
Android has its own in-app path. Netflix states that changes made in the Android app apply only to titles played on that Android mobile device.
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you use for viewing.
- Tap Subtitle Appearance.
- Adjust the available font, size, shadow, or background options. The change saves automatically.
To undo the Android choices, return to Subtitle Appearance and select Restore Default Settings. If the appearance still does not change, Netflix recommends switching to another profile, switching back to the original profile, and trying the change again.
Do not assume an Android change has updated a smart TV or browser. Netflix specifically limits this Android-app appearance setting to titles played on that Android mobile device. For other screens, use the web profile setting or the device’s own caption controls.

- Start a movie or episode.
- Pause playback to open the player controls.
- Choose Settings, if that option is present.
- Select Size and Style, then choose the preferred settings.
- Resume playback to view the result.
If Settings is not shown, Netflix says that device does not support changing appearance for that subtitle language. This is a compatibility limitation, not an indication that your account setting failed. Connected-TV support also differs by device model and software version.
For a smart-TV appearance change that did not apply, return to the Netflix home screen and use the menu’s Get Help option to reload Netflix. If the problem continues on another type of device, Netflix directs viewers to contact support.
Why TV controls can look different
Netflix relies on the television or streaming player’s subtitle renderer. One model may offer size and style inside Netflix, while another exposes only language selection and uses system-wide caption settings. A streaming stick can also behave differently after a software update. Record the exact device model and app version if you need support, and test more than one title before concluding that the account setting is broken.
Choose a subtitle language while watching
Language selection is separate from appearance. The list shown is the set of subtitle, caption, and audio tracks available for that particular title and region.
Phone, tablet, or computer
- Start the title.
- Tap or click the screen to display playback controls.
- Open Audio & Subtitles.
- Under subtitles or captions, select the language you want.
- Close the panel and continue playback.
Most TVs and streaming players
- Start the title and pause it.
- Press the up or down direction on the remote to open playback options.
- Choose Audio & Subtitles.
- Select the available subtitle language, then return to the title.
Some TV interfaces place language choices at the bottom of the screen without an Audio & Subtitles icon. The exact remote action varies by device.
Apple TV
While the title is playing, swipe up on the remote touch surface or press the up arrow, then choose the subtitle language from the playback options. Netflix refers Apple-device users to Apple Support for device-specific appearance instructions; the Netflix language list still depends on the title.
Downloaded titles
For a downloaded title, Netflix shows the two most relevant languages rather than every language that might be available for streaming. If the language you need is missing, check the streaming version of the title or another title with a different language package.
Subtitles, captions, and forced dialogue
A subtitle track translates spoken dialogue. A captions track may also identify sounds, music, or speakers, depending on the language option. Some programs contain dialogue in a language different from the main audio. Netflix can show subtitles for that foreign-language dialogue even when ordinary subtitles are turned off; these are often called forced-dialogue subtitles and are part of the title’s presentation.

Set preferred subtitle and audio languages in your profile
Profile language preferences help Netflix choose languages automatically, but they cannot add a track that is not available for the title.
Web
- Open Account in a browser.
- Go to Profiles and select the profile.
- Open Languages.
- Choose preferred display, audio, and subtitle languages, then save.
Mobile
In the Netflix app, open My Netflix, tap the profile name, choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, and open the language or Audio & Subtitles preferences shown for your app version.
TV and streaming devices
Open the profile or language settings from the Netflix menu. During playback, the relevant preference may be listed under Other. Labels differ between TV models, so use Audio & Subtitles on the title itself when you need an immediate choice.

Preferred languages are not a guarantee that every new title will start with that track. Licensing, region, title metadata, a Kids profile, and the device’s supported languages can all change the list Netflix presents.

When subtitles are still too large
Netflix’s account appearance setting and your device’s accessibility settings can both enlarge subtitle text. Check both layers rather than repeatedly changing only one.
- If subtitles are large in Netflix across several devices, review the profile’s Subtitle appearance setting in a browser.
- If subtitles are large only on one phone, TV, or streaming player, inspect that device’s accessibility, caption, or display-size settings.
- Changing a device-level setting may affect subtitles and captions in every app on that device, not just Netflix.
Netflix documents this interaction in Subtitles are too large. After changing a device setting, restart playback so the app redraws the captions.
Fix subtitle appearance changes that do not apply
Browser setting saved, but the TV looks unchanged
Reload Netflix from the TV app: open Settings, choose Get Help, and select Reload Netflix. Then stop and restart the title. If the device is old, it may not render all selected fonts, shadows, sizes, or backgrounds.

Android setting saved, but playback is unchanged
Switch to another Netflix profile, switch back to the profile you edited, and try again. Confirm that you are testing a title played in the Android app, because Netflix limits Android appearance changes to Android mobile playback.
Smart-TV setting still does not change the text
From the Netflix home screen, open the menu’s Get Help option and reload Netflix. If the setting is absent entirely, the device may not support appearance changes for that subtitle language. For other devices, Netflix currently directs viewers to contact support.
The language you want is missing
Open Audio & Subtitles while the title plays and review the complete list. Language availability varies by title, region, licensing, profile settings, and device. Downloaded titles show only the two most relevant languages, so compare with the streaming version before concluding that Netflix has no track.
Subtitles appear even though they are turned off
Some titles include subtitles for dialogue spoken in a language other than the title’s original language. Netflix may display those forced-dialogue subtitles even when ordinary subtitles are disabled.
The subtitle style is available on one device but not another
Appearance controls are not implemented identically across platforms. A browser exposes more controls than many connected TVs, and older devices may fail to render a selected appearance. Test the same profile and title on the browser or a newer supported device to distinguish an account setting from a device limitation.
The wrong profile seems to be using the setting
Netflix stores appearance and preferred-language choices by profile. Check the profile avatar before editing, then verify that the same profile is active on the TV, phone, or browser. A change made to one household member’s profile will not automatically affect another profile.

- Country-language exclusion: Netflix says subtitle appearance settings are unavailable in some countries where Arabic or Hebrew is a primary language, even when the profile itself uses another language.
- Device rendering: Older hardware may not display every selected appearance, and connected TVs generally provide fewer controls than a browser.
- TV language support: A TV or streaming player may support fewer subtitle languages or styles than the Netflix website or mobile app.
- Title availability: Netflix cannot display a subtitle language that is not supplied for that title in your region.
- Profile separation: Appearance and language preferences are tied to the profile you edit. Verify the active profile before troubleshooting.
- Kids profiles: Available language choices and playback behavior can differ on a Kids profile; use the title’s playback menu to see the tracks that profile can access.

A practical way to get readable subtitles
- Choose the correct Netflix profile before editing anything.
- For a consistent look, set font, size, shadow, and background in a browser and save.
- For Android-only viewing, adjust Subtitle Appearance in the Android app and verify it on an Android title.
- On a TV, use playback Settings if available; otherwise rely on the browser profile setting and reload Netflix.
- Choose the subtitle language from Audio & Subtitles for the specific title.
- If text is unexpectedly huge, check both Netflix and the device’s accessibility settings.
- If a language or style is missing, treat the title, region, and device as possible limits rather than repeatedly changing the same profile control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing subtitle size on Netflix change every profile?
No. Appearance and preferred-language settings belong to the profile you edit. Other profiles keep their own settings.

Why did my Netflix subtitle change not appear on my TV?
Reload Netflix from the TV app by opening Settings, choosing Get Help, and selecting Reload Netflix. The TV may also support fewer appearance options or may be too old to render the selected style.
Can I change Netflix subtitle appearance on an iPhone or iPad?
Netflix documents appearance paths for the web, Android, and supported TVs. For Apple devices, Netflix refers viewers to Apple Support for device-specific appearance instructions. You can still select an available language during playback.
