Roku’s network menus let you test connectivity, but they do not provide a DNS-server field. If you need to try different DNS servers, make the change on the router or ISP gateway that supplies the Roku’s network. The exact menu depends on the equipment and firmware; some gateways hide the setting entirely.

First establish that DNS is relevant. On the Roku, open Settings > Network > Check connection. The result distinguishes a failure to reach the router from a device that reaches the router but cannot reach the internet. Test another device on the same network and restart the Roku and network equipment before editing DNS. A DNS change cannot repair weak Wi-Fi, an incorrect password, a failed modem, or an ISP outage.

What changing DNS can—and cannot—fix

DNS translates a service name into an internet address. A Roku may be connected to Wi-Fi and still fail when it cannot resolve or reach online services. Changing the DNS service used by your network can help when name resolution is the specific failure, but it is only one layer of the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku’s official connection guidance covers testing and recovery rather than editing DNS on the player. Use Roku’s connection-check instructions to see whether the player can contact the router and the internet. For Wi-Fi symptoms, Roku also provides wireless-connection troubleshooting and a guide for Roku devices that will not connect to Wi-Fi.

Changing DNS is therefore a router-side troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed Roku repair. If every device in the home is offline, investigate the modem, gateway, or ISP first. If only the Roku is affected, verify its network selection and signal before altering a setting that may affect the whole household.

Diagnose the failure before opening router settings

Run Roku’s built-in connection check

  1. From the Roku Home screen, select Settings.
  2. Choose Network.
  3. Select Check connection and let the test finish.

Record whether the failure is at the router/Wi-Fi stage or at the internet stage. A router-stage failure means the Roku is not properly associated with the local network; DNS is downstream from that problem and will not help yet. An internet-stage failure means the Roku reached the local router but could not reach online services, which can involve the ISP, gateway, DNS, or another upstream fault.

Compare another device on the same network

Use a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi network, not cellular data or a guest network. Open a normal public website. If that device also fails, the issue is broader than Roku. If other devices work, the Roku may be using the wrong SSID, have a weak signal, retain stale network information, or have an app-specific problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart in the least disruptive order

  • Confirm the Roku is connected to the intended Wi-Fi name and that the password has not changed.
  • Restart the Roku using its power or system-restart option. If it is powered by USB, unplug it briefly only after normal restart options are unavailable.
  • Restart the router and modem or gateway. Allow the equipment to finish booting before retesting.
  • Move the Roku or wireless equipment to improve signal if the connection test reports weak Wi-Fi.

Roku’s Wi-Fi guidance, listed as last updated September 9, 2026 on the retrieved support page, describes signal and equipment checks that should precede a DNS change.

Prepare before changing a shared network setting

A router DNS change can affect televisions, phones, computers, cameras, and smart-home devices, not just the Roku. Before signing in, write down the router manufacturer, exact model, firmware version if shown, and whether it is operating as a router, access point, or mesh satellite. Record the current DNS mode and addresses, and make sure you know the administrator login. The administrator password may not be the same as the Wi-Fi password.

Make the change while connected locally to the main network, preferably with a computer connected by Ethernet if one is available. Keep the router’s manual or support page open for the exact model. A saved screenshot of the original values gives you a simple rollback path. Warn other household users that saving the setting may briefly interrupt every client.

Identify the device that actually controls DNS

Many homes have either a standalone router connected to a separate modem or an ISP gateway that combines modem and router functions. The gateway is the device normally assigning local addresses and forwarding traffic. Write down its manufacturer and exact model before following any menu path; two products from the same company can place DNS controls in different sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standalone router

If an Ethernet cable runs from a modem to a separate router’s internet/WAN port, the router usually controls the household’s client DNS settings. Its administration may be available through a mobile app, a local web address, or both. Connect a phone or computer to that router while making changes.

ISP gateway

An ISP gateway may expose only a simplified customer interface. The provider can lock DNS to its own service, hide advanced controls, or require a support request. Do not assume that a publicly documented router menu applies to an ISP-supplied unit. Ask the ISP whether custom DNS is supported and whether a change would affect all clients or only a selected network.

Mesh and access-point arrangements

Mesh systems often use an app and may put client DNS under DHCP or LAN settings rather than under the internet connection page. In access-point mode, another upstream router may be the device that actually assigns DNS. If you edit the satellite or access point but clients still receive values from the upstream gateway, the Roku will not change. Trace which device provides DHCP before saving anything.

Understand which DNS setting you are changing

Router interfaces commonly expose DNS in one of two functional areas:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Internet or WAN DNS: controls how the router itself obtains or uses name servers on its upstream connection. Depending on the model, this may also be handed to clients.
  • DHCP or LAN DNS: supplies DNS-server addresses to devices when they request a local network lease. This is often the setting that directly determines what a Roku receives.

The labels and behavior are model-specific. A router can show both areas, show only one, or replace them with an automatic-versus-manual selector. Read the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and firmware, and note the original automatic values before saving anything.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Also check the scope shown beside the field. Some equipment applies a manual value to every LAN, while other systems let you choose a primary, guest, or IoT network separately. A Roku connected to a guest SSID may therefore keep receiving different DNS information even after you change the main network.

General procedure for changing DNS on a router

  1. Connect locally. Join the router’s main network with a phone or computer. Avoid making the change over a remote-management session unless you understand how to recover access.
  2. Open management. Launch the router’s official app or local administration page. Sign in with the administrator credentials; these are different from the Wi-Fi password on some equipment.
  3. Locate the DNS control. Look under labels such as Internet, WAN, Network, DHCP, or LAN. Use the model’s support instructions rather than a universal address or menu sequence.
  4. Record the current mode. Note whether DNS is automatic, inherited from the ISP, or manually entered. Save a screenshot or write down existing values so you can roll back.
  5. Choose manual DNS only when appropriate. Enter the DNS server addresses supplied by the service you intend to use. Enter each value in its own primary or secondary field; do not put explanatory text into the address boxes.
  6. Save or apply. The router may reload its internet connection, restart a service, or briefly disconnect every client. Wait for the status indicator to return to normal.
  7. Refresh client leases. If the router does not automatically renew DHCP information, disconnect and reconnect the Roku to Wi-Fi or restart it. Other household devices may also need to reconnect before they receive the new DNS values.
  8. Retest. Run Settings > Network > Check connection on the Roku and test another device. Check the specific app or content that originally failed.

Do not change unrelated WAN, DHCP-range, security, or bridge-mode fields while looking for DNS. A typo in a network address can disconnect the entire home and make router recovery harder.

Examples of model-specific menus

These examples illustrate why a universal path would be misleading. They apply to the named product families and are not instructions for every router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Equipment family Documented path What it demonstrates
TP-Link wireless routers Advanced > Network > Internet in the web-management interface DNS can appear with the internet/WAN connection settings. See TP-Link’s router DNS instructions.
TP-Link Deco systems More > Advanced > DHCP Server in the Deco app Mesh systems may expose client DNS through DHCP/LAN settings instead. See TP-Link’s Deco DNS instructions.

If your interface does not match either example, stop searching by guesswork and use the manufacturer’s current manual. Firmware updates, regional editions, access-point mode, and ISP customization can change the available controls.

Choose the right route when the menu is missing

Route When it fits What to check
Change DNS on the current router or gateway The device exposes a manual DNS control that covers the Roku’s network Whether the field is WAN or DHCP/LAN, which clients receive it, and whether the change affects every household device
Ask the ISP to expose or change DNS The provider manages the gateway or has restricted advanced settings Whether custom DNS is supported, whether support must make the change, and which networks or clients it affects
Use a compatible configurable router The existing gateway cannot provide the required control ISP compatibility, whether the gateway must use bridge or passthrough mode, the new router’s DNS controls, and correct wiring

Adding a router is optional, not the first troubleshooting step. Confirm that the ISP allows customer equipment and understand whether the existing gateway can be bridged or must remain in a compatible configuration. Incorrectly combining two routing devices can create double NAT or leave the Roku on the wrong network. A Wi-Fi router with configurable DNS is a reasonable product-search description, but choose only after confirming compatibility; no particular model is required for Roku.

Questions to ask the ISP

  • Does this gateway model permit customer-selected DNS servers?
  • Can support change the setting remotely, and does it apply to the main, guest, and other networks?
  • Is bridge or passthrough mode supported if I add my own router?
  • Will using customer equipment affect support, voice service, or other gateway features?

Troubleshoot according to the connection-check result

The Roku cannot reach the router or Wi-Fi

Recheck the network name and password, confirm that the Roku is within usable wireless range, and restart both the Roku and network equipment. If the router uses separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, make sure the Roku is joining the intended one. DNS settings cannot help until the player has a local connection and an address from the router.

The Roku reaches the router but not the internet

Test another device on the same network and open a public website. If all devices fail, inspect the modem or gateway’s internet status and contact the ISP when service remains unavailable. If the failure is isolated to the Roku, verify its network selection, restart it, and repeat the connection test. A router-side DNS change is reasonable only when other evidence points toward name resolution; it is not proof that DNS is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other devices work, but Roku apps will not open or content will not load

Run the Roku test again, confirm the player is not on a guest or isolated network, and check whether one app or every online service is affected. Restarting the Roku can clear a stale lease or temporary service state. If you change router DNS, test both the Roku and another client afterward so you can distinguish a DNS effect from a coincidental recovery.

The router has no editable DNS field

Check whether you are using an ISP gateway, an access point, or a restricted account. Contact the ISP and ask specifically whether customer DNS is supported on that model. If not, a compatible configurable router is an optional hardware solution, but verify equipment and bridge-mode requirements before buying or rewiring anything.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Verify the result and roll back safely

  1. Wait until the router reports a normal internet connection.
  2. Reconnect or restart the Roku so it requests current network information.
  3. Run Settings > Network > Check connection.
  4. Open the previously failing app or content and test a second online service.
  5. Check another device on the same network, especially if the DNS setting was delivered through DHCP.

If the result is worse, return the DNS mode to its recorded automatic setting or restore the original addresses, save, and reconnect clients again. If the router becomes unreachable, use its documented recovery process rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Keep a record of what was changed and when; it helps the ISP or router manufacturer identify the fault.

Do not confuse streaming speed with DNS health

Roku publishes example download-speed requirements of 3 Mbps for Standard Definition (SD), 5 Mbps for High Definition (HD), and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD. Roku presents these as streaming-bandwidth guidance; the retrieved support article does not state a publication year. App-specific requirements and other devices consuming bandwidth can affect playback. Meeting a speed threshold does not demonstrate that DNS is working, and changing DNS does not increase an undersized internet connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop changing settings

  • The Roku cannot associate with Wi-Fi or repeatedly loses signal.
  • Every device fails to reach the internet, indicating an ISP, modem, or gateway outage.
  • The router’s status shows no upstream connection after a restart.
  • The ISP does not support custom DNS on its gateway and you have no confirmed compatible-router plan.
  • The Roku connection test succeeds and only one app has a service-side problem.

In these cases, continue with Roku’s connection and Wi-Fi guidance or contact the ISP rather than repeatedly editing DNS. The useful boundary is simple: fix local Wi-Fi first, establish that the internet path works, then use router DNS controls only when the remaining symptoms justify that experiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter a DNS server directly on a Roku?

Roku’s documented network menus provide a connection check, not a DNS-server entry field. Configure DNS on the router or gateway that supplies the Roku’s network instead.

Which router menu should I use?

There is no universal path. DNS may be under Internet or WAN settings, or under DHCP/LAN settings that are distributed to clients. Use the manual for your exact model and firmware.

Will changing router DNS fix a Roku that will not connect to Wi-Fi?

No. A Wi-Fi association, password, signal, or router-stage failure occurs before DNS. Confirm the network and run Roku’s connection check first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will every device in my home use the new DNS?

Often, but not always. A router-wide or DHCP/LAN setting may affect all clients on a network, while some mesh systems let you select individual networks. Check the setting’s stated scope and reconnect clients.

What if my ISP gateway has no DNS option?

Ask the ISP whether custom DNS is supported or whether support can change it. A compatible configurable router is another option if the ISP permits it and the gateway can be configured correctly.

Do Roku’s 3 Mbps, 5 Mbps, and 25 Mbps figures prove that DNS is healthy?

No. Those are example streaming-bandwidth requirements for SD, HD, and 4K Ultra HD. They do not test name resolution or guarantee that an app will load.

How do I undo a DNS change?

Restore the recorded automatic mode or original addresses, save the router setting, reconnect or restart the Roku, and run the connection check again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Roku does not expose a DNS-editing control. Check the Roku’s connection result, test another device, and restart the network before changing anything. If DNS remains a plausible cause, change it on the router or gateway using the exact manufacturer instructions, refresh the Roku’s network lease, and retest. If the gateway hides the setting, ask the ISP about support or a compatible configurable router rather than guessing at menus or replacing equipment prematurely.
