To change Mafia III’s graphics or frame-rate limit on PC, start the game, open Options, choose Display, and adjust the available settings there. The PC patch documented three frame-rate choices—30 FPS, 60 FPS, and unlimited—while advising players to match the choice to the performance their computer can actually sustain. 2K’s October 2016 PC patch announcement places the frame-rate selector in the in-game display menu.
If performance is poor, begin by testing Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality one at a time. An older PCGamingWiki community report identified those options as relatively demanding on its test system, but the results are not a modern benchmark or a guarantee for every combination of graphics card, processor, resolution, driver and frame-rate target.
Open the correct graphics menu
- Launch Mafia III and continue to the main menu, or pause the game while playing.
- Open Options.
- Select Display.
- Change the frame-rate option and any other display or graphics controls shown in that menu.
- Apply or confirm the change if the game presents a confirmation prompt, then return to the game and check the result.
The in-game menu is the authoritative place to start. A PCGamingWiki settings report warns that changes made in a launcher may be ignored, so a launcher value that appears to do nothing should be followed by a check of Options > Display. The report’s advice is to configure the settings in the game itself.

Change the FPS cap: 30, 60 or unlimited
The documented PC patch added three choices: 30 FPS, 60 FPS and unlimited. Select the target in Options > Display, then judge the result by sustained performance and frame consistency rather than by the highest number displayed for a moment.

2K’s announcement says, “This patch includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options on PC,” and tells players to tailor the setting “to the power of your machine.” Those are the documented choices; the announcement does not establish a current hardware-specific recommendation. What Mafia III’s graphics controls change
A launch-era PC Gamer feature published in the Steam Mafia III news archive described global quality presets that changed eight core settings. It also discussed resolution, V-sync, fullscreen mode and an FPS limiter. Because that material dates from October 2016, treat it as a description of the launch menu and its broad visual trade-offs, not proof that every later build exposes exactly the same controls.

The launch-era feature reported that reflections, lighting and effects looked more visibly different between presets, while depth of field, motion blur and geometry detail produced relatively small performance differences on the reviewer’s hardware. Change one variable at a time and revisit the same demanding scene after each adjustment. That gives you a useful comparison instead of making several changes whose effects cannot be separated.
- Record your starting point. Note the current resolution, frame-rate choice and quality settings. If possible, observe the frame rate while driving through a busy area, turning the camera quickly and entering a scene with many lights or reflections.
- Test Volumetric Effects. Lower this setting, replay the same route and check whether frame-time spikes or sustained performance improve. Keep the lower value only if the visual loss is acceptable.
- Test Reflection Quality. Make the same comparison near reflective surfaces and wet streets. The PCGamingWiki report identifies reflections as a reasonable early target, but your GPU and resolution determine the actual result.
- Evaluate shadow quality, antialiasing and other effects. Reduce one setting, compare the same scene, and retain only changes that improve consistency enough to matter.
- Adjust resolution if necessary. This is a direct way to reduce the number of pixels rendered, but it changes image sharpness. Try it when quality reductions have not delivered the consistency you need.
- Choose the cap again. If the system now holds close to 60 FPS, select 60. If it still fluctuates substantially, test 30 for a steadier target. Use unlimited only after observing that the computer can deliver stable output under your normal play conditions.
Do not interpret a brief peak as proof that a target is sustainable. A setting that looks fast in a quiet area may fall sharply during driving, firefights, heavy weather or scenes with many lights. Your own repeatable comparison is more relevant than a historical preset ranking.

Global presets versus individual controls
If the menu offers global quality presets, use one as a starting point, then inspect the individual controls. A preset is convenient when you want a broad quality change, but it may lower options that have little effect on your particular bottleneck while leaving another expensive option higher than necessary.
For a targeted adjustment, preserve settings whose visual effect matters most to you and test the options with the strongest evidence of cost first: reflections and volumetric effects. The launch-era report’s observations about depth of field, motion blur and geometry detail can help you avoid spending time on changes that made little difference on its test system, but they should not be treated as measurements for your hardware.
Check whether your PC meets the posted requirements

2K specifically states that Intel HD 5500 and earlier integrated graphics do not meet the minimum requirements. Meeting the listed parts does not tell you whether a particular modern system will hold 60 FPS at a chosen resolution; drivers, thermals, background processes and in-game settings still affect performance.
Troubleshoot settings that do not stick
The launcher setting has no effect
Return to Options > Display after launching the game and make the change there. The PCGamingWiki community report says launcher changes may be ignored, so an unchanged result is not necessarily evidence that the frame-rate option is unavailable.

The game still performs poorly after lowering one option
Confirm that the change was saved, then test the same scene again. Continue through the one-setting-at-a-time order rather than lowering everything at once. Check resolution and the frame-rate cap after testing Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality, because a high pixel count or an unrealistic target can remain the limiting factor.

You cannot tell whether a change helped
Use a repeatable route and conditions. Compare the same camera movement, driving segment or busy area before and after the change. Look for sustained smoothness and fewer stalls, not only the maximum FPS number.
You need to inspect the stored video configuration
PCGamingWiki documents the Windows video configuration file at %LOCALAPPDATA%2K GamesMafia IIISavesvideoconfig.cfg. Treat this as an advanced troubleshooting reference. Before opening or editing the file, make a backup copy so you can restore the previous state. A practical decision framework
Choose settings by balancing three things: the visual feature you are willing to reduce, the frame rate your computer can sustain, and how consistent the frame delivery feels during demanding scenes.
- If you want the smallest visual compromise first: test Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality individually, then keep the setting that improves consistency without making the image unacceptable.
- If the game is close to a stable 60: use the 60 FPS option and make small quality reductions until demanding scenes no longer cause disruptive drops.
- If the game repeatedly falls below 60: test a 30 FPS cap rather than judging the system by short-lived peaks. A stable lower target can be preferable to large swings.
- If you select unlimited: observe the result over a full play session. The option removes the cap; it does not guarantee even frame pacing or a particular output.
- If the image becomes too soft: restore resolution before making further quality cuts, then test a different combination of effects and cap.
Because the detailed setting comparisons come from 2016-era sources, there is no responsible universal “best” preset for every current PC. The dependable method is to make the change in the game’s Display menu, compare a repeatable demanding scene, and keep only adjustments that improve the experience on your own system.

Quick checks before changing anything
Write down your current settings before experimenting, including resolution, preset, V-sync state and frame-rate choice. This gives you a known baseline and makes it easy to undo a change that hurts image quality. Test in a repeatable section of the game: a busy drive, a firefight, or an area with wet streets, strong lighting and many reflections. Quiet interiors can hide the drops that matter most during play.
Make only one change between comparisons and give the game enough time in the same scene to reveal sustained behavior. A higher instantaneous FPS number is not automatically better if frame delivery becomes uneven. Likewise, a lower preset is not automatically worthwhile if it removes a visual effect you value without fixing the slowdown. Keep a short note of each result so you can return to the best combination later.
What to do when no single setting fixes the problem
If lowering Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality does not provide the consistency you need, continue with shadows, antialiasing and resolution in separate tests. Recheck the frame-rate cap after every major change. A 60 FPS target that the system cannot hold can create more visible fluctuation than a stable 30 FPS choice, while unlimited can expose every performance swing instead of hiding it behind a ceiling.
Do not assume that meeting 2K’s listed requirements guarantees a particular result. Those specifications were posted in 2016 and updated on September 3, 2025; they identify a supported baseline, not a promise for a given modern display, driver or resolution. Your own repeatable comparison remains the deciding test.
