To change the map immediately, run changelevel <mapname> in the Team Fortress 2 server console. To set the regular rotation, edit tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, placing one recognized map name on each line in the order you want. Do not add the .bsp extension. Save the file and the new order will be used at the next map change; saving it does not restart the current map.
Change the active TF2 map immediately
The changelevel command is the direct way to move a running server to another map. You need access to the dedicated-server console or an administrative console connection with permission to issue server commands.

Use the maps command to see whether the server recognizes the map you intend to load:
maps *For a shorter result, supply part of the name:
maps <partial name>The returned names are the names you should use in map commands and in the rotation file. Checking first catches spelling errors and confirms that the map is installed on this particular server.

2. Run changelevel
Enter the map name without .bsp:
changelevel cp_dustbowlThe server changes to the specified map immediately. Replace cp_dustbowl with any name shown by maps * or maps <partial name>. A map that is not present or is not recognized cannot be loaded simply by typing its expected filename.
3. Confirm the result
Watch the server console for the map transition and connect to the server again if your client is not moved automatically. If the command reports that the map is unknown, return to the maps check and copy the recognized name exactly.

For the standard TF2 dedicated-server workflow, the rotation is defined in tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, inside the server’s Team Fortress 2 installation directory. This is a plain-text file: the order of its entries is the default order in which maps are offered for subsequent changes.
1. Back up the existing file
Before editing, make a copy of the current mapcycle.txt. A backup lets you restore the previous rotation if a typo, accidental deletion, or unwanted reordering causes a problem.

2. Put one map on each line
Each line should contain one map name, with no .bsp suffix. For example:
cp_dustbowl
cp_gorge
ctf_2fort
pl_upwardIn this example, the server’s default sequence is Dustbowl, Gorge, 2Fort, then Upward. Add or remove lines to match the modes and maps you actually want available. Do not combine several names on one line; the file is line-oriented, so one line represents one entry.
3. Use names the server recognizes
Validate every new entry with maps * or a partial-name search before relying on it. The mapcycle file does not install maps; it only tells the server which recognized map names to use when changing maps.
4. Save the file and wait for a map change
Mapcycle edits take effect on the next map change. Saving the file while a round is in progress does not, by itself, reload or restart the current map. Allow the normal transition to occur, or use an administrative map change when you are ready to test, then verify that the following rotation behavior matches the order in the file.

Use Workshop maps in commands and rotations
Valve’s Team Fortress 2 update documentation states that Workshop map names can be used with map, changelevel, nextlevel, and mapcycle configuration commands. In practical terms, a Workshop map identifier can be placed in mapcycle.txt in the same one-name-per-line style, provided the server recognizes that identifier.
Validate a Workshop entry before adding it
- Obtain the map name exactly as the server expects it, rather than guessing from a display title.
- Run
maps *ormaps <partial name>in the server console. - Use the recognized result with
changelevel <mapname>for an immediate test. - If the test succeeds, add that same name as one line in
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt. - Wait for a later transition to confirm that the rotation file accepts the entry as well.
If a Workshop map does not appear in the server’s map listing, changing the text in mapcycle.txt will not make it available. Resolve the server’s Workshop installation or synchronization issue first, then repeat the name check.

changelevel and mapcycle.txt solve different problems:

A common operating pattern is to edit and validate the rotation first, then use changelevel only when you need a deliberate immediate move. The manual command is not a substitute for maintaining the file: future automatic transitions still depend on the saved mapcycle.

Test a new rotation without guessing
Use this controlled checklist whenever you change several entries or add a Workshop map:

- Copy the existing
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txtto a backup location. - Write the intended sequence, one map name per line and without extensions.
- Check every name with
maps <partial name>; usemaps *when you want the complete list. - Save the file in the server’s
tf/cfgdirectory. - Record the map that is currently active. The file will not alter that map just because it was saved.
- Use the server’s normal next-map process, or issue a controlled administrative change when an immediate test is acceptable.
- Observe the next transition and compare the resulting map with the order you entered.
- If the result is wrong, restore the backup, correct the specific line, and test the next transition again.
Testing the transition is important because a successful file save only proves that the text was written. The documented behavior is that the edited order is picked up on a later map change.
Troubleshoot maps that do not load or rotate
The console says the map is unknown
- Run
maps *and search withmaps <partial name>to see the exact recognized spelling. - Correct capitalization, underscores, and other characters to match the listed name.
- Remove
.bspif you entered a filename rather than a map name. - For a Workshop map, confirm that the server lists its identifier before putting it in the rotation.
The current map did not change after editing the file
This is expected if you only saved mapcycle.txt. The file is read for the next map change; it is not an immediate-change command. Use changelevel <mapname> when you specifically need to move now, or wait for the server’s next normal transition.
The rotation skips an entry or stops at a problem map
Check the file line by line against the output of maps *. A typo or an entry that is not installed cannot provide a valid destination. Remove or correct the unrecognized line, save the file, and verify the next transition. Keep the backup until the revised sequence has been observed in operation.

The edited order is not the order you expected
- Confirm that you edited the TF2 server’s own
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, not a similarly named file elsewhere on the machine. - Open the saved file again and check that each map occupies its own line.
- Remember that the current map may have been selected before your edit; judge the new order from a transition that occurs after the save.
- Check for another server instance if your machine hosts more than one TF2 installation. Each instance has its own installation directory and configuration files.
A Workshop map works manually but not in the rotation
Use exactly the identifier that succeeded with changelevel, place it on its own line, and wait for a subsequent transition. This separates a naming problem from a timing problem: a valid manual change confirms that the server recognizes the map, while the later transition confirms that the mapcycle file is being read.

You cannot issue the command
Verify that you are connected to the actual dedicated-server console or an administrative console path with command privileges. A game client console without server authority cannot be assumed to control the dedicated server. If you use a hosting control panel, locate its server-console function and follow that service’s permission model, while keeping the map names and file format described here.

The commands and file format are the same concepts either way, but the amount of work required to reach them differs. Self-hosting gives you direct responsibility for the server installation, configuration files, console, and updates. Managed hosting may expose those functions through a web panel, file manager, or provider console, so you should confirm access before choosing a plan.

For map administration specifically, the decisive question is not a headline feature list: it is whether you can reach the server console and edit the TF2 configuration directory. If either is restricted, ask how the provider expects customers to change the active map and upload or edit a mapcycle.
Best-practice mapcycle layout
A useful rotation is easy to audit. Keep the file’s order intentional, use only names confirmed by the server, and retain a backup before major changes. If you are experimenting with a new map, place it in a small test rotation rather than replacing a long production list all at once. That makes the next transition easier to interpret and makes rollback straightforward.
When documenting your own server, record which installation directory owns the file and which console method you use. This avoids a frequent operational mistake: changing a correct-looking file or issuing a correct-looking command against a different server instance.
