Connect and wear your AirPods, then open the AirPods-specific settings page—not the general Bluetooth page. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the AirPods name near the top of Settings. On a Mac, open System Settings and select AirPods in the sidebar. Noise-control, Siri, microphone, and call options are on that page, although some versions place them under Controls & Gestures or Audio & Routing.

The exact controls depend on the AirPods generation and operating-system version. The steps below reflect Apple’s AirPods guides available on October 9, 2026, whose linked pages identify the iOS 27 and macOS 27-era layouts. If a label or option is absent, check the model-compatibility notes before assuming your AirPods are malfunctioning.

Open the correct AirPods settings page

Settings only expose AirPods controls while the earbuds or headphones are connected. Put the AirPods on, keep them near the device, and confirm that audio is routed to them. Then use the platform-specific path:

Check which AirPods features your model supports

Noise cancellation and some gesture controls are hardware-dependent. Apple currently identifies the following models for the main listening features in its listening-mode guide:

Model or family Noise cancellation Adaptive Audio Noise cancellation in one ear Notes relevant to this guide
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation Supported Supported Supported Press-and-hold listening-mode controls are available when offered by the connected device.
AirPods 5 Supported Supported Supported Feature labels can vary with software.
AirPods Pro Supported Supported on the generations Apple lists Supported Check the exact Pro generation for Adaptive Audio and Siri details.
AirPods Pro 2 Supported Supported Supported Also listed for the newer Siri phrase options and Voice Isolation.
AirPods Pro 3 Supported Supported Supported Also listed for the newer Siri phrase options and Voice Isolation.
AirPods Max Supported Supported on AirPods Max 2 Not stated by Apple’s cited guide Use the Digital Crown for supported physical controls.

Apple’s list is not a promise that every setting appears on every generation. If your model is not listed for a feature, no software switch can add the required hardware behavior.

Turn noise cancellation on or change listening modes

Use the AirPods control

  1. Connect and wear the AirPods.
  2. Open Settings on iPhone or iPad and tap the AirPods name near the top. On Mac, open System Settings and select AirPods.
  3. Find Press and Hold AirPods. If it is not visible, open Controls & Gestures first.
  4. Select Left or Right.
  5. Choose Listening Mode, then select the two or three modes you want the stem to cycle through.
  6. Press and hold the selected stem to move through those modes. Stop when the device announces or displays Noise Cancellation.

On the documented Pro and ANC models, the default press-and-hold cycle switches between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency. You can include a third available mode when the settings page offers one. The choices apply to the side you edited, so configure the other side separately if you want a different action.

Change modes from Control Center

For a quick change without opening the full settings page, open Control Center while the AirPods are connected and use the AirPods listening-mode control. Select Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or another mode offered for your model. This changes the current listening state; it does not necessarily change which modes a press-and-hold gesture cycles through. Edit that cycle in Press and Hold AirPods.

Adjust Adaptive Audio

On AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2, Apple documents Adaptive Audio. When it is selected, use the Adaptive slider to move the balance toward Transparency or Noise Cancellation. The slider is separate from choosing which modes are available to the physical control, so a customized press-and-hold cycle may still be useful for quickly reaching a fixed mode.

Allow cancellation in one ear

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro support one-ear noise cancellation. On the connected iPhone or iPad, open the AirPods settings, go to the relevant Accessibility controls, and enable the one-ear cancellation option. If the option is missing, verify the model name and software version; it is not listed for every AirPods model.

Conversation Awareness and what happens when you speak

Conversation Awareness is a listening-mode behavior on supported models, not a replacement for the Noise Cancellation switch. Apple Support describes it this way: “When Conversation Awareness is turned on, media volume lowers when you start speaking; if you’re listening to spoken media, like a podcast, the media pauses after a few seconds.” Use the listening-mode settings page to turn the feature on or off when it is offered for your model. The behavior affects media playback and volume while you talk; it does not change your call mute assignment.

Assign Siri to a press-and-hold action

Enable Siri on the connected device first

The AirPods assignment only invokes Siri; Siri must also be enabled on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch that is connected. Complete the device’s Siri setup, then return to the AirPods page. Enabling Siri on one device does not automatically create an AirPods gesture on every other device.

Set Siri on iPhone or iPad

  1. Connect and wear the AirPods.
  2. Open Settings and tap the AirPods name near the top.
  3. Open Press and Hold AirPods. If that heading is grouped elsewhere, open Controls & Gestures.
  4. Choose Left or Right.
  5. Select Siri instead of Listening Mode.
  6. Press and hold that AirPod to test the assignment, then speak your request after Siri appears or responds.

Set Siri on Mac

  1. Connect the AirPods to the Mac.
  2. Open System Settings and select AirPods in the sidebar.
  3. Open the left- or right-AirPod control, using Controls & Gestures if the option is nested there.
  4. Assign Siri to the side you want, then press and hold it to test.

Use the supported voice phrase

Apple’s current Siri guide says AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 can use either “Siri” or “Hey Siri.” Other models require “Hey Siri.” Region settings can affect which phrase is available. If saying “Siri” does nothing, use “Hey Siri” and check the Siri language and region on the connected device.

Physical controls differ by generation: older AirPods may use a double tap, stem models use press and hold, and AirPods Max use the Digital Crown. The available assignment in your AirPods page is the authoritative indication for that model.

Announce calls and notifications

To have Siri read incoming information, open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications on iPhone or iPad and choose the announcement options. Apple Watch has a corresponding Notifications setting. Announcing is separate from assigning Siri to a press-and-hold gesture: you can enable announcements without changing the physical control, or change the control without enabling announcements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported models with Announce Calls and Announce Notifications enabled, head gestures can accept or decline calls. If head gestures are not offered, use the ordinary stem or on-screen call controls instead.

Change mute and end-call gestures

Understand the default assignments

For AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro, Apple documents a single press to mute or unmute during a call and a double press to end the call. A single press answers an incoming call on supported stem models. These are call-time actions, separate from the press-and-hold assignment used for listening modes or Siri.

Swap one press and two presses

  1. Connect the AirPods and open their settings page: tap the AirPods name in iPhone or iPad Settings, or select AirPods in Mac System Settings.
  2. Open Mute & Unmute or End Call. If neither appears in the main list, look under the call controls or Controls & Gestures.
  3. For the selected action, choose Press Once or Press Twice.
  4. Confirm the other action. Apple links the two assignments, so changing one updates the other rather than allowing both actions to use the same gesture.
  5. Place a test call and verify the gesture with the AirPods in your ears before relying on it in a meeting.

Menu wording and availability can vary by model and software. Apple’s call-control documentation is in Change settings for AirPods or AirPods Pro and its guide to making and answering calls.

Use Voice Isolation during a call

Voice Isolation is a separate microphone mode. It does not turn on Active Noise Cancellation for what you hear and does not alter the mute/end-call gesture.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Start or answer a call with supported AirPods connected.
  2. Open Control Center during the call.
  3. Choose FaceTime Controls.
  4. Select Voice Isolation.

Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 for this call-time feature. If FaceTime Controls or Voice Isolation is absent, check the AirPods generation and the app or call context.

  • Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
  • Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
  • Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
  • Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit

Mac

  1. Join or start the call.
  2. Open the call’s video or microphone menu.
  3. Choose Mic Mode, then Voice Isolation.

Voice Isolation changes microphone processing for the call. You still use the configured single-press or double-press action to mute, unmute, or end the call.

Choose and test the AirPods microphone

The connected AirPods page also includes microphone controls on models that support them. Open the AirPods settings and look for Microphone or Audio & Routing. Select the available microphone behavior, then make a short call recording or test call. If the microphone control is not shown, Apple may be handling microphone selection automatically for that model or software version.

Do not confuse microphone selection with Voice Isolation. The first determines how the AirPods microphone is routed; Voice Isolation is a call-time Mic Mode that reduces competing sound for supported models.

Fix missing options or gestures that do nothing

The AirPods name is not at the top of Settings

  • Put both earbuds on, or wake AirPods Max, and keep them near the device.
  • Confirm the output selector shows the AirPods rather than the device speaker or another accessory.
  • On Mac, select AirPods in System Settings instead of searching the general Bluetooth list for gesture controls.
  • If they connect but the page remains incomplete, close and reopen Settings after the connection is established.

Noise Cancellation is missing

  • Check the exact model name. Apple’s supported list includes AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
  • Look under Controls & Gestures for Press and Hold AirPods.
  • Use Control Center to see whether listening modes are available even when the press-and-hold assignment has been changed to Siri.
  • Remember that one-ear cancellation is limited to AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro.

The press-and-hold gesture launches the wrong feature

  • Return to Press and Hold AirPods and inspect both the left and right assignments.
  • Make sure the side is set to Listening Mode if you want Noise Cancellation or Transparency, or to Siri if you want the assistant.
  • If only one mode is available in the cycle, select two or three modes in the listening-mode picker.

Siri does not respond

  • Verify Siri is enabled on the device currently handling audio.
  • Use the phrase permitted by your model and region: try “Hey Siri” if “Siri” is not accepted.
  • Check that the press-and-hold side is assigned to Siri rather than Listening Mode.
  • For an older model, try its documented double-tap control instead of a stem press.

A call press ends the call when you meant to mute

  • Open the connected AirPods settings and inspect Mute & Unmute and End Call.
  • Set mute to the gesture you can reliably perform, then confirm that the linked end-call assignment changed as expected.
  • Test with a short call. A single press and a double press are easy to reverse accidentally when the assignment has been customized.

Voice Isolation is unavailable

  • Check that the AirPods are AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3.
  • Open the controls during the active call, not before connecting to the call.
  • On iPhone or iPad, use Control Center and FaceTime Controls; on Mac, use the call’s microphone or video menu and Mic Mode.

Keep the controls understandable when sharing devices

AirPods settings follow the connected-device and model context. A press-and-hold assignment made while using an iPhone may not be shown with the same grouping on a Mac, and a feature available on one AirPods generation may not appear after connecting a different pair. Before changing a control for a presentation or call, confirm the AirPods name and model displayed on that device.

A practical setup is to reserve press and hold for Listening Mode when you change environments often, use Siri for a side you can comfortably reach, and set the call gesture you can distinguish by touch. Keep Voice Isolation as an on-demand call setting rather than treating it as a permanent noise-control mode.
