To change a Minecraft modpack version, use the launcher’s own version control rather than editing files manually. CurseForge, Modrinth and Prism Launcher provide an in-place switch; ATLauncher performs the change through a reinstall; MultiMC has no documented built-in modpack switch and requires a new instance with selected files copied across. Back up your world and instance before any change, and treat downgrades as potentially destructive.
What changing a modpack version actually does
A modpack version is a published build of a collection of mods, configuration files, resource packs and, sometimes, a particular Minecraft and loader combination. Changing that build is different from changing only the base Minecraft version in an instance. The launcher resolves the target pack release, downloads or removes files, and updates the instance according to that pack’s metadata.

The exact menu names below reflect launcher interfaces documented on October 14, 2026. Labels can move between releases. If a control is not in the location described, look for the instance’s settings, profile options or reinstall controls rather than editing the pack folder by hand.
Before you switch: a safe checklist
Confirm the target release exists
Launchers can offer only versions that the pack author or platform has published. In CurseForge, for example, the version menu appears only when another file is available for the pack. If the target release is absent, the launcher cannot install it through that profile.

Close Minecraft and its launcher-managed processes
Quit the game before updating. Files that are still open can be locked or left in a partially updated state. This is explicitly important for Prism Launcher and is good practice in every launcher.
Back up the world and instance
Make a copy of the world before changing versions, particularly when the target uses a different Minecraft version or loader. Also preserve the instance folder so you can recover configuration, screenshots, resource packs and locally added files. Keep the backup outside the live instance directory and do not delete the old copy until the new installation has launched and the world has been checked.

Pack updates can replace files that you edited locally. CurseForge Support states: “Any custom changes you made to the modpack’s content will be overwritten when changing versions, unless you select Update to new Profile.” Make a separate copy of custom configuration, scripts, shaders or manually added mods, and use the separate-profile option where it is offered.
Decide whether you are updating, changing Minecraft, or downgrading
- Pack update: a newer or older published build of the same pack line.
- Different Minecraft version: a pack release based on another game version. Compatibility checks may require an additional confirmation.
- Downgrade: moving to an older pack or game build. This has the highest risk for world and settings compatibility.

How to change a modpack version in the CurseForge app
Use the version menu
- Open the My Modpacks view.
- Hover over the pack you want to change.
- Click the small arrows beside Play.
- Choose Update to the latest version, or open the dropdown and select a specific published version.
- Click Continue and allow the app to complete the update.
The list is limited to files uploaded for that pack. An author’s failure to publish a build for the desired Minecraft version means there is no selectable release in this menu.
Keep the current installation as a separate profile
Changing versions can overwrite custom content. CurseForge offers an option labelled Update to new Profile; in some interface versions it appears as Update to a separate modpack profile. Select that option when you want the new release installed separately while retaining the existing profile and its modifications.

Fix a missing Change Version control
If the version control is unavailable, open the profile’s options and disable Allow content management for this profile. Return to the pack card and check the arrows beside Play again. The control still will not appear if the author has not uploaded another compatible file.
How to switch a modpack version in the Modrinth App
Change the installed pack release
- Open Library.
- Select the instance containing the modpack.
- Click the gear icon to open its settings.
- Under the installed modpack, click Change version.
- Choose the target release from the available versions.
- Confirm the update when the app presents the final prompt.
The Modrinth changelog describes a version picker that shows every available release and asks for confirmation before risky changes, including a release tied to a different Minecraft version or a downgrade.
Update to a newer Minecraft version
- Open the same Change version list.
- Enable Show incompatible so releases for another Minecraft version are visible.
- Select the newer target release.
- When the warning appears, click Update to ….
- Confirm with Update modpack.
That second confirmation is intentional. It acknowledges that the selected pack does not match the instance’s current game version and allows the app to change it. Do not skip the backup step simply because the app displays a warning.
How to change a pack version in Prism Launcher
Update a platform-installed pack
- Close Minecraft.
- In Prism Launcher, right-click the instance and choose Edit.
- Open the platform tab associated with the pack: CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Open the version dropdown.
- Select the target pack release.
- Click Update pack and wait for the operation to finish.
Some guides note that widening the Prism window may be necessary to see the complete version list. If the pack came from a platform source, use that source’s tab; the available releases depend on where the pack was obtained.
Update from a downloaded ZIP
For a pack ZIP that you downloaded yourself rather than installed from a platform tab, use Update from File. Select the ZIP and follow Prism’s update confirmation. Keep the original ZIP as a rollback reference.

Account for version-label differences
Prism’s official site listing showed version 11.0.3, while a third-party guide published in 2026 referred to 11.1.1, released in September 2026. That discrepancy is unresolved here; rely on the menus displayed by your installed build. The step sequence above comes from a community guide rather than verified official in-place documentation, so make a backup before relying on it for an important world.
How to change a modpack version in ATLauncher
Use Reinstall with a selected version
- Open the Instances tab.
- Select the instance.
- Choose Edit Instance.
- Click Reinstall.
- Under Version to Install, choose the target pack build.
- Click Reinstall again to begin.
ATLauncher’s operation is a reinstall rather than a narrowly scoped in-place patch. Treat it as a replacement of the managed pack files: preserve the world and instance backup, and save any manually edited configuration before confirming. One guide notes that a pack’s newest build appears at the top of the version list, but verify the version number rather than relying on its position.
How to change a modpack version in MultiMC
Understand the limitation
No built-in MultiMC modpack-version switch is documented in the available guidance. The MultiMC Instance Version function covers the base Minecraft version and can replace loaders such as Forge or LiteLoader; it is not the same as selecting a new published modpack build.
Install the target in a new instance
- Click Add Instance.
- Open the Modrinth tab.
- Choose the modpack and select the target version.
- Install it as a separate instance.
- Copy the needed
saves, resource packs, screenshots and options files from the old instance into the new one. - Launch the new instance and check the world, controls and visual settings.
- Delete the old instance only after the new installation works and your backup is safe.
This manual route takes longer, but it lets you decide exactly which personal files move. Do not copy the entire old instance over the new one, because doing so can replace the target pack’s files and defeat the version change.

GDLauncher is not required for the procedures above, but its documented route is short: open the instance’s settings page and click Change Modpack Version. Select the available release and complete the confirmation. Back up the world and instance first, because behavior for custom files and mismatched Minecraft versions is not established in the available guidance.

Updating a modpack to a newer Minecraft version
A newer pack release may also move the underlying Minecraft version. Modrinth makes this case explicit: enable Show incompatible, select the target, choose Update to …, then confirm with Update modpack. The app’s warning is a compatibility gate, not an assurance that an existing world will remain safe.
For CurseForge, Prism Launcher, ATLauncher and MultiMC, the available instructions do not establish a universal procedure for changing the underlying Minecraft version during a pack switch. Check the target pack’s listed Minecraft and loader versions, make a full backup, and do not assume that a successful download means the world is compatible.

Older packs may expect an earlier game data format, older registries, different mod behavior or different configuration keys. The Fabulously Optimized wiki’s Modrinth App instructions give a direct warning: “Never downgrade to an older version, this could corrupt your worlds and settings!” Treat that as a practical rule: test a downgrade on a copied world or a new instance first, and keep the original installation untouched until you have verified every important save.

If you must downgrade, export or copy the world before starting, record the current pack and Minecraft versions, and use a separate instance when the launcher supports one. A failed downgrade is easier to recover from when the original instance has not been overwritten.
Troubleshooting common version-switch problems
The target version is not listed
- Confirm that the pack author published a file for the target version.
- Check that you are looking at the correct platform tab in Prism Launcher.
- In Modrinth, enable Show incompatible when the target uses another Minecraft version.
- In CurseForge, verify that content management is enabled for the profile.
The Change Version button is missing
In CurseForge, open Profile Options and disable Allow content management for this profile. If the arrows beside Play still do not appear, there may be no alternate uploaded file for that pack.

Your edits disappeared after the switch
That is expected when the update replaces managed content. Restore your saved configuration or manually added files from the backup. For future CurseForge changes, use Update to new Profile or Update to a separate modpack profile to keep the old installation intact.
The launcher refuses an incompatible release
Read the warning rather than forcing the operation. In Modrinth, the required path is Show incompatible → target version → Update to … → Update modpack. If another launcher does not document equivalent behavior, create a separate instance and test there instead of altering the working profile.
The game launches but the world behaves incorrectly
Exit without saving further changes, restore the pre-switch world or instance backup, and test the target pack with a disposable copy. Do not continue playing the only copy of a world after a suspected version or loader mismatch.
You cannot tell whether the change finished
Wait for the launcher’s download or reinstall task to complete, then start the instance once with the game closed from other launchers. Check the displayed pack and Minecraft versions before opening an important save.
A practical decision guide
- Use CurseForge when the pack is managed there and you want a dropdown plus an optional separate profile.
- Use Modrinth App when you need an explicit workflow for releases tied to another Minecraft version, including the required confirmation.
- Use Prism Launcher when your instance is already there or you need to update from a platform listing or a local ZIP.
- Use ATLauncher when its instance management is your current setup and you are prepared for a reinstall-style operation.
- Use the MultiMC new-instance method when you need maximum control over which personal files move, because no automatic modpack switch is documented.
Whatever the launcher, keep the original world and instance until the target build has launched successfully, the expected mods are present, and your saves load normally.
