Android has separate controls for interface scale, text size, in-app zoom, app aspect ratio, and automatic rotation. Use Display size when icons and controls are too large or small, Font size when only words need changing, an app’s own pinch or double-tap gesture for content inside that app, and Auto-rotate when the screen orientation is wrong. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so Settings search is the most reliable starting point.
Which Android setting should you change?
These controls affect different layers of the phone. Choosing the right one prevents a text-size change from unexpectedly rearranging icons, or an app zoom gesture from being mistaken for a system-wide scaling option.

Display size and Font size are independent sliders. You can enlarge text without enlarging icons, or change both if the entire interface is difficult to read. Font-size changes do not apply to every app because an app can use a fixed layout or implement its own text handling.

Use Settings search on any recent Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field and enter Display size. If you only want larger or smaller words, search for Font size instead.
- Open the matching result and move the slider. The preview shows how the selected size will look before you leave the page.
- Check several screens, including the home screen, Settings, notifications, and an app you use frequently. Move the slider again if controls become cramped or too much information disappears.
- To return display-size and text preferences to the device’s original setting, open the same page and select Reset settings.
Google’s general Accessibility Help identifies some of these instructions as applying to Android 13 and later. Older phones can use different wording or place the controls under an accessibility or display menu. Searching Settings avoids relying on one menu path that may not exist on your model.

Pixel menu path
On a Pixel phone, open Settings > Display & touch > Display size and text. The page contains separate controls for Font size and Display size:
- Move Font size when letters are the problem but icons and controls are already comfortable.
- Move Display size when buttons, icons, menus, and other interface elements need to be larger or smaller.
- Use the preview to judge whether text wraps, buttons remain visible, and lists still show enough items.
The exact labels can differ on Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other phones. If you cannot find the page, search each term separately rather than assuming your device lacks the feature.
Change font size quickly from Quick Settings
Google documents a Font size tile in Quick Settings. First adjust Font size in Settings; the tile is then added automatically. If it does not appear, edit Quick Settings and add the Font size tile if your phone offers it. The cited Google help page describes a slider that goes as high as 200%. That upper limit is the setting described by Google for that help page, not a promise that every manufacturer exposes the same range.

To use it, swipe down to open Quick Settings, swipe again if necessary to show all tiles, tap Font size, and move the slider. This changes text, not the overall size of icons or controls; use Display size for those.
Understand what font scaling can and cannot do
System font scaling is cooperative: Android passes the selected size to apps, but each app decides how to lay out its interface. An app may honor the setting fully, apply it only to some labels, or keep certain text fixed. Large text can also wrap onto additional lines, making a button taller or causing a tightly constrained label to clip. If one app still has tiny text after you increase Font size, look for that app’s own text, accessibility, or display setting rather than repeatedly increasing the system slider.
When an enlarged label is cut off, try a slightly smaller Font size first and then check the app’s own settings. A Display size reduction can create more room for the app’s layout, but it also makes the rest of Android smaller. There is no universal Android switch that forces every app to redraw perfectly at every font scale.

Change only content inside an app
Use the app’s zoom gesture
If the phone’s interface is already the right size and only a map, webpage, image, or document is hard to read, use the app’s own zoom behavior:
- Open the page or content.
- Try a quick double-tap on the area you want to enlarge. Some pages, including supported maps and webpages, zoom this way.
- If double-tap does not work, place two fingers on the content and pinch outward to zoom in or pinch inward to zoom out.
- Release your fingers and pan around the enlarged content if the app permits it.
These gestures are page- or app-specific. They do not change Android’s Display size, do not enlarge the home screen, and may be disabled by the app. A webpage may also have its own browser zoom menu, while a video player may use a separate full-screen or fit-to-screen control.
Do not confuse zoom with app layout scaling
Zoom enlarges content within a view. It does not change the amount of screen an app is allowed to occupy. If an app has wide empty bars, cropped controls, or an unsuitable layout on a foldable, you are looking for an aspect-ratio or window-layout control, not a pinch gesture.
Change one app’s aspect ratio on a Pixel Fold
Google’s documented per-app aspect-ratio control is an experimental Pixel Fold feature. It is not a general Android setting and should not be expected on ordinary Pixel phones, tablets, or other manufacturers’ devices.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Aspect ratio (experimental).
- Select the app you want to change.
- Choose one of the available options: App default, Full screen, or Half screen.
Only one app’s aspect ratio can be changed at a time through this documented control. The app restarts when you apply a different option, so save a document, finish a message, or otherwise preserve unsaved work first. Google cautions that some apps may not be optimized for particular ratios; a full-screen choice can stretch a layout, crop controls, or leave unusable spacing instead of improving it. Return to App default if the result is worse.

Toggle Auto-rotate in Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Find Auto-rotate. You may need to swipe down a second time to see all tiles.
- Tap the tile to turn automatic rotation on or off. When it is off, the phone stays in its current orientation unless you rotate it manually using a supported prompt or an app-specific control.
Some phones label the off state Portrait or Landscape rather than Auto-rotate. The tile’s wording and icon are manufacturer-dependent, but it is normally in Quick Settings and can often be moved when you edit the panel.

Use Display settings instead
On a Pixel, the documented route is Settings > Display & touch > Auto-rotate screen. Turn the switch on or off. Other Android phones may place the switch under Display, Display & brightness, or a similarly named page. Searching Settings for auto-rotate or screen rotation is the quickest way to locate it.
Rotate a Pixel screen on demand while auto-rotate is off
Pixel phones can show a manual rotate control when automatic rotation is disabled. Rotate the phone, then tap the rotate button that appears in a corner of the screen. This changes the supported screen for that moment without enabling automatic rotation for everything else. If no prompt appears, the current app or screen may not support the feature, or the device may use different behavior in its Android version.
Why a particular app may ignore rotation
Auto-rotate is a system preference, not an order every app must obey. Google notes that most screens can rotate, but an individual app or screen may be locked to portrait or landscape. Streaming players, games, launchers, camera views, authentication screens, and some embedded webpages commonly choose their own orientation. If other apps rotate normally, the setting is working; the unchanging app is enforcing its own layout rule.
Also check whether you are viewing a pop-up, split-screen window, or foldable posture. A window can remain fixed even while the full display rotates. Close the temporary window, exit split screen, or change the device posture before testing again.
What to check before and after changing a setting
Decide the scope first. A global control is appropriate when every screen is hard to read; an in-app gesture is better when one map or webpage is the problem. For a foldable, aspect ratio changes are limited to the documented Pixel Fold feature. This scope check prevents a broad Display size change from fixing a single app while making the rest of the phone harder to use.
After moving a slider, inspect both short labels and longer text. A larger Font size can add lines, while a larger Display size can leave fewer rows visible in lists. Check the home screen, notifications, Settings, messaging, navigation, and one frequently used app. If a control is clipped, step back one position and look for an app-specific option.

Use the preview before leaving the Display size and text page, and remember that Reset settings returns the display-size and text preferences to the device’s original setting. Resetting is useful when several experiments have made the interface confusing, but it does not turn an app’s own zoom or orientation rule into a system setting.

Fix common display-size and rotation problems
Everything is too large and controls are cut off
- Return to Settings > Display size and text on Pixel, or search Settings for Display size on another phone.
- Reduce Display size one step; do not reduce Font size if the words themselves are comfortable.
- Reopen the affected app so it recalculates its layout.
- If only one app is affected, check that app for a layout, compact mode, or display setting instead of shrinking the entire phone.
Words are still too small
- Increase Font size, not merely Display size.
- Check the preview and a long paragraph to ensure line wrapping remains readable.
- Look for an in-app text-size or accessibility option when one app ignores the system value.
- For a single page or image, use the app’s double-tap or pinch zoom rather than changing global settings.
One app looks stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bars
- On a Pixel Fold, test App default, Full screen, and Half screen under Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio (experimental).
- Remember that changing the option restarts the app; save work before applying it.
- On other phones, the cited Google instructions do not establish a universal per-app aspect-ratio setting. Look for an app-specific display mode or accept the layout chosen by the developer.
- Do not expect pinch zoom to repair a window that is using the wrong aspect ratio.
Auto-rotate seems broken
- Open Quick Settings and verify that the tile says Auto-rotate, not a locked Portrait or Landscape mode.
- Test a different app known to support rotation. If only one app stays fixed, it may be locking orientation.
- Exit a pop-up or split-screen view and test the full-screen app.
- On Pixel with auto-rotate off, turn the phone and look for the manual rotate prompt in a corner.
- If the menu path in a guide does not match your phone, search Settings for “auto-rotate screen”; Android version and manufacturer customizations change labels.
A practical setup for readability and control
For a phone that is generally hard to read, start with a moderate Font size increase and inspect notifications, messaging, navigation, and Settings. Add a Display size increase only if icons and controls also need enlargement. This two-slider approach preserves more content than making Display size large when the problem is text alone.
For occasional detail, leave global scaling alone and use an app’s zoom gesture on the specific map, webpage, or image. For a foldable app that does not use the available screen well, test the Pixel Fold aspect-ratio choices one at a time and return to App default when controls become distorted. For orientation, keep Auto-rotate off if you want a stable portrait screen and use the manual Pixel prompt when you need a single landscape view.
Android’s controls are intentionally separate: system UI scale, text scale, content zoom, app aspect ratio, and orientation solve different problems. Matching the symptom to the control gives you the desired change without making unrelated screens harder to use.
