On Android devices that support it, turn on Themed icons to make supported home-screen app icons match the device’s color scheme. First choose a palette under Settings > Wallpaper & style, then enable the icon setting. This changes supported icons as a group; it does not provide a built-in way to pick an arbitrary color for every individual app.
Choose the device color palette
The palette controls the colors available to the system. Android’s documented route is Settings > Wallpaper & style; the precise menu names and availability can vary by device and Android version.

Open Settings and tap Wallpaper & style.

For colors based on your wallpaper, tap Wallpaper colors and choose a palette. For a color selected from the available fixed choices, tap Basic colors and choose one.

Google notes that some color-scheme steps work only on Android 13 and later. Its Android Help instructions are at Change wallpaper on your Pixel phone.

Apply the palette to supported app icons
On Pixel devices whose settings include the control, open Settings > Wallpaper & style and switch Themed icons on. Switch it off to return to the icons’ regular appearance. Google describes this feature as changing supported app icons to match the device’s color scheme; it does not recolor every app icon. If some icons stay unchanged, the app icon or the launcher may not support themed icons. The setting is not a universal individual-icon color editor, so an unchanged icon does not necessarily mean the palette was set incorrectly.

What to check if the setting is missing

Look in Settings > Wallpaper & style for Wallpaper colors, Basic colors, or Themed icons. Manufacturers may use different labels or locations.

Check your device’s Android version. Android Help identifies some palette steps as Android 13-and-later features. Pixel Tablet Help says some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later; that is guidance for Pixel Tablet, not a promise that every Android device has the same controls.

Remember that device and app appearance controls differ, and some apps do not provide multiple color schemes. Google Play Help describes app appearance settings at Use dark theme in Google Play.
Keep dark theme separate from icon colors
Dark theme changes the appearance of system interfaces and supported apps; it is not the control that applies the device palette to home-screen icons. Android 16 and newer include an expanded dark-theme option, according to Android Accessibility Help: Use dark theme and color inversion. Google also cautions that dark theme or color inversion can affect color quality or legibility.

When the built-in option is not enough
Android’s built-in themed-icons setting is the simplest route when you want supported icons to follow the device palette. If you need to recolor individual icons or change icons that remain untouched, a third-party launcher or icon pack may offer other controls, but behavior depends on the particular software. The official instructions cited here do not establish support for any specific launcher or pack, so check its current compatibility and setup details before relying on it.
