To change subtitles while a Crunchyroll video is playing, open the player’s gear icon, choose Subtitles/CC, and select an available language. For a lasting default, use Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language on the website or the matching Subtitle/CC Language setting in the mobile app. Subtitle styling is separate: edit it in web profile preferences, or use your device’s accessibility caption controls where supported. The exact tracks, menus, and styling options depend on the title, season, episode, region, and device.
What you can change on Crunchyroll
Crunchyroll has three separate controls that are easy to confuse:
- Current-video language: changes the subtitle track for the episode you are watching.
- Default subtitle language: tells Crunchyroll which language to try when future videos start.
- Caption appearance: changes visual properties such as font and background or window color. It does not create a language track that the title does not provide.
Language tracks are title-specific. A show may list a language while one season or episode lacks it, and licensing can make the same language available in one country but not another. Crunchyroll’s language-availability guidance explains these limitations in its show-language article.

On supported devices, Crunchyroll Help says the subtitle-language feature works across supported devices. The controls are still not identical on every platform, so use the instructions for the device on which you are watching.

Change the subtitle language for the video playing now
This is the fastest method when you want a different language for only the current episode.
- Open the episode or other video on Crunchyroll and start playback.
- Move the pointer over the video on the website, or tap the player controls in the app, to reveal the playback toolbar.
- Select the gear or Settings icon.
- Choose Subtitles/CC.
- Select the language shown in the list. The player applies the new track to the current video.
If the language is not listed, the player cannot select it for that video. Do not assume that changing the account preference will add it; a preference only chooses among tracks the title actually supplies.
When subtitles cannot be turned off
In some regions, certain titles with Japanese audio require subtitles to remain enabled. If the player offers languages but no off option, that restriction may be intentional rather than a malfunction. Crunchyroll documents this regional behavior in its subtitle-language instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
Changing back after a temporary selection
A choice made in the player is the quickest way to test another track. If you want your usual language again, reopen Settings > Subtitles/CC and select it. If you want that choice to carry into later videos, save it as the account default instead of relying only on the current-player selection.
Set a default subtitle language
A default saves you from making the player selection every time a new video starts. It still cannot override a title’s available tracks, season-level differences, or regional licensing.
Website
- Sign in to Crunchyroll in your browser.
- Click your avatar.
- Select Settings.
- Open Preferences.
- Find Subtitle/CC Language and select your preferred language.
- Return to playback and test a new episode. If that episode offers the chosen track, Crunchyroll uses the preference automatically.
The account setting is a default, not a translation service. When a selected language is absent from an episode, another available track may be used or subtitles may follow the title’s normal behavior.
Mobile app
- Open the Crunchyroll app and sign in.
- Tap your avatar to open the account and settings area.
- Select Subtitle/CC Language.
- Choose the language you want as the default.
- Start an episode and open the player’s Subtitles/CC menu if you need to confirm or change the track for that video.
The website and mobile paths are described by Crunchyroll Help in the same subtitle-language guide. A setting saved on one account is intended to prevent repeated selections, but the available list remains governed by the show and your region.
Default setting versus current-video setting
Use the player menu when you need an immediate, one-episode change. Use Subtitle/CC Language in your profile when you are tired of repeating that choice. Neither control guarantees a track on every show. Always treat the episode’s own menu as the final check.
Customize subtitle and closed-caption appearance
Choosing a language and changing its appearance are different tasks. Appearance controls affect how text is rendered; they do not change the words or add captions to a video.

Website profile controls
- Open the profile you want to edit.
- Click the avatar, then select Settings.
- Open Preferences.
- Select the subtitle or closed-caption appearance option.
- Adjust the available controls, such as text font and background or window color.
- Save or leave the settings as prompted, then reload playback to check readability.
Crunchyroll’s current instructions for these profile-based controls are in How to set custom closed captions on Crunchyroll. The exact list of controls can change with the service interface, so use the labels displayed in your account rather than expecting every device to show the same options.
These settings are useful when text blends into a bright scene or when you need a different font treatment. They do not make a subtitle larger or more visible in a player that does not support the relevant control, and they cannot convert a subtitle into a closed-caption track.
Mobile and other app devices
For app caption styling, Crunchyroll directs viewers to the device’s own accessibility settings where those controls are supported. Open the operating system’s accessibility area, find caption or subtitle preferences, and change the available font, size, color, background, or window options there. The operating system may apply those choices to multiple apps, not just Crunchyroll; check the device preview or another video if you need to confirm the scope.
If you change a device setting and see no difference, check whether the track is a subtitle track or a closed-caption track and whether that app honors system styling. A device can expose caption controls without every streaming app using every option.
LG TV
Crunchyroll’s LG TV help distinguishes closed captions from subtitles. The player includes a Closed Caption Styling option for captions. Subtitles that are built into the video cannot be restyled through that LG player menu. If a styling control is missing, first determine whether you are viewing a closed-caption track or a subtitle track before troubleshooting the television.
This distinction explains why a font or background change may work for one program but not another. The setting applies to the type of text the player identifies as captions; it is not a universal overlay for every subtitle file.

A language listed for a series may not cover every season or episode. Availability can also vary by region because of licensing. These qualifications are documented in Crunchyroll’s language-availability help.

The details page can list both audio and subtitle languages. Selecting a dubbed audio track does not guarantee that the same episode has closed captions. Treat the audio-language list and subtitle-language list as separate inventories, then confirm the subtitle track in the player.
This matters when you switch from Japanese audio to a dub and expect captions to remain available. A dubbed episode may have no captions, or it may offer an English CC track only. The audio choice and the caption choice are independent menus and should be checked separately.
Why a language or caption track is missing
The title, season, or episode does not include it
The most common explanation is that the desired track was never supplied for that particular video. A show-level language label is not a promise that every installment carries the track. Check More Details and then the player menu for the exact episode.
Regional licensing limits the track
Rights can differ by viewing location. Two viewers watching the same series in different regions may see different subtitle lists. A VPN can also interfere with Crunchyroll’s ability to determine your location and is specifically included in the service’s web troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe dubbed episode has no captions
Crunchyroll says captions are not always available on dubbed episodes. Some titles provide an English CC track, but it appears only where the title offers it. If the dubbed video has no English CC entry, switching subtitle language or changing appearance cannot create one.
Subtitles are hidden by a browser or connection issue
If a track should be present but does not render on the website, use the following sequence from Crunchyroll’s troubleshooting article:
- Turn off any VPN and reload the episode.
- Open the same episode in an incognito or private window. If captions appear there, a browser extension or stored site data may be interfering.
- Disable extensions selectively, especially those that modify pages, video, privacy, or translation, and test again.
- Update your browser or switch to another supported browser.
- Test the episode on another device to separate an account or title issue from a browser-specific problem.
- If the problem remains, contact Crunchyroll support and include the episode title, the language you expected, and your viewing location.
These steps and the information to provide support are listed in Subtitles are not showing up on web.
The preference was saved, but the next episode differs
First compare the next episode’s language list with the previous one. A saved default only selects a track when that track exists. If the title, season, region, or episode changed, a different list is normal. Open the player menu to see what is actually available before changing account settings again.

Choose the right instructions for your goal
| Goal | Where to start | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use another language for this episode | Player gear or Settings > Subtitles/CC | The subtitle track for the current video | Only languages offered for that video appear |
| Stop selecting a language repeatedly | Avatar > Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language on the website | Your account’s default preference | It cannot add a missing track |
| Set the default in the mobile app | Avatar > Subtitle/CC Language | Your mobile account preference | The episode still controls which tracks exist |
| Change text styling on the website | Profile avatar > Settings > Preferences > subtitle/caption appearance | Available font and background or window settings | Styling does not translate or create captions |
| Style captions on an LG TV | Player > Closed Caption Styling | Closed-caption presentation | Built-in subtitles cannot be restyled there |
| Use television accessibility styling | Device accessibility caption settings, where supported | System-level caption presentation | Menus and scope vary by device |
This distinction prevents a common dead end: changing profile appearance settings when the actual problem is that the episode has no subtitle track, or changing the language preference when the problem is unreadable text.
A practical troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the scope: decide whether you need a one-episode change or an account default.
- Check the exact episode: inspect More Details and the player’s language list rather than relying on the series page alone.
- Check the region: licensing can remove a track even when another viewer or another country lists it.
- Check the track type: subtitles and closed captions may have different styling support, particularly on LG TV.
- Check the device: website profile controls, mobile accessibility settings, LG TV menus, and Android TV features are not interchangeable.
- Check the browser: for web-only failures, test private browsing, extensions, an updated or alternate browser, and another device.
- Report with useful details: give support the episode title, requested language, and viewing location.
Following the checklist in this order avoids spending time on appearance settings when the underlying issue is licensing or missing episode metadata.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect after saving a change
A player-level language selection should affect the video currently open. A profile default is used when a future video offers that language. Appearance changes affect the text presentation only where the relevant player or device supports them. If a new episode behaves differently, compare its own language list before assuming that the saved setting failed.
When a Japanese-audio title in your region requires subtitles, the absence of an off switch is expected. When a dubbed episode lacks an English CC track, the absence is a title limitation rather than a font or account-setting problem. Keeping those cases separate makes it clear whether you need a different track, a different styling control, or Crunchyroll support.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the subtitle language?
Start playback, open the gear or Settings icon, choose Subtitles/CC, and select one of the languages listed for that video.
Can I set a default subtitle language?
Yes. On the website, open your avatar, choose Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language, and select a language. In the mobile app, tap your avatar and open Subtitle/CC Language. The default works only when the episode offers that track.
Why is my language missing from the menu?
The episode may not include it, the season may differ from the rest of the series, or regional licensing may limit it. Check More Details and the exact episode’s player menu.
Why can’t I turn subtitles off?
Some Japanese-audio titles in certain regions require subtitles to remain on. If there is no off option, it may be an intentional regional rule.
Why does a dubbed episode have no captions?
Crunchyroll says captions are not available for every dubbed episode. English CC appears only on titles that provide it; a language preference cannot create captions.

Will changing appearance settings change the language?
No. Appearance controls change presentation such as font and background or window color. Choose a language separately from the player’s Subtitles/CC menu.
What should I send Crunchyroll support?
Include the episode title, the language you expected, and your viewing location. For web issues, also mention whether private browsing, another browser, or another device changed the result.
