Change a DayZ item’s loot priority in the active mission’s db/types.xml: find the exact <type name="ItemClassName"> entry and edit its <cost> value. The Central Economy uses that value as a priority weight during respawn and cleanup, with higher values described as higher priority. Save valid XML, restart or reload the correct server instance, and allow later economy cycles before judging the result.

What “loot priority” means in DayZ

DayZ’s Central Economy manages item spawning, replacement and cleanup on the server. In an item definition, cost is the field used as the priority weight for those economy decisions. Raising an item’s cost makes it a higher-priority candidate relative to other entries when the economy performs its work; lowering it makes the item less urgent relative to entries with larger weights.

That setting is different from how many copies exist, where they may appear, or how full a magazine or bottle is. Those outcomes are controlled by separate fields. A successful priority change therefore may not produce an immediately visible pile of loot: the economy still considers current counts, minimum thresholds, cleanup state, restock timing and location rules.

The XML is server-side configuration. Players connecting to the server do not download the mission’s economy files and cannot inspect Central Economy state from the client. Make the edit on the machine or control panel that runs the server, then observe what happens in subsequent economy cycles.

Find the active types.xml file

DayZ can have several mission folders on one machine, especially when multiple maps or server instances are installed. Editing a dormant copy has no effect. The active mission is the one selected by the server’s serverDZ.cfg configuration.

Common mission locations

  • mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/ for Chernarus.
  • mpmissions/dayzOffline.enoch/ for Livonia.
  • mpmissions/dayzOffline.sakhal/ for Sakhal.

Host panels may place these folders under a provider-specific root, while a self-hosted installation may use the game server directory directly. Follow the mission path declared for the instance you are changing rather than assuming that the first matching folder is live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the file before editing

  1. Open the server’s serverDZ.cfg and identify the mission/map value used by that instance.
  2. Open the corresponding mission directory and then its db subdirectory.
  3. Verify that types.xml contains the item definitions for the running map and that its modification time changes when you save a test copy.
  4. If the host exposes multiple instances, note the instance name or port so the restart is applied to the same server whose file you edited.

Back up the mission and stop safely

Stop the server before changing the file, or use the host’s supported maintenance mode. A running process may hold an old copy in memory or overwrite your changes during shutdown. Copy the entire mission folder, or at minimum db/types.xml and any custom economy files, to a dated backup location.

Keep the original file unchanged until the new configuration has loaded successfully. A backup gives you a quick recovery path if the XML becomes malformed, a host update restores defaults, or a later change makes item behavior difficult to diagnose.

Change an item’s priority step by step

  1. Open the active file. In the mission selected by serverDZ.cfg, open db/types.xml with a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
  2. Search for the exact class name. Search the name attribute, such as AK74. Class names are exact; a display name, spelling variation or partial match can lead you to the wrong entry or no entry at all.
  3. Identify the complete type block. Work inside the matching <type> element and check that its category, usage and value tags describe the item you intended to tune.
  4. Edit only cost for a priority test. Replace the number between <cost> and </cost>. Changing one variable at a time makes the result attributable.
  5. Preserve the XML structure. Keep the opening and closing tags, the item name, flag attributes and classification elements intact. Do not insert comments or characters inside a numeric element unless your editor and server version explicitly support them.
  6. Validate the file. Check that every element is closed, numeric fields contain valid numbers, and the file remains well formed XML. Also retain a sensible relationship between nominal and min; the target count should not be lower than the replenishment threshold.
  7. Save and restart or reload. Use the host’s documented restart/reload operation for the same instance whose mission file you edited.
  8. Allow economy cycles to run. A restart loads the configuration but does not promise an instant spawn. The Central Economy may wait for counts, restock delays, cleanup and location conditions before the difference is visible.

Example type entry

<type name="AK74">
    <nominal>6</nominal>
    <lifetime>28800</lifetime>
    <restock>0</restock>
    <min>4</min>
    <quantmin>-1</quantmin>
    <quantmax>-1</quantmax>
    <cost>100</cost>
    <flags count_in_cargo="0" count_in_hoarder="0" count_in_map="1" count_in_player="0" crafted="0" deloot="0"/>
    <category name="weapons"/>
    <usage name="Military"/>
    <value name="Tier3"/>
</type>

In this example, 100 is the priority weight. For a controlled test, change that number and leave every other field unchanged. Once the behavior is understood, make separate edits for abundance, persistence or placement.

What each economy field controls

Field Role What changing it does not do
cost Priority weight used by the Central Economy during respawn and cleanup. Higher values are described as higher priority. It does not set the number of copies or override location classifications.
nominal Target number of copies the economy attempts to maintain on the map. It does not make an item higher priority.
min Count at or below which the economy attempts replenishment. It does not control magazine or bottle fill.
lifetime Seconds an untouched item remains before cleanup. It does not determine where an item is allowed to spawn.
restock Minimum delay before a replacement spawn attempt. It does not increase the target count.
quantmin and quantmax Percentage fill range for quantity-bearing objects such as magazines and bottles. They do not change the number of item instances.
category, usage and value Classification and location constraints used with the server’s limits definitions. They do not act as priority weights.
flags Determines which containers or locations count toward the economy’s item total, using attributes such as cargo, hoarder, map, player, crafted and deloot. It does not directly raise or lower cost.

Why changing nominal does not change priority

nominal answers “How many should the economy try to maintain?” It is a target abundance value. A larger nominal can result in more copies being maintained when the other conditions allow it, but it does not tell the economy which item to process first or favor during priority decisions. That role belongs to cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

min is another commonly confused field. It is the replenishment threshold: when the counted total reaches or falls below it, the economy can attempt to replace items. Raising min can make replacement attempts occur sooner, while changing cost changes the item’s relative priority. If you want to test priority, do not change either quantity field in the same edit.

Choose the right tuning strategy

Desired result Primary fields to adjust Reason
Make the economy favor an item during processing cost This is the priority weight.
Maintain more or fewer copies nominal Sets the target population.
Trigger replenishment at a different count min Defines the replenishment threshold.
Wait longer or shorter before replacement restock Sets the minimum replacement delay.
Keep untouched loot on the ground for a different period lifetime Controls cleanup timing for untouched items.
Change how full magazines or bottles are quantmin and quantmax These are fill percentages, not spawn counts.
Move an item to different kinds of locations category, usage, value and the matching limits definitions Classification tags constrain valid spawn locations.

Use the smallest edit that can produce the desired outcome. For example, increasing cost will not repair an item that has no valid usage or value classification for the intended buildings. Conversely, changing nominal will not make the economy select that item ahead of another one.

How to test a priority change without confusing variables

Use a single controlled change

Record the original values for the item, then alter only cost. Keep a simple log containing the server instance, map, class name, old value, new value, restart time and observations. This prevents a later change to nominal, lifetime or a location tag from being mistaken for the effect of priority.

Observe economy conditions, not one loot find

A single item found in a building is not enough to prove a priority change. Existing copies may already satisfy the target, a player inventory or storage container may count according to the flags, or the item may be waiting for a restock interval. Compare observations over multiple later economy cycles and use the same areas and server population when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a rollback point

If the server fails to load the mission or the resulting distribution is undesirable, restore the backup, validate the original XML and restart the affected instance. Revert before attempting another variable so that the next test has a known baseline.

Location tags can override your expectations

Priority does not override placement rules. The category, usage and value elements must use names recognized by the server’s limits definitions. An item with a high cost can still fail to appear in a particular building type if its classification does not permit that location.

  • 🎮 Collector's Item: Allows for CO/VS functionality for co-op action (cable included). CO/VS multiplayer technology allows two Pocket Players to be linked together for cooperative gameplay using the included CO/VS cable
  • 🎁 Konami Licensed Collectible: Includes arcade version of Contra and Super Contra

When an item appears in unexpected places, inspect those tags and the associated limits definitions before lowering or raising cost. Keep classification changes separate from priority changes so you can tell whether the problem is selection priority or an invalid placement constraint.

Modded items and update-safe configuration

For a modded class, first check the mod’s supported economy-file arrangement. Where the documentation supports it, place custom definitions in a separate economy file and register that file through cfgeconomycore.xml. This avoids replacing the vanilla types.xml unnecessarily and reduces the chance that a game or mod update will overwrite your edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the exact class name supplied by the mod. A display label shown in a trader or inventory is not necessarily the XML class name. After a mod update, confirm that the class still exists and that the registered custom file is loaded by the same server instance.

Troubleshooting a change that has no visible effect

The wrong file was edited

Recheck the mission path selected by serverDZ.cfg, the map folder and the server instance or port. Multiple copies of types.xml are common on hosts that run several maps. The active file is the one under the mission actually launched by that instance.

The class name does not match

Search for the exact name attribute, including capitalization and punctuation. If there is no matching type block, you may be editing a class that is not defined in that economy file or using a display name rather than the class name.

The server did not reload the file

Use the host’s full restart or supported reload procedure and confirm that it targeted the intended instance. A control-panel restart of a different server does not apply the edit you made.

The economy has not reached a decision point

Restarting loads the XML, but current counts, cleanup state and restock timing can delay the next attempt. Wait for later economy cycles instead of repeatedly changing the value after every short check.

The item is in the wrong places

Inspect category, usage, value and the corresponding limits definitions. Priority only affects relative economy processing; it does not grant permission to spawn in locations excluded by those classifications.

There are too few or too many copies

Adjust nominal, min, lifetime and restock for abundance, threshold, persistence and delay. Do not use cost as a substitute for a quantity setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magazines or bottles have the wrong fill level

Use quantmin and quantmax. These values describe the percentage range of the quantity inside an instance; they do not increase the number of instances spawned.

A mod update removed the edit

Check whether the update restored the vanilla file or changed the class name. Move supported custom definitions into the registered mod economy-file pattern through cfgeconomycore.xml, then validate and restart again.

XML and server-safety checks

  • Use a plain-text editor and preserve the file’s XML encoding.
  • Ensure every <type> element has a matching closing tag.
  • Keep numeric values numeric; remove accidental spaces or comments inside number elements if the server parser rejects them.
  • Retain valid flag attributes and recognized classification names.
  • Keep nominal greater than or equal to min.
  • Back up before each group of edits, especially before game or mod updates.
  • Apply changes to the server, not to a client-side copy of the game files.

Practical examples

Making a rifle more favored without increasing its target count

Find the rifle’s type block and raise only cost. Leave nominal, min, restock, lifetime and location tags unchanged. This tests relative priority while preserving the intended target abundance.

Keeping more rifles available

If the priority is acceptable but the map contains too few copies, change nominal and, if necessary, min after completing the priority test. This is an abundance adjustment, not a priority adjustment.

Making a bottle spawn with more liquid

For a quantity-bearing bottle, adjust the quantmin and quantmax percentages. Changing cost would affect economy priority but would not alter the liquid amount inside each bottle.

Allowing an item in military locations

Check that its usage, value and category names are valid for the server’s limits definitions. A larger cost cannot compensate for a classification that excludes military locations.

What server operators can and cannot infer from the result

The documented fields establish the direction of each setting, but they do not provide one universal “correct” cost number for every map, game build, player population or item. Treat cost as a relative tuning value and validate it on the target server version. A value that works for one economy configuration is not a guaranteed recommendation for another.

Likewise, a visible spawn immediately after a restart should not be interpreted as proof that the new cost alone caused it. Existing inventory, cleanup, thresholds, restock timing and location eligibility all participate in the result. Reliable tuning comes from controlled edits and observations across later cycles.

Quick reference checklist

  1. Identify the running mission through serverDZ.cfg.
  2. Back up that mission’s db/types.xml and custom economy files.
  3. Stop the server or enable its supported maintenance mode.
  4. Find the exact item class and edit only its <cost> value for a priority test.
  5. Validate XML, classifications, flags and the nominal/min relationship.
  6. Save, restart or reload the correct instance, and wait for later Central Economy cycles.
  7. If the outcome is wrong, diagnose file path, class name, reload, thresholds and tags before changing another field.

Final answer

To change loot priority, edit the item’s <cost> in the active mission’s db/types.xml; higher values represent higher priority in the Central Economy’s respawn and cleanup decisions. Use nominal and min for quantity, restock and lifetime for timing, quantmin/quantmax for item fill, and classification tags for location. Because the economy runs server-side and on scheduled cycles, a valid edit becomes observable only after the correct instance reloads and has time to process the new configuration.
