To change an Ethernet link setting in Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, open your Ethernet adapter’s Properties, and check the Advanced tab for Speed & Duplex. For a normal gigabit connection, choose Auto Negotiation rather than forcing a speed. If the link still shows 100 Mbps, check the adapter, the specific router or switch port, and the cable: all must support and negotiate the faster rate.

What an Ethernet speed setting changes

The displayed Ethernet link speed is the rate negotiated between your computer’s network adapter and the device at the other end of the cable, such as a router or switch. A 100 Mbps link reading does not, by itself, show that your internet plan is capped at 100 Mbps. It identifies the local connection between those two devices.

Link rate is also not the same as internet throughput. Even a faster local Ethernet link cannot guarantee that your internet plan, router’s WAN connection, or a remote speed-test server will deliver the same rate.

  3. Open the Advanced tab and look for Speed & Duplex or a similarly named property. The label and available options vary by adapter and driver.

  4. Select Auto Negotiation for an ordinary gigabit connection, then apply the change. Check the link speed again after the connection renegotiates.

These directions apply to Windows, but the exact property and options are hardware- and driver-specific. If the property is absent, consult the computer or adapter maker’s driver documentation; a missing manual gigabit choice does not, on its own, mean the adapter is faulty. Intel recommends Auto Negotiation for its gigabit adapters and notes that a separate “1.0 Gbps Full Duplex” choice may not be available in some drivers. See Intel’s guidance on modifying Ethernet controller speed and its Speed and Duplex configuration guide.

Why Auto Negotiation is usually the right choice

For gigabit Ethernet, both ends of the connection need to support the desired rate and negotiate compatibly. Leaving Auto Negotiation enabled is the normal configuration; Intel says it can produce a 1.0 Gbps link when the other networking equipment also negotiates correctly. That is a link-rate outcome, not a guarantee of equivalent internet throughput. Read Intel’s explanation of links capped at 100 Mbps.

Manually forcing a speed or duplex mode is mainly a troubleshooting measure for a known link partner that has itself been deliberately configured to a specific mode. If you force one end but not the other, the mismatch can impair performance or prevent the link from working correctly. When manual settings are necessary, match the adapter and link-partner settings.

Fix an Ethernet connection stuck at 100 Mbps

Work from the link endpoints outward. Change one thing at a time and recheck the negotiated link after each test; this helps identify whether the limitation follows the PC, cable, or port.

1. Confirm the reading and capabilities

Check the adapter’s reported link speed, then verify that both the PC’s Ethernet adapter and the specific router or switch port support the faster rate you want. A gigabit-capable router does not make every port or connected adapter gigabit-capable.

2. Check negotiation and the driver

For an Intel gigabit adapter, use Auto Negotiation and make sure the other end is configured compatibly. Check for a current driver as part of troubleshooting. Intel’s gigabit-speed troubleshooting guidance covers the driver, link-partner capability, negotiation, and cable checks.

3. Reseat and test the cable

Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends. Then test with a known-good cable rather than assuming the existing one is sound. Intel recommends Cat 6 or better in its gigabit and 100 Mbps troubleshooting guidance, including its 100 Mbps link article. Treat that as manufacturer troubleshooting advice, not a guarantee that a Cat 6 label will fix every fault.

Smolink Cat 8 Ethernet Cable, 50ft 40Gbps 2000MHz RJ45 LAN Cable
  • Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
  • 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
  • Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
  • Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
  • 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.

If you need a test cable, borrowing one known to work is a useful first step. A replacement cable only helps if the current cable is the limiting part; it cannot raise the speed beyond the capability of the adapter and port.

4. Try another port or a direct connection

Connect to a known gigabit-capable router or switch port with the known-good cable. If the problem follows the PC across cables and ports, investigate its adapter or driver. If it follows the cable or a particular port, focus on that component. Intel recommends using known-gigabit equipment and a cable known to work when isolating link-speed problems.

When replacement hardware may help

Choose equipment only after identifying which part is limiting the link. A new cable, adapter, router, or switch cannot make the rest of the connection exceed its own capabilities.

Keep link-speed and internet-speed tests separate

First confirm the Ethernet link between the computer and router or switch. Then test internet throughput separately. If the local link negotiates at the expected rate but an internet test is slower, the negotiated Ethernet rate alone does not identify the cause; the internet plan, router’s WAN connection, or test server can affect the result.
