To change the player limit, stop the Minecraft server, open its server.properties file, edit the max-players value, save the file, and start the server again. Hosting panels usually expose the same setting as a Max Players field. Java and Bedrock use the same property name but separate configuration files, so edit the file belonging to the edition and server instance you actually run.
What the max-players setting does
max-players sets the server’s simultaneous-player ceiling. It is a server-side limit: changing it does not add accounts, grant permissions, increase bandwidth, or reserve hardware. A player who connects after the configured capacity is reached can still be refused even when the server is otherwise online.

Editing the file while the process is running may have no immediate effect, and a graceful shutdown can rewrite configuration files. Stop the server first, make the change, then restart it.
Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server both use a property named max-players, but their defaults, documented ranges, and surrounding configuration are not interchangeable. A Java server’s file will normally be in that Java server instance’s root directory; a Bedrock server’s file belongs to the Bedrock Dedicated Server installation. If you operate several worlds or instances, change the file for the instance whose address your players use.

Check the edition and server software first
Before editing anything, identify the edition and implementation:
- Java Edition: the server is a Java process and commonly has files such as
eula.txt,server.properties, a world directory, and a server JAR. Paper is a Java server implementation with its own documented defaults. - Bedrock Dedicated Server: the installation uses Bedrock’s server executable and its own
server.propertiesand world directories. - Managed hosting: the provider may hide the file behind a control-panel setting. The label is commonly Max Players, Player Slots, or similar, but the exact menu varies by provider.
Do not assume that a value shown in a tutorial is a default for every server. Microsoft Learn documents a Bedrock default of 10. PaperMC’s reference lists 20 as the Paper default. The vanilla Java default was not established in the references used here, so treat any Java value displayed by your installation as authoritative for that instance.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Use the hosting panel’s Stop button or the server console’s normal shutdown command. Wait until the process reports that it has stopped before opening the file. A clean stop reduces the chance of lost world data and prevents the running process from overwriting your edit.
2. Locate the server root
Open the directory that contains the server’s server.properties. On a self-hosted installation this is usually the same directory from which you launch the server. On a panel, use its file manager or configuration page; some panels keep files in a container and do not expose a conventional desktop path.
3. Make a backup
Copy server.properties to a dated backup before changing it. For example, use a name such as server.properties.before-slots-change. The file is plain text, so a backup lets you restore the previous value if another setting is accidentally changed.

4. Edit only the value
Open the file in a plain-text editor and find the line beginning with max-players=. Replace only the number. For example:
max-players=20can become:
max-players=30Keep the property name, equals sign, and spelling intact. Do not add quotation marks, commas, comments, or a second max-players line. If the file contains a commented example beginning with #, edit the active line instead.
5. Save without changing the file type
Save as plain text in the existing location. On Windows, make sure a text editor has not silently added .txt, creating a file such as server.properties.txt. If your editor offers an encoding choice, preserve the file’s existing encoding rather than converting it unnecessarily.
6. Start the same server instance
Restart the server through the same script, panel, or service that normally launches it. Starting a different world directory, profile, container, or JAR can make a correct edit appear ineffective because that process is reading another server.properties file.
7. Confirm the effective value
After startup completes, reconnect with enough test accounts to approach the new ceiling. Check the server console or the panel’s configuration display if it reports the loaded value. A restart is required before the new limit is effective; players already connected may not be disconnected merely because you lowered the number, but new connection attempts can be rejected once the effective limit is reached.

Use a hosting panel instead of editing the file
Many managed hosts provide a field such as Max Players on a settings, startup, or server-configuration page. The general process is:
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the server’s settings or startup configuration page.
- Find Max Players, Player Slots, or an equivalent field.
- Enter the desired positive integer permitted by that panel.
- Save or apply the change.
- Start or restart the server.
A panel field normally writes the corresponding property for you, so changing the file directly and changing the field are two ways of setting the same value. Do not use both methods at once while troubleshooting: a panel may regenerate server.properties from its own settings when the server starts. If a manual edit disappears, make the change in the panel’s field or check whether the provider marks that property as managed.
Panel limits are provider-specific. A host can restrict the largest value allowed by your plan, container, or account even when the underlying Minecraft software accepts a broader range. The panel’s validation message is the applicable limit for that service.

The Bedrock documentation is the basis for treating 10 as the documented Bedrock default. Some third-party example configurations show max-players=20; that is an example value, not evidence that 20 is Bedrock’s default.

Choose a sensible cap for your hardware
Increasing the number does not create capacity by itself. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference warns that higher values affect performance, and the Java reference likewise notes greater resource use as player count rises. More simultaneous players can increase CPU work, memory pressure, network traffic, entity updates, chunk loading, and storage activity, depending on what players are doing.

Use a cap that your server can sustain rather than simply entering the largest accepted integer:
- Start with the number of players you genuinely expect at the same time, not the size of your community or allowlist.
- Increase in small steps and observe tick rate, latency, memory use, and CPU load during normal activity.
- Test the busiest scenario you expect, such as players exploring different areas or generating new chunks simultaneously.
- Leave headroom for operating-system services, plugins or add-ons, backups, and temporary spikes.
- Lower the cap if the server becomes unresponsive, players time out, or gameplay slows as the group grows.
No universal player-to-RAM or player-to-CPU ratio is established by the references for this article. Hardware, simulation distance, view distance, world activity, mods, plugins, add-ons, and server software all change the result, so avoid treating a generic number as a guarantee.

Check the file after stopping
Stop the server again if necessary and confirm that the active line contains exactly the intended number. This catches edits made to a backup, a similarly named file, or a different server directory.

Check the panel’s effective setting
If you use a host panel, compare the panel field with the file. If they differ, the panel is likely the source of truth and may overwrite the file during startup.
Test with controlled connections
Have players join in stages rather than opening the server to a full group immediately. Record the point at which a new connection is refused and compare it with the configured value. Also test after a complete stop-and-start cycle, because a hot edit is not proof that the next launch will load the same configuration.

Distinguish a slot limit from other restrictions
A rejection can come from an allowlist, a ban, authentication, a full proxy, a firewall, or a host-side quota rather than max-players. Read the exact console or client message before changing the cap again. Raising the limit will not remove a ban or authorize an account that is not on an allowlist.
Troubleshoot a player limit that will not change
The value resets after restart
- Confirm that you stopped the process before editing.
- Check whether the panel regenerates
server.propertiesfrom a startup setting. - Make sure you saved the file in the server root and did not create a second extension such as
.txt. - Compare the file timestamp and contents after the server has fully stopped.
The server still uses the old number
- Verify that the launch command points to the directory you edited.
- Check for multiple instances, staging servers, proxy backends, or containers with separate configuration files.
- Confirm that the server completed a real restart rather than only reloading a panel page.
- Inspect startup output or the panel’s loaded configuration, if available.
The server refuses the value
- Use a plain integer with no spaces, quotes, commas, or units.
- For Java, stay within the documented 0-to-256 range described by the Minecraft Wiki.
- For Bedrock, use a positive integer as specified by Microsoft Learn.
- If a panel rejects the value, its provider-defined cap may be lower than the software’s documented range.
Players are rejected even though slots remain
Check whether the server is enforcing an allowlist, bans, authentication failures, network or proxy limits, or a host quota. Also verify that players are connecting to the intended address and port. The max-players value only controls the server’s simultaneous-player ceiling; it does not override other access controls.

Reduce the value to the last stable level, then investigate CPU, memory, network, and storage pressure while reproducing the busiest activity. A lower cap protects the players already online from overload; it is not a substitute for tuning the world, plugins, add-ons, or hardware.
Important limits and claims to treat cautiously
Java and Bedrock configuration files should be treated as separate sets even though the property name is shared. Use the reference and syntax for the edition you run rather than copying unrelated Java-only or Bedrock-only settings. A third-party reference claims that some cross-edition keys may be silently ignored, but that behavior was not confirmed in an official reference here, so do not rely on it as a troubleshooting method.
A retrieved third-party guide also claims that a Bedrock ignoresPlayerLimit flag in allowlist.json can bypass the cap when allow-list=true. Microsoft’s documented reference did not confirm that behavior. Do not promise administrators or other accounts a bypass based on that claim; verify behavior against the exact Bedrock version and host documentation before relying on it.
Likewise, an unverified summary says Java administrators can join a full server without counting against the cap. That exception is not established here and should not be used when planning capacity.
