To make a Kindle book easier to read, open the book, tap the top edge of the screen, and select Aa (Page Display). Use Font for size, typeface, and boldness; Layout for spacing, margins, orientation, and alignment; and Themes for a saved combination of display choices. To change the front light, swipe down for Quick Actions or open Settings. The controls you see depend on your Kindle model, software, app, and the book’s format, so an existing device may have fewer options without being defective.
Start here: the Kindle reading controls
These steps apply to Kindle e-readers covered by Amazon’s current help instructions (6th Generation and newer), although Amazon notes that display settings vary across models. While reading:
- Open the book you want to adjust.
- Tap the top of the screen to reveal the reading toolbar.
- Tap Aa, labeled Page Display.
- Choose Font, Layout, or Themes, then change a setting and return to the book to assess it.
Amazon says display preferences apply across books on the Kindle, but the controls available in that menu vary by model. The official overview is Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display.

If you are asking, “How do I make the text bigger on my Kindle?”, start with the Font tab or the pinch gesture rather than the general device Settings menu. If you are asking, “How do I change the brightness on a Kindle?”, use Quick Actions or the light controls available while a book is open. Both changes can be made on an existing device; buying a newer Kindle is not required.

Change text size, typeface, and boldness
Use the Font tab
In Aa > Font, choose a larger or smaller text size, select one of the fonts offered by your device, and adjust boldness. Amazon documents five boldness levels. A size increase can reduce the number of words per page, while a smaller size shows more text but may be harder to scan; make small changes rather than jumping to an extreme.
Typeface choices and the number of size steps are not identical on every Kindle. If a font name or control shown in an online guide is absent, that normally reflects a model or software difference rather than a missing account feature. Try reading a full page after each change: a very large setting may create frequent page turns, while a slightly heavier weight may improve clarity without changing the page count as much.
Use the pinch gesture
When a book is open, pinch in or out on the page to change text size. This is a book-level control and is the practical fallback when you cannot find a separate device-wide font menu. Amazon’s instructions for enlarging text are in Enlarge the Font Size on Your Kindle E-Reader.

Some hardware has an additional setting that is separate from the in-book menu. On Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft, open Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size. If that path is not present, use the book’s Aa menu or pinch gesture instead; Amazon does not list the device-wide control for every generation.
This separate path should not be confused with the text-size choice in a particular book. The device-level option is available only on the eligible hardware listed above, while the in-book menu is the normal way to adjust an ebook. A guide showing Display & text size may therefore be accurate for one Kindle and irrelevant to another.
Improve spacing, margins, and page shape
Layout controls
Open Aa > Layout to look for the controls your Kindle provides:
- Line, paragraph, word, and character spacing: Increase separation when lines or words feel crowded; reduce it if pages look excessively fragmented.
- Margins: Narrow margins can put more words on a page, while wider margins create more white space around the text.
- Orientation: Switch between portrait and landscape where supported.
- Alignment: Choose the available text-alignment option if ragged or justified lines affect your preference.
Not every Kindle exposes every item in this list. Layout changes are most reliable in books that reflow to the screen; fixed-layout titles can ignore some or all of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpacing is worth changing independently from font size. If you lose your place between lines, a modest increase in line or paragraph spacing may help without making the type unusually large. If a chapter looks too sparse, reduce one spacing control at a time. Wider margins can make a page feel less crowded, but they also shorten each line and may lead to more page turns.
Orientation is useful when your hands, stand, or reading position favor a wider page. It is not guaranteed on every model or in every title. Alignment choices likewise depend on the device and book; a missing alignment control is not evidence that the reader is malfunctioning.

Save a comfortable combination with Themes
Aa > Themes lets you select a page background or a preset theme and, on supported models, save a combination of font, size, spacing, and other display choices. A saved theme is useful when you switch between a daytime setup and a higher-contrast or larger-type setup, because you can return to the combination without rebuilding each setting.
The available theme names, background colors, and save options depend on the Kindle generation. Treat the menu as a set of choices offered by that device, not as a universal catalog. If you do not see a Themes tab, use the Font and Layout tabs separately; the absence of Themes does not prevent those individual adjustments where the book supports them.
For example, you might save one theme with a larger type size and more line spacing for long evening sessions, then another with narrower margins for a book containing many charts. Check several pages after applying a theme, because headings, lists, footnotes, and illustrations can expose spacing problems that are not visible on an ordinary paragraph.
Adjust brightness, warmth, and dark mode
Open the light controls
- From the Home screen or Library, swipe down from the top to open Quick Actions, then choose Settings or use the brightness control shown there.
- When a book is open, tap the top of the screen to reveal the toolbar; compatible models expose light controls from that area as well.
- Move the brightness scale gradually, or tap the plus and minus buttons, until the page is clear without looking glaring.
Amazon’s model-specific instructions are in Adjust the Screen Light on Your Kindle E-Reader. Some e-readers also show a warmth control and Dark Mode. These are compatibility-dependent: if neither appears, your model or software may not support them. There is no single brightness or warmth value that is right for every reader or room, so adjust in the lighting where you actually read.
Change brightness after moving to the place where you normally read. A setting that looks comfortable in a bright room may feel too strong in a dark room, and a dim setting can make the page harder to distinguish in daylight. Increase or decrease it in small steps, then read for a few minutes before deciding. Warmth and Dark Mode are optional controls, not requirements for comfortable reading.
On a phone, tablet, or computer, the Kindle app’s brightness behavior is tied to that device’s display. It cannot add a front light to hardware that does not have one. On a Kindle e-reader, the front-light menu controls the integrated light only when that model includes it.

Amazon describes the Page Display preferences as applying across books on the Kindle, but the current book still has to support the requested change. A reflowable ebook can adapt its appearance to the screen size and your selected font and layout settings. A fixed-layout title preserves a designed page and may not permit those adjustments.
| Book type | What you can generally expect | Typical examples or clue |
|---|---|---|
| Reflowable | Font size and many layout choices can adapt to the Kindle screen. | Most standard novels and other text-first ebooks. |
| Fixed-layout | Text and page geometry may remain fixed, so size, spacing, or margins can have little or no effect. | Print replica books, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks. |
Check the title’s detail page for accessibility information before assuming a control is broken. Amazon explains the distinction in Learn About Accessibility Information for Kindle Books.
A fixed-layout book can still show an Aa menu, but a particular choice may not change the page. That is why testing the same adjustment in a regular reflowable novel is useful when troubleshooting. If the change works there, the first title’s format is the more likely explanation.

Kindle app settings on Android and iPhone/iPad
The Kindle mobile apps have their own display menu, so do not assume that an e-reader’s toolbar looks identical. In the Android or iOS app:
- Open a book.
- Tap near the top center of the screen to show the reading controls.
- Tap Aa.
- Open the tab containing the setting you want, then return to the page to check the result.
Amazon lists font size and type, spacing, and screen brightness among mobile Font controls. Depending on platform and version, Layout can include page color, Dark Mode, continuous scrolling, margins, alignment, and an orientation lock. Themes can provide preset or custom combinations. The complete platform-specific list is in Accessible Reading Options for Kindle Reading Apps.
A brightness slider in the app changes the app’s display behavior; it does not add a front-light capability to a phone or tablet. Conversely, an e-reader’s warmth control is not guaranteed to appear in the mobile app. Continuous scrolling is an app option on platforms that provide it, not a setting that every Kindle e-reader offers.
If you read the same book on an e-reader and in the app, check the display separately in each environment. A font or theme selected on one platform may not expose identical controls on the other. The absence of a setting in Android or iOS is usually a platform difference, not a problem with your Kindle account.
Kindle for Web, Windows, and macOS are different
Kindle reading software for a browser, Windows PC, and Mac has separate menus and control sets. Amazon’s help page documents different options for each platform, so an instruction written for Android or iOS may not match the desktop interface. Look for the in-book Aa or display menu first, then use the labels shown by that platform. If a setting is absent, it is safer to treat it as unsupported on that version than to assume an account problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Reading environment | Where to begin | Why the menu may differ |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-reader | Open book, tap top edge, choose Aa. | Model generation determines available font, light, warmth, and theme controls. |
| Kindle app for Android or iOS | Open book, tap top center, choose Aa. | Platform-specific options can include continuous scrolling, page color, and orientation lock. |
| Kindle for Web, PC, or macOS | Open the book and open that platform’s display menu. | Amazon lists a different control set for each desktop or web experience. |
Desktop and browser readers also use the screen settings provided by the computer. If text looks dim or overly bright there, check the operating system’s display controls in addition to the Kindle menu. Do not expect a desktop app to reproduce an e-reader’s front-light, warmth, or Dark Mode controls exactly.
A practical order for tuning comfort
There is no universal best font, contrast, brightness, or warmth setting in Amazon’s documentation. The following order limits the number of variables you change at once:
- Set text size first. Choose a size that lets you read without leaning toward the screen.
- Adjust boldness and typeface. If letters look faint, try a higher boldness level before making the text very large.
- Set line and paragraph spacing. Increase separation if you frequently lose your place between lines.
- Set margins and alignment. Choose the page width and line shape that make scanning easiest.
- Set the page background or theme. Use the background choices available on your model.
- Match the light to the room. Start with a moderate brightness and change it after your eyes have adjusted; check warmth or Dark Mode only if your device offers those controls.
Read several pages after each change. A setting that looks pleasant on a single screen can feel cramped or too sparse after a chapter, especially when the book contains headings, lists, or illustrations. If a change makes the page worse, return to the previous value rather than changing several other controls at once.
Comfort is personal and can change with the room, the time of day, and the book format. These controls are preferences, not medical treatment, so avoid assuming that one font, color, or brightness level will suit every reader.

Troubleshooting missing or ineffective settings
| Symptom | What to check | Likely explanation or fix |
|---|---|---|
| Aa is missing | Confirm that a book is open, then tap the top edge (e-reader) or top center (mobile app). | The reading toolbar is hidden until the page is tapped. If it still does not appear, verify that you are using the platform-specific reading view. |
| Text size changes in one book but not another | Open the title’s detail page and review its accessibility information. | The second title may use a fixed layout, such as print replica, manga, comics, or some children’s books and textbooks. |
| Warmth or Dark Mode is absent | Check the model’s Quick Actions and Page Display menus. | Amazon limits these controls to compatible e-readers; they are not present on every Kindle. |
| Display & text size is not in Settings | Look under Settings > Screen and brightness. | The separate device-level font-size path is documented for 11th Generation and later e-readers, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. Use in-book Aa or pinch resizing on other models. |
| Brightness control seems to do nothing | Check whether you are adjusting an app display or an e-reader front light, and try Quick Actions. | Phones, tablets, and computers have screen brightness controlled by their operating system; only supported e-readers have an integrated front-light setting. |
| Layout options are fewer than an online guide shows | Compare the guide’s platform and Kindle generation with yours. | Amazon explicitly documents different control sets by model and app. Missing options are often a compatibility difference. |
If the toolbar remains hidden, tap once near the upper edge rather than repeatedly tapping inside the text. On a mobile app, use the top center area described in its controls. If a menu appears but a title ignores the change, test a reflowable book before changing device settings or purchasing hardware.
Accessibility details worth checking before changing devices
Changing settings does not require buying a new Kindle. First check the controls already available on your e-reader or app and the accessibility information for the specific book. A newer model may add a device-wide font-size path, warmth, or other controls, but Amazon does not claim that every model supports every feature. If the book itself is fixed-layout, replacing the device may still not make its page text reflow.
No accessory, replacement part, repair tool, subscription, or other purchase is needed to try these display adjustments. A newer e-reader can offer a different feature set, but the reason to upgrade should be a feature you actually need, not the assumption that every Kindle has the same menus.
For readers who switch between devices, remember that an e-reader, mobile app, and desktop app can expose different options even when they open the same book. Apply the adjustment in the environment where you read, and confirm the result on that screen rather than relying on a setting name from another platform.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make the text bigger on my Kindle?
Open the book, tap the top edge, choose Aa, and increase the size under Font. You can also pinch out on the page. The separate Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size path is listed for Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft.
How do I change the brightness on a Kindle?
Swipe down from the top of the Home screen or Library to open Quick Actions, then use the brightness scale or plus and minus controls. While reading, tap the top of the screen for the available light controls. The exact controls depend on the model.
Why can’t I find the Aa button?
Make sure a book, rather than the Home screen or Library, is open. Tap the top edge on an e-reader or near the top center in the mobile app to reveal the toolbar. If the button is still absent, the platform or reading view may use a different display menu.
Can I change the font in every Kindle book?
Reflowable books generally adapt to your selected font and layout. Fixed-layout books, including print replica titles, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks, may preserve their designed page and ignore some controls.

Do Kindle settings apply to every device where I read?
Page Display preferences can apply across books on a Kindle e-reader, but the available controls differ by model. Android, iOS, web, Windows, and macOS apps also have their own menus, so check and adjust each reading environment separately.
What should I do if a book ignores my spacing or margin changes?
Check the book’s detail page for accessibility information. If it is fixed-layout, the page geometry may not be adjustable. Test the same setting in a standard reflowable ebook to distinguish a book-format limitation from a device problem.
Do I need to buy a new Kindle for more comfortable reading?
No. Start with the Aa menu, pinch resizing, and the light controls on the device you already own. Consider another model only if you specifically need a feature that your current Kindle does not provide, such as a listed device-wide font-size setting, warmth, or Dark Mode.
