On a Chromebook, change Android app permissions through the Android settings linked from ChromeOS: select the time > Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager. Change Android app alerts separately under Settings > Apps > Notifications. Website alerts use Chrome’s site settings, not the Android permission manager.
The correct path depends on where the alert or capability comes from. The sections below distinguish Android apps, Chrome websites, and device-wide privacy controls so you can change the setting without disabling unrelated access.
Which Chromebook setting do you need?
First identify the source. An app installed from Google Play is managed through Android settings and ChromeOS’s app controls. A notification generated by a page open in Chrome is controlled by Chrome site permissions. Camera, microphone, and location can also be blocked at the Chromebook level, even when an individual app is allowed.
| What you are changing | Use this path | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Android app permission | Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager | Whether Android apps can use a capability such as camera, microphone, files, contacts, or location, where that category is available on your device. |
| Android app notifications | Settings > Apps > Notifications | Alerts produced by an installed Android app. |
| Website notifications | Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications | Alerts requested by websites in Chrome. |
| All app notifications temporarily | Notification area or time panel > Focus > Do Not Disturb | Silences app notifications globally for a quiet period. |
| Device-wide camera, microphone, or location access | ChromeOS Privacy controls | Can block access for every app, regardless of an app-level permission. |
Menu names can vary by ChromeOS version, language, model, and administrator policy. If a label is not where the steps show it, open Settings and use the settings search box with terms such as permissions, notifications, camera, or microphone.

Change permissions for an Android app
Google’s Chromebook instructions place Android app permissions inside Android settings rather than in the ordinary ChromeOS app list. Use this procedure when an Android app cannot access a camera, microphone, location, files, contacts, or another permission category.
Open Android’s Permission manager
- Select the time in the lower-right corner of the Chromebook screen.
- Select Settings.
- In the left navigation, select Apps.
- Select Manage Google Play preferences. This opens the Android settings area associated with the Chromebook’s Play Store environment.
- Select Android settings.
- In the Android settings window, select Apps & notifications.
- Select Permission manager.
- Choose the permission category you want to inspect.
- Review the apps listed as Allowed and Not allowed. Select the relevant app and move it to the appropriate status.
The exact categories and permission names are not identical on every Chromebook. Some Android privacy and security settings may not appear or may not apply in ChromeOS. Use the categories actually shown on your device rather than assuming that every Android phone permission exists on a Chromebook.
Allow a permission when an app needs it
If an app reports that it cannot use a feature, open the matching category in Permission manager and check whether the app is under Not allowed. Select the app and choose the available allow option. Return to the app and retry the feature. If the app still cannot connect, check the device-wide privacy switch described below; an allowed app can still be blocked globally.
Revoke a permission
To stop an app from using a capability, open the same category, select the app under Allowed, and change it to the available deny or not-allowed state. The app may lose a feature immediately or may ask again the next time it needs access. Revoking a permission does not uninstall the app.
Understand what the category controls
Permission manager is organized by capability, not by the problem you see in the app. If a scanning feature fails, look for the camera category; if voice input fails, look for microphone; if an app cannot determine where you are, look for location. File and contact access, when exposed on the Chromebook, are likewise changed from their own categories. Selecting an app from one category changes only that capability. It does not automatically grant the app every other permission.
Categories can be absent, renamed, or presented differently because Android support differs between Chromebook models and ChromeOS versions. A missing category is therefore not proof that a setting is hidden behind another menu. Work with the categories your device actually displays.
Check the device-level privacy controls
Chromebook privacy controls are connected to the corresponding Android app permissions. A device-wide switch can therefore override an individual app’s status:

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Camera: turning off device camera access blocks camera use at every level, including apps that are individually allowed.
- Microphone: turning off device microphone access blocks all microphone access. If your Chromebook has a physical microphone switch, it must also be on.
- Location: the device-level location control can prevent an app from obtaining location even when the app’s individual permission is allowed.
When troubleshooting, check the individual permission first and then confirm that the corresponding Chromebook privacy control is enabled. A permission grant is necessary but not always sufficient for access. Privacy controls and the Android Preference Centre are linked, so changing the Chromebook-wide camera or microphone setting can affect Android apps as well as other Chromebook features.

Change notifications for an Android app
Android app notifications use ChromeOS’s app notification page, not the Android Permission manager. This controls whether a Play Store app can post alerts in the Chromebook notification area.
- Select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps > Notifications.
- Find the relevant app and turn its notifications on or off.
Turning an app’s notifications off affects that app’s alerts; it does not change the app’s camera, microphone, location, or other permissions. Conversely, changing a permission does not automatically silence the app’s notifications.
Silence every app temporarily with Do Not Disturb
Use Do Not Disturb when you need a quiet period rather than a permanent per-app change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the time to open the notification and quick-settings area.
- Select Focus.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb while in Focus.
You can also use the notification area controls to silence notifications. Do Not Disturb is a global quieting measure, so it is not the right choice if only one noisy app should be muted permanently.
Choose the narrowest notification control
Use the per-app switch when one installed app is distracting you but other alerts remain useful. Use Do Not Disturb when the goal is to silence all app notifications for a temporary period. These controls operate at different scopes: the first changes one Android app’s normal behavior, while the second suppresses notifications globally. If an alert returns after Do Not Disturb is turned off, use the per-app control to make the change persistent.
If you are unsure which app produced an alert, first note the name or icon displayed in the notification area. Then compare that name with the entries under Settings > Apps > Notifications. A similarly named website will not necessarily appear there because Chrome site alerts have a separate list.
Website notifications are separate from Android apps
A web page open in Chrome can produce an alert that looks similar to an Android app notification. Its permission is controlled by Chrome’s site settings, so changing an Android app toggle will not stop it.
Change the default website notification behavior
- Open Chrome.
- Open Chrome’s menu and select Settings.
- Select Privacy and security.
- Select Site Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Set the default behavior, or change a particular site’s entry in the allowed or blocked lists.
Use this path when the alert names a website, arrives while Chrome is running, or continues after you have changed an Android app’s notification setting.

Restore notifications for one website
Open the website in Chrome, select View site information beside the address, and turn on its Notifications permission. Chrome may remove notification permission from sites that have not been visited for a while. If a previously allowed site no longer appears to work, review removed permissions through Chrome’s Safety Check and grant the site again if you still trust it.
Block a website that keeps alerting
Open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications, locate the site, and change it to blocked. This does not affect an Android app with a similar name, because the browser site and installed app have separate permission systems.
Tell a website alert from an Android alert
Look at the source shown with the notification. A site name, domain, or Chrome context points to browser permissions; an installed app name points to the Android app notification list. If the alert appears only while a particular page is open in Chrome, check Site Settings before changing any Android setting. This simple source check prevents changing a permission that has nothing to do with the alert.

Why Google Play or Android settings may be missing
The Chromebook may not support Android apps
Google Play is available only on some Chromebook models. If Manage Google Play preferences is absent, the hardware or ChromeOS configuration may not support Android apps. Google describes this condition as a Chromebook that does not work with Android apps.
A work or school administrator may have restricted Play Store access
On an organization-managed Chromebook, an administrator can prevent users from adding the Play Store or downloading Android apps. In that case, the missing menu is a policy limitation rather than a permission you can enable yourself. Contact the organization’s administrator instead of attempting to bypass the policy.
Labels may have moved after an update
Open ChromeOS Settings and search for Google Play, Android settings, notifications, or permission. The settings search can locate a renamed or relocated control. Also verify that you are looking in ChromeOS Settings, not only in Chrome browser settings.
Do not disable Google Play as a routine fix
Turning off the Google Play Store is not a harmless reset. Google says that disabling it erases Android app data and settings from the Chromebook. Use that action only when you deliberately accept the data loss and have confirmed that it is appropriate for your situation; it should not be the first response to a missing permission or notification toggle.

What the missing menu does and does not mean
An absent Play Store entry does not automatically indicate a broken installation. It can reflect unsupported hardware, an administrator policy, or a menu location that changed with ChromeOS. Check all three possibilities before changing system settings. If the device is managed by a school or employer, the administrator may be the only person who can alter Play Store availability.
Troubleshoot a permission or alert that still does not work
The app is allowed but cannot use the camera or microphone
- Recheck the app under the relevant category in Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager.
- Open Chromebook privacy controls and make sure device-wide camera or microphone access is on.
- If the Chromebook has a physical microphone switch, set it to the on position.
- Close and reopen the app, then retry its feature.
Location remains unavailable
- Confirm the app’s location status in Permission manager.
- Confirm that the Chromebook’s device-level location control is enabled.
- Check whether the app actually supports location on your Chromebook; Android permission categories can vary by device.
An app alert continues after you turned off its notifications
- Determine whether the alert identifies a website or appears only in Chrome.
- If it is a website, use Chrome’s Site Settings > Notifications controls.
- If it is an Android app, return to Settings > Apps > Notifications and verify that the correct app entry was changed.
- Use Do Not Disturb for an immediate quiet period while you identify the source.
You cannot find the app in notification settings
The app may not have generated a notification yet, may be a website rather than an installed Android app, or may be restricted by an administrator. Search ChromeOS Settings for notifications, then check Chrome’s site notification list if the alert is browser-based.
A permission category is not listed
Not every Android privacy and security setting is exposed on every Chromebook. The available categories depend on the ChromeOS model, Android support, app behavior, and software version. Do not infer that a missing category means the app is broken; first confirm that the app requires that capability on this device and that the Chromebook supports it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The setting appears correct but access is still blocked
Separate the two permission layers. First verify the app’s Allowed or Not allowed status. Next verify the matching device-wide control: camera, microphone, or location. For microphone problems, check both the software control and any physical microphone switch. This order helps identify whether the block is specific to one app or applies to the entire Chromebook.
The notification source is still unclear
Use Do Not Disturb to stop the immediate interruption, then watch the next alert for its displayed source. An Android app should be listed in ChromeOS app notifications; a website should be listed in Chrome’s Site Settings. Do not change both systems at once, because that makes it harder to know which control solved the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Permissions, notifications, and privacy: what each change affects
| Change | Scope | Does it change the other controls? |
|---|---|---|
| Allow or deny an Android permission | One capability for one Android app | No. It does not turn that app’s notifications on or off. |
| Turn an Android app’s notifications off | Alerts from that installed app | No. The app can retain camera, microphone, location, or other permissions. |
| Change a Chrome site notification | Alerts requested by one website or Chrome’s default site behavior | No. It does not alter an installed Android app with a similar name. |
| Turn on Do Not Disturb | All app notifications during the quiet period | No permanent app permission is changed. |
| Turn off device camera, microphone, or location | Every feature or app that depends on that device capability | Yes, it can override an individual app’s Allowed status. |
This separation is the key to avoiding overbroad fixes. If only one app needs to be quiet, change that app’s notification setting. If only one app needs camera access, change its camera permission. Use a device-wide privacy switch only when you intend to block the capability everywhere.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the source: installed Android app, Chrome website, or a device-wide privacy control.
- For an Android permission: use Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager.
- For an Android app alert: use Settings > Apps > Notifications.
- For a website alert: use Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications.
- For immediate quiet: enable Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- If access still fails: inspect Chromebook-wide camera, microphone, or location controls.
- If Google Play controls are missing: check model support, administrator policy, and Settings search; do not disable Play Store casually.
These controls are intentionally separate: app permissions govern access to device capabilities, app notification settings govern Android alerts, Chrome site settings govern website alerts, and Do Not Disturb suppresses notifications globally for a temporary period.

How do I change an Android app permission on a Chromebook?
Go to Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager. Choose the capability, select the app, and move it between Allowed and Not allowed as needed.
How do I turn off notifications for one Android app?
Select the time, open Settings, choose Apps > Notifications, find the app, and turn its notifications off. This does not revoke camera, microphone, location, or other app permissions.
How do I silence all Chromebook app notifications temporarily?
Select the time, open Focus, and turn on Do Not Disturb. You can also use controls in the notification area. This is a global quiet mode rather than a permanent change to one app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy did changing an Android notification setting not stop an alert?
The alert may come from a website in Chrome rather than an installed Android app. Check Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications and change the site’s permission there.
Why is Manage Google Play preferences missing?
The Chromebook may not support Android apps, or a work or school administrator may have restricted the Play Store. Use Settings search for Google Play or Android settings, and contact the administrator on a managed device.
Will turning off Google Play fix missing permission settings?
It should not be used as a routine fix. Google says turning off the Google Play Store erases Android app data and settings from the Chromebook.
Why can an app still not use my camera or microphone when it is allowed?
Check the Chromebook-wide camera or microphone privacy control. Device-wide access can block every app, and a physical microphone switch, if present, must also be on.
Why does location remain unavailable after I allow the app?
Confirm both the app’s location status in Permission manager and the Chromebook’s device-level location control. The individual grant may not be enough when system location is off.
How do I restore notifications for a website?
Open the site in Chrome, select View site information beside the address, and turn on Notifications. Chrome may remove permission from sites that have not been visited for a while; Safety Check can help review removed grants.
The Bottom Line
Use ChromeOS Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager for Android app permissions, and Settings > Apps > Notifications for Android app alerts. Use Chrome’s Site Settings > Notifications for website alerts, and Focus > Do Not Disturb when you need a temporary global quiet period. If an allowed app still cannot use the camera, microphone, or location, check the Chromebook-wide privacy control as well.
