There are two different gravity systems in Space Engineers. To change a planet’s natural gravity, stop the server and edit the world save’s SurfaceGravity value for the correct planet. To create a local field around a ship or station, place a Gravity Generator or Spherical Gravity Generator and configure it from the block’s Control Panel. The dedicated-server panel and in-game Admin Screen do not replace a save-file edit when the planet value is not exposed as a normal setting.
First decide which gravity you need
The correct procedure depends on whether you want to alter a planet everywhere or create gravity in a limited build area.

Changing the natural gravity of a planet is a world-data operation. It is not the same as turning on a generator, and changing a generator does not alter the planet’s saved value.
Prepare the server before changing a world save
Save edits should be made while the server is offline. A running process can overwrite the file you are editing or leave the world in an inconsistent state.

- Stop the dedicated server completely; do not edit the file while it is still running.
- Make a local backup of the entire active world save. Keep the untouched copy until the new gravity has been tested.
- Confirm which world the server actually loads. A host can have several saves, and editing an inactive directory will produce no visible change.
- Have a plain-text editor available. The save is XML-like text, so a program that preserves the original characters and line endings is preferable.
- Record the original gravity value before replacing it. That gives you a precise rollback value even if you do not restore the whole backup.
Do not begin by changing a random number in a configuration file. First identify the planet and the active save, then change only the matching value.
Change a planet’s natural gravity in the save
The following sequence reflects a documented hosted-server workflow. The example layout uses /home/container/config/Saves/World and the file SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs. Your host may use a different root directory or save name, but the identification process is the same.
1. Stop the server and locate the active world
Use the host’s stop control or the server console, then wait until the process has exited. Open the file manager or SFTP location for the world that is selected as the server’s current save. In the example layout, navigate to /home/container/config/Saves/World.
If more than one world is present, check the server’s startup selection and the modification time of the files. Do not assume that a directory named World is the active one merely because it has that name.
2. Download the save file
Download SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs to your computer and keep the server copy untouched until you have a verified backup. Open the downloaded file in a text editor rather than a word processor. The file can be large, so use the editor’s search function instead of scrolling manually.

3. Search for the planet’s SurfaceGravity entry
Search for surfacegravity or the XML element <SurfaceGravity>. The search can find several entries, so use the nearby planet name and surrounding tags to identify the one you intend to modify. A value by itself is not enough: changing the first matching number can affect the wrong planet.
Read enough of the surrounding block to establish the planet’s identity. Compare its name with the planet visible in your world and, if necessary, inspect additional nearby fields before editing.
4. Replace only the intended value
Change the numeric content associated with the selected planet’s SurfaceGravity element. Leave the element name, the surrounding XML structure and all unrelated values unchanged. Preserve the original value in your notes so you can revert without guessing.
The dedicated-server documentation cautions that values outside the normal interface range are unsupported and may affect gameplay or performance. A save edit can bypass normal interface limits, but bypassing a limit does not make an extreme value supported.
5. Save, upload and restart
Save the edited file, close it, and replace the server’s copy in the active world directory. Verify that the upload completed and that the file has the expected name and extension. Start the server and allow the world to load fully before testing the planet.

Test with a character or vehicle near the intended planet. If gravity is unchanged, stop and recheck the active world path, the planet name next to the edited entry and whether the replacement actually overwrote the file the server loads.
How sandbox configuration files relate to the edit
Official documentation describes world settings in sandbox_config.sbc and sandbox.sbc. For manual edits, sandbox_config.sbc takes priority. These files contain world-level settings, but a planet’s saved SurfaceGravity value may not be exposed as a normal option in the server interface. That is why a planetary change can require editing the save itself rather than changing a checkbox or slider.
Before changing either sandbox file, confirm that the setting you want is actually represented there. Do not copy a value from an unrelated example into a live world. If the host supplies a world-settings editor, use it for options it explicitly supports; reserve direct file editing for the planet value and other settings that the interface does not expose.
Can the dedicated-server panel change planetary gravity?
A dedicated server lets players connect to a third-party host instead of using a player-hosted peer-to-peer session. The official dedicated-server application can configure a world and load saved worlds, but its normal controls do not guarantee a field for every value stored in a save.

If the panel has no planetary SurfaceGravity control, it cannot perform that particular change merely by restarting the world. Follow the stopped-server save procedure instead.

The server documentation warns that numerical values outside the normal interface range are unsupported and can affect gameplay or performance. Treat a panel’s accepted range as a practical boundary; do not assume that entering an extreme number into an alternative field is equivalent to a supported planetary-gravity setting.
Add artificial gravity to a ship or station
Artificial gravity is configured in the game, not by rewriting a planet. The standard Gravity Generator is a large-grid block. It creates a field in the directions and dimensions you specify.
Place and open a Gravity Generator
- Build a large-grid Gravity Generator on the ship or station that should provide the field.
- Open the block’s Control Panel from the terminal or the block interaction screen.
- Set the field direction. The direction determines where the generated field acts relative to the block.
- Set the field width, height and depth so the field covers the intended interior or working area.
- Set acceleration and apply the configuration, then enter the field with a character or test object.
The documented acceleration range for the Gravity Generator is -1 g to 1 g. This is a game-setting range, not a real-world measurement study or a server performance guarantee. A negative setting reverses the direction of the generated acceleration; choose the direction and sign together so the field points where you expect.
Understand what the field affects
Artificial gravity affects players whose jetpacks are off, dropped items and mobile grids that contain Artificial Mass. It does not turn the surrounding planet’s natural gravity up or down. A generator on a ship can therefore provide a local walking surface while the ship remains in a planet’s existing field.
Use a Spherical Gravity Generator for radial pull
A Spherical Gravity Generator is the appropriate block when you want objects pulled toward or around a central point instead of accelerated through a rectangular directional volume. Configure it from its controls and size the field for the space you want to influence. Its defining behavior is radial attraction toward the generator, so test the result from several positions before placing machinery or access routes permanently.

Planetary and artificial gravity: choosing the right method

What heavier planetary gravity changes in play
Increasing natural gravity raises the force that ships and characters must overcome near the planet. Launches become harder, and leaving the atmosphere costs more effort and propulsion. That change affects every player and vehicle operating in the planet’s field, unlike a generator whose effect ends at its configured boundary.

Because a planetary edit changes the shared world, agree on the intended value with every server operator before replacing the save. A value that is entertaining for a challenge world can make ordinary landings, construction and rescue operations impractical.
Admin Screen, permissions and what they can do
The in-game Admin Screen is an administrator tool for managing a session. Having access to it does not make it a substitute for editing a planet’s saved SurfaceGravity value. If the objective is a persistent planetary change that survives a restart, use the save-file method and verify the resulting world.
Permissions also matter for artificial gravity: only a player who can build or control the relevant grid can place and configure its generator. Granting administrative access does not automatically place a generator on a ship or alter the block’s field dimensions.
Troubleshoot a planetary-gravity change
The planet still has its old gravity
- Confirm that the server was stopped before the replacement.
- Check that you edited the active world, not another save with a similar name.
- Search the file again and verify that the changed value is next to the intended planet name.
- Confirm that the uploaded file is named
SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbswhen that is the active file, with no extra extension added by the file manager. - Restart the server after the upload; a running session will continue using the world it already loaded.
The server fails to load after the edit
Stop the server and restore the untouched backup. If the backup loads normally, compare the edited file with the original and reapply only the intended numeric change. A malformed XML structure, altered tag or accidental edit elsewhere in the file can prevent a world from loading.

Restore the backup or replace the incorrect value using your recorded original. Then repeat the search, identify the planet from its nearby name and change only that entry. Multiple SurfaceGravity matches are expected in a world containing more than one planet.
A generator has no visible effect
- Open the generator’s Control Panel and confirm that its field dimensions are large enough to reach the test position.
- Check the direction and acceleration sign; a field can be active but point away from the area you are testing.
- For character testing, turn the jetpack off.
- For a mobile grid, verify that it contains Artificial Mass when you expect the grid itself to respond.
- For radial behavior, use a Spherical Gravity Generator rather than a directional rectangular field.
Gameplay or performance becomes unacceptable
Return to the backed-up value if the new planetary gravity makes launches or routine movement impractical. The dedicated-server documentation specifically warns that unsupported numerical values can affect gameplay or performance. Test extreme changes on a copy of the world before applying them to a shared production save.
A safe operating checklist
- Classify the request as planetary gravity, directional artificial gravity or spherical artificial gravity.
- For planetary gravity, identify the active save and record the original value.
- Stop the server and keep a complete local backup.
- Edit only the intended
SurfaceGravityentry, using the nearby planet name to verify it. - Upload the same save file to the active world directory and restart.
- Test near the planet before inviting players back into the changed world.
- For artificial gravity, configure the generator from its Control Panel and test the field with jetpacks off or with Artificial Mass where applicable.
Following this separation keeps a persistent world change distinct from a local construction feature and gives you a reversible path when the result is not what the server community intended.
