DayZ has no single server-side difficulty slider. To make a server easier or harsher, combine rules in serverDZ.cfg with optional mission-specific values in cfggameplay.json. Stop the server, back up the active files, edit the configuration used by the selected mission, enable the gameplay JSON when needed, then restart and test with a connected client.
Where DayZ difficulty settings are stored
The setting you need depends on what “difficulty” means for your server. Camera restrictions, crosshair visibility, ambient personal light, server-level night lighting, respawn delay and several damage switches are controlled in serverDZ.cfg, the configuration file loaded beside the DayZ server executable. More granular gameplay behavior is held in a mission-level JSON file named cfggameplay.json.

Bohemia Interactive describes gameplay settings as a way for administrators to change game behavior by editing values in the gameplay settings JSON file. This split is why changing one file may appear to do nothing: the server can be loading another mission, the JSON may not be enabled, or a mission value may override a server-level value.
Before you edit anything
Configuration mistakes can prevent a server from starting or silently leave the old behavior in place. Complete these checks first:

- Stop the DayZ server cleanly. Do not edit a file while the process is writing persistence data.
- Make a dated copy of the active
serverDZ.cfgand the complete mission folder. Keep the original names and paths in the backup. - Open
serverDZ.cfgand find itsclass Missionsblock. Record the mission name selected there; that is the mission whose files you must edit. - Confirm which executable command or startup profile is used. The intended configuration should be explicit, for example
-config=serverDZ.cfg. - Use the template shipped with your DayZ server version and map. Do not invent JSON keys from a different release or map.
On a self-hosted installation you normally have direct access to these files. A rented server may instead provide a control panel with equivalent switches. Panel labels and available fields vary by provider, so use the provider’s current documentation and still verify the resulting behavior in game.
Change the core rules in serverDZ.cfg
Open the configuration file beside the server executable in a plain-text editor. DayZ server parameters use assignments ending in semicolons. Keep existing comments and formatting where possible, and change only the values you intend to test.

Use the exact parameter spelling and syntax already present in your configuration. A value of 1 is the documented enabled form for the switches above; do not assume that an unrelated numeric value creates an intermediate difficulty level. These are individual rules, not points on a universal difficulty scale.

Example server-level block
The following illustrates the documented style. Merge the lines into your existing file rather than replacing the whole configuration:

disableContainerDamage = 1;The example’s respawnTime value is simply a two-minute configuration example; choose the number that fits your server rules. The other lines demonstrate the documented switches and do not imply that every server should enable all of them.
Enable and edit cfggameplay.json
Use the mission JSON when the behavior you want is represented by gameplay settings rather than a top-level server parameter. The file is map-specific and mission-specific.

- With the server stopped, locate the template shipped with the map. For Chernarus, Bohemia’s layout uses
DZworldschernaruspluscecfggameplay.json; use the equivalent template for another map. - Copy that template into the mission folder selected in the
class Missionsblock. A valid file in a different mission directory has no effect. - In
serverDZ.cfg, add or setenableCfgGameplayFile = 1;. - Open the copied JSON in an editor that can show braces and quotation marks clearly. Preserve valid JSON: use double quotes for property names and string values, commas between properties, and no trailing comma after the final property in an object.
- Change only keys present in the template for your map and game version. Typical top-level sections include
GeneralData,PlayerData,WorldsData,BaseBuildingDataandMapData. - Save the file, validate that it remains well-formed JSON, and keep a copy of the previous working version.
Why the enable line matters
Copying the file alone does not activate it. The server must have enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; in serverDZ.cfg before it loads the mission gameplay file. If the line is missing, set to a disabled value, or placed in a configuration that the server is not actually using, edits in cfggameplay.json will be ignored.
Understand overlapping values
Some behavior exists in both configuration layers. Bohemia documents that when the gameplay file is enabled, WorldsData::lightingConfig in cfggameplay.json overrides the server-level lighting value. Therefore, if you set lightingConfig = 1; in serverDZ.cfg but the active mission JSON contains a different WorldsData value, the mission JSON wins. Check both locations before diagnosing a lighting change as broken.
Practical difficulty profiles
There is no official “easy,” “normal” or “hard” preset to select. Build a profile from the individual rules and document every change so players know what your server means by difficulty.

First-person survival profile
- Set
disable3rdPerson = 1;to enforce first person. - Set
disableCrosshair = 1;to remove the reticle. - Set
disablePersonalLight = 1;to remove the player’s ambient light. - Set the applicable lighting value to the darker option, checking
WorldsData::lightingConfigin the enabled mission JSON for an override.
This combination changes information and visibility rather than loot or enemy strength. Test it at night with a client, because a setting can be active while the visual difference is subtle on a particular map or weather cycle.
Longer-consequence death profile
- Choose a higher
respawnTimein seconds inserverDZ.cfg. - Leave camera and crosshair rules unchanged if you want the challenge to come from downtime rather than aiming restrictions.
- Tell players the exact delay in your server rules; the setting is a wait after death, not a change to character persistence.
Protected-building profile
- Set
disableBaseDamage = 1;to prevent damage to bases. - Set
disableContainerDamage = 1;when containers should receive the corresponding protection. - Check mission-level base-building settings as well if your template exposes related behavior; keep the active mission file and server-level intent consistent.
Protection switches change structural damage rules; they do not automatically make every player interaction safe. Test the specific object types and actions that matter to your community.

One current hosting reference lists third-person, crosshair, personal-light, lighting, time-acceleration and persistence controls as panel-managed options. Treat that as an example of what a panel may expose, not a universal interface. If a panel offers a switch, determine whether it writes serverDZ.cfg, cfggameplay.json, or a provider-specific layer before editing files manually; otherwise one method may overwrite the other.

Restart and verify the result
- Save both files and confirm that the edited
cfggameplay.jsonis inside the mission selected byclass Missions. - Start the server with the same configuration path intended for production, such as
-config=serverDZ.cfg. - Watch the startup output for configuration or JSON parse errors. A failure to start usually means a syntax problem, an invalid key for that version, or a malformed path.
- Connect with a client and test the behavior that changed: switch the camera, check for a crosshair, observe personal light and night visibility, die and measure the respawn wait, or interact with a base and container as appropriate.
- If the behavior is unchanged, stop the server again before making another edit. Verify the active mission, the enable line, and any overlapping value in the mission JSON.
A restart is required after configuration edits. Existing clients do not provide a reliable indication that a new value has loaded until the server has been restarted and the client has reconnected.

Troubleshoot settings that appear ignored
The JSON change has no effect
- Confirm
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;is in the loadedserverDZ.cfg. - Check that the file is named exactly
cfggameplay.jsonand is in the active mission folder, not merely in the map’s template directory. - Compare the mission name in
class Missionswith the folder you edited. - Validate JSON punctuation and restore the last known-good backup if the server reports a parse error.
Lighting does not match the server-level value
Inspect WorldsData::lightingConfig in the enabled mission file. That mission-level value takes precedence over the server-level lightingConfig when both are present and the gameplay file is enabled.
The server starts, but the old camera or crosshair rule remains
- Verify that you edited the
serverDZ.cfgfile passed through the startup command, rather than a spare copy. - Check the parameter spelling, semicolon and value.
- Fully restart the server and reconnect; changing a file while the process remains online does not reload it.
- If a hosting panel is active, check whether it rewrote the file during the restart and use one management method consistently.
The server will not start after an edit
- Restore the backed-up configuration to bring the service online.
- Reapply one change at a time, restarting after each change.
- For JSON, use the map’s shipped template and remove only the last edit if the syntax checker or startup log identifies a malformed object.
- Keep a change log with the date, file, key and old/new value so you can reverse a problematic rule quickly.
Maintenance practices for a stable ruleset
- Keep the server configuration and mission JSON backups together because they work as a pair.
- When updating DayZ or changing maps, obtain the new map-and-version template before carrying settings forward. Keys and defaults can differ between releases.
- Record whether a value is server-wide or mission-specific, and note any known override such as the lighting precedence.
- Announce disruptive changes such as first-person enforcement, darker nights or longer respawn waits before enabling them for an established community.
- After every update, test at least one daytime and one nighttime session, a death-and-respawn cycle, and the building or container interactions affected by your chosen rules.
Thinking in terms of independent rules is the reliable way to tune DayZ difficulty. Decide which player advantage or delay you want to change, edit the configuration layer that owns it, enable the mission file when required, and verify the live server rather than relying on a saved text file.
