To preserve a photo’s original detail, choose the app’s highest-quality option in the attachment preview—or send the image as a file/document when you need the unchanged file. In Google Messages, select HD+ Original quality and use RCS instead of MMS when available. In Telegram, use Send In High Quality for an HD image, or send the photo as a file for its original resolution and file size. WhatsApp distinguishes full-HD photos from files sent without compression, but its current official page does not document a reliable, universal tap-by-tap path. Apple Messages-specific controls are not established here, so do not apply these Android instructions to an iPhone.
What “original quality” means in a messaging app
Messaging services commonly offer three different delivery types:
- Optimized or standard photo: The app reduces dimensions, detail, or file size so the image uploads and downloads quickly.
- HD or full-HD photo: The app preserves more pixels and detail than its standard mode, but may still process the image. HD is not automatically a byte-for-byte copy of the original.
- Original file: The recipient receives the source file at its original resolution and file size. Sending an image as a file or document is the clearest way to request this result.
“Original quality” therefore has two parts: the visual data in the image and the file itself. A high-resolution preview can look excellent while still being a newly encoded copy. If you need the exact JPEG, HEIC, PNG, RAW, or other source—including its dimensions and file size—use a documented file-transfer option and verify the received file.

File preservation can matter for printing, editing, evidence, archiving, or sharing an image with another service. For casual viewing, however, an HD photo may be easier for the recipient to open and may use less data than a full source file. Decide which result you actually need before changing a setting.

The transport also matters. Google says RCS can carry clearer media than MMS because carriers compress MMS messages. RCS availability depends on the device, carrier, region, and conversation; all participants need RCS enabled for RCS features to apply in that chat.

Before you change a setting
- Identify the app and platform. Google Messages, Telegram, WhatsApp, and Apple Messages do not use the same controls. A menu name from one service may not appear in another.
- Decide whether you need visual clarity or the original file. HD is usually sufficient for viewing in a chat. Original-file delivery is the safer requirement for editing, printing, archiving, or any workflow that depends on exact dimensions or encoding.
- Check the connection type. On Google Messages, an RCS conversation is preferable to MMS. A high-quality selection cannot undo carrier compression after a fallback to MMS.
- Keep the source image. Do not delete it until the recipient has saved and checked the delivered file.
Google Messages: select HD+ Original quality
Set the quality for a photo
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap the control for attaching media and choose a photo from Gallery.
- When the image preview appears, choose HD+ Original quality.
- Send the message.
Google defines HD+ Original quality as sending media “at full media resolution.” Google also says the selection is saved for future images, so you normally do not have to reselect it every time. The option remains changeable: when attaching a later image, choose the quality mode you want for that message. If you select a lower-data or optimized mode for one image, check the preview again when you next attach a photo rather than assuming the previous choice is still appropriate.
Make sure the conversation is using RCS
For the clearest result, check that the chat is using RCS rather than falling back to MMS. Google’s guidance is explicit: carriers compress MMS messages, and that compression can affect image quality. RCS support is not universal; it varies with your carrier, region, device, and service availability. RCS features in a conversation require all participants to have RCS turned on.

A recipient who lacks RCS may cause the conversation to use a different delivery path, so confirm the chat status rather than judging the sender’s setting alone.
What to expect when the recipient receives it
- Full media resolution is not a promise of identical bytes. Google’s wording describes resolution, not a guarantee that metadata, encoding, or file size will match the source.
- The recipient’s app and connection still matter. A compatible RCS conversation is needed for the RCS path; a fallback to MMS can change the result.
- Higher quality generally uses more data. Google presents chat-optimized media as faster and lower-data than HD+ full media resolution.
- The saved preference is not a universal account setting. It applies to the choices Google Messages exposes for later attachments and can be changed per new attachment.
If Google Messages still sends a blurry image
- Open the attachment preview again and confirm that HD+ Original quality, rather than the lower-data option, is selected.
- Check whether the conversation is RCS. If it has fallen back to MMS, carrier compression is the likely explanation.
- Ask the recipient whether their app received the message through RCS or MMS. The sender’s setting cannot override a transport change.
- Have the recipient save the image and inspect its dimensions and file size. An in-chat thumbnail is not proof of the delivered file’s properties.
- For an exact source file, stop using photo mode and choose a file-transfer method that preserves the original file.
Telegram: HD photo versus an original file
Send a higher-detail HD photo
Telegram’s June 3, 2025 product announcement describes two ways to select its HD photo mode:
- Attach a photo and tap the SD button in the photo editor to switch to HD, or
- Use Send In High Quality in the attachment menu.
Telegram says its HD mode provides “4 times the pixels, while using less than 0.5 MB of data.” Those are Telegram’s own product figures for this mode, not an independent measurement. The announcement also distinguishes ordinary photos, which are optimized, from HD photos, which carry more detail. The quoted data figure describes Telegram’s HD mode; it should not be treated as a promise that every image, connection, or device will use exactly that amount.

Send the unchanged source as a file
If the requirement is the original resolution and file size, attach the image as a file rather than as a regular photo or assuming that HD is identical to the source. Telegram Tips states that photos sent as files retain their original resolution and file size. This is the appropriate route for work where dimensions, compression history, or the exact file matters.
Telegram says users have been able to send full-resolution photos in the original file size since 2014. That is Telegram’s historical product claim. It does not mean every photo sent through the normal photo editor is still the original file; the app’s regular photo mode is optimized, and HD is a separate processed mode. If the recipient needs to edit the image, tell them to download the file rather than save a screen capture or rely on a chat preview.
Decide between Telegram’s three practical choices

When sending several images, you can mix choices: use HD for pictures that only need to look sharp in the chat and file sending for the few images that must remain unchanged. That avoids imposing the largest transfer on every recipient while preserving the files that have a specific technical requirement.
WhatsApp: understand full HD and uncompressed files
WhatsApp’s official messaging page makes two separate claims:
- You can send a photo or video with full HD quality.
- You can send files up to 2 GB without compressing them.
These are different delivery promises. Full HD describes a higher-quality media option; it does not, on the information available here, establish that WhatsApp sends the unchanged original file with identical bytes, metadata, and file size. The uncompressed-file statement applies to the file-transfer route. The 2 GB figure is the published limit for that file claim, not a recommendation to send files that large over a limited mobile connection.

Open WhatsApp’s current attachment interface and look for its HD control when you want a high-quality photo; when exact preservation is required, use the app’s file/document route if it is available in your version, then verify the received file.

If the file option is not visible, do not substitute the HD photo control and call the result original. Instead, update the app through the normal platform channel, check the current attachment choices, or use another file-transfer service that explicitly preserves the source. The documented WhatsApp claims support the distinction between HD media and uncompressed files, but not a universal set of button names for every device.
Why a photo becomes blurry after sending
The app optimized the image
Standard photo modes are designed for conversation speed and lower data use. They can resize or recompress an image before upload. Telegram explicitly describes regular photos as optimized, and Google contrasts chat-optimized media with its HD+ full-resolution setting.
The message used MMS
MMS is carrier-mediated and may compress images. Google specifically warns that carrier compression can affect image quality. A sender can select a high-quality option and still receive a compressed result if the conversation falls back to MMS.
HD was mistaken for original
HD is a quality level, not a universal technical definition. Telegram treats HD and original-file sending as separate options. WhatsApp likewise separates full-HD media from files sent without compression. If the requirement is byte-for-byte preservation, use a file attachment.
The recipient is viewing a preview
Some messaging apps show a downscaled preview while the full asset downloads. Ask the recipient to save the attachment and inspect its dimensions and file size rather than judging only the in-chat thumbnail. This check is especially important for legal, print, archival, or editing work.
The image was changed before attachment
A messaging setting cannot restore detail that was already removed by an earlier export, screenshot, crop, or edit. Compare the file selected in the attachment picker with the source you intend to send. If the selected copy is already smaller, changing from standard to HD only affects the copy being uploaded.

A reliable workflow for preserving an image
- Define the requirement. Choose an HD photo when you mainly need clearer viewing in the chat. Choose an original file when dimensions, file size, metadata, or exact encoding matter.
- Use the app’s quality control at attachment time. In Google Messages, select HD+ Original quality. In Telegram, select Send In High Quality for HD or switch to file sending for the source. In WhatsApp, distinguish its full-HD photo control from its file-transfer option.
- Use a suitable transport. In Google Messages, prefer RCS and avoid an MMS fallback when clarity is important.
- Send one test image first. Compare the received file’s pixel dimensions and file size with the source before sending a large batch.
- Verify on the receiving device. Save the image, inspect its properties, and confirm that it opens in the expected format. A sharp-looking preview alone does not prove original-file delivery.
- Keep the source until verification is complete. Do not delete the original from the sending device until the recipient confirms that the required file arrived intact.
For a test, choose an image with known dimensions and a distinctive file size. Have the recipient report the saved file’s dimensions, extension, and size rather than saying only that it “looks clear.” This separates a genuinely preserved file from an attractive but recompressed preview.

Data, storage, and delivery trade-offs
Original and HD files usually require more data and storage than optimized images. Uploading can take longer on a congested connection, and the recipient may wait longer for a download. These practical costs are the reason apps expose lower-data photo modes.
- Use Wi-Fi for large original files when mobile-data limits are a concern.
- Send only the required images at original quality instead of changing every conversation to the largest mode.
- Warn recipients before sending a large batch so they can manage storage and data use.
- For repeated transfers, keep the original files in a dedicated file-sharing workflow rather than relying on a chat preview.
- Remember that a file can consume space on both devices even when the conversation itself shows only a small thumbnail.
Telegram’s vendor-published HD figure—less than 0.5 MB of data and four times the pixels—illustrates why an HD mode can be a compromise between optimized media and a full source file. It is not a guarantee for every photo. Google similarly positions chat-optimized media as faster and lower-data than HD+ full media resolution.

Quality controls are app-specific and can change with updates. Google’s documented setting applies to Google Messages; Telegram’s HD and file behavior applies to Telegram; WhatsApp’s two advertised routes should not be conflated. No current Apple support path validating a photo-quality control in iPhone Messages was established for this guide. Is HD the same as original quality?
