You can change a domain without deliberately giving up its accumulated search signals, but no migration can guarantee unchanged rankings. Treat the project as a URL-changing site move: prepare and test the new site, map every important old URL to a relevant new one, return direct permanent server-side redirects, update canonical and internal-link signals, submit the new sitemap, and use Google Search Console’s Change of Address tool when the domain or subdomain actually changes. Google then recrawls and reindexes the URLs, so visibility can fluctuate while processing occurs.

What a domain change does to SEO

Changing old-example.com to new-example.com changes the URLs that Google has crawled, indexed and associated with links, content and other signals. It is different from moving to a new hosting provider while keeping exactly the same URLs. A host-only move mainly changes infrastructure and DNS; a domain move requires URL correspondence, redirects and new-domain signals.

Google Search Central says that “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That statement describes the redirect signal, not a promise that rankings will remain identical. A significant site change can cause temporary ranking fluctuations as Google recrawls and reindexes, and processing happens URL by URL.

Decide whether to move everything at once

Small and medium sites

For a small or medium site, Google generally recommends moving all URLs together. A single coordinated launch gives visitors a consistent experience and lets Google discover the new site as one change.

Large sites

If the site is large and you can isolate a meaningful section, a limited test move can expose mapping, redirect, crawl or capacity problems before the full launch. A test section is not proof that every template and URL type will work: its behavior may not represent the entire site. Treat it as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

Change one major variable when possible

A domain move combined with a redesign, CMS replacement, information-architecture rewrite or large content deletion makes diagnosis difficult. Keep content, templates and paths as stable as practical, then make other major changes after the migration has settled. If a redesign is unavoidable, document every change and expand the pre-launch test plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a lower-traffic period when seasonality or weekly patterns make that practical. Schedule staff for the launch and the first days of monitoring rather than treating DNS or redirect activation as a one-person task.

Build the old-to-new URL map

The map is the migration’s source of truth. Every important old URL should have a deliberate outcome: a matching new URL, a consolidated destination, or a genuine removal.

Collect URLs from every useful system

  • Export all URLs in the current XML sitemaps.
  • Export published URLs from the CMS, including media and attachment records where their URLs are changing.
  • Use analytics and server logs to find URLs that receive visits or are still requested.
  • Review Search Console link data and your list of sites linking to valuable pages.
  • Include image, video, script and stylesheet URLs when those asset URLs will change; they can affect discovery, rendering or referral traffic.
  • Include URL variants that users or crawlers actually request, such as trailing-slash, case or parameter forms, and record the canonical version you intend to keep.

Match intent, not just URL text

Map each old page to the most relevant new page with equivalent purpose and content. If several pages are intentionally consolidated, redirect each old page to the one new page that replaces its subject. Do not send every old URL to the new homepage: an unrelated destination can frustrate users and may be treated as a soft 404.

When a page has genuinely been removed and has no suitable replacement, let the new site return an appropriate 404 or 410. A redirect is not automatically better than an accurate missing-page response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the result in a testable file

Keep at least these columns: old absolute URL, new absolute URL, expected HTTP response, redirect type, page owner or template, and test status. Preserve a copy of the old sitemap and the list of high-value inbound links so you can compare them after launch.

Prepare and test the new domain before launch

Make destination pages crawlable

Build the new site in a protected environment, but make sure the production version will return successful responses, contain the intended content and be accessible to Googlebot. Check representative pages from every template, language, device layout and content type. A page that looks correct in a browser can still be blocked by robots rules, a migration-only noindex directive or an authentication layer.

  • Remove temporary noindex directives when the new site is ready to be indexed.
  • Remove migration-only robots.txt blocks that would prevent crawling.
  • Use a self-referencing canonical URL on each destination page.
  • Update hreflang annotations so every language or regional alternate uses the new domain and points back consistently.
  • Replace internal links with the destination URLs rather than relying on redirects.
  • Create a new XML sitemap containing the new canonical URLs only.
  • Check that images, video, JavaScript and CSS load from the intended host and protocol.

Use a crawl or scripted URL sample to find links that still point to the old domain, canonical tags that name the old host, mixed-content requests, redirect loops and pages that accidentally return a soft 404. Keep the old site available for redirect testing; do not switch off its server before the new responses have been verified.

Verify Search Console properties

Verify both domains before launch and preserve the verification method through the move. Include relevant protocol and hostname variants (for example, HTTP and HTTPS, and www and non-www) so you can inspect the complete transition. Confirm that the account has permission to submit sitemaps and Change of Address requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Implement direct permanent redirects

Use a server response, not a browser trick

Return a permanent server-side 301 or 308 from each old URL to its final matching URL. The destination should be reached in one hop. A redirect chain such as old URL → intermediate URL → new URL adds latency and creates more opportunities for a failed request, even though Googlebot can follow longer chains.

Do not use JavaScript redirects, meta-refresh pages or a client-side notice as the primary migration mechanism when you can configure the server. Test the actual HTTP response, not only what a browser eventually displays.

Check rules for specificity and safety

  • Place specific URL rules before broad domain rules so an exception is not swallowed by a catch-all.
  • Preserve meaningful path and query information only when it maps to a real destination; do not create infinite parameter combinations.
  • Prevent loops in which the old and new hosts redirect back to each other.
  • Make sure the response is permanent and points directly to the final HTTPS URL if HTTPS is part of the move.
  • Return the intended 404 or 410 for removed content rather than redirecting it to an unrelated page.

Test a representative sample and then test the map at scale. A command-line header check such as curl -I https://old-example.com/old-path should show the expected permanent status and a single Location target; also test with a normal browser, a crawler and the major URL patterns used by your CMS.

Keep the old redirects for as long as possible—generally at least one year. Longer retention helps people and crawlers who still follow old links. During that period, ask owners of important external links, social profiles, advertising destinations and business listings to update them to the new URLs, reducing dependence on redirects.

Launch sequence for a domain migration

  1. Freeze and back up. Save the old sitemap, URL map, redirect configuration, robots.txt, canonical and hreflang exports, analytics settings and Search Console verification details.
  2. Deploy the new site. Confirm that the destination pages, assets, structured data and forms work on the production host.
  3. Activate redirects. Turn on one-hop 301 or 308 responses for every mapped old URL and verify representative responses from outside your development network.
  4. Publish crawl signals. Remove temporary blocks and noindex directives, update canonicals and internal links, and publish the new sitemap.
  5. Update external destinations. Change social profiles, email templates, ads, partner links and other controlled references to the new domain.
  6. Submit Change of Address. For a true domain or subdomain move, open Search Console’s Change of Address tool on each verified old-domain variant and select the corresponding new property. The tool is not for HTTP-to-HTTPS, www/non-www changes on the same domain or path changes within one domain.
  7. Inspect key URLs. Use Search Console URL Inspection on the homepage, high-traffic pages, pages with strong inbound links, representative templates, language versions and formerly problematic URLs.

Submit the new sitemap after the new property is verified. Keep the old sitemap available for comparison rather than replacing your monitoring data with a blank history.

Monitor both domains after the switch

Use Search Console reports together

Watch the old and new properties side by side. In a healthy transition, the old sitemap’s indexed URL count generally declines while the new sitemap’s indexed count grows. Review indexing reports, sitemap processing, URL Inspection results, search queries, clicks and impressions. Look for sudden clusters of excluded URLs rather than judging the migration from one page or one day.

Combine Google data with your own telemetry

  • Review server logs for Googlebot requests to old and new URLs, response codes, redirect loops and blocked resources.
  • Track analytics landing pages, organic sessions, conversions and referral traffic by hostname.
  • Monitor HTTP errors, DNS resolution, TLS certificates, origin health and server capacity.
  • Compare crawl volume and latency; Google may crawl the new site more heavily during the move.
  • Watch redirect hit counts so you know which old URLs still receive users or crawlers.

Do not retire the old host merely because the new homepage works. Keep redirects while old URLs continue to receive meaningful requests and until the transition has been stable for the planned retention period.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How long does a domain migration take?

There is no fixed completion date. Google says a medium-sized site can take “a few weeks or more” for the new URLs to gradually replace the old ones in search results; larger sites can take longer. The speed depends substantially on URL count and server speed. Google has no fixed crawl frequency and considers a move complete only after Googlebot has visited every old and new URL at least once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing is per URL, so a popular homepage may settle before a rarely linked archive page. Temporary ranking changes during recrawling are not, by themselves, evidence that the migration failed. Evaluate trends across indexed pages, impressions, clicks, errors and conversions, and investigate persistent losses at the URL level.

Troubleshoot ranking or traffic problems

New URLs are not indexed

  • Inspect a missing URL in Search Console and confirm it is reachable without login.
  • Check robots.txt, meta robots and HTTP headers for accidental blocks or noindex.
  • Confirm the new sitemap contains the canonical URL and was accepted.
  • Verify that the canonical tag, hreflang references and internal links use the new domain.
  • Check logs and server capacity for timeouts, 5xx responses or throttling.

Old pages show 404s or the wrong destination

Compare the failing URL with the map. Correct a missing rule, a path or case mismatch, a query-handling error or a broad catch-all that sends unrelated pages to the homepage. Re-test the final destination and inspect it after the redirect is fixed.

Redirects work but rankings remain lower

First rule out technical causes: chains, loops, unavailable destinations, stale canonicals, internal links to old URLs, blocked assets and content that changed during the move. Then compare the new page with its mapped predecessor for intent, main text, headings, structured data and user experience. A domain move can coincide with normal algorithmic or seasonal changes, so use several weeks of URL-level data rather than a single-day comparison.

Traffic drops across the entire site

Check DNS, TLS, server capacity and whether a sitewide robots rule or noindex header was deployed. Confirm that the Change of Address request was submitted for the correct old property and that the new sitemap is accessible. If the old site was taken offline, restore redirect service promptly; users and crawlers may still request its URLs.

Migration checklist

  • Decide whether URLs change; if not, follow the hosting-only process.
  • Choose a staged test only when the site is large enough and the section is representative enough to teach you something useful.
  • Verify all relevant old and new Search Console properties.
  • Inventory sitemap, CMS, analytics, log, link and asset URLs.
  • Map every important old URL to a relevant new URL or a genuine 404/410.
  • Test destination content, self-canonical tags, hreflang, internal links, robots rules and indexability.
  • Publish a sitemap of new canonical URLs.
  • Deploy direct 301 or 308 redirects and test at scale.
  • Submit Change of Address for actual domain or subdomain changes.
  • Update controlled external links and keep redirects for at least a year, preferably longer.
  • Monitor both properties, logs, analytics, errors, crawl load and server capacity.
