What the three Blood Moon settings control

With BloodMoonFrequency_Min=2 and BloodMoonFrequency_Max=3, player reports describe a Blood Moon every two to three in-game days. Discussions commonly cite 10 and 18 as the default minimum and maximum, respectively, implying a ten-to-eighteen-day interval. Those defaults are not confirmed against a current official configuration file.
Before editing: protect the world and identify the right configuration
- Stop the server completely. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves or shuts down.
- Make a copy of the world and settings. Keep the original files so you can restore the prior behavior if Blood Moons stop appearing or the host rejects a value.
- Confirm that you are editing the server, not a local client. Blood Moon controls are server settings; changing a local game file will not change a hosted world.
- Record the current values. Write down the existing minimum, maximum, and buff values before making a test change.
- Check the host’s current labels. Several published guides are older, and a control panel may have renamed a preset, category, or file path.

How to change the settings in a hosted server panel
- Stop the server from the host control panel and wait until its status shows that it is offline.
- Enable the host’s custom-settings mode when required. On Shockbyte, the published procedure says to choose the Custom game settings preset before editing individual values. A standard or default preset may overwrite manual entries.
- Open the configuration editor. G-Portal places the Blood Moon controls under Basic settings, while other hosts expose them in an advanced settings page or as a text file.
- Enter the frequency values. Set
BloodMoonFrequency_Minto the shortest interval you will allow andBloodMoonFrequency_Maxto the longest interval. For the commonly cited two-to-three-day example, enter2and3. - Enter the buff value. Edit
BloodMoonBuffusing the host’s accepted numeric format. Citadel’s guide lists a range from0.1through5.0; do not assume that the number is a literal percentage unless your host describes it that way. - Save or apply the configuration. Wait for the panel to confirm the write before leaving the page.
- Start the server. Allow it to finish its startup sequence, then join the world and observe whether the values remain in the configuration.
If a panel has separate “save” and “restart” buttons, use both. A restart without saving can discard the edit; saving while the server is still running can be replaced by the server’s last stored configuration.

When a host exposes a raw file, locate the existing keys rather than creating duplicate entries. Preserve the file’s syntax, capitalization, commas, quotation marks, and numeric format. If the host regenerates the file from a web form, make the change in the form instead of editing a temporary copy that will be replaced.

Use a narrow interval for predictable events
A small gap between minimum and maximum makes the event easier to plan around. Entering 2 and 3 is the example repeatedly used in player discussions: the next Blood Moon is expected after roughly two to three in-game days. This is a cadence example, not a guarantee that the event occurs at exactly the same clock time or that every game version uses identical randomization.
Use a wider interval for less predictable nights
Increasing the distance between the two values leaves more uncertainty about when the next event will occur. The frequently cited defaults, 10 and 18, are described by players as a ten-to-eighteen-day cycle. Because those numbers are not confirmed in an official current file, check the values in your own server before treating them as the baseline.
Understand the unresolved minimum/maximum interpretation
Most discussions describe the fields as the minimum and maximum number of days between Blood Moons. One separate thread interprets the minimum as the mandatory gap before another event can occur and the maximum as the point at which the game forces one if random selection has not already triggered it. That alternative reading has not been confirmed, so use the two values to control the desired range rather than relying on a precise prediction of the random roll.

Citadel’s stated numeric limits
Citadel Servers’ guide says the frequency values can be set from 1 to 255. That is a host-guide limit, not a documented universal limit for every server build. If your panel rejects a value, follow the validation message and check the saved file instead of forcing an out-of-range number.

BloodMoonBuff is less clearly documented than the frequency fields. Citadel lists accepted values from 0.1 to 5.0. G-Portal describes the value as a percentage increase, but the available sources do not agree on whether the stored number is itself a percentage, a multiplier, or an internal factor. A player-posted default configuration uses 0.2, although that default has not been verified against a current official file.
- Do not convert
0.2to “20 percent” unless your host or game version explicitly defines that conversion. - Do not assume that doubling the number doubles every component of the Blood Moon effect; no authoritative formula is established in the available documentation.
- Change the buff separately from the frequency when testing. Isolating one variable makes it easier to identify whether an unexpected result comes from timing or strength.
- Stay inside the range your host accepts. A panel may impose stricter limits than the range reported by another provider.
Apply the change and verify it
- Reopen the settings after saving. Confirm that the three numbers are still present; this catches panels that silently discard invalid input.
- Start the server and join with an administrator account. Check the server’s startup or configuration view if the host provides one.
- Observe a complete cycle. For a two-to-three-day test, remain in the world long enough for the shortest possible interval to pass and continue until the longest interval has also passed.
- Record the result. Note the in-game day, time, and whether the Blood Moon appeared. A written log is more reliable than trying to remember a single event.
- Test the buff independently. If the event occurs but its effect seems unchanged, restore the previous value and retest with one controlled change. The sources do not provide a definitive in-game measurement method or formula for the buff.
Seeing the event once does not prove that every setting was accepted. Verify the persisted configuration and, where possible, compare more than one Blood Moon cycle.
Troubleshooting settings that do not work
The panel resets the values
On Shockbyte, failing to select Custom game settings is a documented reason the manual fields may not persist. Re-enable that preset, save again while the server is stopped, and restart only after the panel confirms the change. Other hosts may similarly regenerate a default file whenever a non-custom preset is active.
The file edit has no effect
Check that you changed the active server’s ServerGameSettings file, not a backup, local client file, or an unused instance. Confirm exact key spelling and capitalization, remove duplicate keys, preserve valid syntax, and inspect the file again after the server starts. A control panel can overwrite direct edits during startup.

Blood Moons still follow the old schedule
Allow the current in-game interval to expire before judging a frequency change. A server that was already waiting for an event may not immediately recalculate its timer. If several cycles remain unchanged, stop the server, verify the persisted values, and repeat the test with a clearly different interval.
A world appears to ignore the new values
One player reported that some setting changes applied only to newly created worlds. This is an anecdote, not a confirmed rule. Before deleting anything, back up the existing world and test the same configuration on a disposable new world if your host permits it. Keep the original world intact until you know whether the setting is world-specific.
Blood Moons disappear after any custom value
Another player reported that using any non-default setting removed the event entirely. No authoritative source confirms this as a general bug. If it happens, restore the recorded defaults, restart, and check whether Blood Moons return. Then test one field at a time, beginning with frequency, and report the exact game version, host, values, and world age to the host or game support channel.
The menu does not match an online guide
Several provider guides are old, and labels or file names can change between game and hosting-panel versions. Search the current panel for “Blood Moon,” “red moon,” or the exact keys BloodMoonFrequency_Min, BloodMoonFrequency_Max, and BloodMoonBuff. If none appears, do not invent a replacement key; ask the host which current configuration screen maps to the V Rising server settings.
A low-risk testing plan
- Capture a baseline: save the current file, world backup, and observed Blood Moon timing.
- Change only frequency: use a clearly distinguishable pair such as
2and3, leaving the buff unchanged. - Run through one full possible interval: measure from the last known Blood Moon until the maximum configured gap has passed.
- Change only the buff: once timing behaves as expected, alter
BloodMoonBuffwithin the host’s accepted range. - Roll back immediately if needed: stop the server, restore the backed-up file or previous panel values, and start it again.
This sequence separates timing problems from buff problems and preserves a known-good configuration for recovery.
