You can change the look of Home Screen icons with built-in appearance controls or themes, and on iPhone or iPad you can put a chosen photo on an individual app shortcut. The steps depend on your device: an iPhone shortcut is not a system-wide replacement, Samsung Galaxy uses Galaxy Themes, and other Android phones vary by manufacturer and launcher.
Choose the right kind of icon change
“Change an app icon” can mean changing the way icons look on your own Home Screen or replacing the icon asset distributed with an app. The instructions below cover personalizing your device. If you publish the app, see the developer note.

Change icon appearance on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Home Screen controls let you restyle icons, rather than assign a different personal image to each installed app. Apple documents default, dark, clear, and tinted appearances, along with icon-size controls. See Apple’s instructions for customizing the Home Screen and its app icon design guidance.
- On the Home Screen, touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Choose the available size or appearance option you want.
Apple’s design guidance says the system can generate appearance variants when an app developer has not supplied them. These controls adjust the Home Screen’s presentation; they do not let you assign an arbitrary photo to every installed app.

Use a personal image for an individual iPhone or iPad shortcut
To put your own image on one Home Screen tile, use Apple’s Shortcuts app. The result is a shortcut tile with the image and label you select; it does not replace the app’s distributed icon throughout iOS or iPadOS. Apple’s guide explains how to add a shortcut to the Home Screen.
- In Shortcuts, open the shortcut you want to add and tap Details.
- Tap Add to Home Screen.
- In the Home Screen Name and Icon area, tap the icon.
- Choose Take Photo, Choose Photo, or Choose File, then select the image.
- If you want, change the displayed name and tap Add.
Apple’s instructions establish the custom shortcut tile, not a change to the app’s icon in every operating-system location. Do not assume the image will also appear in search results, the App Library, notifications, Settings, or other system surfaces.

Change icons on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s Galaxy Themes service offers icon sets, and some themes may also change wallpaper, lock screen, fonts, sounds, or Samsung app visuals. A theme’s coverage varies: check its description rather than assuming it changes every third-party app icon. Samsung’s Australian support page for changing themes and icons gives an example workflow and notes that menus can differ by model, software sequence, settings, and region. If the labels on your phone do not match, consult Samsung support for your region.
- Open Galaxy Themes.
- Browse or search for a theme or icon set, and review its description for the elements it changes.
- Download and apply your selection, following the prompts shown on your device.
Check other Android phones for launcher or theme options
There is no single Android procedure for replacing arbitrary app icons with user-selected pictures. Manufacturers can provide different launchers and customization menus. Google’s Android documentation explains that launcher icons may appear on the Home screen, in All Apps, and in Settings, while its general Home Screen help covers adding apps and app-provided shortcuts—not a universal custom-image replacement feature. - Start with your device’s Wallpaper & style, Themes, or launcher settings. The names and available options vary.
- If per-app image changes are not offered, a compatible third-party launcher or shortcut app may provide another route. Check its current features, privacy terms, cost, and compatibility before installing; no particular utility is recommended here.
- Google notes that some Home Screen instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer. Menu names can also change with manufacturer software updates.
If the menu or result does not match
Check the exact phone model and Android version; on a Samsung device, note the One UI version as well. Then consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model and region. A missing customization control may reflect launcher or software support, not a problem with the image.

Changing a Home Screen shortcut or applying a theme changes how an icon is presented on your device; it does not replace the app’s published asset. For an iOS app already on the App Store, Apple says the developer must create and upload a new app version and submit it for review to change its icon.
