On Android, Gboard’s swipe-to-type feature is called Glide typing. To change it, open Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing. If you are already typing, open Gboard’s features menu, select More > Settings, then open Glide typing. Android manufacturers and versions can use different labels, but both routes reach Gboard’s keyboard options.
Google documents the feature and its limits in Gboard Help. The instructions below show both paths, how to test the change, and what to do when Glide typing or its settings are missing.
What “gesture typing” means in Gboard
Gboard calls gesture typing Glide typing. Instead of tapping each key separately, slide one finger from letter to letter in the order needed to spell a word, then lift your finger. Google describes the gesture as sliding “from letter to letter to spell out words.” The keyboard interprets the path and inserts the word when you finish the gesture.

It does not change the behavior of a different keyboard app installed on the phone.

There is no separate accessory, paid service, or subscription required. The setting is part of the Gboard installation on the Android device. What you see can still depend on the Android release, the Gboard version, and the language or layout currently selected.
Google warns that not all languages work with Glide typing. If the option is unavailable or swiping produces no words, check the language and layout currently selected in Gboard before assuming the keyboard is malfunctioning.
Before you change anything
Make sure Gboard is the keyboard currently selected for the phone. The instructions below open Gboard’s controls; they will not expose Glide typing if another on-screen keyboard is active. You also need a text field for the in-keyboard route, such as a message, search box, note, or document.
Google’s Glide typing instructions cover Android 8.0 and later. A phone running a customized Android interface can place the same controls under different headings, so do not rely on the exact wording shown on another person’s phone. If the phone’s menus have been changed by its manufacturer, the manufacturer is the appropriate source for the device-specific path.
Choose the settings route that fits what you are doing
| Route | Best when | Path | What can differ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Settings | Gboard is not open, or you want to manage the keyboard from the phone’s main settings. | Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing | Android versions and manufacturers may rename or reorganize these menus. |
| Gboard’s own menu | You are already in a text field and want to change the setting without leaving the app. | Open Gboard > Open features menu > More > Settings > Glide typing | The features-menu button and available entries can vary with the keyboard layout or version. |
Both paths open Gboard’s keyboard settings. The Android route is useful when no text field is available; the in-keyboard route is quicker while composing a message or document. Google shows both approaches in its Gboard setup instructions.
Change Glide typing from Android Settings
Use this procedure when you want to reach Gboard before opening an app that accepts text.
- Open Settings. Find and open the device’s main Settings app.
- Open the language and input controls. Tap System, then Languages & input.
- Open the on-screen keyboard list. Tap Virtual keyboard, then Gboard.
- Open Glide typing. Tap Glide typing to view the controls available on that device and adjust the options shown there. Do not expect every phone or language layout to show identical controls.
- Test the result. Open any app with a text field and glide across the letters of a short word, lifting your finger at the end.
The exact wording is not guaranteed on every phone. Google’s help for general keyboard use also shows a path written as System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard, which reflects the way some Android releases organize the same controls. If your menus do not match either path, use Settings search for Gboard, virtual keyboard, or on-screen keyboard.

If “Virtual keyboard” is not listed
Look for an equivalent entry such as On-screen keyboard under System or Keyboard. The label is controlled by the Android version and the device manufacturer, not by the app in which you type. Search results may take you directly to Gboard or to a list of installed keyboards; choose the entry that identifies Gboard and then look for its typing options.
If the phone offers several keyboards, opening the wrong one will not show Gboard’s Glide typing section. Confirm the keyboard name before changing a setting. When a customized Android build removes the expected entry or behaves differently from Google’s sequence, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer.
Change Glide typing from the Gboard keyboard
This route keeps you in the app where you are typing and is usually the most convenient way to reach the setting during a conversation or search.
- Open a text field. Start a message, search, note, or other field that brings up Gboard.
- Open Gboard’s features menu. Tap the keyboard’s Open features menu button. Depending on the layout, this may be the control that expands the toolbar above the keys.
- Open the full settings list. Tap More, then tap Settings.
- Select Glide typing. Open Glide typing and change the options shown for your installation. The available controls can differ by version and language, so use the labels actually displayed on your phone.
- Return to the text field and test. Glide a simple word, lift your finger, and check that the resulting word is inserted.
Google also documents opening Gboard settings by tapping the Settings icon directly on the keyboard. If you see that icon instead of an Open features menu button, use it and then choose the Glide typing section. The two controls lead to the same keyboard settings area; their appearance depends on the current Gboard layout.
How to use Glide typing after changing the setting
Make one word
- Place your finger on the first letter of the word.
- Without lifting your finger, slide across each following letter in sequence.
- Lift your finger after the final letter. Gboard completes the gesture and enters the interpreted word.
You do not need to draw between words. Finish one word by lifting your finger, then begin the next word at its first letter. The exact word Gboard chooses depends on the language and keyboard layout active at the time. A continuous movement matters: lifting your finger before the final letter ends the current gesture.
Check the active language before judging the result
Glide typing availability is language-dependent. A layout can be installed for typing while still not supporting this gesture. If swiping works in one language but not another, switch to the language that supports the feature or use tap typing for the unsupported layout. Google’s help page does not provide a complete supported-language list, so the absence of Glide typing in a particular language cannot be resolved by enabling a universal switch.
When testing, check the language indicator on Gboard first and use a familiar short word. This avoids confusing a language change with a settings failure. If the same gesture works after switching layouts, the original layout was the limiting factor rather than the text app.

Move the cursor with a keyboard gesture
Cursor movement is a separate Gboard gesture from sliding across letters to form words. Google’s general keyboard guide documents moving the cursor by swiping left or right on the space bar. This is useful when you need to edit a word or place the insertion point without tapping a precise location in the text.
Use the gesture by placing a finger on the space bar and sliding horizontally. It does not create a word; it moves the text cursor. The documented gesture is available independently of the older setting report below, so do not assume that a cursor-control switch must appear in current versions of Gboard. Google’s current general instructions are at Use your keyboard on Android.
About “Enable gesture cursor control”
A Google Pixel Community answer dated October 20, 2020 recommended Gboard settings > Glide typing > Enable gesture cursor control. That is community guidance from that date, not a current specification for every Gboard release or Android device. Current versions may omit the exact toggle while still supporting cursor movement on the space bar. Treat the switch as optional and version-dependent rather than as a required step for Glide typing.
When Glide typing is missing or does not respond
The Glide typing menu is not present
- Confirm that the keyboard selected for the device is Gboard, not another on-screen keyboard.
- Open Gboard from a text field and use its Settings icon or Open features menu > More > Settings; the Android Settings hierarchy may simply use a different label.
- Check the active language and layout. Google explicitly says the feature is not available in every language.
- Use Settings search for Gboard, virtual keyboard, or on-screen keyboard if the standard headings are absent.
- If the phone uses a heavily customized Android interface and neither route exists, consult the device manufacturer, as Google recommends for customized versions.
The setting is visible, but swiping does nothing
- Open a plain text field, such as a search box or note, and try a short, familiar word.
- Start on the first letter, keep your finger down while crossing the remaining letters, and lift only after the last letter.
- Check that you are using the Gboard layout whose language supports Glide typing.
- Try the same gesture in another text field. If it works elsewhere, the original app may handle text input differently.
- Repeat with a second word after a successful test. Consistent results are a better check than a single accidental insertion.
These checks distinguish a gesture or language issue from a problem limited to one app. They do not add support for a language that Gboard does not support. If no text field accepts the gesture and the setting cannot be reached, the device-specific keyboard configuration is the next thing to verify.
The menu labels do not match the instructions
Android’s settings names vary by release and manufacturer. Google’s own documentation uses both Languages & input > Virtual keyboard and Keyboard > On-screen keyboard descriptions. Search within Settings for Gboard or on-screen keyboard, then open the entry that identifies Gboard. On a customized Android build, the manufacturer is the appropriate source for the exact menu path.

You cannot find a cursor-control toggle
Do not treat the dated Pixel Community instruction as a requirement. First try swiping left or right on the space bar, which Google’s general Gboard help documents as the cursor gesture. The exact Enable gesture cursor control label may not exist on your version.

A reliable verification routine
After changing any Glide typing option, verify the result in a controlled way rather than relying on a long message.
- Open a text field where Gboard is clearly active.
- Confirm the expected language is selected on the keyboard.
- Glide a short word using one continuous finger movement.
- Lift your finger and check whether one word appears.
- Repeat with a second word to ensure the behavior is consistent.
- If you are testing cursor movement, place the cursor in existing text and swipe left or right on the space bar.
If the first test fails, return to the Glide typing page, confirm the language, and repeat the gesture slowly. If the setting page itself cannot be reached, use the alternate route rather than repeatedly changing options in the app where the problem appeared. Testing in a second text field can also show whether the behavior is limited to one app.
Android version and manufacturer differences
Google’s Glide typing guidance applies to Android 8.0 and later, while warning that customized Android versions may use different steps. The feature name remains Glide typing in Google’s documentation, but the route to Gboard can be reorganized under System, Keyboard, or Languages & input. This is why two phones can show different navigation labels while exposing the same Gboard setting.
When a manufacturer has moved or renamed the controls, use the phone’s Settings search and then verify that the destination identifies Gboard. If the manufacturer’s build removes the expected entry or behaves differently, Google’s guidance is to contact the device manufacturer for device-specific help. Avoid applying a Pixel-specific menu path as though it were universal.

- Use Android Settings when Gboard is not currently visible, you are configuring a new phone, or you want to start from the system keyboard list.
- Use Gboard’s menu when you are already composing text and want the shortest path back to the keyboard options.
- Use Settings search when the phone’s Android version or manufacturer does not show the labels in Google’s example.
- Check language support first when the Glide typing page or behavior differs between keyboard layouts.
- Use the space-bar gesture for cursor movement instead of searching for an older cursor-control toggle that may not be present.
Changing Gboard’s Glide typing settings requires no separate accessory or subscription. The setting is part of the Gboard keyboard installed on the Android device, and the available controls depend on the device’s Android build, Gboard version, and selected language.

Why can’t I find Glide typing?
First confirm that Gboard is the selected on-screen keyboard. Then check the active language and layout, because Google says Glide typing is not available in every language. Customized Android versions may also place the control under different headings.
Does Glide typing work in every language?
No. Google explicitly says that not all languages work with the feature. A language may be available for tap typing without supporting Glide typing.
How do I move the cursor with Gboard?
Google’s general Gboard help documents placing your finger on the space bar and swiping left or right. This cursor gesture is separate from sliding across letters to enter a word.
Do I need “Enable gesture cursor control” for cursor movement?
Not necessarily. A Pixel Community answer from October 20, 2020 mentioned that toggle, but current Gboard versions may not show it. Try swiping on the space bar first.
Why does Glide typing work in one app but not another?
Test the same short word in a second text field. If it works there, the original app may handle text input differently. Also confirm that Gboard and the supported language layout are active.
Is Glide typing available on all Android phones?
Google’s instructions cover Android 8.0 and later, but manufacturers can customize Android menus and keyboard behavior. If the documented routes do not work, Google recommends contacting the device manufacturer.
The Bottom Line
Gboard’s gesture-typing control is called Glide typing. Open it through Android Settings or through Gboard’s own More > Settings menu, then test a continuous swipe in a supported language. If labels differ, search Settings for Gboard or the on-screen keyboard; for cursor movement, swipe on the space bar.
