For the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, the supported software route is 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2. Use it to configure key assignments, macros, selected disabled functions and firmware updates. The keyboard can also support hardware-based shortcuts through its programmable Dual Super Buttons, but the exact button sequence for the Xbox Edition must be taken from that model’s own manual rather than assumed from the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard guide.
This guide separates confirmed Xbox Edition information from procedures that still require a manual check, explains the Windows 11 lighting fix documented by 8BitDo, and shows how to choose a wired, 2.4G or Bluetooth connection while configuring the keyboard.

What you need before changing settings
- The keyboard and, if you intend to use wireless 2.4G, its included adapter.
- A compatible computer or mobile device. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Android 9.0 or later as product compatibility targets.
- For desktop configuration, Ultimate Software V2. The download listing specifies Windows 10 and later for Windows and macOS 13.0 and later for macOS.
- A USB cable if you are updating firmware or need a wired connection for a feature that requires it.
- The Xbox Edition manual from the product’s support page whenever a physical key combination is involved.
The Xbox Edition package is listed as including the keyboard, Dual Super Buttons, a 2.4G adapter, USB cable, instruction manual and stickers. Keep the manual available because the search information for this model does not establish every key-by-key mapping sequence.
Use Ultimate Software V2 for programmable settings
8BitDo describes Ultimate Software V2 as its configuration tool for supported devices. For this keyboard, the manufacturer identifies it as the route for key mapping, macros, selected disabled key functions and firmware updates. The exact controls displayed can vary by device and software release, so use the Xbox Edition support page to confirm that the current download recognizes your keyboard.
Step 1: Install the current application
- Open the official Xbox Edition support page and follow its Ultimate Software V2 download link.
- Choose the installer for your operating system. The software listing states Windows 10 and above and macOS 13.0 and above; the support page also lists platform options for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
- Install the application, then launch it with the keyboard ready to connect.
The platform list is not proof that every keyboard function works on every listed operating system. If a control is missing, use the Windows or macOS desktop version and connect by USB before treating the function as unavailable.
Step 2: Connect the keyboard in a configuration-friendly way
- For the most predictable first setup, connect the keyboard with USB.
- If you prefer wireless operation, insert the included 2.4G adapter or pair over Bluetooth 5.0 according to the keyboard’s manual.
- Open Ultimate Software V2 and select the detected Retro 87 Xbox Edition. If more than one supported device is attached, verify the model name before changing anything.
A wired connection is especially important for firmware work and for the Windows Dynamic Lighting support added in firmware version 1.05. Do not interrupt USB power while the application is writing firmware.

Step 3: Change a key assignment
- Open the keyboard’s key-mapping page in Ultimate Software V2.
- Select the physical key you want to change.
- Choose the replacement keyboard function offered by the Xbox Edition profile, then save or apply the profile using the control shown by the application.
- Press the key in a text field or game after applying the profile. Confirm the result before changing several keys at once.
8BitDo confirms key mapping as a software capability, but the available replacement functions and the precise on-screen labels for the Xbox Edition are not established in the available product information. If a key or option is not shown in the device profile, do not assume that a hidden shortcut exists.
Step 4: Add a macro
- Open the macro section for the keyboard profile.
- Create a macro and record or enter the sequence using the controls Ultimate Software V2 presents.
- Assign the saved macro to a programmable key if the Xbox Edition profile offers that destination.
- Apply the profile and test the macro in a safe text editor before using it in a game or other application.
The manufacturer describes Ultimate Software V2 as supporting macros and describes the Dual Super Buttons as programmable for macros or other functions. The software does not make every possible macro behavior universal across operating systems; test timing, modifier keys and application compatibility on the system where you will use them.
Step 5: Disable a key function when the profile exposes that option
Ultimate Software V2 is documented as supporting the disabling of certain key functions. Select the relevant key or function, choose the disable option shown in the Xbox Edition profile, apply the profile and test the result. Because the documentation does not provide a complete Xbox Edition settings list, treat the options visible in your installed profile as authoritative for that release.
Choose the right connection while configuring
| Connection | What 8BitDo lists | Best use during setup | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB wired | Wired USB connection | Firmware updates, first configuration and Windows Dynamic Lighting | Firmware 1.05 added Windows Dynamic Lighting Effects support for wired connections; configuration requires the latest Ultimate Software V2. |
| Wireless 2.4G | Included 2.4G adapter | Normal wireless desktop or console use when the adapter is convenient | The available information does not establish that every Ultimate Software V2 function works over 2.4G. |
| Bluetooth 5.0 | Bluetooth connection | Bluetooth-compatible computers or Android devices | The product is listed for Windows 10 version 1903 and later and Android 9.0 and later; configuration-feature support can vary by platform. |
If the application cannot see the keyboard, switch to USB before reinstalling software. A wired connection removes pairing and adapter variables and is the required context for the documented Windows Dynamic Lighting feature.

Fix the documented Windows 11 lighting-control problem
8BitDo’s Windows 11 troubleshooting FAQ asks why keyboard lighting control does not work and why the software can appear unresponsive. Its specific answer is to set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB in Ultimate Software V2.
- Connect the keyboard by USB.
- Open Ultimate Software V2 and select the Xbox Edition.
- Find the lighting-control mode and choose 8BitDo RGB.
- Apply the setting, close and reopen the lighting controls, then test brightness or effect changes.
This is a targeted fix for the lighting-control issue described in the FAQ. It is not evidence that selecting 8BitDo RGB resolves every cause of an unresponsive application. If the software remains unresponsive, follow the connection and firmware checks below.
Hardware mapping and the Dual Super Buttons
The Xbox Edition includes programmable Dual Super Buttons. 8BitDo says these buttons can be assigned macros or other functions without software. That makes them useful when you want a dedicated action without changing the normal 87-key layout.
However, the detailed fast-mapping sequence available in the supplied material comes from the manual for the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard, not a confirmed Xbox Edition manual. That standard guide describes entering fast-mapping mode, holding one or more keys to assign, pressing the programmable key to finish, assigning up to six keys, automatic exit after eight seconds without activity and clearing fast mappings by holding the fast-mapping button for five seconds.

- Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
- 87-key layout. Kailh Box Switch V2 White. Dye-sub PBT keycaps.
- Top mount style. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
- Dual Super Buttons - offer large, programmable keys. Map anything to the Super Buttons instantly without using software.
- Classic power status LED, with independent control panel.
Do not present that sequence as guaranteed for the Xbox Edition. Before using any hold-and-press combination, open the Xbox Edition manual linked from its support page and verify:
- Which key or button enters fast-mapping mode.
- Whether the Xbox Edition accepts one key or several keys in a single assignment.
- The maximum number of keys in one assignment.
- How long the mode remains active without input.
- Which control clears an existing fast mapping.
If the Xbox Edition manual confirms the same sequence, follow its wording exactly. If it differs, the Xbox Edition manual takes precedence over the standard keyboard guide.
Update firmware safely
Ultimate Software V2 is documented as supporting firmware updates. Use the Xbox Edition support page to identify the current package and release notes before updating. The listed history includes these changes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Firmware entry | Change described by 8BitDo | Setup implication |
|---|---|---|
| v1.07 | Optimized abnormal volume-knob performance and input accuracy | Useful when those behaviors match the problem you are seeing. |
| v1.06 | Optimized key-input latency | Relevant to delayed or inconsistent key response. |
| v1.05 | Added Windows Dynamic Lighting Effects support for wired connections | Requires configuration with the latest Ultimate Software V2. |
These are version-history statements from the official support listing, not a guarantee that v1.07 is the newest release on the day you read this. Check the support page for a later package.

Troubleshoot mapping, detection and lighting
| Symptom | Checks to make | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard is not detected | Confirm the model, reconnect USB, try another USB port and close duplicate configuration applications. | Retry with USB before testing 2.4G or Bluetooth. |
| Lighting controls do nothing on Windows 11 | Use the wired connection and inspect the lighting mode. | Set the mode to 8BitDo RGB as specified by the official FAQ. |
| Software appears unresponsive | Check whether the problem is limited to lighting controls, then reconnect by USB. | Apply the lighting-mode fix only to the documented lighting issue; do not treat it as a universal repair. |
| Mapping saves but the key behaves normally | Verify that the correct device profile is selected and that the change was applied. | Test one key at a time and check whether the selected function is available in the Xbox Edition profile. |
| Macro works in the editor but not in an application | Check modifier order, timing and whether the application accepts synthetic input. | Retest in a plain text field, then consult that application’s input rules. |
| Dynamic Lighting options are missing | Confirm a wired connection and review the installed firmware. | Firmware 1.05 introduced the feature for wired connections; use the latest software and current support package. |
Operating-system and feature boundaries
8BitDo lists the keyboard as designed with Xbox and compatible with Windows and Android. Its support page lists software options for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, while the Ultimate Software V2 download listing specifies Windows 10 and above and macOS 13.0 and above. These statements establish platform availability, not identical feature coverage.
For a Windows or macOS computer, use the desktop application and USB for the broadest troubleshooting path. On Android or iOS, first confirm that the current support-page software identifies the Xbox Edition and exposes the setting you need. If a control is absent, do not infer that the keyboard is defective; the available documentation does not promise that every mapping, macro, lighting or firmware function is exposed on every platform.
Changing switches is separate from changing mappings
The product page says the keyboard PCB is hot-swappable. That means the board is designed for switch replacement, but the available specification does not identify compatible replacement switch models. Do not buy a particular switch based only on the hot-swap claim; verify the socket and physical compatibility in the Xbox Edition documentation first.

A practical setup sequence
- Identify the keyboard as the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
- Download Ultimate Software V2 from the Xbox Edition support page.
- Connect by USB and select the matching device profile.
- Make one key-mapping change and test it.
- Add macros or disable functions only where the profile provides those controls.
- Set Windows 11 lighting mode to 8BitDo RGB if lighting control is the reported problem.
- Review the support page for firmware updates, then update over USB if the release note addresses your symptom.
- Use the Xbox Edition manual for every physical fast-mapping or Dual Super Button sequence.
- After configuration, switch to 2.4G or Bluetooth and verify that the saved behavior remains available in your intended setup.
What the available documentation does not establish
The published product and support information does not provide a complete button-by-button map of the Xbox Edition, a definitive list of every setting shown in its profile or proof that the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard fast-mapping procedure is identical. Those details should come from the Xbox Edition owner’s manual and the device profile in the current Ultimate Software V2 release.
That limitation does not prevent normal configuration: use Ultimate Software V2 for documented software features, use USB for updates and Windows Dynamic Lighting, and treat the model-specific manual as the authority for hardware shortcuts.
