To change a child’s Minecraft multiplayer permissions, use the parent account in the Microsoft family group and open the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings or manage them through the Xbox Family app. Choose controls for the child’s edition—Java or Bedrock—and the activity you want to allow. These account permissions apply even when the child plays Minecraft on a platform other than Xbox, but they do not override a world’s own multiplayer settings or a console’s online-play requirements.
The main task is to match the setting to what the child is trying to do: join multiplayer or Realms, play across networks, find or add friends, or communicate. These are separate capabilities, so enabling one does not necessarily enable the others.
What you need before changing a child’s settings
Minecraft parental controls for multiplayer are managed through Microsoft and Xbox family-safety features, not through a single Minecraft setting that applies to every account and platform. Minecraft Help explains that these controls can govern access to online games, communication, and purchases even if the child does not play on an Xbox.
- A child’s Microsoft account: The child needs to use the Microsoft account whose permissions you want to manage. If the game is signed in with a different account, changing the first account’s settings will not address the account being used in Minecraft.
- A Microsoft family group: The parent account and child account must be associated through a family group. If they are not, create a group from the parent account and add the existing child account or create a child account.
- The parent account: Sign in as the parent to make changes. Minecraft Help states that only parent accounts can modify a child’s settings.
- The child’s Minecraft edition: Identify whether the child plays Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The available multiplayer controls differ.
The age at which an account is treated as a child account depends on the region. Do not rely on a single age threshold; check the account setup requirements that apply where the child lives. If more than one child uses Minecraft, select and review each account individually rather than assuming a change to one child’s profile carries over to siblings.

It also helps to know what the child wants to do before opening the settings. Joining a friend’s world, joining a Realm, entering a server, playing with someone on another platform, adding a friend, and using multiplayer communication do not all represent the same permission. A focused change is easier to verify and avoids opening unrelated access.
Change the settings through a parent account
Minecraft’s family-controls guidance describes two management routes: Xbox privacy and online-safety settings on the web, or the Xbox Family app. The exact labels and screen layout can change, so follow the current labels shown in the account interface if they differ from the descriptions below.
- Confirm the family relationship. Sign in with the parent’s Microsoft account and check that the child’s account appears in the family group. Add the child or create a child account if needed.
- Choose a management route. Use the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings site or open the Xbox Family app. Sign in with the parent account, not the child’s account.
- Select the child. Open that child’s privacy or online-safety controls. Settings made for one child account should not be assumed to apply to another child in the family.
- Match the control to the edition and activity. Find the permission for multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friends, or communication as appropriate. The wording and grouping may differ between the website, app, and account interface.
- Review and apply the choice. Use the options presented in the current account interface. Avoid assuming that one multiplayer permission also allows every other activity; these capabilities have separate controls.
- Check Minecraft again. If the new permission is not reflected in the game, close and restart Minecraft or sign in again. Restarting is recommended in Minecraft’s Realms Stories permissions guidance; it is a useful refresh step, not a universal requirement stated for every setting change.
Before saving or leaving the controls, check that you are editing the intended child account and the intended permission. If the problem is that a child cannot join a cross-platform Bedrock game, for instance, a friend or communication control is not a substitute for the cross-network-play setting. Likewise, changing multiplayer access does not automatically make another player a Minecraft friend.

Which multiplayer controls apply to Java and Bedrock?
The useful distinction is not simply “multiplayer on” or “multiplayer off.” A child may need permission to join a game, connect across platforms, find or add other players, or communicate with them. Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance distinguishes Bedrock and Java. Its detailed page surfaced in a Spanish translation that warns of possible translation errors, so treat the descriptions below as a guide to the control types and use the live account interface for exact wording.

If you want to allow a particular activity while restricting another, change the relevant permission rather than treating the multiplayer setting as a complete safety switch. For example, permission to join an online game is distinct from permission to communicate or discover other players.
For Bedrock, consider the child’s intended play in separate steps. First, can the child join multiplayer at all? Second, does the child need to play with people using another platform? Third, does the child need to find or add those players? Finally, what communication access should be available? Checking the corresponding controls separately helps pinpoint the setting if a specific activity remains blocked.

For Java, the surfaced control areas include friend requests and communication. The available options and labels should be checked in the current account interface; do not assume that the Bedrock list or its wording applies to Java. Minecraft’s Java guidance includes friend-only communication as an available choice, but parents should confirm that choice is currently offered for the account they are managing.
These differences matter when setting boundaries. A parent might allow a child to join multiplayer but still review who can communicate with the child. Or a child might need cross-network access for a particular Bedrock game while having no need to change friend-discovery settings. The right combination depends on the intended activity and the choices the interface offers, rather than on a single universal recommended configuration.
Why permission may not be enough to join a game
Account-level permission is only one gate. A child can be allowed to play multiplayer by the family account and still be blocked by the host’s world settings, a missing friend connection, outdated game versions, or a platform’s online-service requirements.
- World-level multiplayer is disabled. In Bedrock, the host’s world must allow multiplayer. A guest’s account permission cannot turn multiplayer on in someone else’s world.
- The players are not connected as Minecraft friends. Minecraft’s support guidance includes friend-list status among the checks for a friend who cannot join a Bedrock world. Check that the relevant players are connected as friends in Minecraft.
- The game versions do not match. Confirm both players have updated Minecraft. An update mismatch can prevent joining even when account permissions are correct.
- A console online service may be required. Minecraft’s support article lists Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus for console online play. Requirements can change and depend on the platform and current service rules, so confirm the console’s current requirements rather than assuming a subscription is or is not needed.
- The account permission is still blocking access. Revisit the child’s family settings and verify the permission for the relevant edition and activity. Also confirm you changed the intended child account.
Check these conditions separately: changing a family permission cannot enable multiplayer in a host’s world, add a player to a friend list, update a game, or satisfy a console service requirement.
A useful troubleshooting sequence is to establish which player is hosting and which account cannot proceed. If the child is joining somebody else’s Bedrock world, the host’s multiplayer setting belongs to the host, while the child’s family permission belongs to the joining account. If the child is hosting, check the child’s world setting as well as the visiting player’s ability to join. This distinction prevents changing the wrong account or expecting a family permission to override the host’s choices.
Next, compare the intended activity with the relevant permission. A friend who can play on the same platform but not across platforms points toward cross-network play as an additional control to check. A child who can enter a game but cannot talk has a communication issue, not necessarily a multiplayer-joining issue. A player who is not discoverable or cannot be added points toward the friend controls. These clues do not prove which setting is responsible, but they help narrow the check.
Finally, check platform conditions. For console play, verify current online-service rules for the child’s platform; service requirements can change. Minecraft names Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus in its support guidance, but that list is not a substitute for checking the platform’s current terms. Do not infer a price or assume a subscription is required for every device or every type of play.

Java servers and Realms are different options
A Java player can join an online server without subscribing to Realms. Minecraft’s server guidance describes choosing Multiplayer, then selecting an existing server or adding one or using direct connect with a server address. Not requiring a Realms subscription does not remove the child account’s multiplayer permission requirement: the family settings still determine whether the child can access multiplayer.

A Realms permission concerns Realms access; a server connection has its own joining process. If the child cannot connect, check the applicable account permission as well as the server or world’s own access conditions.
This distinction can clarify what a child is asking to join. If the activity is an online Java server, the child can use the in-game Multiplayer screen and select a server already available there, add a server, or use direct connect with its address. If the activity is a Realm, it is Realms access that matters. Minecraft says a Java online server does not require a Realms subscription, but that statement is about the subscription—not a waiver of the family-account multiplayer permission.
For Bedrock, the joining problem may involve the host’s world, friend connections, cross-network play, or console online service as well as the account’s multiplayer permission. Avoid applying the Java server instructions to a Bedrock world or assuming that every multiplayer destination uses the same access path.
What parental controls can—and cannot—do for safety
Microsoft family controls can govern which online games a child may access, whom the child can communicate with, and what the child can buy. They are useful boundaries, but they do not make every online interaction risk-free or guarantee that every server follows the same rules.
Minecraft describes proactive chat filtering for Bedrock Edition, Java Edition Realms, and verified partner Bedrock servers. That scope should not be read as covering every independently operated server. Minecraft’s safety guidance surfaced in a Portuguese translation that notes possible translation errors; use the current English guidance and the account’s live options when details matter.
Purchase permissions are a separate family-control area. They can matter for spending in Minecraft experiences, including Marketplace purchases, but changing multiplayer access does not itself change purchase permissions.

Think of the controls as distinct boundaries rather than as one complete safety package. The family account can set permissions for online-game access, communication, and purchases. Edition-specific controls shape which multiplayer activities are allowed. A host’s world settings and the rules of a server or Realm also affect access. No single permission should be treated as a guarantee that every online space is appropriate or that every interaction is covered by chat filtering.
If the goal is to let a child play with known friends, review the multiplayer and friend-related controls, communication options, and any required cross-network permission together. Keep purchase settings in mind separately if Marketplace spending is also a concern. These are adjacent parental-control tasks, not consequences of changing the multiplayer setting.
Troubleshoot by isolating the blocked step
When access fails, identify where it stops instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
- The child cannot access any multiplayer activity: Verify that the parent and child accounts are in the same Microsoft family group, then review the child’s multiplayer permission for the edition being played.
- The child cannot play with someone on another platform: For Bedrock, check the cross-network-play permission in addition to multiplayer access. Confirm that the other player’s platform and game support the intended connection.
- The child cannot find or add a particular player: Review the friend-discovery or friend-request controls that apply to the edition, then confirm the players are connected as Minecraft friends where the world requires it.
- The child can join but cannot communicate: Review the communication permission separately. Available audience choices can differ, so use the options shown for the child’s account and edition.
- A friend cannot join the child’s Bedrock world: Check the host world’s multiplayer setting, the joining account’s multiplayer permission, Minecraft friend connections, game updates, and any applicable console online-service requirement.
- A setting appears unchanged after an edit: Close and restart Minecraft or sign in again to refresh the session. If the account interface still shows the old choice, return to the parent controls and check that the correct child and permission were selected.
If you are unsure where to start, describe the blocked step precisely: “cannot join any multiplayer game,” “cannot join this friend’s world,” “cannot connect across platforms,” “cannot add this player,” or “can join but cannot communicate.” Each description points to a different part of the permission and access chain. Check only controls relevant to that symptom, then test again.
Restarting or signing in again is a refresh step if Minecraft does not reflect a permission change. Minecraft’s Realms Stories permissions guidance recommends restarting after settings changes, but this should not be taken to mean that every change requires a restart. If refreshing does not help, verify the family relationship, selected child, edition, and exact permission before moving on to world, friend, update, or console-service checks.

Can I change a child’s settings while signed in to the child’s account?
Minecraft Help says only parent accounts can modify a child’s settings. Sign in with the parent account, select the child, and open the relevant privacy or online-safety controls.
Does allowing multiplayer also allow cross-platform play and communication?

Check that multiplayer is enabled for the host’s world, the joining account is allowed to join multiplayer, the players are connected as Minecraft friends where required, both games are updated, and any applicable console online-service requirement is met.
Do Marketplace purchase controls change when I change multiplayer access?
No. Purchase permissions are a separate family-control area. They can cover spending in Minecraft experiences, including Marketplace purchases, but changing multiplayer access does not itself change purchase settings.
