On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, the default browser is the app that opens when you tap a web link in Messages, email, social media, or another app. You can change it to Samsung Browser, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another installed browser without changing the browser’s own settings.
On current Galaxy software, use Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Browser app.
Change the default browser on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the browser you want to use.
The selected app now handles web links. For example, if you choose Chrome, tapping a link in an email or text message should open that link in Chrome instead of Samsung Browser.

Set Samsung Browser as the default
Samsung’s current support instructions refer to the app as Samsung Browser. On some older Galaxy devices and in older Samsung documentation, it may be called Samsung Internet Browser.

- Go to Settings → Apps → Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Tap Samsung Browser or Samsung Internet Browser, depending on the label shown on your device.
You can also see a default-browser prompt the first time you open Samsung Browser. Review the terms, tap Continue, and follow the prompt to make it the default. If you tap Not now, you can still change the setting later through the Settings app.
Set Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another browser as the default
The process is the same for any browser:
- Install the browser you want to use if it is not already on the device.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Choose the installed browser.
Only browsers installed on the Galaxy device appear in the selection list. If Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another preferred app is missing, install it first from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store, where available, and then return to the default-app screen.
What changes after you select a browser?
Changing the default browser changes which app opens ordinary web links. It does not automatically move bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, or open tabs from one browser to another.
For example, setting Firefox as the default means a link tapped in Gmail, Samsung Messages, or another app will normally open in Firefox. It does not copy Chrome’s saved passwords into Firefox. Browser-specific data remains in the browser where it was saved unless you separately use that browser’s sync or import tools.

If you cannot find “Choose default apps”
Samsung changes menu labels and layouts between Galaxy models, Android versions, and One UI releases. The current Samsung U.S. and Canadian path is:
Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Browser app
Older Galaxy software may instead use:
Settings → Apps → ⋮ (three dots) → Default apps → Browser app
In particular, older guides often say to look for Default apps. On newer Galaxy devices, Samsung uses Choose default apps without requiring the three-dot menu.

If the menus still do not match, open Settings and use the search button or search field. Search for default apps or browser app, then open the matching Settings result.
Common problems
The browser I want is not listed
The browser must be installed before it can be selected. Install it, open it once if requested, and check Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Browser app again.
Links still open in the old browser
Return to the browser-selection screen and confirm that the intended app is selected. Then test with a normal web link from another app. Some apps open links inside their own built-in web viewer or have an in-app setting that overrides the usual browser behavior; those links may not behave like links opened through the system.
I accidentally cleared app data
Clearing a browser’s app data is not the normal way to change the default browser. It resets that app and can remove its personal settings and saved app data. Use Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Browser app instead.

The browser prompt never appears
You do not need the first-launch prompt. Open the Settings path directly and select the browser there. The prompt is only one way to choose a default.
Do you need a command?
No. Samsung documents this as a graphical Settings change, so no command-line syntax or computer connection is required.

The exact app names and menu appearance can vary by device model, region, and software version, but the browser choice is made from the default-app settings—not from the browser’s own settings.

What is the current path to change the default browser on a Samsung Galaxy?
Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Choose default apps, tap Browser app, and select the installed browser you want to use.

Why does my Galaxy phone say “Default apps” instead of “Choose default apps”?
Older Galaxy software may use Settings → Apps → three dots → Default apps → Browser app. Newer Samsung software generally uses Choose default apps without the three-dot menu.
Can I choose a browser that is not installed?
No. Only installed browser apps appear in the Browser app list. Install the browser first, then select it from the default-app settings.
Will changing the default browser transfer my bookmarks and passwords?
No. Changing the default only determines which app opens web links. Bookmarks, passwords, history, and tabs remain in their original browser unless you separately import or sync them.
Do I need to clear Samsung Browser data before choosing another browser?
No. Clearing app data is unnecessary and can remove that browser’s saved app data. Change the browser through Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Browser app.
