Magic Mouse controls are split across several macOS panels. Change pointer movement in Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click > Tracking speed. Change how quickly page content moves in System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Scroll speed. Change the direction of scrolling with System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click > Natural scrolling, and manage gestures from the Mouse settings page under Point & Click and More Gestures.

These are separate behaviors: increasing tracking speed does not make a page scroll faster, and changing Natural scrolling does not alter either speed setting. The instructions below apply to current macOS settings labels documented by Apple; labels or available gesture choices can differ by Mac, macOS release, and connected mouse.

Identify the control you actually need

Start by describing what feels wrong. A pointer that crosses the screen too slowly needs the tracking slider. A web page or document that moves too many lines with one finger movement needs Scroll speed. Content moving opposite to the direction of your finger needs Natural scrolling changed. An unwanted Mission Control action, page swipe, or Smart Zoom action is a gesture setting rather than a speed problem.

What you want to change Where to change it What it affects
Pointer tracking speed System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click > Tracking speed How far the pointer travels when you move the mouse
Scroll speed System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Scroll speed How quickly window content moves while you scroll
Scroll direction System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click > Natural scrolling Whether content follows your finger direction
Gesture actions System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click and More Gestures Secondary click, zoom, Mission Control, page swipes, and other available actions
Pointer acceleration System Settings > Mouse > Advanced How pointer response changes between slow and fast mouse movements

Apple’s detailed paths are documented in its Mouse settings on Mac and tracking, double-click, and scrolling speed guide.

#1 Best Overall
Apple Magic Mouse - White Multi-Touch Surface
  • Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
  • It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

Do not use a speed setting to solve a direction or command problem. A fast pointer can still scroll slowly, and a correctly tuned pointer can still trigger Mission Control if a two-finger tap is enabled. Identifying the symptom first prevents compensating in the wrong panel.

Before changing settings

Connect the mouse first

macOS exposes Mouse settings only when a wireless mouse is connected, or when you are using a Mac with a built-in trackpad. Turn on the Magic Mouse and connect it in System Settings > Bluetooth if it does not already appear. Apple states: “To change Mouse or Trackpad settings, you must have a wireless mouse or trackpad connected with your Mac, or be using a Mac with a built-in trackpad.”

If the mouse is disconnected, you may be looking at trackpad controls instead of mouse controls. Reconnect the mouse, return to System Settings, and select Mouse again before troubleshooting a missing slider. A wired connection is not required for the settings themselves, but the wireless mouse must be recognized by macOS.

Check which macOS controls you have

The exact set of gesture switches depends on the connected mouse and Mac. A USB-C Magic Mouse has an additional compatibility condition: Apple’s published gesture list requires macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later for the gestures listed for USB-C models. If a gesture is absent, verify the mouse model and macOS version rather than assuming the hardware is defective.

Available controls can also change after pairing a different mouse. Read the labels shown for the currently connected device instead of relying on screenshots from another Mac or an older macOS release.

Change Magic Mouse tracking speed

Use the Tracking speed slider

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Mouse in the sidebar.
  3. Open Point & Click.
  4. Move the Tracking speed slider.
  5. Move the pointer around the screen while adjusting it, then stop when ordinary movements feel controllable.

Tracking speed changes pointer travel, not scrolling. There is no universally correct slider position: desk size, display resolution, wrist movement, and whether you make precise selections or broad sweeps all affect the useful setting. Apple’s own guidance is to adjust the slider while moving the pointer so you can judge the result directly.

Understand pointer acceleration

macOS normally applies pointer acceleration. Apple describes it as making the pointer move more quickly when you move the mouse quickly and more precisely when you move it slowly. This lets a short, controlled movement select a small target while a faster sweep crosses more of a large display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that change in response is interfering with consistent muscle memory, open System Settings > Mouse > Advanced and turn Pointer acceleration off. Re-test the same pointer movements after changing the switch; acceleration and the Tracking speed slider are separate controls, so changing one does not reset the other. With acceleration disabled, the pointer response is more uniform across movement speeds, but you may need a different slider position for the same desk and display.

  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.

Choose a setting without guessing a number

Apple supplies a slider rather than a published numeric speed scale. Use repeatable movements to evaluate it: move from the center of the display to a corner, select a small menu item, and drag a window. If you routinely run out of desk space, increase tracking speed slightly. If the pointer overshoots small controls, reduce it or try disabling acceleration. These checks are practical ways to judge the setting; they are not a laboratory calibration or a guaranteed recommendation.

Give each change a few ordinary tasks before deciding. Switching repeatedly between very different slider positions can make a setting seem unfamiliar even when it is usable. If more than one person uses the Mac, remember that one tracking preference applies to the current macOS user account, so another account may feel different.

Make scrolling faster or slower

Change Scroll speed in Accessibility

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Select Pointer Control.
  4. Under Mouse Options, find Scroll speed.
  5. Move the slider and test it in a long web page or document.

This slider controls how quickly content moves as you scroll. It is intentionally located in Accessibility rather than beside Tracking speed in the main Mouse pane. If the pointer speed feels right but pages race past the section you want, leave Tracking speed alone and adjust only Scroll speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scroll speed is about the amount of content moved by a scrolling gesture; it does not make the mouse sensor sample movement faster and does not change the direction. If you use the Magic Mouse on more than one Mac, repeat this adjustment on each Mac because the preference belongs to the system where you change it.

Test in more than one app

Use a web page, a long document, and a settings window to check the change. Applications can interpret scrolling differently, and a short page may not reveal a difference. Test both a slow, deliberate finger movement and a longer movement before deciding that the new setting is too fast or too slow.

When testing, place the pointer over the content area rather than a sidebar or control that may respond differently. If only one application behaves unusually while others respond normally, the app’s own scrolling behavior may be involved; do not keep moving the system slider to correct a single-app difference.

Change the scrolling direction

Toggle Natural scrolling

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Select Mouse.
  3. Stay in Point & Click.
  4. Turn Natural scrolling on or off.

Natural scrolling changes the direction relationship between your finger and the content. With it enabled, content follows the direction of your finger movement in the way Apple calls “natural.” Turning it off reverses that relationship. This is a direction preference, not a speed adjustment: it will not change how far content moves per gesture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If scrolling feels wrong in both direction and distance, change Natural scrolling first, then adjust Scroll speed separately. Treating those as two decisions avoids compensating for a reversed direction by choosing an unnecessarily slow or fast speed. Test the direction in a long page immediately after toggling it so you do not confuse a successful change with a speed difference.

Configure or disable Magic Mouse gestures

Find the gesture switches

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse.
  2. Review the controls under Point & Click.
  3. Open More Gestures and review each listed action.
  4. Turn an available gesture on or off, or choose the offered gesture variation when macOS provides a choice.

macOS displays only the controls supported by the connected mouse and Mac. Therefore, two Magic Mouse owners can see different lists, especially when their mouse connectors or macOS versions differ. A switch that is absent cannot be enabled by changing Tracking speed or Scroll speed.

Know what each documented gesture does

Gesture Action Where it is useful
Secondary click on the right side Opens the contextual menu Right-click commands in Finder, apps, and webpages
One-finger scrolling Moves content vertically or horizontally as supported Documents, webpages, lists, and other scrollable views
One-finger double-tap Smart Zoom Zooms into a compatible page or document area
Two-finger double-tap Mission Control Shows windows and spaces for a high-level view of open work
Two-finger horizontal swipe Moves between full-screen apps Switching among full-screen spaces
One-finger horizontal swipe Moves between pages Back and forward page navigation where supported

Apple also describes 360-degree scrolling, secondary click, and two-finger page swipes in its Magic Mouse for iMac guide. If an action is disruptive—for example, an accidental Mission Control trigger while selecting text—turn off that gesture in the Mouse settings rather than changing pointer or scroll speed.

Gesture names describe the input, but the result can depend on the application. A horizontal page swipe may work in a browser or document viewer while doing nothing in an app that has no page-based navigation. Test a gesture in the app where you expect to use it before concluding that the control failed.

USB-C Magic Mouse compatibility

For Magic Mouse models with a USB-C port, Apple says the gestures in its published list require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. If you are running an earlier release, update macOS if your Mac supports it, then reconnect the mouse and check the Mouse pane again. If updating is not possible, the missing control is a compatibility limitation rather than a slider setting.

After an update, turn the mouse off and on or disconnect and reconnect it so macOS refreshes the device capabilities. This does not add unsupported gestures to an incompatible model, but it can make newly supported controls appear after the required software is installed.

Use zoom without changing ordinary scrolling

Apple documents a screen-zoom option that uses a Control-modified scroll gesture. To enable it, open System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom and turn on the option for using a scroll gesture with a modifier key to zoom. This is separate from the normal Scroll speed slider and from Smart Zoom. Enabling it gives you a temporary zoom command while leaving ordinary document scrolling behavior unchanged.

Because zoom changes the whole screen view, it can look like the pointer or page has moved unexpectedly. Check whether the display magnification changed before adjusting Tracking speed or Scroll speed. Release the Control key and perform an ordinary scroll to confirm that normal content movement is still configured as intended.

Fix jittery, lagging, or unresponsive tracking

A pointer moving at the wrong but consistent speed is a settings issue. A pointer that jumps, pauses, or ignores movement needs a connection and hardware check first. Increasing the Tracking speed slider cannot cure an intermittent signal or a sensor that is failing to read the surface.

Clean the sensor

  1. Turn the Magic Mouse over and inspect the sensor opening on its underside.
  2. Clean the area with a soft cloth.
  3. If using compressed air, follow Apple’s caution not to invert the can while spraying.
  4. Reconnect or wake the mouse and test movement again.

Dust or debris over the sensor can cause erratic tracking. Cleaning does not change any macOS setting, so return to the Tracking speed slider only after movement is stable. Avoid treating a dirty sensor by repeatedly changing acceleration; that can mask the symptom without removing its cause.

Check settings and Bluetooth conditions

  • Confirm the mouse is selected in System Settings > Mouse and that the Tracking speed is not at an unexpectedly low position.
  • Check for Bluetooth interference or a crowded wireless environment if movement pauses or becomes intermittent.
  • Move the mouse closer to the Mac temporarily to separate range problems from surface or sensor problems.
  • Test on a clean, suitable surface and compare slow and fast movements.

Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers cleaning the sensor, reviewing mouse settings, and checking Bluetooth interference in How to keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly.

When service may be necessary

If the mouse remains slow to respond after cleaning, checking settings, and investigating interference, Apple says service may be needed. Do not keep increasing Tracking speed to compensate for missed or delayed movement; that changes pointer distance but cannot repair an intermittent connection or failing sensor. Note whether the problem occurs on more than one surface or Mac, as that distinction can help a service technician isolate the mouse from the computer.

Adjust double-click speed separately

Double-click timing is another independent control. Open System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and adjust Double-click speed. This setting changes how close together two clicks must be for macOS to treat them as a double-click. It does not affect pointer tracking, scrolling distance, scroll direction, or gestures.

If ordinary clicks work but opening files or selecting text by double-click is unreliable, adjust this control rather than changing Tracking speed. Test it in Finder after each small adjustment. A slower double-click setting allows more time between clicks; it does not make the pointer move more slowly.

A reliable adjustment sequence

When several behaviors feel unfamiliar after pairing a Magic Mouse or moving to a new Mac, change one control at a time:

  1. Confirm the mouse is connected and visible under System Settings > Mouse.
  2. Set Tracking speed while moving the pointer between small and large targets.
  3. Decide whether Natural scrolling should match your preferred finger-to-content direction.
  4. Set Scroll speed in Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options and test long pages.
  5. Review Point & Click and More Gestures, disabling only actions you do not want.
  6. If movement remains erratic, stop tuning sliders and follow the sensor and Bluetooth checks.

This order separates pointer movement, content movement, direction, and gesture commands. It also makes it easier to identify which change solved a particular complaint. Write down the prior position mentally or with a screenshot if you are experimenting, so you can return to a known baseline.

Common reasons a setting is missing

  • The Mouse pane is absent or incomplete: reconnect the wireless mouse; macOS requires a connected wireless mouse for mouse settings to appear.
  • A gesture switch is not listed: available gestures vary by Mac and connected mouse. Check the model and macOS release, including the Sequoia 15.1 requirement for the listed USB-C model gestures.
  • You changed Tracking speed but scrolling did not change: use Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Scroll speed instead.
  • You changed Scroll speed but direction is still reversed: return to Mouse > Point & Click and change Natural scrolling.
  • The pointer still jumps after speed changes: treat it as a sensor, Bluetooth, or hardware problem rather than a calibration problem.
  • Only one gesture behaves differently: test it in an app that supports the action; not every application responds to every page or space gesture.

How do I stop accidental Mission Control or Smart Zoom?

Open System Settings > Mouse, review Point & Click and More Gestures, and turn off the unwanted gesture. Do not change pointer speed to solve an unwanted command.

Why are gestures missing on my USB-C Magic Mouse?

Apple’s published gesture list for USB-C Magic Mouse models requires macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. Check the macOS version, update if supported, and reconnect the mouse.

What should I do if the pointer jumps or lags?

Clean the underside sensor with a cloth, use compressed air only as Apple directs without inverting the can, review mouse settings, and check for Bluetooth interference. If it remains slow or erratic, service may be necessary.

Can I change double-click timing separately?

Yes. Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and adjust Double-click speed. It is independent of tracking, scrolling, direction, and gestures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I zoom the screen with the Magic Mouse?

Enable the Control-modified scroll gesture in System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. This screen zoom is separate from ordinary Scroll speed and Smart Zoom.

The Bottom Line

Use Mouse > Point & Click > Tracking speed for pointer travel, Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Scroll speed for content movement, and Mouse > Point & Click > Natural scrolling for direction. Manage actions in Point & Click and More Gestures. Connect the mouse before looking for controls, check macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later for listed USB-C gestures, and troubleshoot sensor cleanliness or Bluetooth interference when movement is erratic rather than merely too fast or too slow.
