Android Auto does not provide a documented universal control for freely resizing or rearranging the entire car-screen interface. You can, however, change how the interface presents information: turn on Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto’s phone settings, use your phone’s Bold text, Outline text, and Remove animations accessibility options, and adjust navigation-specific display choices in Google Maps. The exact menu location and available options can vary by phone, Android version, vehicle and Android Auto software.

What Android Auto layout settings actually control

Android Auto’s screen is rendered on the vehicle display, but several of the controls that affect the experience are configured on the connected phone. It helps to separate three different settings areas before changing anything:

Control area Where to change it What it affects Scope
Android Auto interface and quick controls Android Auto settings on the phone Keeps navigation directions and media controls available while another app occupies the main view Android Auto’s general interface
Display accessibility Your phone’s Settings app Text weight, text contrast treatment and interface motion Android Auto display experience, subject to device support
Google Maps navigation display Google Maps on the car screen while navigating, or in Google Maps on the phone while parked Route and map presentation options Google Maps only
Physical screen size or arbitrary panel arrangement No universal user-facing control is documented Would resize or freely reposition the complete Android Auto interface Not established as a standard Android Auto feature

Google’s Screens and apps on Android Auto overview describes the launcher, microphone button, recent-apps area, status area and dashboard control. It explains what you are seeing on the display; it does not describe a setting that lets you drag those regions, choose arbitrary panel sizes or redesign the entire screen.

Keep navigation and media controls visible with quick controls

If a full-screen app hides the controls you use most, the documented layout-related option is Show quick controls for apps. When enabled, Android Auto can keep navigation directions and media controls available while you are using another full-screen app.

Turn on Show quick controls for apps

  1. Park safely before changing settings or handling the phone.
  2. On the phone that connects to your car, open Settings.
  3. Open the Android Auto settings page. Android phones place this entry in different parts of Settings, so use the Settings search field for Android Auto if you do not see it immediately.
  4. Find Show quick controls for apps and switch it on. The wording is the control label used in Google’s Android Auto help.
  5. Reconnect to Android Auto or return to the car display and open an app that normally uses the full screen. Check for the persistent navigation or media controls.

This setting changes the availability of quick controls, not the physical dimensions of the vehicle’s display. It also does not turn every app into a split-screen layout; it preserves access to selected controls while another app is in the foreground.

If the switch is missing

  • Use Settings search for both Android Auto and quick controls; manufacturers do not all use the same Settings hierarchy.
  • Confirm that you are changing settings on the phone that is actually paired with the vehicle.
  • Check whether the phone, vehicle and installed Android Auto software support the same feature set. Google notes that availability can differ by device and vehicle.
  • Reconnect after changing the option. A setting changed while Android Auto is already running may not be reflected until the next connection.

Make Android Auto text easier to read

Google’s Accessibility with Android Auto guidance identifies three phone-side display options that can affect readability and motion in Android Auto: Bold text, Outline text and Remove animations. The labels and exact Settings path vary by phone, so treat the following as a reliable way to locate the controls rather than a single manufacturer-specific route.

Use Bold text

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app while parked.
  2. Use Settings search for Bold text. On some phones it is under an Accessibility or Display section.
  3. Turn on Bold text, then reconnect to Android Auto or return to its display.

Google describes Bold text as making Android Auto text easier to read. It changes text weight; it does not enlarge the car’s display or create a new panel layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Outline text for additional contrast

  1. Open Settings and search for Outline text.
  2. Enable the option if your phone exposes it.
  3. Check Android Auto on the vehicle display. The setting adds a contrasting background treatment around text, which can help labels stand out from a busy map or changing background.

Not every phone exposes every accessibility control. If Outline text is absent, that is a device or software availability difference rather than evidence that the Android Auto connection is faulty.

Reduce movement with Remove animations

  1. In the phone’s Settings, search for Remove animations.
  2. Turn it on, then reconnect or reopen Android Auto.
  3. Use the car display normally and check whether interface transitions and other sudden movement are reduced.

Remove animations is intended to reduce sudden movement and interface animations. It is useful if motion is distracting or if you prefer a more static presentation, but it does not change which apps or controls are available.

Android Auto dark mode: what is and is not documented

Google’s accessibility help describes dark theming as an Android Auto capability, but the reviewed guidance does not provide one universal, click-by-click path for selecting a theme on every phone and vehicle. Android Auto’s theme can be influenced by the phone, vehicle display and software state, and the available controls may not be identical across combinations.

AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed

Do not assume that a dark-mode switch will appear in the same Android Auto menu on every device, and do not promise that a user can permanently force a particular theme regardless of the vehicle or app state. If your phone or car exposes a theme control, use the label shown on that device; if it does not, the absence of a universal path is expected from the currently documented guidance.

Change Google Maps display and route options separately

Google Maps has its own navigation settings. They are not global Android Auto layout controls, so changing a Maps option will not rearrange the launcher, status area or controls in other Android Auto apps.

While navigating on the car display

  1. Connect to Android Auto and open Google Maps on the vehicle display.
  2. Start or resume navigation.
  3. Open Google Maps’ settings from the navigation interface and adjust the route or display option you need.
  4. Return to the map and verify the result before driving.

The labels and available choices can change with the Maps and Android Auto versions installed on your phone and car. Google’s Get turn-by-turn navigation help distinguishes these in-navigation controls from Android Auto’s general interface settings.

While parked, using the phone

  1. Park before handling the phone.
  2. Open Google Maps on the phone connected to Android Auto.
  3. Open Maps settings and adjust the navigation or display preference.
  4. Reconnect to Android Auto or reopen Maps on the car screen to confirm that the preference is reflected.

Use the car-display method when a setting is only exposed during navigation; use the phone method when you are parked and the option is easier to reach there. A Maps preference remains specific to Maps.

Understand the regions you see on the Android Auto screen

The screen overview in Google’s Android Auto help identifies several standard interface regions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • App launcher: opens the Android Auto-compatible apps available to you.
  • Microphone control: starts voice input when supported by the phone and vehicle.
  • Recent apps area: shows recently used navigation, media and communication apps, plus one additional app.
  • Status area: presents connection or system information.
  • Dashboard control: returns to the dashboard view provided by Android Auto.

These regions explain why the screen can look different after you switch apps or reconnect. The recent-apps area is based on recent use; it is not a user-defined collection of arbitrary tiles. Likewise, the dashboard and launcher are part of Android Auto’s supplied interface rather than movable widgets.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

What you cannot change with a standard Android Auto setting

There is no documented universal Android Auto option to freely resize the complete interface or drag navigation, media, status and launcher regions into a custom arrangement. The settings above change quick-control visibility, text presentation, motion or Google Maps’ own navigation display; they do not turn the vehicle screen into a general-purpose layout editor.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a problem. If your goal is to make a map panel physically wider, move the status area, or choose a permanent split between two unrelated apps, searching the phone’s Android Auto settings will not reveal a standard control for that task. The result is governed by Android Auto, the vehicle’s head unit and the software versions they support.

Troubleshoot a layout or display change that is not appearing

The quick-controls option does not appear

  • Search the phone’s Settings for the exact phrase Show quick controls for apps.
  • Open Android Auto settings on the paired phone, not on a second device that is nearby but not connected.
  • Check the phone and vehicle compatibility information in Google’s Set up Android Auto guidance.
  • Disconnect and reconnect after enabling the switch so Android Auto can reload its interface.

Quick controls are enabled but not visible

  • Test with a full-screen app; the feature is intended to keep navigation or media controls available while another app is in the foreground.
  • Return to the Android Auto dashboard and open the app again. This distinguishes a temporary display state from a missing setting.
  • If the behavior is unchanged across reconnects, the phone, vehicle or software combination may not expose the same feature despite the setting label being present.

Text still looks too small or low-contrast

  • Verify that Bold text is enabled in the phone’s Settings and reconnect.
  • If available, test Outline text separately so you can tell whether contrast, rather than text weight, is the limiting factor.
  • Remember that these options affect text treatment; they do not enlarge the physical display.

Animations remain distracting

  • Search Settings for Remove animations and enable it.
  • Reconnect Android Auto after changing the option.
  • If the control is not offered, your phone’s software may not provide that accessibility feature.

A Google Maps display choice is missing

  • Open Maps settings from the car display while navigation is active.
  • If you are parked, open Google Maps on the phone and check its navigation settings there.
  • Do not look for a Maps-only route option in Android Auto’s general settings; the two areas are separate.

Connection requirements are separate from layout settings

Android Auto must first establish a compatible phone-to-car connection before any display preference can appear on the vehicle screen. Google’s setup guidance covers compatibility and connection prerequisites. A USB cable is one connection method for supported wired setups; it is not a tool for resizing the interface or changing its layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Android Auto will not start at all, resolve the connection problem first by checking the phone and vehicle requirements in Google’s Set up Android Auto instructions. Once the connection works, return to the phone-side Android Auto, accessibility and Maps settings described above. Buying a different cable, wireless adapter or phone mount does not create layout controls that Android Auto does not document.

Practical settings plans

For a navigation-first view

  1. Enable Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings on the phone.
  2. Use Google Maps’ navigation settings for route and map presentation choices.
  3. Leave the app launcher and dashboard in their standard positions; they are supplied interface regions, not movable panels.

For maximum readability

  1. Enable Bold text.
  2. Test Outline text if your phone provides it.
  3. Reconnect and check labels against the map background in both day and night conditions.

For less visual motion

  1. Enable Remove animations in phone Settings.
  2. Reconnect Android Auto.
  3. Use Google Maps’ own display controls separately if the map presentation, rather than the Android Auto interface, is the source of the distraction.

When you want a different overall screen arrangement

Use the documented quick-controls and accessibility options, but do not expect a general drag-and-resize editor. If the vehicle’s display offers its own screen or theme controls, those are vehicle-specific and separate from Android Auto’s standard settings.

Bottom line for changing Android Auto’s layout

Start with Android Auto’s phone settings and enable Show quick controls for apps if you want navigation or media controls to remain accessible over a full-screen app. Use the phone’s accessibility settings for Bold text, Outline text and Remove animations. Adjust route and map presentation inside Google Maps, either on the car display during navigation or on the phone while parked. These controls improve visibility and access, but Google does not document a universal way to freely resize or rearrange the entire Android Auto screen.
