Change the clan limit by editing ServerSettings.ini while the Conan Exiles server is stopped, then restart the server. The file is normally under ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.ini on Windows; Linux installations use a LinuxServer folder instead. The important complication is the setting name: guides and shared configuration files use several spellings, so confirm the key already generated in your own file before changing it.
What controls clan size
Clan size is a server-side setting, not an option in the normal in-game settings menu. It is stored in ServerSettings.ini inside the [ServerSettings] section. Every player must reconnect to the same server after the change is loaded; changing a local game option cannot alter the server’s limit.

The exact key name is not consistently documented. The following forms have appeared in hosting instructions or community-shared configuration files:

Those numbers are examples, not confirmed defaults. Do not assume that 10, 20, or 60 is the standard cap for your server. Open the file your installation generated and use the spelling already present there. If no clan-size line exists, add only the spelling supported by the configuration format used by your server or hosting panel; do not add all three variants and hope one wins.

Before you edit: a safe-change checklist
- Have administrator or file-manager access to the server.
- Know whether the server is panel-hosted or self-hosted, because the location and editing method differ.
- Stop the server completely before opening the file. A running server may write its in-memory settings back to disk during shutdown and overwrite a manual edit.
- Make a dated backup copy of
ServerSettings.ini. - Decide the target number of members and record the old value so you can roll back.
- Plan a restart window. A restart is the dependable way to make an
ServerSettings.inichange load.
Do not edit while players are connected. Ask the host panel for a clean stop rather than merely closing a browser tab or disconnecting from a remote console. Wait until the panel reports the process as stopped before saving the file.
Change the setting on a panel-hosted server
Most commercial game-server panels provide a browser-based file editor. The labels vary, but the route is usually a server page followed by Configuration Files, File Manager, or an equivalent configuration area.
- Stop the instance. Use the panel’s Stop control and wait for the status to change to offline or stopped.
- Open the configuration area. Choose the section that exposes configuration files, then open
ServerSettings.ini. If the panel offers both a raw file editor and a form-based settings editor, use the raw file only when the clan setting is not available as a clearly named field. - Find the section header. Search for
[ServerSettings]. The clan-size entry belongs below that header, not in a different section. - Find the existing key. Search for
MaxClanSize,ClanMaxSize, andclanMaxSize. If one is already present, change its number and preserve its spelling. - Add the key only when necessary. If the generated file has no clan-size line, place the single key supported by your server under
[ServerSettings], using a plain integer such asMaxClanSize=10only as an example. Do not leave duplicate entries with different spellings. - Save the file. Confirm that the panel reports a successful save. Some panels have a separate Apply or Save button below the editor.
- Restart the server. Start it again and wait for the server to finish loading before testing.
A panel may regenerate configuration files when you change settings through its own forms. If your manual line disappears, stop the server again, check whether the panel has a dedicated clan-size field, and use that field if it exists. Keep a copy of the edited file so you can compare what the panel changed.

ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.ini- Stop the Conan Exiles server process or service and wait until it has exited.
- Navigate to the server’s installation directory, then open
ConanSandbox,Saved,Config, andWindowsServer. - Copy
ServerSettings.inito a backup location. Include the date and the old clan-size value in the backup name. - Open the original file in a plain-text editor. Avoid a word processor that can insert rich-text formatting.
- Locate
[ServerSettings]and then locate the existing clan-size key, if present. - Replace only the numeric value. For example, changing
MaxClanSize=10toMaxClanSize=20changes the example value; it does not establish that 20 is your server’s default or recommended cap. - If no entry exists, add one line directly beneath
[ServerSettings]using the key spelling appropriate to your generated file. Keep the line in ordinary INI form: key, equals sign, integer. - Save the file without changing its name or extension, then restart the server.
If you run more than one Conan Exiles instance, verify the installation directory before editing. A common mistake is changing the file for a test server while players are joining a separate production instance.
Change the setting on a Linux server
Linux servers use the same configuration concept but normally place the file in a path containing LinuxServer rather than WindowsServer. Starting from the server’s installation directory, look for:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ServerSettings.iniThe exact parent directory depends on how you installed and launched the dedicated server. Use the file created by that running instance, not a similarly named template elsewhere. After stopping the service, back up the file, edit the clan-size line under [ServerSettings], save it as plain text, and restart the service. If a startup script points to a custom save directory, follow that script’s path rather than creating a second configuration tree.
How to edit the line without breaking the file
Keep one authoritative entry
INI files can contain many settings, and guides do not agree on the clan key’s capitalization or word order. Having several candidate lines makes troubleshooting harder and may cause the server to ignore the one you intended. Keep one clan-size entry, matching the spelling already used by the file or panel.

Use an integer
Enter a whole number appropriate for your community. Do not add quotation marks, a percent sign, a word such as “members,” or a second equals sign. A line should look like KeyName=number. The examples reported publicly include 10, 20, and 60; they are not validated defaults.
Do not move unrelated settings
Change only the clan-size line. Avoid reformatting the entire file, deleting comments, or converting line endings unless you have a specific reason. A small, isolated edit makes it possible to identify the cause if the server later rejects the configuration.

Instructions disagree about whether an administrative ApplyServerSettings command can apply changes immediately. One hosting guide describes immediate application for many settings, while another says edits to ServerSettings.ini take effect after a restart. Because the reports conflict and the clan key itself is not consistently documented, treat a full stop-and-start cycle as the safe method.
If your server’s own administration documentation explicitly supports ApplyServerSettings, you may use it as an additional step after saving, but still verify the file and perform a restart when practical. Do not assume that a command succeeded merely because it returned without an error: the running process may still be using its previous value.

Verify that the new limit loaded
- Wait until the server has completed its normal startup and is visible to players.
- Connect with an administrator account or a test account.
- Open the in-game clan interface and check the displayed roster or membership limit, if the interface exposes one.
- Test an invitation or membership change with a small group. If you are testing a boundary, do so with willing players and remove test members afterward.
- Stop the server once more and inspect
ServerSettings.ini. Confirm that the line still exists with the intended spelling and number.
If the in-game interface does not display a numeric cap, the file check and a controlled membership test are more useful than relying on a status message. Record the result, the date, and the server instance tested so a later panel update does not erase the change unnoticed.

The value reverted after you edited it
The most likely cause is editing while the server was still running. Stop it completely, make the edit, and restart. Some panels also rewrite files from stored form values; in that case, change the setting through the panel’s configuration form or disable its automatic overwrite feature if the host provides one.
The line is present but the cap does not change
Check that the line is below [ServerSettings], that there is only one clan-size key, and that you edited the file belonging to the active instance. Compare the spelling with the key already generated by your server. A line copied from another guide may be ignored if your installation expects a different key name.
You added a line and the server behaves as before
Adding a guessed key is not proof that the server recognizes it. Remove duplicate variants, restore the backup if necessary, and check the configuration file generated by a clean server start. If the host supplies a supported settings list, use the exact key shown there. No confirmed official Funcom reference establishes one universal spelling or default for every server build.

The server fails to start after editing
Restore the backup immediately, then start the server to confirm that the file was the cause. Reapply only the single clan-size change, using plain text and an integer. Look for accidental quotation marks, extra punctuation, a misspelled section header, or a file saved with a second extension such as .txt. If the panel keeps a change history, compare the failed file with the last known-good version.
Players still see the old limit
Make sure they reconnected after the restart. A live server process can continue using old values, and a player may be connected to a different server address or instance. Verify the active instance’s file and restart status before changing the number again.

Choosing a clan limit responsibly
There is no confirmed universal default or official one-size-fits-all recommendation in the available documentation. Choose a number based on how your community actually plays, then test it on the intended server. A smaller cap can preserve the distinction between several groups; a larger cap can reduce administrative overhead for a cooperative community. Those are policy choices, not technical defaults.
Write the decision into your server rules and announce the effective date. If you lower the cap after a clan already exceeds it, do not assume the game will automatically reorganize existing members; verify the result in a controlled test and explain any required player action before making the production change.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server.
- Replace the edited file with the dated backup, or change the clan-size value back to the recorded previous number.
- Save the file in the same location and with the same filename.
- Restart the server and reconnect to verify that the previous behavior is restored.
Keep the backup until players have confirmed that clan management works normally. If a panel restores an older copy automatically, preserve both versions and ask the host which configuration source is authoritative.
