You generally cannot edit a Docker container’s original docker run configuration in place. Use docker update for Docker’s limited set of mutable resource and restart-policy settings; recreate the container for ports, environment variables, mounts, commands, entrypoints, images, capabilities, devices, DNS, networks, labels, and other creation-time choices. With Compose, edit the service definition and run docker compose up -d; Compose replaces changed containers while preserving mounted volumes.
What Docker lets you change after creation
A container records the configuration selected when it was created. Starting it again does not reinterpret a new set of run flags, because docker start has no opportunity to apply options that were never part of that container’s configuration. Docker therefore separates post-creation changes into two categories:

- In-place updates: a documented subset of resource controls and the restart policy can be changed with
docker update. - Replacement: most other
docker runchoices require creating a new container with the desired configuration.
This distinction answers common requests such as adding a published port or an environment variable. Those settings belong to the container’s creation configuration, so the usual solution is to create a replacement, move persistent data through a volume, verify the replacement, and then remove the old container.
Use docker update only for supported settings
The docker update command (also available as docker container update) changes resource controls and the restart policy for an existing container. It is not a general editor for every option accepted by docker run.

Resource controls you can update
Docker documents updates for controls such as:
- CPU shares and CPU limits
- CPU and memory settings
- Swap limits
- PID limits
- Block-I/O weight
- CPU and memory pinning
- The container’s restart policy
For example, this changes CPU capacity, memory, and the restart policy in one operation:
docker update --cpus 2 --memory 1g --restart=unless-stopped my-containerReplace my-container with the actual container name or ID. Resource changes affect the existing container rather than creating a second one, so its container identity and network address are not replaced by this command.

Docker states that a restart-policy change takes effect immediately. You can therefore adjust a policy on a running or stopped container without rebuilding its image or recreating the container.
A container created with --rm cannot have its restart policy updated. Automatic removal and automatic restarting are mutually exclusive: a container configured for removal after exit cannot also be configured to restart.
Windows-container limitation
The docker update and docker container update commands are not supported for Windows containers. On Windows, check the Docker Engine and CLI documentation for the platform-specific management options available to you.
Check the local CLI before a production change
Command flags and API availability can vary with the Docker Engine release. Check your installation before changing a production container:
docker version
docker update --helpUse the help output from the Docker CLI installed on the host as the final authority for accepted flags and syntax.

Options that require replacing the container
Create a replacement when you need to change any of these creation-time choices:
- Published ports and port mappings
- Environment variables
- Bind mounts or named mounts
- The command or entrypoint
- The user running the process
- Linux capabilities
- Devices
- DNS settings
- Network attachments or other network topology
- Labels
- The image
There is no supported in-place operation that retrofits these settings onto the existing container. Running docker start after editing a shell script, a .env file, or a command line does not change the old container’s stored configuration.
Why a new port cannot simply be added
A published port connects host networking to the container when the container is created. To add or change a mapping such as -p 8080:80, stop the old container and create a replacement with the complete desired port list. The same rule applies when changing a host port, container port, or protocol mapping.

Environment variables supplied with -e are part of the process environment assembled for the container. Recreating the container with the full set of variables is the reliable way to add, remove, or change them. Updating a variable in the shell that launches docker start does not alter variables already recorded in the container.
Why mounts, commands, and identity settings are replacement operations
Mount definitions, the command and entrypoint, the user, capabilities, devices, DNS configuration, labels, and network attachments all shape how Docker creates the container. Build a new container with the complete intended configuration instead of trying to layer one missing flag onto the old object.
Safe replacement with the Docker CLI
The following workflow keeps the old container available while you verify the new one. It also demonstrates how to preserve application data in a named volume.
- Stop the existing container.
docker stop appStopping first prevents both containers from attempting to use the same service resources at once.
- Rename the old container.
docker rename app app-oldThe old object remains available for inspection or rollback, while the desired name becomes free for the replacement.
- Create the replacement with every required option.
docker run -d --name app -p 8080:80 -e APP_ENV=production -v app-data:/var/lib/app image:tagInclude the complete configuration, not only the option you are changing. The example publishes host port 8080 to container port 80, sets an environment variable, mounts the named volume
app-data, and usesimage:tag. - Validate the replacement. Check the application’s own health signal, logs, endpoint, or operational checks before deleting
app-old. Confirm that the expected port responds, the process starts with the intended environment, and data in the mounted volume is present. - Remove the old container only after validation. Keeping
app-olduntil the replacement is known to work gives you a rollback point. Once the new container is accepted, remove the old object according to your normal cleanup procedure.
The replacement has a new container identity even though it uses the same image and can use the same name after the old object is renamed or removed. The named volume carries persistent files across the replacement; files written only to the old container’s writable layer do not.

Rollback when validation fails
If the new container fails validation, stop it and restore the previous container by stopping or removing the replacement, renaming app-old back to app, and starting the restored container. Perform these steps only after ensuring the replacement is no longer holding the required port or other exclusive resource. Because the old container was retained, its original configuration remains available for recovery.
Keep persistent state outside the container layer
Use named volumes or bind mounts for data that must survive replacement. The example’s app-data volume is independent of the container object, so creating a new container with the same volume exposes the existing files. Treat the volume mapping as part of the replacement specification: omitting it can make an application appear empty even though the data still exists in the volume.
Changing a Compose-managed service
For a service managed by Compose, the Compose file should remain the source of truth. Edit compose.yaml and reconcile the service with:
docker compose up -d SERVICEReplace SERVICE with the service name whose definition changed. Compose compares the existing service with the current definition and, when the configuration or image changed, stops and recreates the affected container while preserving mounted volumes.

Changes to ports, environment, volumes, command, image, restart policy, and similar service settings belong in compose.yaml. Once saved, run docker compose up -d SERVICE so Compose can apply the complete declaration rather than maintaining an undocumented manual edit.
Force or prevent recreation deliberately
Use --force-recreate when you need a replacement even though Compose does not detect a configuration or image difference:
docker compose up -d --force-recreate SERVICEUse --no-recreate only when you deliberately want existing containers left unchanged. That option is useful for a controlled exception, but it also means edits in the Compose file will not be applied to the running container.

Why docker compose restart did not apply your edits
docker compose restart stops and starts existing containers; it is not a configuration deployment command. Docker explicitly notes that changes made in the Compose file, including environment-variable changes, are not reflected after a restart. Use docker compose up -d SERVICE instead, allowing Compose to recreate the service when required.

When the service’s image must be rebuilt, Docker’s production workflow is:
docker compose build web
docker compose up --no-deps -d webThis rebuilds the web image and recreates only that selected service without starting its dependencies as part of the command. Use the service name from your own Compose file.
What recreation changes about data and networking
Mounted volumes are preserved; the container is not
Compose preserves mounted volumes during service recreation. The volume remains the durable location for application files, while the container object is replaced. The same principle applies to the CLI workflow when you explicitly attach the existing named or bind-mounted volume to the replacement.
The service name remains stable, but the IP address changes
After Compose recreates a service, it retains its stable service name but receives a new IP address. Connections to the old container close. Clients should resolve the service name and reconnect instead of pinning the previous IP address. This is especially important for application configuration, scripts, and monitoring checks that may have cached an address.

Plan for a stop-and-recreate boundary
Replacement necessarily introduces a point at which the old container stops and the new one starts. Schedule or communicate that boundary according to the application’s tolerance for interruption, and make sure clients can reconnect. The exact interruption depends on image startup time, health checks, and application behavior; Docker’s command semantics do not promise a universal duration.

Use docker compose run when you need a one-off container to test a different command, temporary environment, port, volume, user, or entrypoint without changing the long-running service definition. It is useful for diagnosis and trial changes that you do not yet want to commit to compose.yaml.

A one-off container does not publish the service’s configured ports by default. Add --service-ports to use the service’s port mappings, or provide an explicit --publish option for the temporary container. Without one of those choices, a test process may be running successfully while remaining unreachable from the host through the service’s normal port.
In-place update or replacement: choosing the right operation

The practical rule is simple: if Docker documents the setting for docker update, update it in place; otherwise, describe the desired container completely and replace the old one.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Running docker start with new flags
docker start app only starts the existing container. It does not accept or apply new run options. Recreate the container when the requested option is not supported by docker update.
Deleting the container before securing its data
Removing a container can discard files stored only in its writable layer. Move important state to a named volume or bind mount and attach that storage to the replacement before deleting the old object.
Changing Compose and then using only restart
Restarting does not reconcile Compose-file edits. Run docker compose up -d SERVICE; add --force-recreate if a replacement is intentionally required despite no detected difference.
Forgetting the complete option set during replacement
A replacement that includes only the newly desired flag can silently omit existing ports, environment variables, mounts, or security settings. Keep a complete, repeatable docker run command or Compose definition and change that source instead of reconstructing options from memory.

Hard-coding the old Compose IP address
Recreated services receive new IP addresses. Configure clients to use the Compose service name and reconnect after replacement rather than storing the old address.
Assuming a one-off Compose run publishes ports
docker compose run does not publish the service’s configured ports unless you add --service-ports or an explicit --publish. Include the appropriate option when the test must be reachable from the host.
