On a compatible Amazon Fire tablet, turn off Alexa’s hands-free wake-word listening at Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode. That stops Alexa responding to its wake word; it does not delete Alexa history, disable every way to open Alexa, or change Fire OS data settings. The exact controls can vary by tablet and software version, and a non-Fire tablet may not have these menus.

If you are asking, “How do I turn off Alexa’s microphone on my tablet?”, the key distinction is that these Fire tablet controls turn off Alexa hands-free listening; Amazon does not describe them as a physical microphone power disconnect. You can manage wake-word access, account-level Alexa activity, and other Fire OS privacy options separately.

Turn off Alexa hands-free listening

On a compatible Fire tablet, Alexa’s hands-free setting determines whether you can activate Alexa by saying its wake word. Amazon documents a main switch in the tablet’s Settings and additional shortcuts in Quick Actions. These are ways to change the hands-free setting; they are not three separate privacy systems. The Quick Actions label and the on-screen indicator depend on whether the tablet is in Show Mode.

  1. Open Settings: On the tablet, go to Settings > Alexa. If you do not see an Alexa section, the control may not be available on that tablet or software configuration. The instructions apply to compatible Fire tablets, not every tablet.
  2. Switch off Hands-Free Mode: Find the Hands-Free Mode on/off switch and turn it off. Amazon says this deactivates Alexa hands-free on a compatible tablet. This is the most direct route when you want to stop wake-word activation.
  3. Check the indicator, if available: Amazon says that in Show Mode, a red bar and icon indicate that hands-free is off. Outside Show Mode, an icon appears in the status bar. These are Amazon-described indicators, but their appearance may differ by model or software version.

You can also use Quick Actions. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open them, then choose the control that matches the tablet’s mode:

Amazon also documents a hardware-button shortcut for supported Fire tablet behavior: press and hold the tablet’s Volume Up and Volume Down buttons together for three seconds to turn hands-free off. This shortcut changes the hands-free setting. It is not a physical microphone power-disconnect switch, and it should not be mistaken for one.

What changes when you switch it off

With hands-free mode off, Alexa stops responding to its wake word. Outside Show Mode, you can still invoke Alexa by pressing and holding Home, according to Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ. In other words, the switch controls wake-word access, not every route for using Alexa. If your goal is to prevent hands-free wake-word activation, the setting addresses that; if your goal is to prevent every possible Alexa interaction, remember that the Home-button route remains available outside Show Mode.

Turning Hands-Free Mode back on restores wake-word operation if the tablet and its configuration support that feature. The setting does not, by itself, erase past requests, change Alexa’s account-level retention settings, or switch off Fire OS app-usage, advertising, and location controls. Those controls have their own locations and effects.

What “microphone off” means on a Fire tablet

The Fire tablet instructions describe disabling Alexa hands-free listening; they do not document a dedicated physical microphone power switch for the tablet. Do not treat the hands-free setting or the Volume Up and Volume Down shortcut as a hardware disconnect. Amazon’s explanation that a microphone-off button disconnects power applies to Echo devices, not to the tablet instructions, so that guarantee should not be transferred to a Fire tablet.

Amazon describes wake-word detection as happening on the device. After the wake word is detected, the tablet streams audio to the cloud, including a fraction of a second from before the wake word. Amazon’s Fire tablet help page says a blue light bar appears while Alexa is recording and sending a request. That description is local wake-word detection followed by streaming after detection; it is not a claim that all ambient audio is continuously streamed to the cloud.

This distinction helps when choosing the control. Hands-Free Mode changes whether the tablet responds to the wake word. The recording indicator describes Alexa recording and sending a request. Alexa Privacy controls, discussed below, let you review or manage account-level interaction history. These controls answer different questions, so one should not be treated as a substitute for the others.

Review or delete Alexa interaction history

Changing hands-free mode does not manage recordings or other Alexa interaction history. To review or delete Alexa recordings, transcripts, and typed requests, use More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app, or visit amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. These are account-level controls, separate from the tablet’s Alexa activation switch.

Use the Alexa Privacy area when your question is what activity is associated with Alexa interactions or how long certain information is retained. Use the Fire tablet Hands-Free Mode setting when your question is whether the tablet should respond to the wake word. Turning off the tablet switch does not perform the account-level history task, and deleting history does not perform the tablet wake-word task.

Choose a retention option

Amazon documents automatic deletion after 3 or 18 months, as well as an option not to save voice recordings. Those are account-level retention choices; they are not the same thing as disabling Hands-Free Mode on a particular tablet. Under the no-save option, Amazon says voice recordings are deleted after processing. Transcripts and typed requests are retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat, then automatically deleted.

Amazon cautions that deleting interaction data can reduce personalization or improvements based on interactions, and some features may stop working. It also says that deleting recordings, transcripts, and typed requests associated with a chat deletes those items from its cloud. Other interaction-related records may remain to support functions such as reminders, shopping lists, and actions Alexa took. Deleting Alexa history should therefore not be understood as removing every record connected to an interaction.

These distinctions matter if you are trying to make several changes at once. For example, turning off Hands-Free Mode stops wake-word response but does not select a history-retention period. Selecting an automatic deletion period or the no-save-recordings option manages retention, but it is not the tablet’s wake-word switch. If you also want to change app-usage, advertising, or location settings, those are separate Fire OS controls.

Change other Fire tablet privacy settings separately

Fire OS offers controls that address app usage, advertising, and location rather than Alexa wake-word listening or Alexa interaction history. Amazon lists these paths:

  • App usage data: Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data.
  • Interest-based ads: Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads.
  • Location: Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services.

These settings should not be confused with Alexa Privacy. App-usage data, advertising ID, and location are separate Fire tablet privacy categories; the Alexa hands-free switch controls wake-word access, while Alexa Privacy covers account-level interaction history and retention choices.

Amazon describes the listed Fire OS settings as device-specific. If a tablet has multiple profiles, choose the settings for each profile rather than assuming one profile’s selection changes every profile. Some devices also expose privacy settings through the Amazon account under Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. The exact menu availability can depend on the tablet, so a missing path is not evidence that the Alexa hands-free switch or Alexa history controls have changed.

Which control should you use?

What you want to change Control What it affects
Stop wake-word activation Tablet: Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode; Quick Actions may also offer a shortcut Alexa hands-free listening. Press-and-hold Home can still invoke Alexa outside Show Mode.
Review or delete Alexa interaction data Alexa app: More > Alexa Privacy, or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings Account-level recordings, transcripts, typed requests, and retention options.
Change app-usage, ad, or location settings Relevant Fire tablet settings under Apps & Games or Wireless Device-specific Fire OS privacy controls, not Alexa wake-word access or Alexa history.

A quick way to decide is to name the outcome you want. If you do not want the tablet to react to a spoken wake word, turn off Hands-Free Mode. If you want to examine or delete prior Alexa requests, go to Alexa Privacy. If you want to address app usage, advertising, or location, use the corresponding Fire OS settings. More than one goal may require more than one change.

If you cannot find the setting

  • There is no Alexa menu: The instructions apply to compatible Fire tablets, not every tablet. Amazon’s help material does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every generation, Fire OS version, region, or profile. Check the current help information for your tablet model rather than assuming the setting exists on all devices. A non-Fire tablet may not offer these Fire tablet menus.
  • The Quick Actions shortcut label differs: Labels depend on Show Mode. Look for Alexa Microphone/Camera in Show Mode or Alexa Hands Free outside Show Mode. The two labels are mode-specific shortcuts for the hands-free control, not account-history controls.
  • You see an indicator but are unsure what it means: Amazon describes a red bar and icon as indicating hands-free is off in Show Mode, and an icon in the status bar outside Show Mode. A blue light bar is described while Alexa is recording and sending a request. Indicators may vary, so do not assume every tablet software version displays them identically.
  • You can still open Alexa after switching hands-free off: Outside Show Mode, pressing and holding Home remains a documented invocation method. The hands-free switch disables wake-word response, not this separate route.
  • You want to remove history as well: Use Alexa Privacy separately; the tablet hands-free setting does not delete account-level interaction data. Review the retention options and Amazon’s cautions about feature effects and records that may remain for functions such as reminders or shopping lists.
  • You changed one profile but not another: Amazon says Fire tablet app-usage, advertising, and location settings are device-specific and should be selected for each profile where a tablet has multiple profiles. Do not assume those settings automatically apply to every profile.

Practical checks before you finish

  1. Confirm the device scope: These directions are for compatible Amazon Fire tablets. Menu names and feature availability can vary; a non-Fire tablet may not show them.
  2. Confirm the control matches your goal: Hands-Free Mode controls wake-word response. Alexa Privacy manages interaction history and retention. Fire OS settings separately address app usage, ads, and location.
  3. Use the mode-appropriate shortcut if needed: Quick Actions call the control Alexa Hands Free outside Show Mode and use Alexa Microphone/Camera in Show Mode.
  4. Remember the remaining access route: Outside Show Mode, Alexa may still be invoked by pressing and holding Home after hands-free is off.
  5. Review profile-specific settings: If you are changing app-usage, advertising, or location controls on a multi-profile tablet, make the selections for each profile.

Can I turn off Alexa hands-free without opening Settings?

Amazon documents Quick Actions: swipe down and choose Alexa Hands Free outside Show Mode, or the Alexa Microphone/Camera on/off icon in Show Mode. On supported Fire tablet behavior, holding Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds is another documented way to turn hands-free off.

Does turning off Hands-Free Mode delete my Alexa recordings?

No. The tablet switch controls wake-word access. To review or delete recordings, transcripts, and typed requests, use More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings.

Can Alexa still open after I turn hands-free off?

Outside Show Mode, Amazon says you can still invoke Alexa by pressing and holding Home. Hands-Free Mode turns off wake-word response, not every way to access Alexa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Alexa stream everything the tablet microphone hears?

Amazon describes wake-word detection on the device, followed by audio streaming to the cloud after the wake word is detected. It says the stream includes a fraction of a second before the wake word. This is not a description of continuous cloud streaming of all ambient audio.

What happens if I choose not to save voice recordings?

Amazon says recordings are deleted after processing, while transcripts and typed requests are retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat and then automatically deleted. Amazon also cautions that deletion can affect personalization and some features.

Why can’t I find the Alexa setting on my tablet?

The instructions apply to compatible Fire tablets, and Amazon does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every generation, Fire OS version, region, or profile. Check the current help information for your model; these menus may not appear on a non-Fire tablet.

Are Fire tablet app-usage and location settings part of Alexa Privacy?

No. Amazon lists app-usage data, interest-based ads, and location as separate Fire OS controls. They are distinct from the tablet’s Alexa hands-free switch and account-level Alexa Privacy settings.

The Bottom Line

On a compatible Fire tablet, use Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode to stop wake-word activation. Treat that as a hands-free control, not a physical microphone disconnect or an account-history deletion. Manage Alexa recordings and retention through More > Alexa Privacy or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings, and change Fire OS app-usage, advertising, and location settings separately.
