Rust controls automatic world saves with the server.saveinterval convar, measured in seconds. To save every 15 minutes, for example, set server.saveinterval 900. Enter that command in the F1 console or through RCON for a live change, or place the setting in server.cfg or your startup parameters so it is applied after every restart.

The practical choice is a trade-off: shorter intervals limit progress lost after a crash, while longer intervals can reduce periodic save-related stutter on servers with large save files. Rust’s default is not confirmed by an official source, so check the value on your own server instead of assuming that a provider’s guide is current.

What server.saveinterval controls

server.saveinterval is the number of seconds between automatic server saves. A save records the current persistent world and player-related state so it can be loaded after a normal restart. The setting does not define how long a wipe lasts, how often a server restarts, or how frequently backups are copied to another location. It controls the cadence of Rust’s automatic save operation.

Command Meaning Example result
server.saveinterval 60 Save approximately every 60 seconds One-minute interval
server.saveinterval 300 Save approximately every 300 seconds Five-minute interval
server.saveinterval 600 Save approximately every 600 seconds Ten-minute interval
server.saveinterval 900 Save approximately every 900 seconds Fifteen-minute interval
server.saveinterval 1800 Save approximately every 1,800 seconds Thirty-minute interval

The value is expressed in seconds, not minutes. Convert the interval before entering it: multiply minutes by 60. For example, 20 minutes is 1200 seconds and 45 minutes is 2700 seconds.

Change the interval immediately with the F1 console

A live change is useful when you are diagnosing stutter, preparing for a busy event, or testing a different interval without restarting the server. You must have administrator or moderator access that allows convar changes.

  1. Join the server with an account that has the required administrative permission.
  2. Open Rust’s F1 console.
  3. Enter the convar followed by the desired number of seconds. For a 15-minute interval, type server.saveinterval 900.
  4. Submit the command and leave the console.
  5. Check the value by entering server.saveinterval without a number. The console should return the server’s current value.

The live command changes the running process. It does not necessarily create a permanent configuration entry. If the server is restarted and the value was not also placed in a persistent configuration, the setting may return to whatever value the startup configuration supplies.

Change it through RCON

RCON is appropriate when you administer a remote server and do not want to join the game. Connect with an RCON client or your host’s console panel, authenticate with an account that can change server convars, and submit the same command:

server.saveinterval 900

To read the active value, send server.saveinterval with no argument. Run the read command after changing the setting rather than relying on the client’s success message; this confirms what the server accepted. If the response is unchanged, check that you connected to the intended instance and that your RCON identity has permission to modify convars.

Make the setting survive restarts

Option 1: add it to server.cfg

For a persistent configuration, add one line to the Rust server’s server.cfg file:

server.saveinterval 900

  1. Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration files. This avoids competing writes and makes it clear which process will read the change.
  2. Open the server.cfg associated with the server instance you intend to change. A host can run multiple instances, each with a different identity and configuration path.
  3. Add or edit one line containing server.saveinterval and the value in seconds. Keep only the intended value if the file already contains the same convar more than once; duplicate entries make later troubleshooting harder.
  4. Save the file as plain text without changing its filename or extension.
  5. Start or restart the server.
  6. After it is online, query server.saveinterval in RCON or the local console to verify that the running process loaded the file.

The exact directory for server.cfg varies with the installation method, operating system, host panel, and server identity. Do not assume that a similarly named configuration belonging to another instance is the right one. If the value does not load, use the panel’s documented configuration path or inspect the startup parameters for the configuration directory being used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 2: add it to startup parameters

You can also set the convar when the server process starts. Rust startup parameters commonly represent convars with a plus sign, for example:

+server.saveinterval 900

Use the parameter format required by your launcher or hosting panel; some panels provide separate fields for convar names and values rather than a free-form command line. Save the startup configuration, restart the instance, and query server.saveinterval after startup. If both startup parameters and server.cfg define the convar, keep the configuration intentional and verify which value the process ultimately reports.

How to choose a save interval

There is no single best number for every Rust server. The right value depends on how much progress your community can tolerate losing after an unexpected crash and whether saves produce noticeable pauses on your hardware and map.

Short intervals

A short interval, such as 60 or 300 seconds, reduces the maximum time between automatic saves. If the process crashes immediately before a save, less recent progress is potentially missing from the last completed save. The trade-off is more frequent save work, which can make periodic stutter more noticeable, particularly when the server has a large save file or many active entities.

Medium intervals

Values such as 600 or 900 seconds are practical starting points when you want a balance between recovery exposure and save frequency. A 900-second setting means the scheduled interval is 15 minutes; it does not guarantee that every crash loses exactly 15 minutes, because the amount of missing progress depends on when the previous save completed and what other events occurred.

Long intervals

A longer interval reduces how often the save operation runs and may reduce periodic interruptions. The cost is a larger recovery window: an unexpected shutdown can discard more work made since the last successful save. Long intervals are therefore a poor fit for communities that prioritize minimizing rollback after crashes.

Priority Direction to consider Reason
Minimize potential rollback Shorter interval More frequent saves leave less time between completed saves.
Reduce periodic save work Longer interval Fewer save operations are scheduled during a given period.
Balance both concerns Start at a moderate value such as 600–900 seconds Adjust after observing actual behavior on your server.

Change one variable at a time and observe the server through a normal play period. Record the old value, the new value, when it was changed, and whether players noticed stutter or rollback. This gives administrators a useful history when deciding whether to keep or revert the setting.

What is Rust’s default save interval?

Published third-party hosting guides disagree. Some report 600 seconds (10 minutes), others report 300 seconds (5 minutes), and others report 60 seconds. The years of those claims are not consistently stated, and no official Facepunch statement confirming one of those values was verified for this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reported value Equivalent time Evidence status
60 seconds 1 minute Reported by some third-party hosting guides; not officially confirmed.
300 seconds 5 minutes Reported by some third-party hosting guides; not officially confirmed.
600 seconds 10 minutes Reported by some third-party hosting guides; not officially confirmed.

Because these figures conflict, the reliable method is to query your own server with server.saveinterval and treat that response as authoritative for the running build and configuration. Rust updates, launchers, and host templates can change defaults or override them.

Force a save immediately

Community administration guides commonly describe server.save as a command that requests an immediate save:

server.save

This command was not verified against a fetched official Facepunch page. Treat it as an operational aid rather than a substitute for a tested backup process. If you use it, run it from the local console or RCON with the appropriate permission and watch for the server’s response. Do not assume that issuing the command proves that an external backup, snapshot, or copy has completed.

Verify that the change really took effect

Verification should be part of every change, whether it was made in F1, RCON, server.cfg, or startup parameters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Query server.saveinterval without a value in the running server’s console.
  2. Confirm that the returned number matches the intended seconds conversion.
  3. If you edited a file, check that the file belongs to the same server identity and installation that is currently online.
  4. Restart during a planned maintenance window and query the value again. A setting that works live but disappears after a restart is not persistent.
  5. Keep a note of the verified value and the date of the change so another administrator can understand the configuration later.

Troubleshooting common problems

The command is rejected or has no visible effect

Make sure the command is spelled exactly as server.saveinterval, use a plain integer in seconds, and remove extra punctuation. Confirm that you are connected to the correct server console rather than a client-only console or a different instance. Administrative permissions are required for changing the value.

The value changes, then reverts after a restart

A live console change is temporary unless it is also represented in persistent configuration. Add the line to the correct server.cfg or startup parameters, restart, and query the value again. If it still reverts, look for a control panel template or launch script that rewrites settings during startup.

Players report a pause during saves

First confirm the active interval instead of guessing which setting is in use. If saves coincide with noticeable pauses, test a longer interval in a controlled period. This can reduce how often the save operation occurs, but it increases the potential rollback window after a crash. Monitor player feedback and server behavior rather than changing several performance settings simultaneously.

A crash caused more rollback than expected

Check the last confirmed save interval and the time of the previous successful save if your logs expose it. A longer interval naturally leaves more time for unsaved progress to accumulate. Reducing the interval can narrow that exposure, but it cannot prevent every loss from an abrupt failure. Planned restarts and independent backups address different failure modes and should not be confused with the autosave interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server reports a value different from the one in the file

Look for duplicate definitions in server.cfg, startup parameters that override the file, or a panel setting that regenerates the configuration. Remove ambiguity, restart, and query the live value. Always troubleshoot the running value first; the text you expect to be loaded is less important than what the process reports.

A safe change procedure for administrators

  1. Decide the recovery-versus-stutter priority for this server.
  2. Convert the desired interval to seconds.
  3. Record the current value with server.saveinterval.
  4. Apply the new value live with F1 or RCON if you need an immediate test.
  5. Observe normal activity long enough to identify whether save-related pauses change.
  6. Persist the chosen value in the correct server.cfg or startup parameters.
  7. Restart at a planned time and verify the value again.
  8. Document the final value, the configuration location, and the reason for the choice.

For example, an administrator who wants a 15-minute cadence can test server.saveinterval 900 through RCON, query the value to confirm it, then place server.saveinterval 900 in the instance’s persistent configuration and verify it again after a restart.

Key points to remember

  • The convar is server.saveinterval.
  • Its unit is seconds.
  • F1 and RCON apply a live change when you have sufficient administrative permission.
  • server.cfg and startup parameters are the persistence options.
  • Shorter intervals reduce the time between saves but can increase save-related work and stutter.
  • Longer intervals reduce save frequency but can increase progress lost after an unexpected shutdown.
  • Conflicting third-party reports mean you should query your own server rather than assume a default.
