Gemini’s desktop settings depend on which version you use. For a personal account, manage chat activity and retention on the Gemini website or Google My Activity. The native Windows and Mac apps have documented keyboard shortcuts, but Google’s current help pages do not document a general startup-at-login switch or a general notification on/off setting for either app. Gemini in Chrome has separate controls for whether it appears in the browser, Mac menu bar, or Windows system tray.
First, identify which Gemini you use
“Gemini on desktop” can refer to the native Windows app, the native Mac app, Gemini in Chrome, or the Gemini website in a browser. Their settings are not interchangeable. In particular, Chrome’s visibility preferences do not control the native desktop app, and the documented privacy and activity controls are reached through Gemini on the web or Google My Activity—not through a separate comprehensive privacy panel in the native apps.
Before changing anything, identify the surface that is causing the problem. If you want to remove saved conversations, use the activity controls for your Google account. If you want Gemini out of Chrome’s system tray, use Chrome’s own Gemini preferences. If a standalone Gemini window appears when you use a shortcut, that is different from an app launching automatically when you sign in to Windows or macOS. Choosing the right product and purpose first prevents changing a setting that has no effect on the behavior you mean to change.

The instructions below keep these products separate so you can change the setting that actually applies to your setup. A useful way to read the table is by control type: activity and retention are account-level privacy controls; shortcuts make an app easier to summon; Chrome preferences change where Gemini is visible in Chrome; and the Windows update alert tells you about software maintenance. None of those controls should be treated as a substitute for another.

Change Gemini privacy and activity settings
For a personal Google account, use Gemini on the web or the Gemini section of Google My Activity. Google’s computer instructions describe the following controls for Gemini Apps Activity: reviewing and deleting activity, turning Keep activity off, and changing automatic deletion.
Open the activity controls
- Go to
gemini.google.comand sign in to the personal Google account whose activity you want to manage. - Select Settings and help, then select Activity.
- Alternatively, go to
myactivity.google.com/product/geminito open Gemini activity in Google My Activity. - Review the available activity and retention controls. Depending on what you want to do, delete activity already saved, turn Keep activity off, or change the auto-delete period.
If you use more than one Google account, check which account is signed in before reviewing or changing Activity. The activity page is associated with the account you open it under, so switching to another account can show a different activity history or different controls. The Gemini website route and the direct My Activity route are alternative ways to reach the relevant Gemini activity controls; you do not need to look for a matching privacy panel in the Windows app or the Mac app.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help says activity older than 18 months is auto-deleted by default. For personal accounts, the available auto-delete choices are 3, 18, or 36 months, or Don’t auto-delete activity. Choose a period based on how long you want activity retained; changing the setting is separate from deleting items that are already present.
The periods are retention choices, not a promise that choosing a shorter period immediately removes every item that is already in your activity. If you want to remove saved activity now, use the delete controls. If you want future activity handled on a different schedule, change the auto-delete choice as well. For example, a person who wants to clear existing saved activity and then retain future activity for a shorter time has two separate jobs: delete the existing items, then select the preferred auto-delete period.
Delete existing Gemini activity
Use the Activity controls or the Gemini page in My Activity to review and delete saved Gemini Apps Activity. Turning Keep activity off is not the same action as deleting the activity already saved. If your aim is to remove previous activity, use the delete controls rather than relying on the off setting alone.
Review the activity shown before deleting it, especially if you are signed into a personal account used for more than one purpose. Deletion addresses saved Gemini Apps Activity; it is not the same as changing the setting that determines whether activity is kept going forward. Conversely, changing the future-retention setting does not by itself perform the delete action for saved items. Treat the two controls as separate decisions: what should happen to activity already in the list, and what should happen to activity going forward.
Turn Keep activity off—and understand what that means
In the Activity controls, turn off Keep activity. Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback, even when Gemini Apps Activity is off. Those conversations will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. So this setting stops activity from being saved there as usual; it is not immediate deletion and does not mean that no information is processed.
This distinction matters if you are looking for a privacy setting because you want to stop future conversations from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity, versus a deletion control because you want to remove past items. Turning activity off addresses the former, subject to Google’s stated allowance of up to 72 hours for service and feedback purposes. It does not erase the history already saved, nor does it establish that Gemini processes no information to provide the service. Google’s wording is specific about what changes: conversations do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity while the setting is off, but may be retained with the account for up to 72 hours.

Its coverage includes the Gemini web app and the Gemini app on macOS; the page says it was last updated September 24, 2026, and its privacy notice was last updated June 29, 2026. The privacy hub is a disclosure resource, not a separate desktop-app settings screen.
For the step-by-step account controls, Google’s Gemini Apps Help page, “Manage and delete your activity in Gemini Apps — Computer,” is the relevant guide. The Privacy Hub is useful for broader disclosures, but do not expect it to provide a switch that replaces the Activity controls.
If you use a work or school Google account
Gemini Apps Activity settings for work or school accounts are controlled by the organization’s Workspace administrator. Depending on the organization’s configuration, you may not be able to change retention settings or see how long chats are retained. If the Activity control is missing, or a retention option is unavailable, check with your administrator rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning.
This changes the troubleshooting path. For a personal account, start with the Activity page and the available account controls. For a managed account, the organization may set the policy centrally, so an individual user may not have the same options. A missing control is not necessarily a sign that the desktop app is out of date or that the user has opened the wrong menu; it may reflect an administrator-managed setting. Ask your Workspace administrator which retention controls apply and whether they can be changed for your organization.
This account-level administration is distinct from a personal account’s activity controls and from whether an app launches when you sign in to your computer. For Windows, Google’s September 11, 2026 Workspace notice says the referenced feature is on by default for organizations with Gemini enabled and is subject to Workspace Admin console Generative AI settings; it also says there is no end-user setting for that feature. That is an organizational availability control, not an individual startup preference.
Keep the scope of that notice in mind: it describes an organization’s control over feature availability through Workspace Admin console Generative AI settings. It does not document a Windows startup preference, and it should not be used to infer that an administrator has changed how an individual computer starts apps.
Can you turn off Gemini notifications or stop it opening at startup?
Google’s cited native-app instructions do not document a general notification switch or a launch-at-login setting for either the Windows or Mac app. That means there is no supported Gemini-app path to provide here for disabling all notifications or changing startup behavior. Avoid treating a quick-access shortcut or a Chrome visibility preference as a startup control: those settings do different jobs.

This is a documentation boundary, not a claim that every computer behaves identically or that no operating-system controls exist. The Google instructions cited here establish the Gemini-specific controls described in this article; they do not establish a Gemini-specific launch-at-login toggle or broad notification switch. So if your question is “How do I turn off all Gemini notifications?” or “How do I stop the native app from opening when I sign in?”, the accurate answer from the documented product instructions is that they do not provide a Gemini setting path for either task.

What the Windows update alert does
The Windows help page describes an update notification that may appear in the bottom-right corner when Gemini opens. Select Restart in that alert to restart Gemini and install the update. This documented notice concerns an app update; it is not evidence of a general setting for turning off Gemini notifications.
The alert is therefore best understood as an update action, not a routine message preference. If you see it and want to apply the update, choose Restart. If your concern is that Gemini is generally notifying you too often, this specific update notice does not provide a documented way to control all notifications. Do not assume that dismissing or acting on an update alert changes future startup behavior or the visibility preferences in Chrome.
What is and is not established about startup
The native Windows and Mac help pages cited here do not document a Gemini preference for launching at computer startup or login. They therefore do not establish a Gemini-specific toggle or steps for changing one. If you are using Gemini in Chrome, the visibility preferences below control where Gemini appears in Chrome, not whether the native desktop app starts with your computer.
There is also a difference between an app being installed, an app being open, and an app being easy to summon. The Windows app’s Alt + Space shortcut and the Mac app’s Option + Space shortcut are documented quick-access shortcuts. A shortcut gives you a way to call up Gemini; it is not a documented setting for starting the app automatically when you turn on or sign in to your computer. Similarly, showing Gemini in a Chrome menu bar or system tray changes its placement in Chrome, not native-app launch behavior.
Change the native app shortcut or install the app
The native apps have platform-specific requirements and installation routes. These are useful if you are checking whether you have the standalone app or the browser version before following a settings guide. The Windows and Mac apps are separate downloads, and the directions and shortcut details differ by platform.
Windows app
Google lists these Windows app requirements: Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of available disk space, and a stable internet connection. To install it, go to gemini.google/desktop, download GeminiSetup.exe, run the installer, open Gemini from the Start menu, and sign in.
These are the requirements given by Google for the native Windows app; they are not a description of requirements for Gemini in Chrome or the Gemini website. If you are following the Windows instructions but cannot find Gemini in the Start menu, check that you downloaded and ran the standalone installer rather than simply opening Gemini in a browser. The installation sequence is download the named installer, run it, launch Gemini from Start, and sign in.

The documented quick-access shortcut is Alt + Space. The Windows instructions cited here do not describe a way to customize it. If your question is about an update alert rather than the shortcut, use Restart in the bottom-right update notification to install the update.

Mac app
Google lists macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of disk space, and a stable internet connection as requirements for the Mac app. To install it, go to gemini.google/mac, download the DMG, open it, drag Gemini into Applications, then launch Gemini and sign in.
The Mac app’s quick-access shortcut is Option + Space. Google says it can be customized in the app settings. The cited Mac instructions do not specify a deeper settings path, so use the app’s settings rather than assuming a particular menu label or shortcut editor location. This is the one documented native-app shortcut customization in the cited Mac instructions; it does not imply that the Mac app also has a documented general notification or launch-at-login switch.
In short, the documented shortcut difference is straightforward: Windows uses Alt + Space, while Mac uses Option + Space, and Google’s instructions specifically say the Mac shortcut can be customized. Keep the platform distinction rather than applying a Windows shortcut instruction to the Mac app or expecting the Windows help page to describe the Mac shortcut editor.

These preferences apply to Gemini in Chrome, not the native Windows or Mac app. Google’s Chrome Help Center gives this path:
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open AI innovations, then select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, change the option for where Gemini appears: at the top of the browser, in the Mac menu bar with a keyboard shortcut, or in the Windows system tray with a keyboard shortcut.
Use the preference that matches the place you want to show or hide Gemini. If you are trying to stop a native Gemini app from opening at login, changing one of these Chrome preferences will not do that; it only changes Gemini’s presence in Chrome’s interface.
The three placement choices answer different visibility questions. The browser option is for Gemini at the top of Chrome. On a Mac, the menu-bar option can show Gemini there with a keyboard shortcut. On Windows, the system-tray option can show Gemini there with a keyboard shortcut. Choose the matching control based on where you see Gemini, rather than switching all the choices without knowing which surface is involved.
These are Chrome preferences, so they are most relevant when the entry you want to hide or show belongs to the browser experience. They are not the activity-retention controls for a Google account, and they are not a way to customize the native Windows shortcut or the Mac app’s Option + Space shortcut. If you only use Gemini in a browser, the Chrome path may be the correct visibility route; if you installed a native desktop app, use that app’s own documented instructions for its shortcut and consult the web activity page for privacy controls.

- You are in a different Gemini product. Chrome’s Gemini preferences govern Chrome’s browser, menu bar, and system-tray presence. They are not the native app’s privacy, shortcut, or startup controls.
- You are signed in with a managed account. A Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity settings for work and school accounts. Ask the administrator about unavailable retention controls.
- You expected Keep activity off to erase old chats. Use the activity deletion controls for existing saved activity. The off setting is not immediate deletion, and Google describes a possible retention period of up to 72 hours for service and feedback purposes.
- You expected the Windows update alert to be a general notification setting. The documented alert is specifically for an available app update; selecting Restart applies the update.
- You are looking for a startup or broad notification toggle in the native app. The cited Google instructions do not document either control. Do not infer that a shortcut or a Chrome appearance preference changes startup or all notifications.
When troubleshooting, match the setting to both the product surface and the outcome you want. “Gemini is visible in the system tray” points to the Windows Chrome preference if you mean Gemini in Chrome; “Gemini activity is still listed” points to account Activity and deletion controls; “Gemini is easy to open” may relate to a shortcut. These symptoms are not interchangeable, and a control in one category may not affect another category at all.
